Chapter 26: Reintroduction
"Breaking News! We have just received word that both the infamous Hero Killer: Stain alongside prominent vigilante Nozomu and his apprentice Minarai have been apprehended last night as part of what has come to be known as the Hosu Incident. Their capture was in part thanks to Endeavour, however his actions were subject to scrutiny when it was revealed via a security feed close to the scene that the number two hero nearly killed the trio in question. It has also come to light that Nozomu was in fact quirkless, although his true identity has yet to be seen. As always this is Veronica of Mustafau Prime, Signing off!"
The aforementioned revelations had spread like wildfire in the coming days, anywhere from message boards to newspapers had dedicated their time to discussing it. Above all, the topic of Nozomu's identity and his apparent quirklessnes was the focal point; each person having their own opinions on the controversial vigilante. For the majority of the quirkless population relegated to Mustafau district, he quickly became a symbol of hope for the community that winds of change were at long last flowing their way.
For more certain individuals, the vigilante signified a call to action, stoking the fires of rebellion. They were only embers, but embers nonetheless. You see, during Nozomu's tenure, he had garnered a wide variety of sympathisers: people who not only supported his actions but would stand with him when the time comes.
On the other hand, many of quirked society either flat out denied his notoriety or tried justifying a way in which he could indeed have a quirk, no matter how strenuous those efforts were. After all there was no way this vigilante could actually be quirkless, right?
Another day in the life of U.A high school. Both students and staff alike were simply going through the motions; lessons, lunch, lessons, home, sleep, rinse and repeat. The reports had not affected them in the slightest, or so it seemed. It was no secret that it had happened yet it was a taboo subject, dismissed to small-talk within friend groups.
Meanwhile, Class 1-A had heard rumours of two students being transferred into their class, so they were more than eager to get to school that day. An array of thoughts scattered across their minds, most of whom detailing their presumptions of just who these mysterious students were. The teachers had refused to divulge anything besides what they already knew. Speaking of teachers, their Homeroom teacher: Eraserhead has just made his entrance, silencing the class as he did so.
"As you are well aware, we will have two new students joining us from today," Eraserhead calmly spoke, gesturing to the door from which he entered. "I fully expect you to treat these two with the same respect as you do your other classmates, any less would be illogical. Come in!" he called, the students' eyes glancing towards the same door as the duo finally appeared.
"My name is Hitoshi Shinso. My quirk is Brainwashing. Yes, I know I won the Sports Festival. It is exactly how I got here in the first place. I'm not here to make friends so save it." Shinsou coldly remarked before mentioning for the second student to introduce himself. "Hello there!" he chuckled with a small wave. "Name's Izuku Midoriya, pleasure to meet 'ya! And don't worry about Hitoshi here, he's just as nice when you get to know 'em!" Midoriya casually quipped, gently nudging his friend in the side, earning a grumble in return.
Upon finishing, the two were directed to their respective seats by Aizawa who then declared that the next hour of homeroom would be a free period, sinking to the floor in his signature yellow sleeping bag.
'How convenient,' the duo noted.
Shinso found himself rapidly surrounded by a multitude of other students, sweat slithering down his forehead at the sudden attention. "Hey, what you did back there at the sports festival was super manly! I'm Kirishima by the way!" A redheaded kid half-yelled. "How did you learn all that anyway? It must have meant a hell of a lot of training!" Another student commented.
"You could say that again," Shinso mumbled.
"Someone must have taught you that stuff surely! Who was it?" Someone else questioned, causing Hitoshi to answer by offhandedly pointing to Midoriya, much to the others astonishment.
"Geez I guess that must mean he must have one really powerful quirk then, actually, what was it anyway? He didn't mention it earlier…" a yellow haired classmate pondered. "I'm sure he'll tell you soon enough," Shinso vaguely informed, only broadening their curiosity. The conversation shifted to more general discord, something that was a rarity for Hitoshi; rather, he was used to people outright refusing to utter a word around him in fear of his quirk possibly activating.
Concurrently, Midoriya was about to sit down however, he was interrupted by a ravenette. "Sorry for the intrusion, I just wished to check if there was anything of his left. We used to have another student where you sit now, and well… he was a pervert. Though I am surprised it took this long to be expelled with his tendencies" she stated, spraying the desk with yet another layer of disinfectant. "It's alright Yaoyorozu," he replied. "How did you-" "Know your name? You do realise your school is broadcast on live television right? It would be shocking if I didn't already know your names," he responded just as quickly.
"Midoriya-kun?" A voice called. He recognised that voice, he was sure of it. A faint nagging in his mind confirmed it. So why did that feeling stop short of the owner of it? "Yes-" he turned only to stop himself, locking eyes with the one in front of him. Uraraka. He hadn't seen her in a long time, not since their talk. "So…" she started, unable to find the right words to formulate any semblance to what would be considered a sentence. Likewise, Izuku was entirely speechless. The two remained awe-struck, instincts ditching speech to instead convey what needed to be said by actions alone. Each drew nearer to the other, small steps transforming into eager strides. Finally, they embraced, arms wrapped gently yet firmly around each other.
"I'm… sorry," Midoriya muttered once a few moments had passed. "Me too," Uraraka returned softly. There were no other words that could possibly equate, no other movements that could translate their raw emotions in this instance. No other expression can encapsulate all that had happened between the two. They owed it to each other. This was their apology.
Their encounter was again cut short by the familiar shriek of the bell, indicating that the next period of study was to begin. By unknown means, Aizawa had somehow managed to sneak out of the classroom in time for their next teacher, Ectoplasm, to start mathematics.
Normalcy had come back in full swing, and the two former vigilantes were more than happy for it.
The day passed relatively uneventfully from that point onward. Midoriya was glad that he had kept up with his education during his vigilante days because the last thing he wanted was to fall behind this early on. In retrospect, maybe he had studied a bit too much in his spare time as the subjects didn't pose much of a challenge when compared to how the other students in his class were handling it. That was, of course, aside from Shinso who Izuku had also trained to a similar level to his own when it comes to intellect.
Apparently, the class was supposed to have hero studies later on. Midoriya anticipated that this was likely going to double as a test for both Shinso and himself, seeing as not only was this their first day as part of the hero course but also that he had heard from his classmates that they had a similar experience on their first day all those months ago. One question still left him stumped: who was their teacher? All of the teachers at UA were known Pro-Heroes, so who is the one conducting the main subject that separated it from the other courses?
The newfound excitement reached a crescendo upon the penultimate ringing of the bell indicating the final lesson of the day. Silence occupied the room in the intermediate seconds until the classroom door slammed open like if it had been punched with the force of gods. The laughter that accompanied it pertained to its origin. That calming laugh. That reassuring smile. That overwhelming force. Only a fool would be unable to discern who it was. The man known as the 'Symbol of Peace', loved by most, hated by some.
All Might.
Izuku couldn't help but chuckle to himself in the sheer irony of the situation at play. The very man who had destroyed his dreams was standing in front of him. Whilst the class blindly cheered at his very presence, it was Izuku and Shinso (albeit to a lesser degree) that remained silent, simply choosing to glare at the number one hero.
He seemed to ignore this entirely, continuing with his small speech. All Might went on to explain that they were heading off to Field Gamma, signaling to the students to suit up into their hero costumes, with the clear exception of Shinso and Izuku who were each given the standard UA P.E. uniform to use.
Eventually, the class re-assembled once again at the designated site where All Might had been waiting for them. "For this time's basic hero training, We'll have some fun with a rescue training race!" All Might stated "You'll break up into four 5-person groups and go through the training one group at a time. It's a race to see who will rescue me first! Of course, you'll have to keep damage to buildings to a minimum." He concluded, pointing toward Bakugou who scoffed at the insinuation.
The first group was announced to be made up of Midoriya, Shinso, Iida, Sero and Ashido. The first two shared a knowing glance at one another
'This is going to be entertaining,' the duo synchronously thought unbeknownst to each other. Hastily, the quintet rushed eagerly to their positions, performing brief stretches in an attempt to prepare their body for what was probably to be an intense match.
"Three! Two! One!" All Might yelled. The students shifted their balance marginally.
"Go!" He shouted, muffled slightly by the overwhelming blare of a fog horn. With great urgency they all set off, leaping from pipe to pipe in the vast cityscape. However, it just as quickly became apparent who was going to inevitably win the race. The other three were indeed capable, but their movements were completely outclassed by that of the former vigilantes. There was a certain elegance about them, each meticulous step appeared akin to a choreographed routine not dissimilar from dancers. They twisted and turned as they spun through the various obstacles, not slowing even once. Shinso's actions were already expected; they had seen him enough at the sports festival to know he was capable of such skill. What surprised them was in fact the actions of Midoriya. It was obvious now that he had been the one to teach the former. His every motion showcased him to be further refined, if that was possible.
It didn't take long for them to arrive at the finish line, Izuku achieving a significant first place followed shortly by Hitoshi in second. It then took another three full minutes for the others to make it themselves. That included the likes of Iida, who managed to slip up at a few points resulting in his severe delay. It was noted that if he had done it perfectly, he may have reached the end in conjunction with the prior two.
"What the heck is this guy's quirk?! He's insane at this!" Kaminari exclaimed, stunned. The response? Well, that only served to shock his classmates further.
"Who's to say I have a quirk?"
