Five

It was 6:32, and Phil still hadn't called him. It had only been four hours and five minutes ( he had counted), but Dan was still anxious, picking up his phone every three minutes to make sure he hadn't missed anything.

Dammit, Dan, calm down, he thought. He's probably still asleep. Or maybe he's decided I'm too weird for him. No, he would have told me that. You never know though...

Dan's mind races with different scenarios, each one worse than the last. He was going fucking crazy, and he had no reason to.

He paced the flat over and over, running his hands through his hair and thinking. He threw himself onto the couch, staring at the ceiling. Picked up his phone, checked it, threw it down beside him. This was not healthy...

The next three hours were no different. Dan's phone still had no notifications, and he was still freaking about that. Why wouldn't Phil just call him? Or text at least.

Dan decided that the best thing to do was distract himself. So he grabbed his laptop and logged onto Tumblr. Phil said he followed Dan, right? So maybe he would stalk his dash just a little...

Phil's dash wasn't boring, but it wasn't the most interesting either. Dan scrolled through all his pictures, reblogs and whatnot. It was a very good distraction, and after that, Dan decided to just go through Tumblr in general. After what seemed like only minutes, Dan saw that it was one am.

He sighed heavily. It was obvious that Phil wasn't going to try and contact him anytime soon. Probably never. So much for having at least one friend.

Screw it, Dan thought as he went for the phone. Once it was in his hand,  the phone started ringing. And it was Phil.

Well,  I don't want to seem thirsty or something,  so I'm just going to wait.

The phone rang once.  Don't touch it.

  Rang twice. Wait...

On the third ring, he quickly accepted the call. "Hello?" he said, excited and out of breath.

"Hey there." Phil said, sounding kind of sleepy. Dan smiled at that thought. "Sorry I didn't call you earlier, " Phil continued. "I was kinda busy with family and stuff."

"Don't worry about it. I wasn't too worried about it." That was a complete lie, but Phil didn't have to know that.

"Good; I wouldn't want you to be too worried for my sake. What have you been up to?"

Dan had been doing nothing all day except pace his flat and worry about when Phil was going to call him. "Oh, nothing. It's been a lazy day."

Phil chuckled on the other side of the line.  "Sounds extremely exciting."

"Yeah... hey, so I was wondering, maybe later on you and I could meet up at the coffee shop? It's just, I prefer talking to people in person. I don't know, you don't have to... " But Dan wanted him to. Please say yes.

There was a moment of silence, and Dan mentally punched himself. He didn't want Phil to think he was weird.

"Sorry, I got a bit distracted." Dan prepared for rejection. "Um, I was actually just about to head over there myself. You can join me if you want, I could use the company."

Dan smiled and danced around the living room. Then he calmed down and told Phil he'd see him later, hanging up the phone.

As soon as he knew Phil couldn't hear him anymore, Dan flew gracefully around the flat, laughing and dancing. At least Phil didn't hate him. And he was going to see him. Soon.

                   ***********

By two thirty am, Dan had showered, gotten dressed, flat ironed his hair and was walking out the door to the coffee shop. He was trying to calm down cause he didn't want Phil to notice how excited he was.

What the literal hell was wrong with him? He had never been anything like this before meeting Phil. He wasn't the emotionally attached kind if person. He'd hadn't even had a crush since the sixth grade. This boy was seriously messing with his head. But maybe that wasn't so bad. Dan could use a little help in the social department. Phil might be the perfect person to cure his anti socialness.

Dan arrived at the coffee place about ten minutes later, and eagerly pushed the door open, waking into the warm air that smelled of coffee and cake. He looked around, but didn't see Phil anywhere, so he just went to sit in the back.

His leg jumped nervously and his fingers drummed on the table restlessly. After about five minutes of waiting, Dan saw Phil walking past the window, and he smiled widely.

As Phil entered the shop, Dan pretended to be busy on his phone, so that he didn't seem like he was desperately waiting for him. He put it back in his pocket when Phil sat down. "Hey." he said casually, smiling.

Phil smiled back and replied, "Hi. I really am sorry I didn't call earlier, hope I didn't leave you waiting."

Dan playfully shoved him, and when he did, some weird feeling shot up his arm, making his stomach turn. He hid any tell tale sign of it though, concentrated on Phil's lips, which were moving. He was talking.

"Dan? You in there, mate?"  Phil waved his hand in front if Dan's face to get his attention. Dan shipments his head to clear the strange feeling, and smiled at Phil.

"Yeah, sorry. Lost in my head."

"You were like that yesterday too. Lost in your head. Your eyes were all glazed and you didn't pay attention to anything around you."

Except you, Dan thought. He was way too excited that Phil had noticed this about him. Most people just didn't loom at him or made fun of him about it. Phil was different. So different. "It happens sometimes. I'm just pretty used to being on my own and not paying attention to anyone else. Just... shake me or something when it happens."

"Used to being on your own? What's that mean?" Phil questioned. Usually Dan wouldn't want to share this kinda thing with anyone. But Phil looked like he really wanted to know, and he couldn't deny that pretty face.

He sighed and started talking. Told Phil everything, about the bullying, the insomnia, even the dislike of the dark. He expected Phil to laugh at this part, but he just listened carefully, which Dan really appreciated. He left out the part about being bisexual. They weren't that good of friends. It took all of twenty minutes, recounting his past and all the things wrong with it.

When finished, Phil smiled at him sympathetically, which was really adorable and made Dan smile back.

It actually felt awesome to tell someone the whole truth without any judgement.

"Hey, don't feel bad about it or anything." Phil said, placing his hands on Dan's arms which made Dan's hair stand on end. "I think you're much more interesting with all your baggage. We'd probably have never met if you weren't so weird." he chuckled as Dan shoved him again.

The rest of the night was spent in playful teasing and more talk about their pasts. Dan found out that Phil hadn't been the most popular in school either, but he was never bullied for it. He had only two other friends, Chris and PJ, who he'd known since seventh grade. His mum was a nurse and his dad was currently unemployed. He lived on his own, but his friends almost always stayed over, so it didn't seem like it.

"Your past is loads better than mine." Dan complained sarcastically. Chris and PJ seems really cool; maybe he'd get to meet them someday.

At five-twenty am, Dan started yawning. Why did the night always go so fast?

Phil laughed. "You should go get some sleep, Dan. This staying-up-all-night thing can't be too good on your health."

Dan nodded sleepily. "Hey, you've been doing it too. Don't judge me." he replied accusingly. Phil nodded.

"But only for the last two days. You've been doing it for seven  years"

  He had a point.

" I'll see you later Dan." he said, then got up and left. Dan watched him pass by the window, waving at him just before he passed out of sight. He was too adorable for his own good.

Back at home, Dan climbed into bed and went to sleep. Usually, he didn't have any clear dreams. Just vague memories in the... afternoon. But this time, as the sun was rising slowly in the east, he dreamt of inky, black hair and bright blue eyes.
