Pretty as a Rose

"Jessica, I am so sorry. We didn't know what your foster parents did. We just wanted our baby." Jennifer said in tears. "We love Margo.. I'm sorry. Isla. We love her so much.. but we know now she's not ours. She's yours and we wish you both the best."

"Thank you so much. I really appreciate that. I'm sorry this all happened. I'm sorry I changed my mind."

"No, no don't apologize.  I apologize for the way I acted. I was just so happy.."

"You'll be happy again.  It'll happen for you guys.. you two are great, that's why I chose you."

"Thank you for choosing us. Those five days with Isla were incredible.  But it's time for her to be with her mother.  She's so happy with you already.  You're gonna be so great, Jessica.  Good luck." Jennifer hugged Jessica.

Jessica smiles. "Thank you so much."

Jennifer then smiles and whispers in Jessica's ear. "This boy really likes you, I can tell."

Jessica giggles and blushes. "Maybe."

Gary and Jennifer say their goodbyes and leave.

"Wow." Jessica takes a deep breath. "Well that's that.  Let's go home, Isla bug."

"I call middle seat with Jess and the baby!" Danny says.

"No fair!  Danny, you suck!" Sarah says.

**

On the drive home Isla just kept staring at her mother.  Jessica of course couldn't take her eyes off of her either.

"She is just mesmerized.  She loves you so much, Jess."

"She looks like she does, doesn't she?" Jessica chuckles. "I love you too Isla.. Isla.. I need a middle name for her." She looks up to Danny.

"Do you have any you like?"

"No, I don't have any at all."

Danny looks down and softly caresses the baby's arm.  Isla coos up to him and Danny smiles.

"How about Rose?"

Jessica smiles. "Rose is a beautiful name, Danny."

"Isla Rose Lange." Danny smiles.

"That's her name.  You named her!"

"We both did."

"Yeah.. Isla, Danny picked the perfect middle name for you, didn't he?"

"She's as pretty as a rose so it was easy."

Jessica smiles to Danny.  Sarah turned to the back and saw the two smiling and staring into each other's eyes.

Sarah turns back and scoffs.

"What's wrong?" Catherine asks.

"They're back there staring at each other like idiots."

"Sarah!"

**

"Here we are, Isla.. this is our home for now.  Don't worry, it's new for me too."

Catherine smiles and looks to her husband who was walking down the stairs.

"There she is!  Wow, let me see this girl.. Well hello beautiful.  Jessica, she's precious."

"Thank you, Mr. Paulson."

Just then Isla began to squirm and fuss a little.

"I'm sorry, I think she's hungry.  I'm gonna go upstairs to feed her."

"Well maybe now is a good time to show you what we've done." Douglas says.

"What?"

"Go up and open the first door on the right."

Jessica smiles and walks upstairs, Danny and Sarah following behind.

Danny opens the door for them and Jessica's jaw drops.

"Oh my gosh!  When did they do this?"

Douglas and Catherine catch up. "I started working on it last night, and I had some help while y'all were gone.  Thank God for the speedy delivery service too!" He chuckles.

"Our own room?"

"Yes, for now!  The baby will need you close, but once she's older we can turn the office into a nursery." Catherine says.

"No, this is perfect!  Thank you both so so much!" Jessica hugs Sarah's parents. "I've never.. I just can't believe this." She cries.

"Welcome home, Jessica." Catherine smiles.

"Thank you.  Wow.. Isla, all of this is for us!  Look, you have clothes and toys.  You have a crib, the bassinet Danny bought you."

"I bought her this giraffe!" Sarah says.

"And they giraffe from aunt Sarah!  You guys, this is crazy!"

Isla then lets out a cry.

"We better leave them alone and let Isla eat in peace." Catherine says.

"Alright.  We'll be back once you're finished, Jess." Sarah says.

"Okay." She smiles and sits down on her rocking chair to nurse the baby.

Jessica takes a painful sigh as she sits, but then relaxes.

"Isla, look at all of our new stuff!  This is our room, Princess!  How lucky are we?  I'm so happy you're going to be in a home like this.  I'm so happy I'm finally in a home like this." Jessica smiles through her tears as the baby eats.

"I've always dreamed of this, Isla.  I always wanted a home, and now I think I finally have one.  It's been so long, baby girl.  I have lived through so much pain.. but here we are.  I've never been happier."

Jessica kisses her baby's forehead and softly rocks her.

Later that evening.

"Hello Zoe?" Catherine answers her phone.

"Is my son ever coming back home?"

Catherine laughs. "I don't think so.  He and Sarah have been upstairs with Jessica and the baby all evening.

"Is Danny being respectful?"

"He always is, Zoe!"

"Good.  Well, if it's okay with you he can sleep over, but he has to be back tomorrow."

"Alright, I'll let him know, sis."

"Thank you."

**

"Knock knock.  Daniel, your mother-" Catherine stops when she sees the three in bed sound asleep.

Catherine laughs and looks in the bassinet.  There Isla laid wide awake.

"Did you wear them out, love?  Can I finally get some cuddles in?" She lifts her up.

"Look at them.  You've been working all of them, haven't you?"

Isla looks around and coos.

"Sweet baby!" She giggles and cuddles her close.

Wednesday February 10th.

Since Jessica is not with her foster parents anymore, that means she isn't forced to attend school.  Jessica loved spending her day with Isla, and she was already dreading the day she would have to leave her to go back.

Danny has been coming over everyday after school.  Today Sarah had some exciting news to share with her best friend.

"We're home!" Sarah says.

"Hi guys!  She just woke up from her nap." Jessica smiles as Danny takes the baby.

"Let's give mommy's arms a break and come with your favorite uncle in the world."

Jessica giggles.

"You guys, someone is ten days old today!  We're double digits!"

"Yay Isla bug!" Sarah cheers.

"She's such a big girl already!" Danny says.

"I know." Jessica pouts and turns to Sarah. "What's up, smiley?" She asks.

Sarah giggles and covers her face.

"What's with you?"

"Well I might have been asked out on my first date."

"Your first date?  Ooh Sarah!"

"The guy must be blind." Danny says.

"Shut up!  If you weren't holding the baby, I'd throw this pillow at you."

Danny rolls his eyes.

"Who is it, Sarah?  Will your parents let you go?"

"Well I am thirteen now.  I am a woman."

"Okay!" Jessica laughs and makes a face.

"I haven't asked if they'd let me go, but the rule was no dating until thirteen."

"Well that's fun!" Jessica smiles. "Danny, do you have a valentine yet?" She asks.

"Hey we're talking about me!"

"And I asked Danny!" Jessica makes a cute grumpy face at Sarah.

"Nah.. Will you be my Valentine, Isla?"

Jessica chuckles and relaxes back on the chair. "She's been a fussy pants today."

"Not my Isla girl!" Danny says.

"Yes your Isla girl!  I showered and left her with Sarah's mom.  She said she cried the entire time.  I go to pee, she cries.  I sit her down to breathe and relax my arms, and she cries."

"She just loves her mommy." Sarah says.

"Yeah, and Danny too apparently since she isn't fussing with him!" Jessica laughs.

Sarah smiles. "I'm gonna go talk to my parents.  If they say yes we have to figure out what I'm gonna wear!"

"Yes, it's gonna be so much fun!"

Sarah leaves the room and Jessica looks to Danny. "You got her?  I wanna take a nap."

"You rest, rest, rest, I've got her."

"Thank you so much, Danny."

"Don't mention it." He says taking in every detail of the baby.

Jessica watched him for a moment longer before smiling softly and shutting her eyes.
