Another Puppy

"Gaga's having a baby!  Gaga's having a baby!" Isla cheers and kicks her legs with excitement.

Jessica laughs and hands her to Catherine.

"I'm not pregnant, Isla."

"Gaga you can get a baby!  You don't got growing like mommy!"

"Yeah Gaga!" Jessica smiles.

Catherine gives her a look, and Jessica gives her one back.

"Why are you mad at me?" Catherine asks in a sad voice.

"I'm not mad, mom.  But if I had sex, don't you think I'd tell you?"

"Well that's what I thought!  That's why my feelings were hurt.."

"Aww.. Momma, I promise you that I will tell you if that day ever comes."

"IF?" Danny shouts with wide eyes.

Everyone turns to him and Jessica makes a face.

"I mean.. Yes.."

Jessica rolls her eyes and turns to her mother.

"It's okay.  You're such a good girl and I should have known, Jessie.  I'm so sorry."

"Don't apologize, Momma." Jessica hugs Catherine.

"So sex?" Isla says. "That's how babies get in your tummy?"

Sarah starts cracking up.  She then sits on the couch and puts her feet on the coffee table. "Go ahead and explain this.  I want to watch."

April.

"Mom, I really need to get a job.  I know you and dad said I don't need one, but I feel bad.  I should get a job and start saving for mine and Isla's future."

"When do you have time to work, honey?"

"Well.. What if I get a job at a daycare?  I can work after school, and Isla can be sent there so she's still with me."

"I don't know.  There are so many germs at a daycare."

"Mom please.  I'm doing the best I can.  I can't work in retail, I refuse.  And this way I still get to be around Isla.  Plus I know how to take care of a child.  This is perfect for me!"

"Okay.  If this is what you really want, then go ahead."

"Oh thank you!  I applied yesterday and I start tomorrow!  I love you, Mom!" Jessica kisses her cheek.

"What?  You already got the job?"

"Yeah sorry.. I had Danny take me yesterday.  Are you mad?"

"I'm not mad.  I'm proud of you, but next time discuss it with me and dad first."

"Yes ma'am." Jessica smiles.

"So do I pick Isla up and drop her off with you?"

"No, you'll only have to pick her up on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  I work on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, so the daycare will pick her up and bring her."

"A stranger will be driving my grand baby?"

"It's literally five minutes away, mom."

"Alright.. Well if this is what you want.  But remember you can quit at any time!"

Jessica chuckles. "Thanks mom."

Catherine smiles and hugs her daughter.

Jessica prepared Isla for the day, and though Isla was a little nervous, she was thrilled about getting to go to work with mommy.

After school Jessica changed and Danny dropped her off at work.

"You look so cute in your uniform, babe."

"Thanks." Jessica smiles.

"How do you feel?"

"Like I'm gonna throw up."

"Don't be nervous, Jess."

"Don't tell me not to be nervous, Daniel.  That's like me telling you not to be a straight white man."

"Sorry."

Jessica sighs. "I'm sorry.  I know you didn't mean anything by it.  I love you.  Thank you for the ride, and I'll call you when we get home."

"Alright.  I love you." Danny leans over and kisses her lips. "Have a good first day."

Jessica smiled softly. "Thank you."

Jessica was assigned to the baby room, and she was loving it.

"Oh mister James, do you have a stinky diaper?" Jessica baby talked.

"I have a stinky diaper too." A coworker says holding a baby girl.

"Well stand in line and I can change them both."

"Really?"

"Yeah why not?"

"Usually we fight about who has to change them."

Jessica laughs. "It's not so bad now.  Once they start eating solids, that's when things get rough."

"You must have lots of younger siblings, Jess."

Jessica pauses for a moment and smiles very softly. "No.. actually I um.. I have a daughter, so I've been through all of this."

Jessica will be 17 in a week but still looks even younger than that.  Her coworker was shocked to hear she was a mother.

"Oh wow, really?  That's awesome!"

"Yeah.. She's actually going to be here soon."

"Will she be in this room?"

"No.. umm.. She's four."

The girls' eyes went wide. "Oh cool!  That's great!  So you're a pro at this."

Jessica laughs. "Well I wouldn't say that, but I have experience."

Jessica then finishes up their diapers and washes her hands.  That's when she heard a knock on the glass door.

The director stood at the door holding Isla's hand.  Isla knocked on the window and smiled when she saw her mother.

"My baby!" Jessica opens the door and gets down on her knees.

"MOMMY!"

"Hi Princess!  How was school?"

"Good!  They say I can come see you before going to meet my new friends."

"That's very sweet of them, isn't it?"

"Yup!  Heyyyy!  You get to work with the babies?"

"I do." Jessica smiles.

"So cool!  Can you take one home?"

"No." Jessica laughs.

"Just put it in your packpack."

"I will not be putting any babies in my backpack, Isla."

"Okay.  Well I'm gonna go see my room.  You have fun with the babies!"

Jessica smiles and kisses her cheek. "Thank you, baby girl.  I love you."

"Love you too, Mommy!"

"She is so cute!" Her coworker Allison says.

"Thank you." Jessica smiles.

**

Jessica walked into Isla's room and found her playing with her new friends.  A couple were actually in her class at school.

It made Jessica feel so happy when she saw how happy her daughter was.

"Isla bug.  Honey, it's time to go home."

"Awww Nooo!  Please let me stay!"

"Gaga's here for us, we need to get home."

"But I love this place!"

"You'll be back soon."

"Tomorrow?"

"No, not tomorrow, but the day after that."

"Awe man!  Bye guys.."

Jessica chuckles as Isla grabs her backpack and takes her mother's hand. "Let's go, Mommy."

Later that evening Danny was over.  Jessica, Danny, and Sarah were all upstairs after dinner talking and watching tv.

"Honey, I'm happy you had a good first day."

Jessica smiles. "Me too.  Oh gosh you guys, these babies were so cute!  Not as cute as Isla, but still really really cute!  It just makes me miss Isla being that little."

"Aw." Sarah pouts.

"Those days were so hard, but gosh they were great!"

"They were fun.  She was so freaking tiny!  She'd just lay on my chest." Danny says as he thinks back with a smile on his face. "She would wrap her tiny hand around my finger.. then she'd poop all over the place."

Jessica laughs and wipes her eyes.

"Aw Jess, why are you crying?" Sarah asks.

"Time just goes too fast.  She's a big girl now.. we don't have any babies!" She says as she watches Isla playing with her dollhouse.

"I miss that stage so so much.  But I do love this part of life as well because now she's growing into her own little person. . . I just can't help but miss the baby cries and teeny tiny toesies." Her voice goes high.

Danny smiles and wraps his arm around her.

Suddenly their moment is interrupted by loud shouting. "NO!  SHUT UP, THAT'S NOT IT!"

"Will you calm down?"

"What the hell is going on out there?" Danny asks.

"Mom?  Dad?" Sarah says.

"Everything is fine!" Doug shouts.

"No!" Catherine takes off and joins the kids.

"Mom, why are you yelling?" Jessica asks.

"THIS!" Catherine holds a pregnancy test in their faces.

"Ew I don't want that in my face, aunt Cathy."

"Is this a joke?" Sarah asks.

Jessica smiles and laughs a little. "What's happening?"

"You cursed me!"

"What?"

"You cursed me!" She says even louder.

"Is this a prank?"

"I wish it were!  I'm pregnant!"

Doug walks in and sighs.

"Oh and there he is." Danny says giving his uncle a disapproving nod. "You should be ashamed of yourself, sir.  Doing this at your age."

Jessica elbows Danny in his side.

"Y'all are telling the truth?" She asks.

"Yes!"

"Kids listen, your mother is just more than likely going through the change.  We don't know for sure if she's pregnant yet."

"I'm not that old, you jerk!"

"What's wrong?" Isla asks with a sad look in her eyes. "Why everybody yelling?"

"Come here, sweet girl." Jessica calls her.  Isla walks over and she sits her on her lap. "Everything is fine, okay?  They're just.. excited."

"About what?"

"About.. the fact that we may be getting another puppy!" Catherine says.

"Oh no!  You is not getting a new puppy!  Me no even like Bear!"

Sarah laughs. "Poor bear."

"We'll make an appointment to see if we are for sure getting a new puppy, or if your grandmother is just getting old." Doug says.

Isla looks to her grandmother and laughs.  She then points and shouts, "OLD!"

Jessica quickly puts her hand over her mouth to shut her up.

Are things about to get even crazier in the Paulson/Lange house?
