Chapter Two
THE CHILLY EMBRACE of the winter breeze washed across the timid landscape, for the hides of both animal and bird had laid thickened with the approaching snow. The landscape held a dead beauty, for the temperature of the mountains have dropped throughout the lonesome night, creating a world of dull radiance.
The distant sound of laughter sounded through the air, collected by the ears of the nearby wildlife. The laughter rolled alluringly from the lips of its owner, for the sound was never once mistaken in the attention of the ancient forest. It was the laughter of genuine joviality, the sound alone carried with the weight of a dozen angels.
Basked in the sun's jealous rays of faded warmth, two girls of different ages occupied the rocky creek of the forest. Their movements filled with finesse as they jumped from rock to rock, the appealing calculation of their feet mesmerizing in the eyes of the animalistic onlookers.
Dakota didn't jump from rock to rock, her mind far too troubled to reduce to the thoughts of her latest dream. With a steadied gaze, she watched as her younger sister frolicked amongst the creek. The girl's brown curls bouncing along her shoulders with each effortless step, her pale skin pink with a childish youth.
Dakota herself was filled with an ample grace, her muscles strengthened with the shift, her bones laying sturdy beneath her far skin. She was a woman of simple attraction, for the radiance of her appearance didn't ravel upon her features, but the scent of intoxicating desire that leaked from her pores.
"You were mumbling again in your sleep," The girl began as her laughter eased, her small body tilting slightly as a rock shifted beneath her feet. "I couldn't figure out what you were saying, it was all muffled." The girl added, her emerald hued eyes raising to focus on the woman who lingered on the bank of the chilly water stream.
Dakota's attention snapped toward the face of her beloved sister, watching with shaken curiosity as she began to speak. "I'm sorry for keeping you up, I don't mumble on purpose." She whispered, her voice sounding far less authoritative than in her dream, though the silvery touch of her voice remained.
Rosemary rolled her shoulders in a gentle shrug, her body moving once more from rock to rock with a careless adjustment. "It doesn't matter, I can never sleep anyway. What is it you dream of?" The young girl asked with a voice of strangling curiosity, her eyes faltering back toward the brunette that pressed herself toward the girl.
"Nothing I can remember," Dakota lied through her teeth, her tongue moving at an unalarmed gate. "So it must've been nothing important." She pointed out with a tilt of her head, a few strands of brown pushing past her back to collect along her shoulders.
Rosemary seemed understandable, her small head simply nodding to the words that surfaced from her sister's tongue. "Do you think I will change? Be like you?" Rosemary asked, her gaze drifting from Dakota to examine the cold creek below.
The thought of the young girl taking on the transformation from beast to human made Dakota's, stomach curl. How many times had the girl pondered over such a horrid affair? The question lingered in the back of her mind as she searched for something to say, her focus following the girl's to the creek below. "No, I pray you won't. You shouldn't have to worry about the shift either way, you're far to young to worry about such thoughts."
Dakota was inwardly cringing, her whole world of solitude made up of the shift she went through. The whole purpose for her caged lifestyle, built on the foundation of her beastly transition. Unlike the rest of the female werewolves of the world, Dakota could morph into the beast folklore. She was a prized position hidden away, and locked beneath a key of enchantment.
"You are kinda like a Princess," The girl mused, leaping from the creek bed to stumble onto dry land. "Every Alpha, and man in the wolf world wants you. You are like Rapunzel, but the off brand version." The girl exclaimed, her tiny figure soon bounding around Dakota in a lightened skip.
Dakota couldn't resist the scowl that devoured her features, her small nose wrinkling in given distaste. She could personally careless about the attention of men, or even Alpha's at that. None of them wanted her for her personality, only the power that came with breeding her. It was utterly disgusting, the single thought of laying with a beast making her skin crawl.
The thought of the golden-eyed wolf crept into her mind, his words carried with the weight of the unknown. It was only a dream, his words of possession made up of her exhausted thoughts. "Thanks, I have always wanted to be an off-brand blonde." Dakota murmured under her breath, her hand reaching outward to lightly flick the moving girl in the cheek.
Rosemary swore beneath the lightened contact, her head snapping toward Dakota with a look of displeasure. "At least you don't have to worry about finding someone who will care for you, Kota. I heard he is rather nice, to the eyes of course." Rosemary taunted, her tongue snaking from her mouth to run across her lips.
Dakota stiffened with the words that leaked from her sister's lips, her frosted eyes constricting in a look of shattering curiosity. "Who is rather nice to look at?" Dakota quizzed, her arms crossing before her chest in an act to appear brazen before the younger girl.
"Dad told me not to tell," Rosemary murmured, her gaze drifting toward the forest around them rather than the brunette that beckoned for answers. "I have always wanted to paint, I just don't have any of the supplies." The young girl whispered knowing Dakota, would pick up the lightened words.
With a ticking jaw, the woman of beastly inhabitants shifted along the forest floor, her arms dropping from her chest in an expression of given loathe. "I will give you may art set and a couple brushes. Now, tell me." Dakota grumbled, her jaw relaxing a bit as the girl nodded in satisfaction.
"The Alpha of Norma Mountain."
