WARNING: NOT for the faint of heart. I advise you to leave now.
MC hesitantly went over to Sayori's house. He couldn't help but get a sinking feeling in his stomach that something wasn't right...while Sayori, in the meantime, was stuck in a coughing fit...the worst one so far. She froze when she heard MC's footsteps and forced herself to stop, panting to catch her breath. She tensed when she heard a knock on the door followed by MC's voice.
"Sayori?"
She cleared her throat before turning towards the door with a small smile. "C-come in!" She couldn't stop herself from stuttering.
MC hesitantly pushed open the door. Sayori immediately perked up when she saw him. She temporarily felt her weakness melt away as she got up and hugged him. "Ohayou!~" she greeted, before remembering and pulling away, not wanting him to get sick too.
"Ohayou." MC muttered. "...are you feeling okay? You're a little pale."
"Er...what are you talking about?" Sayori said nervously. "Everything's fine!"
"Sayori, don't lie to me. I know you better than that."
She paused for a moment. She considered saying something, but she quickly pushed the idea away. *That'll be too suspicious.* she thought before shaking her head. "Like I said, everything's fine, silly! But why are you here, anyways? Isn't :insert: coming over?"
MC hesitated. "How did you know about that...?"
"Monika told me." Sayori said with a shrug. "I'm proud of you, MC! It means you're trying your hardest to make new friends...it's...something useful to have." She glanced away slightly. She knew she'd most likely inevitably die if she kept getting worse...
"Er..." MC hesitated. "...I...I AM trying, Sayori, but...I can't help but worry about you."
Sayori hesitated, feeling another coughing fit coming on, but she cleared her throat again to push it away. "...what...what do you mean?"
"I mean...you've been acting differently. Are you sure you're feeling okay? Do I need to get you something?" MC said, gently raising his hand to feel Sayori's forehead, but she pushed it away.
"I'm fine, MC!" She said cheerfully, but the coughing fit finally hit her.
MC flinched away from surprised and pressed his hand against her forehead while she was coughing, only to quickly pull it away.
"Sayori, you're burning up!!" He said, alarmed.
Sayori forced herself to stop coughing again before sighing. "Well...no point hiding it now." She muttered.
"...hiding what?" MC said, his concern growing.
Sayori sighed again. "I...I've been sick my whole life, MC. No one knows why...and...no one can find a cure." She said quietly. "That's why I've been trying to push you outside your limits. That's why I need you to make friends. Just...just in case...I..." She sways dizzily, putting her hand against her head. MC quickly pulled her into a second hug.
"Why didn't you tell me before?"
Sayori paused for a moment before hugging back. "I...didn't want to worry you."
MC just hesitated. "If you told me, I could've tried to help..."
Sayori shook her head with a sad smile. "I'm sorry, MC, but there's nothing you can do. Just...just go back home...I'm sure :insert:'s already waiting for you."
MC hesitated again before sighing. "...I'll be back later, okay?.." he said quietly.
Sayori just nodded. "Don't worry about me! I'll be okay. Just...have fun." She said weakly. MC just looked away before slowly leaving.
...
Finally, the day of the festival arrived.
MC gathered everything before starting to head to school. He paused for a minute as he passed Sayori's house. He felt like he was forgetting something, but he shrugged it off and continued on anyway, not realizing his mistake.
He was greeted by Monika as he walked into the classroom.
"Ohayou, MC! Where's Sayori?" She asked.
MC hesitated. "...pretty sure she's sleeping in again. I didn't want to disturb her, so..."
Monika giggled. "That does seem considerate of you, MC! But aren't you forgetting about something?"
The atmosphere got heavy for a moment.
"I...don't...think so?..."
"Hmm...well, you may want to think again. It's wrong to leave your best friend hanging, you know?"
It felt like time stopped as MC finally realized. He dropped what he was holding.
"... a-actually, I...I-I'm gonna go get Sayori!" He said quickly, racing out of the room.
"Don't strain yourself!~" Monika called after him, but looked away with a small sigh after he left.
MC ran as fast as he could towards Sayori's house and knocked on the door.
Nothing.
He went inside.
Nothing.
He slowly walked up the stairs to her bedroom.
He could hear the sound of coughing from inside. It sounded horrible.
"Sayori...?" He said quietly, gently opening the door.
Sayori was still in bed, just as he assumed, in the middle of a coughing fit. Blood was trickling from her mouth.
MC froze and ran over to her side. "SAYORI!"
Sayori stopped and panted before weakly looking at him. "M...MC?..." she whispered between breaths. Her throat burned. Her vision was blurry. "MC...I...I'm scared...I don't want to...I don't want to die..."
MC hugged her close to him. She was too weak to hug back. She snuggled into his chest instead. Tears streamed down her face.
"Sayori...I'm sorry...I'm so sorry..." MC whispered.
Sayori gave a weak smile and forced herself to shakily wrap her arms around him. "There's...nothing to be sorry about, MC." She said quietly.
MC slowly let his grip loosen to allow Sayori to lay back down in bed, but still gripped her hand tightly in his.
"Don't go, Sayori..." he whispered.
Sayori just kept up her weak, but somehow still cheerful smile. "I'm...glad you came back for me...because...I wanted to tell you...one more thing."
She used her last ounce of strength to sit up and gently pull MC down so she could whisper in his ear.
"Thank you for making this last week the best one yet. You're the best boyfriend I could ask for, MC."
Tears streamed down both of their faces now, making faint pitter-patter noises as they hit the bedsheets.
Sayori took a deep, shaky breath.
"...sayo...nara."
She slowly slid back down before going limp.
She stopped breathing.
MC's heart skipped a beat. "...Sayori?...Sayori, answer me! Say something!" He said desperately, shaking her. "Say something! Please! I'm begging you!"
He didn't get a response.
He hugged her body close to him and gently rocked her back and forth as he continued to cry.
