Chapter 7: Apologies
Days after the incident with Henry, Hanji just ignored me. When I came to talk to her, she silently nods and shakes her head, never directly listening to me. I apologized so many times, but she never takes it in. I tried to buy her flowers but she places them into a vase and putting them onto the side, never smelling them. What have I done?
I decided to call Erwin for my troubles and the only one who I can fully trust. "Erwin?" I say as I hear the phone pick up.
"Levi? Why are you calling at the moment? I'm surprised."
"I... have a problem."
"What kind of problem? Should be done in a couple done minutes, right?" He gives a short laugh.
"Not that kind. Hanji."
Erwin was silent. "What about her?"
"I may have upset-ed her."
"How? She's crazy about you, how did you upset her?"
"Some guy who flirted with her and she let that jerk push her around. I-I... I let my anger get the best of me."
Erwin sighs, "You got to handle that."
"I did, just seeing him push Hanji around like she's nothing, and telling her how she needed to be with him. I had to do something, but I let my anger go. She looked at me like she made a mistake. I wish I could regret it, to make it different."
"You remember what I said?"
"Yeah, taking it in. Now, she's not even listening to me. Think she wants to break up?"
"Probably, but can I come over? I'll bring Moblit."
"Moblit? Who's he again?"
"That assistant of Hanji. He was one of the people who helped with the experiment that you were a part of."
"Why him?"
"Because when Hanji usually feels down, he's the one that confronts her."
"Okay then. Should I tell her?"
"No, don't. But try and get enough food for 4 people without Hanji noticing. We'll try and get a ride tonight. Promise."
"Alright then, see you tonight?"
"Yeah, tonight."
"Bye." I hung up, sighing. I'll do anything to make up for my mistakes, but I'm not gonna lose Hanji to some guy.
I asked Hanji to get some ice-cream from the store, trying to buy some time for Erwin. She agreed while I was making calls for a pizza place. Said she'll take about an hour because she needed to get gas and some other groceries. Erwin said he'll take a few minutes and he'll be here.
Knocking from the door, I looked at my phone, 6:21 pm. Hanji said she'll be back by 7 or so, Erwin must be here. I walked to the door, taking a look through the peek-hole, I see Erwin dressed in his usual white shirt and jeans with his green necktie around his neck. Moblit was hiding behind him, fear was covering his eyes.
I opened the door, "Hey guys."
"Levi, where's Hanji?"
"She's out getting some groceries. She's not gonna be back until 7."
"Good, that's good."
"Well, come in." I opened the door, letting Erwin and Moblit in.
Everyone sat down and waited. We only drank soda and soon, we heard knocking at the door.
I got up and looked through the peep hole. Hanji was carrying bags so I quickly opened the door.
"Hanji. Let me help." I say, grabbing the bags from her hands.
"Thanks." She glumly says. She closes the door behind her and looks at Erwin and Moblit. "What are you doing here?"
Moblit stands up, "Hanji, I wanted to talk to you."
"Couldn't you call me?"
"Since when do you ever answer your phone?"
"Right... Fine, let's talk." Moblit and Hanji both walk into the bedroom and I watched them, worried what Hanji was going to say.
"Levi, you were right to get Moblit here to talk to Hanji."
"Yeah, I'm still worried about her." I looked down, staring at a slice of pizza.
"You can eat right now, if you want." Erwin smiles at me.
"Shut up, I'm not eating until I know Hanji's alright."
"She'll be fine, as I saw it, she's strong."
"That's why I love her."
"There's other reasons, right?"
"What makes you say that?"
"Well... she calls you 'clean-freak' as well as knowing you closely."
"So what? We talk about our personal life to each other."
"Yeah right. Isabel and Farlan?"
"Leave them out of this."
"You told her about them, am I correct?"
"Like I said, leave them out of this. They... just leave them alone."
"Fine." Erwin throws his arms up like he surrendered.
"But... yeah, I did tell her about them."
"Ah."
"Shut up, Erwin."
"Isn't tomorrow the day of their death? How are you going to react badly?"
"Yeah, just leave them alone. I want to remember them as my friends, not dead..."
"Take my advice and tell Hanji about them. Tell her about who they are and what went down that night."
"I did tell her about them, everything you suggested."
"But did you say exactly what happened? Every detail? Yes, it will make you vulnerable, but it would also give Hanji closer to you and make her understand. Tell her more of your past, after all, you're my best friend so far and I know your past. I know the reason why you act this way. Tell her your past and she'll understand you better."
"I'll take your advice then. I'll talk to her in private."
"Good, at you listen to me."
"Yeah... I do respect you."
"Don't we all?"
"Shut up."
We both look up as the bedroom door creaks open. Moblit steps out and closes the door behind him gently.
"Moblit? What's wrong?" I ask.
"It's... not that well." He responds.
"Why? What happened?" My voice raises a bit as he backed away.
"Please, I don't want to disturb her privacy."
"But I'm her boyfriend. I don't want her to leave, not after what I told her."
"Then, you can't tell Hanji what I said, and Erwin cannot be here when I talk to you about it."
"Fine, I'll wait in the bathroom." Erwin gets up and makes his way to the bathroom. Moblit and I looked at Erwin until he closed the door to the bathroom.
"Okay, can you tell me now?" I ask him, staring as well.
"Fine." He sighs, "Hanji... is worried about you. She's afraid that... how do I say this? She wanted to surprise you."
"So, I should talk to her?"
"You should, it's really important to her and I think she's gonna break if she can't tell you right away."
"Okay, fine. Get Erwin, I'm going to see Hanji." I walk to Hanji's room and started to knock. "Hanji? It's me, Levi. Can I come in?"
A faint voice spoke, "Yeah, come in..."
I opened the door to see Hanji laying on her bed, her glasses on the side table. "Hanji..." I close the door behind me gently and locked it.
"What do you want?"
"I wanted to talk to you."
"About what?"
"About my past. Erwin said I should tell you more about my past, that way you understand me a bit more."
"Then, go on."
I sit next to Hanji, putting my hand on her arm. "Hanji... when I was young... I watched my own mother die..."
"How?" She looks at me, I could tell she was crying. Her eyes were red and puffy, under her eyes were dry streaks of tears.
"Remember when I said about me growing on the streets? My mother and I were being starved. My mother... was a prostitute to get enough food for the both of us. One day, she got ill and she couldn't get money to feed us. My stomach grumbled and I watched my mother stay in bed, coughing over and over. She then gave me her share of food, laughing and combing my hair through her fingers as I ate. One day, I tried to shake her awake but she never moved. Then, I felt her breath, I felt no puffs of air."
"Levi... I'm sorry..."
"After that, I laid in the corner, just waiting to die, to be with my mother. Until, a man came by, telling me he knew my mother, saying his name was Kenny. That's when he taught me how to survive in the streets, teaching me how to fight and how to do everything. That's why I have an anger issue... Kenny taught me everything that I know right now."
"Wow... I-I didn't know."
"Yeah... There's something else, about Isabel and Farlan."
"What about them?"
"I told a white-lie, I didn't tell the whole truth."
"What happened?"
"Well... we were told to betray Erwin, but we failed. Criminals came in and tried to lay their hands on Erwin, we didn't want them to get to him, after all, Erwin had information to put them away. I got kidnapped, so did Farlan and Isabel. They tried to force me to tell where Erwin was, that way they can murder him. I stayed loyal, but when they cut Isabel's neck... how they made Farlan's head pop... I... I couldn't keep it together. When they let me go from my bonds, I found a knife and when they approached me... I cut his arm and his throat. I made him pay... but at what cost?" I looked down, and leaned my head against Hanji. My eyes started to blur, am I crying?
"Levi... listen... I didn't know. I'm sorry, I should have known." I felt Hanji's hands wrapping on my cheeks.
"I wanted to leave that subject alone, but if I wanted to make sure that I'll stay by your side, forever, I had to tell."
"Wow... you told that, for what? To ensure I'll stay?"
"You were upset with me, correct?"
"Yeah, but not like that way... something else."
"Like what? Something to tell me?" I look at her and she looks down. She pulled me close and she kissed my cheek.
"I was worried that you'll never be a great father..."
"Father?" I looked at her and I see her smile. Something I never saw her do that in days.
"Yeah, I'm pregnant..."
"Really?" I kiss her on her lips.
"Yes, really. How do you feel about that?"
"I'm surprised... but why would you say that you are worried about me not being a good father?"
"When you beat Henry up, I was worried that if our kid made you upset, then you would be them up as well. That's what I was worried about."
"I'm not going to do that, you should know that. I would never hurt the people I love like that."
"I know, Levi. But still, understanding your past... it did clear things up. I'm glad that you know my secret that I kept away from you for days."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't know."
"Well, I know now, that's all that matters to the both of us." I kiss her again. "Are you going to accept my apology?"
"I already did."
