Chapter 2: Truths or Lies?

I never called Hanji that night, so I fell asleep with no food. It didn't bother me, hearing my stomach grumble for food. It was not the first time or the last, I'll always been hungry, I will never be full. My eyes started to pain me, so I rubbed it. I must've cried myself to sleep, I looked around and found myself on the floor. Is it because of Jasmine that I remember them? I don't know. A buzzing noise came from the phone that Hanji gave me, picked it up and it had her name.

Answering the call, "Hello?" I ask.

"Levi, there you are. I was worried about you." Her voice soothes me.

"Why are you worried?"

"You didn't contact me for dinner and I didn't want to barge in. Wanna come for breakfast?"

"Uh..."

"Come on, please? I'll pay for everything."

"Do I have a choice?"

"Well, you do have to come once I finish breakfast... so..."

"I'm coming then. Where are you at?"

"I'm waiting outside of your dorm building. Come outside when you're ready to go. I know a great place for us."

"Ugh... fine." I hung up and I stood up. I went to go take a quick shower and tried to comb my hair with my fingers. I only hope that Jasmine won't tell about that day to anyone else, I won't allow that.

Walking outside the dorm building, I see Hanji sitting on a bench, reading a book. She was laying on the bench as well, but mostly interested in her book.

"Hanji, I'm ready." I throw my hands up as she looked at me.

"Don't do that, it's creepy when you do that."

"Why not? Can't be like this?" I lowered my arms.

"Well... it's nothing. Come on, let's go eat something." Hanji closes the book and leads me to the parking lot.

Hanji's car wasn't special, it was a regular 4 seat car in silver paint. She pulled her keys out and the car beeped. She opened the door, "Levi, get in."

"Alright then." I opened the door and sat down. Hanji then started the car, music started to play, but no words.

"Dammit." Hanji starts to reach for the radio, but I grabbed her hand.

"It's fine. I want to know more about you, sometimes you can learn from music."

"Wow... I should know that. Can't guarantee you that you'll love it."

The ride was not that long, Hanji's music was sooth and calm. Does this help calm her down or make her focus. I turn to see her concentrating on the road, her eyes never taking off.

"Hanji?"

"Shut up." She says.

"Hanji."

"What?" She turns her head slightly to me.

"Are you okay? You don't seem... normal..."

"Ah. I'm like that. Besides, we're almost there, we'll talk more."

"Fine." I leaned back and I looked outside the window. Leaves were falling and the trees turned from it's bright green colors into its golden days. The car started to slow down and turned into another parking lot. We passed by a sign, Silver Birds.

Hanji stopped the car and basically told me to get out. Once I got out from the car, I smelled the brisk air. Smelling it... reminded me of the day Isabel, Farlan and I went to the park...

"Levi! Stop daydreaming and get over here." Hanji cheerful calls. I turned to see her waving her hands crazily, people looked at her like she was insane, but Hanji ignored it.

"Coming..." I chase her into Silver Birds. The cold air raised my hair and I see people dressed in clothing similar to each other. They wore silver shirts with black pants, yet the place didn't seem fancy. "Hanji?"

"Table for 2 please." Hanji says to an employee.

"Alright then, follow me." The employee says in his deep voice as he lead Hanji to tables. Hanji then looked at me, giving me a stare and used her hands to tell me to come.

The employee took us to the back of the restaurant and gave us menus.

Hanji and I both sat down. "Hanji, what the hell is this place?"

"It's a restaurant."

"No kidding, shitty glasses."

"Shitty glasses?" She looked at me.

"Yeah, I came to the conclusion to give you a nickname. Shitty glasses is the first thing that came in mind."

"Wow." I looked at the menu, trying to hide the embarrassment I got myself into.

"If you're gonna give me a nickname, I'll give you one then. How about... midget?"

"Seriously? Making fun of my height?"

"You made fun of my glasses, midget."

"Whatever." The breakfast items seemed normal... scrambled eggs, pancakes, and a lot of things. If Hanji's paying for it, then it's fine.

"What are you going to get? I'm thinking of getting waffles."

"Waffles, huh? I don't know what I'm gonna get."

"Not much of a eater, aren't ya?"

"I guess I'll go with scrambled eggs."

"Nice. I'm thinking of getting some coffee... what about you?"

"Not much of a fan of coffee." I look under drinks and found my favorite drink.

"Really? What do you drink then?"

"Black tea."

"Tea? You don't strike me as a tea guy."

"Really?"

Someone came by our table, "Hi, I'm Gerald. What can I get you?"

"I want the waffles with coffee please." Hanji says.

"Okay, and what about you, sir?"

"The scrambled eggs and black tea."

"Do you want sausage or bacon?"

"Uh... bacon."

"Alright then, we'll get this out as fast as we can." Gerald soon leaves us two alone.

"So. Now he's gone, I want to know about you more." Hanji says.

"More?"

"Yes, more like your past."

"No."

"Yes."

"I will tell glimpses, but not the whole thing. Only on one condition."

"What's the condition?"

"You tell me your past."

"I'm good with that."

"I'm... not a good kid."

"Oh... a bad boy here. How lovely." Hanji leans in and I slightly pushed her away.

"I'm technically homeless. I lived... with two people."

"I'm known as the insane girl... but there's a reason why."

"Tell me then."

"Judge me and you're dead."

"Fine. I would defend myself if you did try." I leaned in my chair, trying to listen closely to her.

Hanji looked down and removing her glasses off her face. "When I was little, I didn't like school that much. I guess I was a troublemaker. Once time, I got to the science department in my high school, and I accidentally mixed some chemicals together and blew the school up. When those chemicals mixed, I found something in that... my passion for science. Not everyone agreed with me."

"Wow..."

"Enough of me-" Hanji was interrupted as Gerald came by with our food.

"Sorry for the wait." He says as he passed our food and our drinks. Then he left us.

"You were saying?" Hanji starts to cut her waffles.

"Oh, I was trying to say that you need to explain your past. What about your friends?"

"I said I'll tell glimpses."

"Yeah, but it seems that you don't trust me. I want you to trust me, Levi. I won't tell anyone, promise."

"Ugh... I have no choice." I quickly took a few bites of the eggs and bacon, drinking a few sips of my tea. "Their names were Isabel and Farlan... my best friends. One day... on the campus... we were... ambushed. We were bullied from day to day, but it wasn't bullies. Criminals came and killed Isabel and Farlan. In self-defense, I killed them... Erwin's the only one who saw and took me in."

"Levi... I'm sorry... I didn't know." Her eyes were looking at me in sorrow.

"It's fine... it's something I wanted to keep to myself, but it seems that it would never be a secret."

"If you told me, something happened that let that secret out, huh?"

"Jasmine from my dorm."

"Oh... her..."

"Who is she?"

"She's someone who helped spread rumors how I blew the school up as a rebel. I was never loved or liked."

"Does she have a hatred for you?"

"Yeah... kept saying how guys liked me, but I never acknowledge that."

"Well, she kept saying how I should stay away from you."

"And?"

"I'm not gonna listen to her. But, why is she trying to make a move on me?"

"She's what?!" Hanji's voice started to raise.

"She tried to grab my hand, but I'm glad I was raised with high awareness."

"I'm glad you were raised that way."

"Yeah... I am too. But why would she want to flirt with me?"

"Well, because you look cute."

"Cute?"

"Yeah, adorable. Tell me, why don't you smile? Probably that's what makes you cute as hell, Levi."

"Ugh, stop it."

We were silent for the rest of our meal. Once we finished and went to the car, Hanji started to talk.

"Levi... mind if I can visit your place?"

"Why?"

"I want to check it, please?"

"No."

"Please. Please. Please." Hanji kept repeating herself that it drove me insane.

"Fine, just stop!" Hanji was a bit silent after I raised my voice. "Hanji, listen, I'm sorry."

"Apologetic?" Hanji's voice was changed.

"Listen, I'm sorry. You push me over the edge. What do you want me to do to make it up?"

"Levi, it's fine."

"I want to be friends, not enemies. We both know each other's past and I want to make sure that we're fine with each other."

"Can I please make fun of you?"

"Don't push me to the edge then."

"Okay. Take me away to your room!" Hanji laughs as I look outside. She's happy over small things, yet not being stressed. Should I tell her the truth or the lie?

Leading Hanji inside my room, she looked around in surprise.

"Something wrong?"

"It's so clean..."

"So? I don't have a lot of stuff."

"It's dust-free, Levi. What have you been doing?"

"Uh, isn't it obvious? I cleaned it."

"Ha! A clean-freak as well as a midget. I never thought those two would ever combine, but look, you're that combination."

"Har har, shut up."

"Hey! That's should be your nickname!"

"What?!"

"Yeah... clean-freak."

"No!"

"Yes, it suits you."

"Please no." I sit down at the table, laying my head on the table.

"Aw... tired?"

"Lemme take a nap. Then we can do your project."

"Okay." I peak to see Hanji walking to a chair and sitting. She tries to fall asleep and I drifted away.

"Levi?" Hanji shakes me awake as she softly speaks.

"What?"

"Come on, it's time." Hanji starts to jump around.

"Fine."

Hanji told me to take some pills with water. I did so, I nearly puked it out. She starts to laugh.

"You trying... to kill me... shitty glasses?" I gasped as I tried to recover.

"No, it's some kind of pill to help with stomachaches. I guess it didn't work, it did the opposite."

"No fucking kidding, shitty glasses." I sat down, catching my breath.

"How do you feel doing this?"

"Since I have no choice, I'll do this. Just, don't kill me."

"I won't." Hanji smiles at me. I wonder... should I tell the real truth of myself or should I tell lies?
