Chapter One
Susan's POV
It had been about three months since we'd returned from Narnia last time, and since Peter and Sierra had become engaged. There was still a war going on, but we were able to be back home in Finchley. Peter kept trying to finish his college work, and Edmund kept trying to secretly enlist in the army. We were at home one afternoon, while mum and dad were packing, preparing to leave for America. I was probably going to go with them, so I was also packing. Suddenly, I heard a knock in the door.
"I'll get it, mum!" Peter called, and I stood in the doorway. He opened the door to reveal a young army officer, holding a small packet of papers.
"Peter Pevensie?" He nodded slowly, and the officer handed the papers to him.
"You're required in London, two weeks from the morrow. The information you need is all in there." I could see Peter was getting upset, but wouldn't move.
"I'm sorry, but I didn't enlist. You must be mistaken." The officer shook his head.
"I'm sorry, sir. But there's no mistakes. Good day." The officer turned around, and left. Peter slowly closed the door, and turned around, leaning against it. He opened the envelope, and nearly shoved something back in.
"Edmund!!" He was really upset now, so I went in, Edmund and Lucy right behind me.
"Peter, what's wrong?" He held up the envelope, glaring at him.
"Did you try and enlist under my name?" His eyes widened, and he shook his head.
"What? No! I'm not stupid!" Peter squeezed his eyes shut, and then nearly collapsed into a chair. Mum and dad came in the doorway, and mum looked like she was going to cry.
"In due in London two weeks from tomorrow, and I have to go get my things a week before. I'm being shipped out." Lucy looked like she was about to start crying also, and that was how I felt.
"Why did you enlist?" She whispered, and he shook his head.
"That's the thing. I didn't. Someone must've put my name in, or enlisted under my name." Dad took a deep breath coming into the room.
"Yes, Peter. Someone did put your name in. And that someone was me." Peter stared at him, and slowly stood.
"Why? Why would you do that?! You knew I didn't want to go, that I was trying to finish school! Now I can't!" Dad sighed slightly, and nodded, but he was looking a little angry.
"Yes, I was aware. But all your doing is working on your schoolwork, and writing all those letters to someone. You're moping. You're going because you need to grow up, and stop thinking about yourself so much." Peter's arms dropped to his sides, and he started leaving, but stopped in the doorway.
"Fine. But just so you know, those letters were to a young woman I know. I don't know when I'm going to see her again, but I do know one thing. I know I love her. And I was going to ask her to marry me. But I guess I'm thinking about myself too much for that to happen." He dropped something as he left, and I picked it up, looking at it. It was the plain gold band he'd gotten for when he married Sierra. We heard his door slam shut, and I stood with the ring, slipping it into my pocket. I looked at Edmund and Lucy, who stood there in shock, and beckoned to them. They followed me up to my room, and I closed the door behind us.
"I'm not leaving. I'm staying here." Lucy's eyes widened.
"What? Why wouldn't you go?" I sighed.
"Lucy, Peter's being forced to go and fight. I'm not leaving." Then Edmund spoke up quietly.
"What would happen if he were to die here? Would he go to Narnia?" Then, we heard Peter's voice quietly interject as he stood in the doorway.
"I don't know. If that is what would happen, it would almost be a blessing. I promised Sierra that the next time I was in Narnia, I'd marry her. I also promised that I wouldn't leave again. Even if that means I don't ever come back here." We all simply stared at him for a minute, and he came in, sitting beside Lucy on the bed. Finally, Edmund spoke up.
"You....you'd give up living here to live in Narnia with Sierra?" He nodded.
"You'd do the same for Cahira." Edmund looked down, and then back up.
"Of course I would! But that's....that's different." Peter shrugged slightly, shaking his head.
"How? How is that different? You'd give up living here for the girl you love. I'd give up living here or ever coming back here for Sierra. There's no difference." He sighed, looking at the floor, and Lucy leaned against Peter, tears trickling down her cheeks.
"I don't want you to go." She whispered, and Peter wrapped his arms around her, crying.
"I know, Lucy. I don't want to either." Edmund stood, joining the hug, and within a minute, we were all in one big group hug. This wasn't the way we'd wanted things to play out......But we'd make it through somehow.
