I sit with my mom in the living room while she goes through her bills, and I aimlessly search through the TV channels. My eyes keep darting towards the clock, my anticipation to see Christian too great to relax and enjoy the mundane act of watching morning television. As the minutes slowly tick by to ten o'clock, I hear the all too familiar sound of Christian's motorcycle pull up outside.
My mom glances up at me and catches my eye, as she smiles and says, "Sounds like you have a visitor."
I feel my cheeks heat up and I stammer, "M-Mom, please, d-don't embarrass me."
My mom chuckles and replies, "I'll behave, I swear."
I can still feel the heat in my cheeks as I get up to answer the door, and when I pull it open Christian is standing on the other side with his fist posed to knock. He smiles at me and I just feel my cheeks grow hotter as I say, "H-Hey."
Christian eyes me curiously and asks, "Why are you blushing?"
His question only makes my blush deepen, and I can feel the heat creeping down into my neck. I mentally shake myself and quickly turn away to avoid any more embarrassment, and ask, "Do you want to hang out here or go to your place? Or do you have something else in mind?"
"We can say bye, and then if you want to go, I do have something in mind," Christian replies.
I nod as I make my way back into the living room, where my mom is still sitting in the chair. She's abandoned her bills to smile up at us and ask, "So what is the plan for today, exactly?"
"Mom, I already told you we were going bowling," I say.
"I know that, honey. I'm curious about the two hours before you go to the bowling alley," she replies.
I internally cringe, and wish I had the power to sweep us out of the house and far away from my mother's prying curiosity. But I can't, so I'm forced to suffer through heated cheeks while Christian answers her questions.
"I was thinking we would hang out at the park," Christian replies with a smile. "The weather's great so I thought a bit of sunshine would be nice."
My mom smiles and glances between us before she replies, "Well, Christian, I think that's a wonderful idea. I think I have some old tennis rackets" —- she mutters as she stands up —- "or something you can do while—-"
"Oh no, Ms. Bayes, thank you but I have everything planned out," Christian says.
You have what planned out? I think curiously.
My mom pauses on her way to the hall closet and asks, "Are you sure, it's really no trouble."
Christian smiles. "I'm sure, thank you, Ms. Bayes."
No, I'd really like anything but Christian's idea of fun right now . . . So please, proceed mom.
My mom smiles too and says, "Well, I won't keep you then. Have fun, and be safe you two. Tell everyone I said hi, and be home before ten, Beau."
Damn.
My cheeks heat up as I mumble, "Okay, mom, see you later."
"Bye, sweetie. I love you," she says.
"I love you too," I reply as my cheeks burn hotter.
"See you later, Ms. Bayes," Christian says cheerly as he reaches out for my hand and leads me outside. I follow him defeatedly, while Christian beams brightly beside me.
I sigh as he passes me a helmet and ask, "So where are we really going?"
Christian laughs and replies, "To the park, Beau."
I eye him doubtfully and mumble, "Why don't I believe you . . ."
Christian just grins and grabs my hand, and gently tugs me forward. I sigh as I swing my leg over the bike and settle behind him. I wind my arms around his waist and lean my forehead on his back as I sigh, "Okay, let's go to the park . . ."
When the bike comes to a steady stop beneath us, I slowly open my eyes to see that we're surrounded by trees and inside a clearing that has swings, a slide, a juggle gym, a teeter totter, and so many other things for children to occupy their playfulness. I blink in surprise and slowly unwind my tight grip from around Christian's waist as I mumble, "We're at the park . . ."
Christian chuckles. "Beau, I said we were coming here, don't sound so surprised."
"But I . . . I thought you were joking," I mumble.
Christian just chuckles as he puts down the kick stand before sliding off the bike, he glances at me from over his shoulder and grins as he says, "I'll race you."
I just stare at him dumbfounded for a good long minute, but mentally shaking myself I quickly climb off the bike and half-stumble my way towards Christian. I stare up at him curiously as I think, What game are you playing? I purse my lips and glance away from Christian to take in the park. I quickly scan all the play equipment, before pointing towards the pole holding up the monkey bars as I say, "I'll race you to the monkey bars."
Christian grins. "You're on."
I narrow my eyes at him and say, "The winner gets to pick the reward, and no dirty tricks. Just a clean race, got it?"
Christian's grin widens and he crosses his heart as he replies, "No tricks, just fun."
I continue to watch him suspiciously from the corner of my eye as I get in my runners stance, and say, "One. Two . . . Three!" I shout, and then we're both racing forward. I push myself to move fast, and notice Christian is pushing himself just as hard.
As we race each other, I begin to grow nervous that I'll lose because Christian's legs are much longer than my own. But than again, I've been running away from bullies practically my whole life, and I have to be faster than them to avoid getting caught. I find myself picturing a bully, and the familiar fear of getting caught spurs me to dig my shoes into the ground to propel myself forward.
But I've became to focused on myself and concentrating too much on being victorious, that I completely forget to keep an eye on Christian, who's now a good two strides ahead of me. I curse internally and see the victory slip through my fingers, at the same time as Christian slaps his hand onto the blue metal pole of the monkey bars.
I feel myself deflate, and my drive to win weakens as I defeatedly jog up beside him. I exhale a heavy breath and lean back against the pole as I sigh, "You win. What's my punishment?"
"I thought I was picking a reward?" Christian asks.
I roll my eyes and scoff as I reply, "Oh, we both know your 'reward' is my loss. So what is it? Are you doing to make me do the monkey bars, or get on a swing and make me close my eyes because that is scary!"
Christian chuckles, and he puts his hand in his pocket before pulling it out and tosses something to me. I gasp as I quickly throw my hands out to catch whatever it is, and when it lands perfectly in my palms I feel the blood drain from my face. My eyes snap up to Christian's face as I cry, "Your keys!"
Christian grins. "Yup, my keys. Helmet up, Beau, I'm teaching you how to ride."

A/N: 😄 Oh my god, I love those last few sentences. So, do you guys think Beau will actually go through with Christian's 'reward'? Or do you think he'll weasel his why out of it? *laughs*
Well, come back for the next chapter to find out! 😊 Thank you for reading, commenting, and voting! Have a wonderful day/night!
