Chapter 23
The same day:
Tyler's POV
After twenty minutes of driving through average traffic, I pulled out in front of Alexa's building.
I park my Jaguar in the visitor parking lot and make my way to the elevator, which will lead me to Alexa's apartment on the tenth floor.
Once out of the elevator, I walk down the long corridor with apartments on either sides of me until I reach Alexa's.
She lived in apartment twenty-three. I glanced at the name plate, which read, Alexa Owens.
I remember something as soon as I look at the 23 in gold font on the front door.
There was this American TV show I'd watch back in college. It was named Don't trust the b**** in apartment 23.
I couldn't help but laugh when I compared the show's name to Alexa's apartment.
Kenny would've laughed too.
Also, when I first met Kenny, her case number was twenty-three from her previous hospital.
I can't help but think of her every minute of my existence.
I shake my thoughts away and ring the doorbell.
I hear fast footsteps, and within seconds, Alexa is in front of me with the door wide open.
"Hey Ty, I'm so glad you're here," she squeals with joy.
"Hi," I smile.
She moves aside so that I can walk in, and shuts the door behind me.
"So, how do I look?" she asks, wiggling her perfectly crafted eyebrows.
"Huh? Yeah, fine," I say, looking at her very-short shorts and a super-tiny t-shirt.
"Just fine? It took me ages to find the right outfit, Ty," she adds dramatically.
"Well, it's not like it matters anyway. You look fine," I say coldly.
I was least interested in the way she dressed or looked.
"Oh," she says, sounding offended, and walks into her kitchen.
Oh no.
I follow her into her kitchen.
"I'm sorry, Alexa. I didn't mean what I said. It's just that I'm too stressed right now," I say, exhaling loudly.
"It's okay, Ty. I know you're upset because your best friend isn't doing too well," she says, walking close to me.
"She's not just my best friend; she's my girlfriend too," I say, looking at the surprise on her face.
"Wha- what are you talking about? Since when?" her eyes are the size of saucers.
"It's almost going to be two weeks now," I say, my thoughts drifting back to the day I told Kenny how I felt about her.
"Two weeks?" Alexa sounds offended.
"Yes," I smile.
"And you didn't even tell me about it?" she asks, sounding mad.
"Wait, don't you know? Almost everyone on our floor knows," it was my turn to be surprised.
Alexa didn't know? I find that hard to believe.
"Oh, it looks like I was left out," she says, shrugging her shoulders. "Anyways, dinner's ready."
She distances herself from me and goes to the dining area.
I follow her.
The dining table was a small round table for four and overlooked a small park from the large windows.
Alexa plonks herself on a chair, and I sit across her.
"I've made some pot roast and rice. Also, there's mint ice cream for dessert," she says flatly.
"Thank you," I say as I serve myself a huge portion of the main course.
I didn't realize how hungry I was until I looked at the food.
Dinner was so awkward and silent. Alexa focused only on the ingredients on her plate.
When I couldn't take the silence anymore, I spoke, "Alexa, what's wrong?"
"Oh, nothing, Ty. I just feel left out because I didn't know about your little girlfriend and you," she says.
I nodded, urging her to continue.
"It's just that; I thought maybe you're single and she was just your best friend. I didn't know there was something between you two," she says slowly.
I kept mute because I didn't know what to say.
"Well, you want to talk about anything? I'm here," she says in a loud voice.
When I didn't speak, she continued, "Come on, Ty, tell me."
And that was all it took.
I spoke for the rest of our dinner, telling her how upset I was ever since Kenny was critical. How much I missed her and every little thing related to her.
Alexa seemed to listen with mild irritation but didn't speak a word or interrupt me.
Once we were done with dinner, Alexa got a tub of mint ice cream, which we shared on her couch.
Ice cream and talking to Alexa made me feel better.
That's what Kenny once told me: "Ice cream and talking to you makes me feel better."
"Ty, there's something I need to tell you," Alexa says nervously.
"Yeah?" I ask, trying to focus on the present rather than what Kenny said.
"Ty, I've been working with you in Travenford for two years, and every minute I spend around you is never dull. You're the most attractive man I've seen, and believe me, you don't know how much I love you. I've loved you since the very first day I saw you, and in that moment I knew you had to be mine," she says, looking deep into my eyes.
What's happening?
"You're attractive, and so am I. We'd be the best couple ever. Let's just forget about all the affairs we've had in the past and begin our future together. There's no one else I want to be with. Only you, Ty," she says, taking my hands in hers.
"What are you even talking about? Alexa, I have no feelings for you. I see you only as a friend, and I love Kenna. So I'm very sorry that there's no chance for us," I say, pulling my hands away from hers.
I could never forget Kenna and be with Alexa.
Also, yes, I just friend zoned her.
"But it doesn't look like Kenna's going to live for long. Who knows, she might die if she gets worse or either live forever in a coma," she spits.
"Shut your fucking mouth, Alexa. Do not utter a single word about Kenny!" I yell, getting up from her couch and feeling rageful.
"Shh, don't waste your time on that girl. She isn't worth you, Ty. She isn't even pretty—well, not prettier than me," she says, sounding proud of herself.
"Kenny is one million times prettier than you, physically and mentally. Her thoughts aren't as ugly as yours," I retort.
"Ty, babe. Please don't talk about her. Calm down now. You're here with me. Let's not talk about her," she says, slowly rising up from her couch and moving towards me.
Has this woman lost her mind?
"Have you lost it, Alexa?" I ask with disbelief and disgust.
She wasn't the caring and nice Alexa I knew anymore. She was an evil Alexa who had shit filled in her brains.
"Ty, I love you. Please don't ignore me," she says, kissing me and snapping me out of my thoughts.
I immediately moved away from her, saying, "Get away, Alexa."
Did she just kiss me while I was zoning out?
"Come here, Ty," she says in her melodious voice. "Let's go to my bedroom."
That's when I lost my mind.
"Shut up, Alexa. Just shut it. Please stop calling me Ty. I will never like you after what you just did, because you clearly don't deserve me. I love Kenna and will only be hers," I say, walking towards the exit of her apartment.
"You will never be happy with that girl. Come back, Tyler!" I heard her yell in the background as I slammed the front door on my way out.
I had to get away from this woman as soon and as far as I could.
I couldn't help but think of Kenny right now.
Isn't that what I always do?
I had to see her now. I felt like I cheated on her even though I was tricked into the kiss.
I get into my car and drive to Travenford as fast as I can.
.
.
I park my Jaguar in my assigned spot for the doctors and hurry to the entrance.
"Hey, Dr. Hart," Chris, the night shift receptionist for Travenford, greets me.
"Hey Chris, see ya in a while," I say as I jog towards the elevator.
Once on the sixth floor, in my department, I rush to Kenny's room.
It's almost midnight, and I know Erin and Danica would be awake, probably watching something on television or talking.
I knock lightly on her door and swing it open.
What I see before me is very atrocious.
Jason sits on a chair, holding Kenna's hand. And he's alone with her.
Alone with my girl.
Why is he even here?
This day couldn't get any worse.
