Chapter 2

The same day.

Kenna's POV

So I'm in a hospital. A place that I've hated and avoided all my life.

I want to get out of here as soon as I can.

I mean, I probably ended up here because I passed out due to too much excitement, which means that I couldn't be here for too long.

More like, I won't be here for too long.

But it is a nice room. It looks pretty much like mine, except for all these machines that kept beeping endlessly and the horrific instruments and needles that I'm absolutely terrified of.

This room has beige walls like mine; the bed is in the center of the room like mine; and it has me too!

Heh.

Okay, that wasn't a wisecrack.

.

.

Ally walks in with an unreadable expression on her face.

"What's wrong?" I inquire.

"You can't leave the hospital until they run a few tests," was her reply.

I stared at her blankly. She looks worried.

I asked her again, "What's wrong, Ally?"

"We'll know for sure once they've run the tests."

''After the tests? I've probably passed out due to too much excitement. What tests do they want to run?" I say it in a wobbly voice.

She doesn't say a word. She just stares at her feet, or maybe the floor.

There's a brief silence.

And then she says, ''The doctors suspect it to be much more than just excitement." As I stare in horror, she continues, "They suspect something serious''.

I hear my iPhone chime my ringtone. I stared at the caller ID that read it's mom. I answer it and hold my phone to my right ear.

''Kenna, baby, are you okay? What's wrong, baby?" There's panic in her voice.

I guess Ally called her to inform her about my condition.

''Don't worry, mom, it's nothin-", I was about to say when Ally grabbed my phone and walked outside my room to talk privately to mom.

I began counting numbers in my mind. I always did that when I was eager about something, ever since I was a kid.

1. 2. 3.

.

.

.

297. 298. 299. 300.

Ally walked back in. Five minutes, I thought.

She walks up to me and gives me a tight hug. I threw my hands around her without hesitation.

We sit there in silence until the doctor asks me to proceed with the tests.

She gives me a quick hug before I walk out to get done with the tests.

.

.

.

Once I was done with the tests, I returned to my room. Hospital room, I mean.

Ally's perched on one of the two chairs in my hospital room.

We sit there in awkward silence.

I started counting again. 1. 2. 3.

.

.

10, when Ally breaks the silence, "Did you get done with all the tests?"

"Yeah, that's what the doctor said," I reply.

She nods in reply.

Just then, Mom rushes in. There's pure horror in her eyes, even though she tries to hide it.

She almost ran up to me and hugged me, and she began sobbing.

She held me like that for a while. I don't count how long, because I was lost in that hug with her until the doctor interrupted us.

He signals for Mom and Ally to follow him outside my room. ''I'll be back, baby'', mom says, giving my shoulders a slight squeeze.

Ally nods again, and they exit my room.

Let the counting begin!

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

.

.

.

.

.

626. 627. 628. 629, and they were back in my room.

The color from mom's face has completely drained out—the exact look we got when we watched one of those really scary horror movies.

"The doctor said you can't leave until the reports are out tomorrow." "You need to be kept under observation," Mom says.

What? Tomorrow? Seriously?

I wanted to yell about how mad I feel.

The mere thought of me spending the night at the hospital terrified me.

Mom gives me a quick hug and says that she's going to our apartment to get a few things for the night and also call her boss to inform him that she'll be missing work for a day or two.

I nodded, almost grasping nothing but slightly aware of what was going on.

Mom asks Ally to stay with me until she returns.

A nurse in white scrubs walks in with the documentation and asks mom to sign at various spots on the patient document.

Mom rushes off once that's dealt with.

So it was just Ally and me.

She flicks on the tiny television that's in front of my bed. She kept flicking on to different channels until there was some beauty show going on.

She glances at me, mentally asking me if I preferred watching it. It didn't matter to me, so I nodded in agreement. She grins like a kid and is soon engrossed in the show.

I was starting to feel terrified. Too worried about what is going to come next.

I'm not the kind of person who worries about anything. But that changed today, right here in this hospital room.

.

.

.

.

Almost 2 hours later, mom arrives with a duffel bag.

She thanks Ally and gives her a tight hug. Ally gives me another hug and a kiss on my cheek before I bid her off.

Mom and I nibble on the cheese sandwiches she made before she got here.

Once that was done, mom changed for the night in her pajamas, and here I am in this silly hospital gown, looking like a clown.

That rhymed pretty well.

.

.

.

As mom lay in her tiny bed, which is next to mine, she whispered, "Everything's going to be okay, Kenny."

"Yes, mom," I say, sounding way more confident than I expected.

"Good night, angel." "Mommy loves you," she says aloud, making every word sound so beautiful.

"Good night, mommy, I love you," I say, trying to sound as calm as I could while hearing my own heartbeat racing so quick that I thought it would explode.

This definitely wasn't a good night. At all.

I start counting again, unable to sleep.

.

.

.

.

.

The last number I remember counting was 1279 before I drifted off to sleep.                                                _
