Chapter 19

Three days later:

Kenna's POV

I was now getting ready for my second date with Tyler.

Things were moving so fast between us, but I didn't mind.

I mean, he's such an amazing guy.

And not to forget what an absolute hottie he is.

Mom and Danica forced me to wear a dress, and I don't even know why I agreed.

Something about this date feels special.

So, I get into the washroom of my hospital room and take off my hospital gown.

I wear a blue floral-printed dress that ends mid-thigh and my favorite pair of white Converse.

I look at my bald head in the mirror and think about what can be done.

Since I was too lazy to think about anything, I let it go.

I walked out of the washroom only to see mom and Danica looking at me with much fondness.

"What?" I ask, looking between mom and Danica.

"You look so gorgeous, Kenny. Let me snap a picture of you," mom says.

"Mom, this isn't prom," I say, rolling my eyes.

She laughs at this and snaps a picture of me anyway.

It's almost seven o'clock, and Tyler will be here anytime soon.

I unplug my phone from my charger and hear a knock on the door.

Finally.

"I'll get that," mom says, and hurries towards the door.

The door swings open to reveal Jason.

Okay, I honestly expected to see Tyler.

"Come in, Jason," mom says, making way for Jason.

He looks surprised when he sees me.

"Um, are you going somewhere, Kenna? You aren't in your hospital gown. I mean, wow, you look amazing," he says, looking at me thoroughly.

"Yeah, she's going out on a date," Danica says, and the color from Jason's face drains.

"Oh, with whom?" he manages to ask.

"With Tyler," mom says enthusiastically.

Jason's mouth falls open and then shuts it as soon as he realizes what happened.

Just then, there's a soft knock on the door, and seconds later, Tyler emerges.

"Oh, hey guys," he says, looking at everyone except me.

"Hello, my beautiful girl," he says, walking towards me and giving me a hug.

"Enjoy you two. I've got to go," Jason abruptly says before storming out of the room.

"What's up with him?" Tyler asks, raising his eyebrows at Danica.

"I don't know; he seemed disappointed about Kenna's date," she says.

I wonder why.

Tyler's expression turns stone-cold. His gaze flicks to the ground as he stares at it for a moment.

"I'll take care of that," he mumbles, but I heard him.

"It's okay. Let it go," I whisper as I walk up to him.

He looks at me with a stoic expression.

What if Tyler fires Jason?

I wouldn't want that to happen.

"Please?" I plead, looking into his eyes.

"Okay Kenny. Just because you asked me to," he says, loosening his shoulders.

"You two look so adorable together. Strike a pose for me," mom says, looking emotional.

"Oh, come on, mom. This isn't prom," I say, rolling my eyes again.

"That's alright, Kenny. Let's just pose anyway," Tyler says, pulling me closer to him.

He stands behind me, wrapping his arms around my shoulders and resting his chin on my head.

"Say cheese," Danica says funnily.

I put my hands on his forearms and smiled as wide as I could.

"Lovely," mom says, admiring our picture.

.

.

Tyler and I were on our way to wherever he was taking me.

I take in his appearance, as I didn't have the chance earlier.

He had on a pair of light blue jeans that matched his denim jacket and wore a black T-shirt inside.

His hair was combed upwards, and it sat perfectly still on his head.

We drove for almost forty-five minutes, I guess.

He said this would be a perfect surprise, but it would take time to get there as it was far from the city.

Tyler pulls up in a lonely area. There aren't any people in sight.

It looks like an isolated area, or maybe a small part of the wilderness.

He gets out of the driver's seat and makes his way to open the passenger door for me.

As soon as I step out, Tyler stands close to me, almost pushing me up against the car.

"Kenny, I know you don't like to be blindfolded. Can I at least cover your eyes until we get there? It isn't too far. Please?" he says with those gorgeous eyes, boring deep into mine.

There's no way I could refuse.

"Okay, Tyler," I say, shrugging my shoulders.

"Thanks," he says, and quickly pecks both my cheeks.

Tyler places his right hand on my eyes, covering them.

His fingers are so soft and gentle—the fingers that have taken care of so many.

He places his left arm on my waist, leading me towards the beginning of our date.

Tyler guides me as I make my way according to the instructions provided by him.

After waking for a minute or two, we stopped.

Tyler whispers into my ear, "Open your eyes, princess."

He lets go of the hand that covered my eyes, and I slowly flutter them open.

Oh. My. Goodness.

The view ahead of me was magical.

An aisle of candles was beautifully lit up, leading to an open tent, and the stars above us shone brighter than all of the other days.

It was just so perfect.

I turn around and look at Tyler, who is smiling at me.

I give him a tight hug and say, "It's absolutely gorgeous, Tyler. I love it already."

"I'm glad, Kenny. Let's go," he says, grabbing my hand and leading me to the open tent.

In the tent was a table for two with a bouquet of beautiful flowers and a basket of food.

Once I was sat on my chair and Tyler on his, he says with a look of disappointment, "I'm sorry, Kenny, I was so busy with prepping up that I couldn't manage to cook for us."

"That's okay, Tyler. This is way too beautiful. You've done so much; it doesn't matter if you didn't cook," I say, taking his hands in mine.

His face lights up. "I got you your favorite pizza instead, but a customized version so that it fits your current diet," he says, kissing my hand.

"Oh wow. Wait, how do you know my favorite pizza?" I ask, raising my eyebrows.

"Erin's of great help, you know?" he says this, winking at me.

Okay, so it was mom.

Tyler serves me a slice of my favorite pizza, chicken pepperoni.

I take a bite of it, and believe me, this is paradise on a slice.

Tyler pours us some fruit punch, this one different from last time's, and we enjoy our pizza, making small talk in between.

Once we were done with our pizza, Tyler led me away from the tent.

"Come with me, Kenny. There's something I need to show you," he says, leading us towards the edge of the trees.

As we walk into the woods, Tyler's grip gets tighter around my hand.

We stop at a particular tree, and in front of it is a blanket sprawled out.

"Come here; the stars look gorgeous," he says, pulling me down with him on the blanket.

We lay there under the stars.

The view was so gorgeous and mesmerizing, so I snapped a picture of it.

"Tyler, look at all these beautiful stars," I say, watching him smile.

"Look, those are my parents," I say, pointing at two big stars.

"Hello there," Tyler says, and I laugh.

"I'll be up there soon, Tyler. Do come here and say hello to me when I'm gone," I say, looking at him.

"Shush. I'm not letting you go already," he says, sitting straight.

"Kenny, there's something I need to tell you. I mean, I know it's early, but I can't wait any longer," he says, biting his lip.

I sit upright and place my hand on one of his thighs. "What's up?"

He takes my hands in his and looks into my eyes and says, "Kenny, look, ever since I saw you that day in Travenford, I wished to see more of you. It's not that I wanted your results to be positive. It's just that you were so captivating that I wished to see you again. And I did. So now that you're here with me, I want to make the most of it. I want to see you for all the days of my life, every single day of it. I need you to be there around me, for me, and with me. Maybe you're confused about this and need time, but any amount of time is never enough. I love you, Kenna Joy, and I need you to be the woman I love for the rest of my life."

By now, I was on the verge of crying.

"Oh, my God, Tyler," I say, hugging him.

He tightens the hug as I begin sobbing.

I pull back and say, "Tyler, I had no idea that we'd come this far. I mean, I thought you were just flirting, and all I had was a tiny crush on you. But as the days went by, I found myself falling for you. I'm falling for you so hard and so fast. I would love to be with you, Tyler. The only thing keeping me from doing this is my fear. The fear of not being there for you. The fear of not waking up one morning next to you. The fear of not being worthy of your love. The fear of losing you. I've lost people I love so dearly, Tyler, and I don't think I can lose anyone else. First my parents, then Ally; I don't want to lose you."

He carefully listens to every word I say, paying utmost attention.

"Kenny, I know how things are for you. I cannot avoid them, but I can surely be there with you until it's over. I know you've never been with a guy before, and my last relationship was back when I was in college. So, we're a little rusty at love, but we'll be top-coated pretty soon," he says, laughing at the last line.

I smile at his gorgeous face.

This boy has done so much in such a short time; imagine spending a lifetime with him.

"Okay, Tyler, I don't know how long I'll live, and if I live long, it better be by your side. So yes, I'd absolutely love to be yours," I say, making him cover his face and laugh.

"Oh, my God, it's finally happened. You're mine," he says, pulling me completely into him.

I couldn't help but laugh at this.

He pulls away and looks at me, saying, "I promise to never let go of you, Kenny. Not now, not ever, not until the end."

I lean in, closing the gap between us.

Our faces were barely inches apart, and I couldn't help but smile.

Tyler closes the gap and kisses me. It was okay at first, but then it felt magical. Our mouths connected like random puzzle pieces perfectly fitting together.

Once we broke apart, I couldn't hide the blush on my face, and neither could Tyler.

We lay there once again, under the stars.

I lay my head on Tyler's chest as he wrapped his arms around me.

Today was definitely one of the best days of my life.

This day made me feel like my life wasn't ending but was just beginning anew.

It gave me hope. And hope was all I had.
