Chapter 12
The next day:
Kenna's POV
Earlier today, I had my first checkup after my chemo.
Tyler asked me if I felt any pain or side effects from the treatment.
I told him about the slight dizziness I felt after he left last night. He didn't say much at first, just jotted stuff down.
After the checkup, Danica cleared her throat and excused herself from the room.
Here we go again.
"Well, you're going to have to get used to this more often," he says, smirking at me.
"What?" I look at him in confusion, trying to avoid the fact that he has read my mind.
"Oh, you very well know what Kenny darling", he says, making his way towards me.
I try to play dumb, but he gives me such a look that I can't help but give up.
"Yeah, I get it. But it's not that I'm complaining," I blurted out accidentally.
Oh crap, Kenna.
As soon as I say that, his face lights up.
Okay, he's laughing at how desperate I sound.
"Yup, me too," he says with the largest grin on his face.
As I try to recover from the shock, he speaks again: "I hope you haven't forgotten that we're going to be hanging out today."
Of course not; I have been waiting for it.
"Oh no, I haven't," I say, trying to sound calm.
"Kenny, you look so cute when you try to cover up something," he says, making me blush.
"I'll be at your room at five p.m. Be ready, pretty girl," he says, and walks out of the room.
It takes me five minutes to process what just happened before walking back to my room.
.
.
.
Now that I'm back in my hospital room, I'm getting ready to hang out with Tyler.
Or for our date, as mom said.
Well, I don't think of it as a date because I'm pretty sure he doesn't feel a thing for me.
I mean, it's not that I like him or anything.
Okay, maybe I find him extremely cute.
But I'm sure the feeling isn't mutual.
I am just crushing on my doctor. Come on, Kenna!
Well, I can't go to the hospital garden in this stupid gown.
Definitely not.
I ruffle through my bag and find just the right outfit.
I put on a pair of light blue jeans and a black T-shirt that read "DOPE." I also put on a pair of black sneakers.
I fix my hair into a ponytail and am content with my look.
I walk towards the bedside table to grab my phone, when there's a knock on the door.
I grab my phone and almost run to answer the door.
"Careful," mom says in between watching some random movie on the television.
I swing the door open to reveal Tyler in gray ripped jeans and a white T-shirt.
Oh boy.
His eyes widen in shock as he looks at me.
"What? Where's your hospital gown? Why are you even wearing this?", he floods me with questions.
"Seriously? You wanted me to wear a hospital gown and hang out with you? Seriously, Tyler?", I ask him and roll my eyes.
He seems to understand what I said and nods his head enthusiastically, signaling no.
"Of course not; I'm sorry. I'm glad I can see you in something other than the hospital gown," he jokes.
"Yeah," I say.
"Let's go and not waste any time now. Shall we?" he says this, extending his arm towards me.
I take his hand as we walk away together.
.
.
.
Tyler was right; the hospital garden was gorgeous. Really gorgeous.
Travenford has a very large campus. That's why it has a large parking area, a gigantic hospital with large rooms and corridors, and a large garden. I mean, this was almost half the size of a huge amusement park.
The garden had a perfectly manicured lawn with beautiful flowers planted in it. There's a fountain at the center of the garden that is surrounded by wooden benches. There were also some trees planted at precise spots in the garden.
"Isn't it gorgeous?" Tyler asks, snapping me out of my trance.
"Yes. Very gorgeous," I say, looking at him and then at the garden.
His fingers find mine and are linked together as we make our way to a bench Tyler has in mind.
Tyler doesn't let go of our hands as we sit on the bench. It's a bench away from most of the others, almost towards the end of the garden.
"This is my favorite spot, or more like my favorite place," he says, looking at me.
"That's nice of you. To bring me to your favorite place," I say with a huge grin on my face.
"Well, let's just say I brought my favorite person to my favorite place," he says, and I swear I could see the blush on his face.
But what I didn't realize was that I had turned into a blushing mess.
"So tell me I'm your favorite too," he says, sticking his tongue out.
Well, you're my favorite doctor.
"Okay, you're my favorite doctor," I say, laughing nervously.
"Favourite doctor? Who has a favorite doctor? You should have a favorite person, not a favorite doctor", he says, rolling his eyes.
Goodness, this man looks so good.
I smile at him, not saying a word. I don't want to rush into anything. I haven't been in a relationship in the past, so I don't know what's happening here.
Let's just say I was saving it for the right person. I didn't know yet if Tyler was the right one.
And I bet he's not even interested. He's just flirting, and-
"Earth to Kenna. What are you thinking about?" he asks, interrupting my thoughts.
"Oh, nothing important. Tell me your story," I say, trying to avoid my lousy thoughts.
He eyes me suspiciously but shrugs his shoulders.
"Well, my life isn't very interesting. I have two siblings: an older brother and a younger sister. I moved out of my parents house when I graduated from medical college. I live in an apartment nearby. My life has been normal, with happiness and sadness at the right times, I guess", he says, staring into the distance ahead.
"Oh, that's short. Well, can I ask you something? I've been waiting to ask you this ever since I saw you", I said, looking at him nervously.
"Sure, Kenny, anything you want to," he says.
"So, I wanted to ask you..." I prolong the silence to add a dramatic touch.
"Yeah?" he prompts, nervous.
I laugh at him, and he blinks at me.
He's so mad at me.
"Oh my god, I'm sorry, Tyler," I say, trying to stop laughing.
"Yeah, you better be," he says, glaring at me.
He looks like he's mad, but I can see a faint smile on his face.
"Yeah, so on a serious note, when I read your name and that you were the Head of the Department, I thought you'd be some old man who wore spectacles and had gray hair. But you're young. How are you even the Head of the department?", I asked my most curious question.
He laughs in response.
"Well, the perks of having an uncle who's one of the founders of Travenford," he says, winking at me.
"So wait, you don't know anything about the medical stuff? Like, are you a fake doctor?" I am terrified.
"Lord, no Kenna. I'm a doctor. A real hematologist. Like, I do know everything a doctor needs to know", he says, looking at me.
"Oh, so how did such a young guy become the head of the department?" I prompt, placing a hand on my chin to empathize with my curiosity.
"Well, my uncle didn't have any kids, and I was his most loved nephew. Since I was interested in the medical field, he decided to get me to Travenford. On my twenty-first birthday, he asked me for my birthday wish. I asked him to make me head of the oncohematology department as a joke. Well, my uncle took that seriously, and here I am," he says, running a hand through his hair.
"Oh" was all I could manage.
"Since then, I have loved my profession and have strived to work hard towards being a better doctor," he goes on.
Man really does love his profession.
Note to self: He loves his profession, not his patients.
"Kenna, can you stop zoning out and talk to me?" he says, almost losing his patience.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," I say, and I give him all my attention.
.
.
.
Tyler and I chatted for a really long time. We talked about our favorites and realized that we had a lot in common.
Except for the fact that maybe I have a tiny crush on him and he doesn't have one on me.
Also, he loves sunsets; I didn't fancy them much.
As we talked, we watched as the sun set in the distance. It looked very beautiful.
The sky looked like a canvas dipped in gold, which got lighter and lighter with the passing minutes.
Tyler's face lit up, and you could see the shine in his eyes as he watched the sun set.
Well, let's just say that I will love sunsets from now on.
