Chapter 11

The same day:

Tyler's POV

Here I was. With the most gorgeous woman I've seen in my entire life.

She's sitting in this ugly hospital gown with wires wrapped around her, and yet she looks so gorgeous.

I make my way towards her, and I notice she stiffens.

"Hey Kenna, I won't hurt you," I say.

Although I hurt her earlier today by piercing her with needles during the chemotherapy.

She relaxes at once.

I make my way towards her bed, pull a chair close to her, and sit there.

"So, do you feel any better?" I ask eagerly, wanting to know how she's feeling after her first chemotherapy.

It's such a long word. I guess I'll call it chemo.

"I feel kind of weak, and my hand hurts. Other than that, I'm good," she says with a smile.

Damn, she's one strong girl.

Relieved with her answer, I feel myself relax.

"So, is it okay for us to be friends? I mean, I think you're a really nice girl besides the fact that you're a nice patient," I ask nervously.

There's a glint of joy in her eyes.

"Yes, of course. I'd love to be your friend!" she exclaims in an overly excited tone.

I'm surprised that she'd be this excited.

Though we've met only a few times, she has barely spoken to me. I don't know if she has a lot of friends or if any of them would come visit, so I thought maybe I could be her friend. It can get pretty lonely in here.

She looks embarrassed as soon as she speaks and tries to cover it up, saying, "I'm sorry, it wasn't supposed to sound like that."

"That's alright. I get it," I smile.

She smiles brightly. And once again flashes her most gorgeous smile.

"Would it be okay if I asked you to hang out with me?" I ask, trying to sound calm, but I know I failed.

She looks at me in confusion.

"Um, hang out? I mean, does that mean I'm allowed to leave the hospital?" she asks, grinning like a kid.

That smile, though.

"Well, for now, we can just hang out in the hospital. I know it sounds weird, but this hospital has lovely little places to visit. If there's improvement in your health, then we can surely move out of here", I say in my professional tone.

"Seriously? Who even hangs out in a hospital, Tyler?" she says, pouting at me.

"You and me," I say, trying to sound like one of those sexy doctors.

What was I even trying to do? I mentally slapped myself for that.

She looks shocked at first, but then slowly starts smiling.

Okay, I guess it wasn't that bad.

"Okay, that's fine. I wouldn't mind the surroundings because I'd have good company," she says.

"Really? Wow, that's great!" I say, trying not to sound overjoyed.

She nods her head enthusiastically, never letting that smile fade away.

"Okay, so you haven't seen the little garden at the back of this hospital. It's really gorgeous. Not as gorgeous as you, but the next gorgeous thing after you", I say before realizing that I've said it aloud.

I mentally smack myself for my stupidity.

She blushes at my words and bites her lower lip.

"Hah, it's not even five minutes since we're friends and you're already flirting," she says and giggles.

Okay, she got me.

"Why not? You're such a gorgeous girl, I wouldn't want to waste any time," I say with a smirk.

"Is that because you think I'm going to die?" she says, returning my smirk.

I'm at a loss of words because that's not what I meant to say.

"N-no, it's not that Kenna. I didn't mean it like that," I stutter.

"I was just kidding, Tyler. Chill", she says, throwing her head back in laughter and probably looking at my flushed face.

I find myself smiling as I look at her. She looks really gorgeous with that smile on her face.

I want her to always smile like this, and I'd do anything to make it happen.

I take her hand in mine, and she looks at me with her eyes wide open. There's a faint blush on her cheeks as I begin to intertwine our fingers.

Our hands look so good like this. As if they were meant to be.

I smile at this and look up to see a smiling Kenna. She probably thought the same thing.

We just sat there in comfortable silence, looking at our fingers, stealing glances at each other, and blushing like teenagers.

Our "moment" was interrupted by the appearance of Danica and Miss Joy.

Danica swung the door open, with Miss Joy closely behind her.

They stopped in mid-conversation and froze as they saw Kenna and my fingers linked together.

"Guess we're interrupting something again," Miss Joy says, smirking at Kenna.

"I guess we'll head back to the cafeteria and grab some oatmeal cookies," Danica says to Miss Joy.

Before Kenna or I could protest, they were off.

So, it was just the two of us again. But I wasn't disappointed.

And neither was Kenna. I could tell by the blush on her face.

"So it's just the two of us until they're back," she says, looking at our tangled fingers.

"Yes, I'm glad about that," I say, passing her a wink.

"Me too," she says, looking into my eyes.

.

.

The time spent with Kenna passed so quickly that I hadn't realized it was half past ten p.m.

I'd spent almost two hours of my time with her.

And then it suddenly struck me.

I want to spend all my hours with her.

Kenna and I talked about her life. She told me about the devastating death of her parents when she was five years old, how Miss Joy's boyfriend, Jed, didn't want Kenna to be a part of their life together, how she and Ally were best friends since the second grade, how much she loves reading, and about her college and part-time shift at Starbucks.

I wasn't bored when she spoke. I was interested in every little detail connected to her. I listened with interest as she told me about everything.

"So, what's your story, Mr. Hart? Oops, I mean, Dr. Hart?" she chuckles.

My life is boring, so I decided to avoid the question.

"Well, mine is a very boring story, Kenna. So let's skip that," I say, shrugging my shoulders.

"Oh no, no, I'm not skipping anything here. I told you my stuff, so you better do the same, mister", she snaps her fingers at me. And then a second later, she adds, "I mean doctor, not mister," and laughs at her little joke.

"Okay, okay." I put my hands up, giving into her.

"Well, we just have to check you up tomorrow morning, and you're free for the entire day, and so am I. So, let's hang out in the hospital garden?" I say, wiggling my eyebrows.

"Only if you promise to tell me about your life," she says.

"Alright, I will," I sigh, at which she chuckles.

"Anyways, I hate to do this, but I need to get going. I'll see you tomorrow in the morning," I say, rising from the chair but never letting go of our entwined fingers.

"Um, alright. See you soon," she says with what seems like a sombre expression.

"Hey, look at me; you'll get to see me in less than twelve hours," I say and smirk at her.

"Okay, okay, now go," she says, rolling her eyes.

We both look at our entwined fingers and slowly, unwillingly, let go of each other's hands.

I make my way towards the exit of her room, never leaving her eyes.

When I'm at the door, I say, "Good night, Kenna. Sleep well".

"Good night, Tyler. You too," she says, flashing me her gorgeous smile.

Yes, a very good night indeed.

I make my way out of her room to see Miss Joy and Danica deep in conversation on the hospital benches down the corridor.

I make my way towards them, and they stop when they notice me.

"Why are you guys here? Why didn't you get back to Kenna's room?" I ask in confusion.

"Oh, we just wanted to let you guys talk," Miss Joy says casually.

That's really nice of her.

"Kenny doesn't have a lot of friends. So, I thought she could use someone other than me," she continues.

"Well, thank you, Miss Joy," I say.

"You're welcome, and please call me Erin," she says with a genuine smile.

"Good night, ladies," I say as I walk past them and towards my cabin to leave for the night.

"Good night," I hear them say over my shoulders.

As I walk towards my cabin, I look at my now empty hand.

It was then that I realized that I was falling for her.
