The heels from Emily's brown knee High boots clicked against the pavement as we walked hand in hand down the block that Taehyung and Jimin lived on. Since they lived in a townhome, the city street was usually full of parked cars, which meant anything close by would be taken up by the residents. With each passing light post and parked car, the delicious smell of barbecue taunted my empty stomach as we approached the building, and my anticipation was increasing.
I was alerted when she adjusted her hand in my grip. Turning my attention to her, I slowed down my pacing and eyed her with attentiveness as she fixed her crème colored flannel.
"Feeling nervous again?"
Nibbling on her bottom lip, she confirmed my speculation, her damp curls that hung on the side of her ears bouncing as she nodded her head. "Mhm."
"Aw," Pausing us at the top of the front steps before knocking on the door, I guided her hand to my lips for comfort. "You'll be fine."
"I know." She sighed, psyching herself up. "Imma be cool."
I waited a few more moments, double checking her comfort levels. My eyes flitted between hers, noticing the lingering anxiety hidden in them.
"Em, look," I start, holding her hand firmly to my chest. "I got you, ok? If at any point your nerves seem to get the best of you and this is unbearable, or if you genuinely can't stand them, I'll get you out of here. No questions asked. Don't think you need to stay because these are my people."
Standing underneath the porch light that shined on our faces, I awaited her response. When she opened her mouth to speak, a blue light flashes in the corner of my eye followed by a chime, and a radio version of taehyung's voice came through.
"You guys coming in or what?" He asked. I rolled my eyes dramatically, dropping Emily's hand, but not letting go of it.
"Yes, we're coming in! Can you stop stalking us from your doorbell please." I sneered.
"Technically you're trespassing, so I can do whatever I want." He spoke matter of factly, causing Emily to giggle and him to shift, bringing his attention to her. "Wait a minute! Hold on."
The blue light Stopped abruptly and loud shuffling was heard from the other side of the door. Emily and I exchanged looks of confusion and annoyance. He was already doing the most and when I was already trying to ease Emily's mind.
The front door swung open and before stood Kim Taehyung wearing a red apron with a cartoon version of womens breasts on the front where they usually are. His smile was supposed to be something flirtatious but who could take him seriously in this getup?
"He can't be serious right now," I said, trying not to burst into laughter.
"Hey there, gorgeous." His suave tone was enough to make Emily go wide eyed and a small blush to form on her cheeks. He was irritating yet so humorous that I almost couldn't bear it any longer.
"Hey," she waved meekly with her other hand, flashing him a friendly smile "Nice to meet you."
"Em, this is Taehyung. Tae, this is my Girl, Emily."
"Nice to meet you too, Emily." He stuck his hand out confidently, allowing Emily to place her smaller hand in his for a respectful shake without being overly firm. His smile was welcoming and obviously mischievous, and poor Emily was about to fall victim to his games. Before I could even lead Emily in the house, he was doing it for me. He pulled her from my grasp in a flash, so quickly the hair in her high ponytail whipped past me when she shot me a surprised look before he ushered her inside. I had no choice but to follow behind.
"Look who I found outside!" Tae spoke excitedly, holding Emily by her shoulders as she laughed along. "This is Emily."
"Tae let the poor girl go."
"What? I'm not doing anything." He argued. "She's Fine. Am I hurting you?""
"No, you're fine." Emily giggled.
"See." his smile never faltered.
"Leave her alone." The third voice snapped, "Go help Jimin with the meat or something."
I Let the door click behind me as I listened to the familiar voice coming from the living room. The lighthearted sound brought a feeling of nostalgia and a smile to my face. As I walked deeper into their home, I saw Ju-ri greeting Emily with the brightest smile and pulling her in for what I imagined to be a warming hug. "Hello, sweetheart."
"Hello." Emily greeted with gentleness, returning the same hug as if they already knew each other for years.
Pulling away, Ju-ri kept her at arms length to take in the sight of her from top to bottom. "Well look at you! Aren't you pretty? What did you say your name was?"
"Thank you, uhm.. My name's Emily."
"Emily." She hummed. Eyes resembling her brother's chestnut ones beamed as Emily's name rolled off the tongue with delight.
I stood behind with my hands in my pockets watching the interaction unfold. It was pleasing to see her look so comfortable after being involuntarily thrown in the lion's den. I figured why not sit back and wait for them to notice my presence instead of interrupting their greetings.
when I shifted on my feet, Ju-ri's attention was averted. Her sunny personality brightened up the room even more when we locked eyes. Rushing over to me with her arms wide and out in front of her, her petite body crashed into mine aggressively for a tight hug.
"Jungkook-ah! Happy belated birthday!" She cheered, speaking in our native language. "you've grown so much!"
"Thank you, Noona." I blushed, briefly locking eyes with Emily who stood a few feet away holding the sweetest smile. "I see you've met Emily already."
"Yes! I had to introduce myself since you let taetae nab her from you."
Reaching a hand up, I rubbed the back of my neck sheepishly. "Yeah, he stole my girl. I guess he was over excited to meet her."
"I was as well when you said you both were coming."
"I see. Where's everyone else?"
"They're out back. Oh my god," She gasped, "I'm being so rude! Come on, I want you guys to meet Sahara."
Quickly grabbing both mine and Emily's hand, she skipped to the back patio with us in tow. Her eagerness was charming and has always been. Although her appearance has changed slightly her personality has remained consistent. The last time we saw each other, her hair was at its usual length that fell down to her back, but this time it was cut into a shorter style that stopped at her shoulders. The black turtle neck she wore covered her arms and neck, but it didn't stop me from noticing the lighter complexion on her hand that held Emily's.
"There they are!" She expressed, letting go of my hand to slide the door open. "Look who's here!"
Emily and I smiled shyly, standing on both sides of her like two toddlers holding their mother's hand. Our eyes locked on the other six pairs that stared back at us, and like always, jimin is one of the first to stir things up.
"Y'all finally came." Jimin, seated near the smoking grill raised from the patio chair with eyes shaped as creasants as we walked over to me with fake ass enthusiasm. "Took you 2 hours."
"And yet the food still isn't done." My sarcasm sent him into a fit of laughter as we dapped each other up.
Ju-ri, on the other hand, left us to tend the grill with her brother, leaving the three of us to converse. Stepping back to eye both Emily and I, Jimin placed his hands on his waist when his attention turned to emily. "Well Hello! We've been waiting to meet you."
Pulling Emily closer by her waist, I let the hand rest on the peak of her hip. "This is Emily. Baby, I don't know if you remember but this is—"
"They call you J. Park too, right?" she flashed a coy smile, holding her hand out in front of her for a shake.
Stunned and obviously amused, Jimin stood there with his mouth agape and bit back his laughter. A smirk spread on Emily's face and I began to snicker as the core memory started to resurface.
"Girl. get over here." Finally letting his laughter spill from him, Jimin grabbed Emily's hand firmly and pulled her in for a big hug. "You got jokes, I see."
"Nah, I saw you had a new album coming out right?"
He pulled away and guffawed, defeated by Emily's witty greeting. I couldn't help but double over myself and cackle because so far Emily wasn't letting up.
" Alexis sent me the link to your Mixtape just yesterday. Dope Track list by the way."
"Damn. I see why you and Alexis are girls."
Our collective laughter must have gathered the rest of everyone's attention because when it started to subside, Taehyung was already skipping over to us wondering if the rest of them could get in on the joke. "What's so funny?"
"We wanna laugh too," Ju-ri whined, taking a seat next to sahara who I have yet to introduce Emily to.
"It's a little inside joke, Noona." Jimin said, turning tae around and guiding him back over to where he came from.
"Aw." She pouted.
"You had to be there." he shrugged, taking a swig of his beer.
"Well Shit. My fomo is kicking my ass even more now."
I exhaled a chuckle, amused by the comment that came from the last person to be introduced. Sahara sat comfortably in her seat, faking a sullen expression that nearly complemented her round Topaz eyes no more than they complimented her earth toned complexion.
"Anywho. You guys gonna just stand there all day?" She piqued. "Come sit. Have a drink or two."
Instantly, her sullen face transformed into a bright eyed grin as she waved for us to come over. Making room for Emily to lead the way, she held my hand as we both walked over to the table to accompany everyone else.
"Sah, this is Tae-tae's younger friend. I used to babysit him as well. He's the baby." Ju-ri's cheerful voice breaking the momentary silence.
"Hey wassup, im jungkook," I greeted, reaching out to give her a respectful handshake. She placed her in mine, returning the same quick gesture. Retracting my hand, I wrapped the same one around her slim. "And this is my girl, Emily."
greeting her with her signature sweet smile, Emily gave her a less firm hand shake fit for her hands. "Hello."
Sahara chuckled, finding humor in her friend's eagerness that hovered over her shoulder. " It's nice to meet you both. Don't mind Ju-ri, she's a nut."
"Oh I know."
"It's nice to meet you as well." Emily expressed, "You probably hear this all the time, but your eyes are so pretty."
Raising her brows, Sahara waved off Emily's endearment and exchanged some of her own. "Oh please, girl, your eyes are the prettiest shade of brown I've ever seen."
"aren't they?" Ju-ri agreed. "Gorgeous."
Emily smiled shyly, not expecting them to return any further compliments, especially on something that she expressed not to find a big deal. "Thank you both"
"Thank you. I would've gotten up earlier to greet you, but I saw you both were preoccupied by that knucklehead over there."
"It's all good." I chimed back in, "you were sitting over here comfortably, no need to get up when we came right over."
"You're not wrong, I was comfortable." She joked. "I guess a greeting is a greeting in this case."
"Of course." I chuckled.
"Noona, We're going to finish getting the rest of the food together so in like 10 minutes or so everything will be done." Taehyung said, holding a tray of meat with Jimin in tow.
"Okay. Don't fuck it up." She responded casually. Getting comfortable in a chair next to Sahara, Ju-ri placed both her elbows on the table and leaned forward "So. how's everything going, how's life treating you?"
"Things are.. going. Life's pretty much still as shitty as it's always been, but you know," I shrugged, taking a break to look at Emily who was waiting for me to continue as if I was going to disregard her. "I have someone with me who helps me forget."
"How sweet." Sahara cooed.
Looking away, Emily rolled her lips into her mouth, attempting to hide her blush while internally subjecting myself to internal irony.
As if I could forget how shitty life is. Tch.
"I'm glad she's making you happy. You both look happy; look at those smiles." Ju-Ri switched back to her native Tongue.
I chuckled again, also taking note of the smile that spread on Emily's face after she spoke. It didn't seem like one of confusion but of confirmation.
"Oh! Emily, hon, I'm sorry it's a habit. Let me know if it makes you uncomfortable."
"no, you're fine." Emily protested, dismissing her worries. "I.. um, I understand and speak a little as well."
"Really?" Ju-ri and I said in unison.
I thought about it earlier in our relationship when she talked about making a Korean dish with nearly perfect pronunciation and when I saw the picture of her parents, but I didn't think much more of it. Now that I think of it, I don't know why it never dawned on me.
"Yes." She answered, shying away from the attention that was now on her.
"Oh, did you study the language? I did a little in college." Sahara asked, taking a sip of her drink after.
"Um..n-no, uh My dad is from Korea." Her eyes strayed away from theirs and the hand that rested in her lap played with the small piece of thread stuck out of the hem of her shirt.
"Love that! and your mother? Did they meet here in Seattle? Wait, Is she even from here or from someone else?"
"S-she's from here." She nodded.
"Is she African American? I don't want to assume anything."
"Damn, Ri. Relax." Sahara spit playfully.
"Oh you're right, I'm sorry Emily. Sometimes I can ramble. Probably thought you were in a damn interrogation, huh." She laughed.
"No, it's ok.." Emily laughed shortly. "Uh Yes we're black."
As Ju-ri's interest in her life story increased, more questions kept flying at her. She kept her expression together, but from the way she fidgeted with the small piece of string, I saw through her act. She was nervous and sharing information on her life wasn't making it better.
"I bet she is stunning." Ju-ri beamed.
"She is." Emily nodded, chewing on the skin of her bottom lip. Moving the hand that laid on her waist, I gave her hip a reassuring rub. I had to redirect the conversation. I've seen this before and I didn't want her anxiety to kick in.
"What about you, Noona? Sahara? Are you guys doing alright these days?" I asked, reaching for the cold beer that Jimin set on the table for me a while back.
"Oh!" Ju-ri shouted out of excitement, alarming us including sahara, "you guys have no idea!"
"Ju-ri, relax." Sahara exhaled a chuckle, her calming voice contrasting hers.
"We just came back from our trip to Alaska! Oh my god, you guys would've loved it! It was beautiful!"
"I heard." As Noona went on about how she and Sahara spent what almost sounded like a honeymoon in Alaska, they were so lost in the world getting the order of events right that they barely noticed Emily and I in our own.
"No, that was afterwards!"
"Ri, we did that before we went to the reserve."
"Hey." I said quietly, getting her attention. Sliding my hand down her skin starting at the wrist, I interlock my fingers with hers holding it close to her body under the table.
Her earrings and the curls that hung by her ears whipped when she turned her head in my direction to be met with a quick peck on her plump bottom lip. Her eyes met mine as she blinked away the surprise. Our faces remained close together as our eyes spoke before we did.
"What was that for?" She whispered,
"I got you, baby."
As if I could visibly see the anxiety flush from her system, My other hand cupped her from underneath, sandwiching it in my grasp, and locking her body in my subtle embrace. Everything surrounding us no longer mattered in the moment. I watched as closely as she closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, then exhaled softly, ridding herself of any more uneasiness she felt in the moment.
"You good?"
"Yes."
"Good."
"you guys can come eat."
Taehyung's voice caught our attention from the sliding door, and we all looked up like meerkats.
"Can you wait a second? We were telling them about our trip." Ju-ri whined.
"You can't do that inside?" He twisted his face up. "This food needs to be ate and you talk too damn much anyway."
"Yahhh! Don't rush me! Don't make me beat your ass. We'll come inside when we're ready!" Her eyes attempted to pierce through him as she scolded him, but he was unfazed.
"Nobody cares, Ju-ri." Turning his attention to the rest of us, he nudged his chin in our direction. "What about y'all? You guys coming or what?"
"Yeah." I answered for us. "We'll be in there."
"Bet." He closed the door behind him, letting it slam.
"Come one, baby." Emily and I stood up from our seats, gathering our things to head inside.
"Wait, We didn't finish telling you guys."Ju-ri pouted.
Stopping us in our tracks, I gave her an apologetic look "Sorry noona, but I'm hungry and it's getting cold out here."
"Yeah it's getting chilly. Can you tell us inside?" Emily asked with sympathy as we walked past her. "I'd still like to listen."
"Ri, let's go." Sahara said, leaving Ju-ri where she stood. "I'm hungry too."
*~⏰~*
After a little while and a drink or two, we all occupied the living area with full stomachs and chill vibes. Various conversations sparked among us, ranging from sports and entertainment to other trivial things which led to the current debate between Tipsy Tae and Jimin.
"What? You trippin if you really think Popeyes Chicken Sandwich is shitting on chick-fil-a."
From the armrest of the couch, Tae sat with rosy cheeks and a luminescent glow on his face, holding a bottle of corona in his hand as he pointed at jimin.
From the other side of the room, Jimin seated himself on the second couch one cushion over from Emily and so. He nodded his head nonchalantly, listening to what tae said before guiding the bottle to his lips and taking a swig.
"First of all. How's there even competition between the two? Chick-fil-a ain't even on Popeye's level. That shit is bland, with them skinny ass chicken cutlets they put on there." He ranted.
"Man, Popeye's chicken sandwich ain't shit without the spicy sauce. And on top of that, it's still mid. And don't even get me started on the one that's not spicy." Taehyung shot back.
We all laughed at the amount of passion they had for defending their choices of chicken sandwiches. I don't even remember how we got this far, but It was amusing nonetheless.
Frowning his face up, Jimin leaned away "Coming from the dude that eats chicken sandwiches that were marinated in pickle juice," he cringed.
"Pickle juice??" Sahara asked, just as alarmed.
"The pickle juice is what makes it zesty! Fuck you mean?!" Taehyung threw his arms out in front of him, amplifying his voice.
"It's pickle juice. If I wanted to eat that, I would go in the fridge and get a damn pickle!" Jimin snapped.
"And if I want some soggy bread, I'll go to Popeye's! They take so damn long, by the time I get my shit, the bag all sweaty! Meanwhile, anytime I go to Chick-fil-a, it's so fresh it's burning my fingers, and it's fast." Tae said matter of factly, taking another long sip of his beer.
"They are fast." I chimed in, causing Jimin to pause and shoot me a stank look.
"That's cuz it only take 2 minutes to fry a thin cut chicken breast!" He scoffed.
From the kitchen, ju-ri snickered, finding just as much humor in this conversation as the rest of us did. She knew it was going left from the moment it started so she took that as her chance to get up and get some more refreshments for the show.
"Oh god. You're two are idiots!" Ju-ri walked into the living room with a new bowl of lays, placing them on the coffee table before Emily and I with her back facing them "Is it that serious?"
"It can't be." Emily shook with laughter, nuzzling more into my embrace with my arm draped around her shoulder. When it subsided momentarily, she spoke again "is this all the time?"
"Yes." I answered.
"Sadly." Ju-ri sighed, sitting in her spot on the couch between Tae and Sahara.
"Nah noona, you know them breasts be thick." Tae said, idly snapping his fingers in the direction of the chips asking for somebody to hand him some while his head was turned to his older sister.
Granting his request, Jimin grabbed a few chips from the bowl and placed them in Taehyung's outstretched hand. "Man, them shits are sliced on one of them deli slicers in the market."
"Thanks." Tossing the chips in his mouth with a crunch and finishing his thought mid chew "And the only reason Popeye's are so thick is because they coat it in 3 inches of breading!"
Jimin was rendered speechless, staring at him wide eyed and mouth agape searching for his next move in this impossible debate. Emily, Sahara and Ju-ri were all nearly doubled over in laughter to the point where one of them was gasping. Using this as my opportunity, I made a point to add my own input.
"You know what? I like me a good McChicken every now and again."
Simultaneously, everyone turned in my direction with twisted faces shooting daggers daggers in my direction that if they were real they would completely miss Emily and aim straight for me like a missle.
Both Tae and Jimin tossed their arms in the air expressing their disappointment, causing the women in the room to laugh even harder than before.
"Here we go! Here we go with the bullshit!"
"Come the fuck on with the McShitken!"
"What?" I shrugged. "They straight."
"ThEy StRaiGhT? That's it?! They just straight? Not good, not fire, just straight." Tae asked with squinted eyes, his speech slurring slightly from the amount of drinks he had.
"Tell me you gave up without telling me you gave up." Jimin pinched the bridge of his nose.
"I mean, you know... they'll get you through." I shrugged again.
"It's not even chicken!"
"That shit taste like it was made outta recycled cardboard."
"I'll rather you eat a chicken sandwich from Wendy's before you eat THAT shit."
Again, their collective yelling made me cackle, not taking them seriously at all. The debate between them turned into an attack against me, and I didn't care at all. This was nothing new.
"You're a fucking menace. Weak ass chicken sandwich. Emily, your boyfriends a menace." Taehyung muttered one last time, his eyes low as he tilted his head back to finish off his bottle.
Across from me, Ju-ri rolled her eyes and emerged from the couch up, snatching the drink from his hands and quieting the room taking control of the conversation. "That's enough from you."
Standing in the dead center, she held her hands together in a clasp by her heart.
"Alright guys! As annoying yet amusing as that was. Sahara and I have been waiting for the right moment to tell you guys something."
"What is it noona?" Jimin nudged his chin as huh, sticking his hand in the chip bowl. "You going on another trip or something ?"
"No Jimin!" She clapped back. "Shush. We're getting—"
"You pregnant?" Taehyung interrupted, holding a fickle smirk.
"NO!! Anyway, like I was saying. Sahara and I are—"
Frozen just as she was about to finish her statement, an obnoxious sound that I've grown to hate buzzed on my side loudly stealing everyone's attention.
Shooting noona an apology, I iImmediately started fishing for the device, patting all over my body as it rang until Emily reached it before I did and handed it to me with a puzzled expression. "It's right here, babe."
"Thanks." I said, chuckling nervously.
Shit. Why is he calling me right now though?
*declined*
Stuffing my phone back in my pocket, feeling bad for being the third person to interrupt her "Sorry noona. You were saying?"
"Like I was say-ing!" She popped the g, "Sahara and I are getting married."
"What..."
"Yah, we're engaged." She grinned, the hand decorated with a shimmering silver ring reaching for Sahara's hand that displayed a gold band around her ring finger.
"Congratulations!" Emily sang, leaving forward with the brightest smile as the three of us remained dumbstruck.
Now standing besides her, Sahara held Ju-ri's hand, interlocking their fingers, emitting a warm-hearted aura as they exchanged an affectionate gaze. Ju-ri seemed to grow nervous when her brother's reaction didn't falter. He seemed to be having trouble deciding whether to make this a negative or positive and because they come from a close-nit family, it had to be affecting her.
"Thank you, Emily." Sahara
Blinking rapidly, Taehyung searched for the words he wanted to say. "So wait.. you guys are lesbian?" The confusion evident in his tone.
"Kinda..?" She giggled unsurly.
"Kinda?" He sneered, sitting up completely and eyes wide open.
"Yes, kinda."
"Damn, I ain't even know you swing that way, noona." Jimin voiced his opinion.
"I thought you were into men. So all this time you've been having eyes for girls?" He requested an answer from her, tilting his head slightly.
"I AM into men."
He raised a brow. "So you're Bisexual?"
"....kinda..?"
"That doesn't even make sense!" He spat.
"It doesn't have to make sense, sometimes it just is. Not everything will make sense."
"Oh so you're a philosopher now, right?" He chuckled mirthlessly, shaking his head as he stood up to walk off. "something else I didn't know about my sister."
"Taehyung, you're being rude."
Stopping in his tracks, he cocked his neck back not taking her observation lightly. Turning on his heels, he marched back into the living room "Am I being rude? I'm sorry, but you're the one who isn't sure of herself. You sound confused."
"Bro, chill." I advised, trying to mediate the situation.
"What?" offended by his comment, she dropped Sahara's hand in disbelief.
Meanwhile, Emily and Jimin watched them cautiously, spectating the increasingly heated sibling encounter while Jimin munched on the chips Obnoxiously. Sahara was just as apprehensive, standing next to her lover as she watched them go against a bull with horns.
"I am sure of myself." Her voice is small at the moment and the hurt was written across her face.
"Be so fucking for real right now, Ju-ri."
"I am!" She pleaded, hoping for him to understand.
"I find that hard to believe."
"Oh yea? And since when did you become so fucking conservative? Quite hypocritical considering you live with another man." She shot, placing both hands on her hips.
"Wait woah. Wait a damn minute. I object." Jimin paused his eating.
"It's not conservative; it's a concern, So Don't try to flip this on me like Jimin and I out here fucking on each other and shit."
"I'm not saying you are! But let's not act appa didn't think this was weird."
"This is different from that. You're actually romantically involved with each other. Ju-ri, What are you going to tell appa, huh? What is he gonna say? You think he'd be with it? His only daughter marrying another woman?" He badgered her. To anyone else it would have seemed as if he was now the older sibling by the way he came at and belittled her.
"That doesn't matter!" She Growled. Tears pricked her eyes and Her volume increased as she switched languages yet again, "This isn't about appa! This is about me and Sahara."
"How doesn't it matter? You're planning on marrying woman and you don't even know what you identify as."
"Why do I have to identify as anything! I don't know Why are you acting like this!!"
"Because Ju-ri!" He shouted, "you just hit us all with this shocking ass announcement and just expected us to be cool with it. Let's be real, no one in this room suspected this at all and for you to just just drop the bomb on us like that without any consideration, of course your going to get mixed reactions. I may be out of line, but I'm not entirely wrong."
"That's why I came to you guys first! Of all people I assumed that my little brothers would be cool with it."
"See. And that's the problem Ju-ri. You assumed. You're irrational and impulsive, and it almost always seems to backfire. You randomly call to tell us your going to pop up, and then drop this hard core announcement on us when we didn't even know you two were dating in the first place. Hell, I didn't even know you were going to Alaska for half a Year! I'm happy you've found love but for once can stop acting on impulse all the damn time and think about how others could be affected!
And There it was..
As they starred each other down with the most unnerving looks, neither one of them backing down, I watched the lone tear fall down Ju-ris' reddened cheek, knowing exactly what it felt like to be in her position against taehyung. There's been countless times where I've been lectured, scolded and hounded about the choices I've made and how they can affect others, but seeing it happen before me was almost as chilling as the silence that filled the room.
Taehyung may have had a few drinks tonight, but he got his point across loud and clear.
Hey Readers,
I hope you all are doing well!
Thanks for being so patient with me and my book, I greatly appreciate it!
