Chapter One

"Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start"
-The Scientist by Coldplay

Grant stared at the framed picture of himself and Candice smiling and hugging. In the picture he had his arms around her shoulders and her arms were around his waist. They were both smiling and happy.

They were always happy. They never fought. They never argued. They were always there for each other. They told jokes, went on dates, worked together on set for the Flash, talked about everything and most importantly they always had fun. But that was over now.

And he missed everything they had together.

Three months ago, everything changed. It wasn't his fault. He'd never cheat on Candace even if his life depended on it. He loved her too much to do such a thing. But no matter how much he told her that, she didn't believe him.

Grant felt a couple tears slip down his cheeks and drip onto the glass pane. He quickly wiped his eyes and set the picture frame face down inside the box. He was putting everything that reminded him of her up in the attic.

Grant closed the box and set it in the corner for later. He just stood there, staring at the box like it would somehow transform into Candace. It didn't though and he sighed sadly.

She's never coming back, he thought.

Grant was distracted from his sad, depressed demeanor by his phone vibrating in his back pocket. He reached behind him and pulled it out, his eyes skimming over the brief text message.

From Carlos: hey Grant I'm coming over to pick you up for a party.

Grant sighed and texted back a quick response.

To Carlos: Do I have to go?

Grant hoped the answer would be no but it wasn't. Carlos texted back almost instantaneously.

From Carlos: Yes. You need to stop sulking and live a little. It's been three months.

Grant bit his lip, pondering what Carlos just said. It had been three months since they broke up and he couldn't spend the rest of his life sulking over it. Candace hadn't believed him when he was telling the truth and he knew deep down she had known he was telling the truth but chose not to say it.

Grant knew he needed to move on but he really did love her. He made himself a vow. He wouldn't date anyone until he was sure she wasn't coming back.

To Carlos: Fine. But I'm not asking anyone out.

From Carlos: Who said anything about asking anyone out? ;)

Grant smiled at Carlos' humor. No one could argue with it even if they wanted to. Grant placed his phone in his back pocket and stepped outside his flat, locking the door behind him.

Grant stood outside waiting for Carlos for about eight minutes before he pulled up beside him in his fashionable red Toyota Ford. Grant got in and Carlos peeled off.

"Grant this party is for you to relax and not be so...depressed." Carlos told him.

"I know. I'm perfectly fine Carlos." Grant said. Carlos arched an eyebrow and looked at him skeptically. "Really, I am!"

"Okay. Just checking."

Grant shook his head but he was laughing lightly. He stared out the window and watched as the roadside went by in a blur. The passing blur of the roadside could be used to describe his relationship with Candace and his life...it all passed by in a blur.

Everything he saw reminded him of Candace.

Why can't I just forget about her already? Oh that's right. I work with her.

Grant spaced out and before he knew it they were at the nightclub. He and Carlos got out of the car and made their way to the front door where they were let in almost immediately.

Grant looked around the nightclub. Music was blasting through the loud speakers and people were dancing on the dance floor like the world was ending. It was dark except for the party lights and Grant admired all of them. The spiraling pink and blue lights, the flashing white light, the glowing UV lights and the color pattern of blue, red, purple, green, pink, orange and white lights lighting up the dance floor. There was fog rolling along the floor and it was really loud.

The bar was even better.

"I'm gonna go grab some drinks!" Carlos yelled over the loud music.

Grant nodded and followed Carlos over to the bar, where they sat on some barstools. Carlos ordered some shots of vodka and Grant gulped it all down. He needed a distraction. He needed to stop thinking about her.

Grant went through half as many drinks as he and Carlos usually did and by the time Carlos said it was time for him to stop, he was super drunk. Stumbling onto the dance floor Grant got lost in sweat and bodies grinding against each other.

He felt someone wrap their hand around  his forearm before he was dragged off the dance floor and outside. Looking up Grant saw that it was Carlos and he wasn't being kidnapped. Grant's sight blurred and he tripped over his own feet trying to get him to the car.

"Come on. In you go!" Carlos struggled to say as he shoved Grant into the passenger seat of the car. Carlos made it round to his side of the car and got in. He started the car and Grant groaned.

As Carlos was driving he said, "When I said live a little I didn't mean get hammered!"

"I had to stop thinking about her." Grant groaned from the passenger seat. His words were slurred which indicates he was still very much drunk but could still comprehend.

"So you decided to do so by getting completely hammered?" Carlos demanded.

"Well you're the one who brought me out here." Grant shot back.

Carlos hesitated and stammered. "W-well I-I uh..."

Grant smirked and though he was still drunk, he noticed that another car from the left lane was in the wrong lane and coming straight for them at 60 miles per hour. Grant's eyes widened.

"Carlos!" He screamed.

There was a blinding flash and everything went black.
