Chapter 9

Later that day, Jimmy and I were laying down next to each other in the damp grass of Central Park.
The sun was haltingly going down, morphing the sky to be a orange, pink, and slightly purple color.
"God, the sky is so beautiful." I said in an amazed tone. My gaze fixed on the sun that was going down one step at a time. "Sometimes I feel as if the sunset is more beautiful than society, if that makes sense."
"I see your perspective, our society can be pretty screwed up sometimes." Jimmy said almost inaudibly, shifting closer to me. "But, society doesn't matter. The world around us is just where we live, not our whole world. Screw society, it only matters the way we think, not what the whole world thinks. Each person has their own world, in which their minds function in their own way; who they fall in love with, and we make our own boundaries. But, you know, sometimes you can't control the boundaries, you know?"
I deliberately took Jimmy's hand. "You're a really smart thinker, you know. You have a wise way of thinking." I looked over at him, and smiled radiantly. "You're extraordinary."
"Right back at you, Mel. I think you have a gift; you were brought to this earth to prove to everyone what kind of skills you have. And it's not just your art skills, it's your personality. You're generous, you're artistic, you're outgoing, and I think that you are a beautiful human being."
I wiped a tear that was rolling down my cheek. Jimmy is the only thing that makes me happy. He makes me smile bigger than I've ever smiled in the past few years. I've lived in a dark position, and Jimmy was the light that was guiding me out of that position, and I couldn't ask for anything more.
"I'm falling for you, Fallon. I'm falling for you really hard." I said, then realizing that I meant it. "I never thought that there would be someone to help me get out of the hell I was living in."
"I'm always here to help whenever you need me. You don't need to keep your distance away from me anymore because you're afraid that you're gonna be a burden. I know, it's hard. A lot of people have left you because they think that you're a burden, but they're assholes. You're not a burden, you're just having a hard time right now, and nobody has given you a shoulder to cry on." Jimmy paused, and looked at me. "But I am here. You can trust me with anything. No matter what, I'm always here."
Sincereness showed in Jimmy's expression. Jimmy pulled a stray hair out of my face, and tucked it behind my ear. He perceptibly smiled, and his lips melted into mine.
After we let go, I looked into his eyes. "What did I do to deserve you?"
"What did I do to deserve you?" Jimmy said without hesitation.
After a few moments of staring into oblivion in silence, I felt a raindrop fall on the tip of my petite nose.
"I felt a raindrop, we should go." Jimmy and I got up, and drove home.
We got inside, and I glanced at the TV.
A female news reporter with ginger hair stood outside of 30 Rockefeller Plaza with a microphone up to her mouth. "We come to you live from New York City. It is currently drizzling outside, but it is expected to get worse. We are expecting a hurricane to last for two and a half days. This is a warning; please stay indoors. This storm is going to get very dangerous and fatal. Stay away from windows, and make sure you have a good supply of food and water."
"Oh shit," Jimmy said, plopping on the couch. I sat down next to him. "We're supposed to get hit hard."
"I guess so." I replied, changing the channel.

As the day went by, the rain came down harder and harder. Slight thunder sounded. The sky became grey because of the clouds. It made me drowsy, since it was so dark. It was only six o'clock.
Branches and bushes rustled in the distance, which was starting to really irk me.
Jimmy and I were watching The Breakfast Club. He had his arm around me, and I was huddled up in the crook of his arm.
A loud thunder crashed, so loud it made me think I was deaf for two split seconds.
I covered my ears, as well as Jimmy. Once it settled down, I slowly let my hands go.
"God," I said, lifting up my ears without moving anything, which is a weird talent I have. "That was loud."
"You can do that?" Jimmy said, his gaze fixed somewhere on my face.
"Do what?"
Jimmy gestured to his ears. "That thing you do with your ears."
"Oh, yeah." I did it again.
"How do you do that?" I chuckled at his amazement.
"I don't know, I just...can." I shrugged, throwing my hair over my shoulder.
Then, everything went black.
"God damn it!" I said, putting my hands to my temple. "The stupid power went out."
I speed-walked to the kitchen, and reached up to the cabinet. I grabbed two flashlights, one yellow and one blue, and closed the cabinet. I handed Jimmy the yellow one.
We turned ours on, and looked at the window. The rain was starting to look more chunky, it was most likely hailing.
"Okay, I'm gonna tell you a story." Jimmy put the light to his chin, making his face look all white, then my eyes adjusted, and I could make out his face.
"Alright, once upon a time..." Jimmy trailed off. "I met this girl. She was this type of girl that I've never seen before, but she immediately caught my attention. She had these pink and blue streaks in her hair, which I thought was very unique. She refused to turn her head, but I managed to see her face. Then, the world stopped rotating." My heart started thumping. "It was the most beautiful girl I've ever seen in my life. I knew I wanted to be this girl. Everybody always questions me..." Hotness flooded through my cheeks. "'Why do you like her? She is way out of your league!'" Jimmy said in an on-point Adam Sandler voice. I barked out laughing. "Then I say, 'I don't know. There's just something about her that attracts me.' But every single day, she's all I think about. I don't know, she may think I'm a stalker, and I'm okay with that." I giggled, and put my pointer finger in my mouth, fighting the urge to just kiss him right then. "She will never know how much I love her. Ever."
I didn't know what to say.
"Jimmy..." I murmured. "Why do you do this to me?" I stifled a laugh. "I'm surprised you haven't left me yet."
Jimmy took my hand. "I would never leave you. Stop being so insecure, it's never gonna happen, you got me?"
I hesitated, then nodded. Jimmy kissed my hand, and let go.

It was so dark out, I drifted to sleep.
I had a nightmare.

"Why did I even convince myself that I wanted to be with you?" Jimmy raised his hands to his temple. "I'm such a damn idiot!"
Tears streamed down my face. "Why? What did I do?"
"Melody, don't even start that." Jimmy's voice raised. "I don't wanna hear it anymore."
I put my hand to my forehead. "I knew this was going to happen!" I laughed in frustration. "I told you before we got together that this was going to happen, and you made the choice to sign up, Jimmy!"
Jimmy turned, and started for the door. I grabbed his wrist, but he yanked it away, twisting my wrist. It was almost like he was intentionally hurting me.
He walked out, and slammed the door behind him, making the house shake.

I woke up, heavily breathing. I felt like I was hyperventilating.
Jimmy shot up from his sleep, petrified. He looked around, and saw me. "Melody, what's going on? Are you okay?"
I breathed slowly, trying to settle my heart rate. "I'm fine, I just..." I rubbed my forehead with my hand. "I had a nightmare." I shuddered.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" Jimmy rubbed his hands on my back up and down, which was comforting.
"N-not now," I stammered. "I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For totally panicking like that. It was really uncalled for."
"Hey, you don't have to apologize." Jimmy ran his fingers through my hair.
I blushed.
It was still dark. "The powers still out, huh? Did it come on at any point?"
"Nope, it's been off the whole time. We both dozed off."
I looked over at the time. It was 8:47 p.m., so the power was off for almost three hours.
I got up, and looked through the window. The roads were flooded, thankfully not too much, but too dangerous to drive.
"Do you just want to stay here for the night?" I offered. "The roads are flooded."
"Nah, don't worry about it." Jimmy said, stretching. "I can drive."
"Uh..." I pointed at the roads. "I don't think you can drive through that, hun." I said as-a-matter-of-factly
"You sure?"
"If I wasn't sure, I wouldn't have asked."
Jimmy thought, then lifted his head up. "Okay."
"I thought so." I said with a grin. "So watcha wanna do?"
"I don't care," Jimmy said. Then, something ticked, and the lights went on.
"Yes!" Jimmy and I said in unison. We both giggled like little kids.
I couldn't be more happier.
