3. Bonding
Kong has decided to stay with Arthit and leave the Archeology camp. It's been three days since he found Arthit and brought him to Roger's house.
Today Kong was going his home, he needs to have a talk with his dad about finding Arthit and leaving the camp.
"Are you sure you'll be okay with him?"
Kong asked Roger for the fourth time.
"Yes. I think Arthit realizes I am no danger to him. You can't be here for him every second Kong"
Kong knows Roger was telling the truth, but Arthit was so needy and Kong's presence seems to comfort him. Kong felt like he was abandoning him.
"Really, Kong. We will be fine. Do what you need to do, take your time"
Roger said hugging Kong goodbye.
Kong reluctantly waved to Arthit, who was sitting happily on the couch, looking at the soft ball in his hands.
**********
"Kong! You are home ??"
" Yes Dad "
Kerkerai asked when he saw Kong entering the house with his backpack.
"I thought you still had a couple of weeks left to your archeology camp"
"I.....quit,"
Kong whispered
To his utter surprise, his dad chuckled
" Tired from forests and campings ??"
"It wasn't that, Dad,"
Kong replied
Kerkerai looked at Kong with a furrowed brows, awaiting for his next response
No point in delaying the inevitable.
Kong took a deep breath, hoping it will steady his nerves
"I found a man in a cave I was exploring. He is staying with Roger and I'm going to help, taking care of him"
Kerkerai just stared at him with confused expressions
"What do you mean by.... found a man ??"
Kerkerai asked
"I was exploring with my teammates in the forest and I climbed in to a cave and there was a man in there,"
Kong replied
"Kong, I think I'm missing something here. You say you found some strange man, and he is staying with Roger. My question is why ? Why is he staying with Roger and why are you helping ?"
Kerkerai looked completely baffled,
"He doesn't have anyone, Dad. He doesn't speak, he barely has any civilized skills...I think he is feral"
Kong told him quietly
"You should have called police, He could be dangerous."
"He isn't dangerous. He's sweet...and protective."
His dad narrowed his eyes
"What do you mean he's protective ??"
" When I found him, I called Roger on the radio. He came to the cave and Arthit tried to protect me from him.....from Roger"
"You're calling him Arthit ??"
His dad asked
"That's his name...he told me."
Kerkerai raised his eyebrows in surprise
"I thought you said he doesn't talk"
"He doesn't. I was saying names out loud for him and he reacted only to Arthit "
Kerkerai watched kong intently, deep in thought.
"So let me get this straight: you found this guy in a cave, and you plan to keep him at my best friend's house where you will take care of him ??"
"Yes dad"
Kerkerai let out a loud sigh
"You know I'm not happy about this, right ??"
"I know, but I'm twenty three Dad. It's my choice. I'm kind of hoping you will help me."
Kerkerai looked at Kong
"What kind of help ??"
" Will you ask to your police chief cousin to look through the missing persons cases and see if he can find anything that might give us a clue about Arthit ??"
Kong asked
"I don't think that's a good idea, Kong. Why don't you just take him to a hospital or something ? That will be a better place for him."
"No way. They would restrain him and study him. He would be frightened there "
Another long sigh issued from kerkerai's mouth.
"This is really important to you, isn't it?"
He asked
"Yes. I really want to help him."
"Alright, I'll see what I can do"
Kerkerai replied to Kong
"Thanks, Dad. You should come meet Arthit sometime. I think you would like him."
Kerkerai smiled stiffly, but nodded his head in agreement.
***************
After having a long shower, Kong packed a bag with few clothes and his favorite books and some other necessary things for Arthit and himself, then he climbed into his car, and headed back to Roger's house.
Growling met his ears as soon as he walked through the front door. Roger is kneeling in the middle of the living room, talking in a soothing voice while looking at the corner of the room.
"Arthit, I'm not going to hurt you."
As soon as Roger finished speaking, a colour pencil flies over the chair and lands in front of Roger
Kong can't help his laughter at the comical situation infront of him
"What's going on ??"
Kong asked, controlling his laughter
"I tried to give him a check-up...he didn't take it well"
Roger replied
Kong felt bad for leaving. The poor guy was probably frightened.
Kong approached the corner slowly, saying Arthit's name
Thankfully no more pencils flied out, and he was able to approach the chair at the corner and peeked behind the chair.
Arthit was hunched in the corner, distress clear on his face, colour pencils were clutched tightly in his hand.
"What are you doing back here?"
Kong asked
Arthit looked up at Kong from under his eyelashes, a smile crossed his face.
Kong couldn't explain why, but it gave him the best feeling to watch him smile like that, to know that he trusts him.
Kong squeezed between the wall and chair to crouch down next to Arthit
He immediately grabbed Kong's hand and, in a gesture of unexpected affection, he took the palm of his hand and begans to rub it on his cheek.
Kong's heart clenched in his chest with a feeling that's a cross between stabbing pain and glowing warmth.
Kong's conviction to help him cemented even more. No matter what it takes, he will find his family. He deserves to have a life, to have friends...to have love.
"Kong, can you try and get him to come out ?? "
"I really would like to finish his check-up,"
Roger interjected from his spot on the floor.
Reluctantly, Kong shook himself from the spell that Arthit seems to have him under.
"Yes, just give me a moment."
Kong pulled his hand from Arthit's face and keep a firm hold on his hand. He was hesitant to come out from behind the chair, but after a few minutes and some words of encouragement, Arthit finally came out.
Kong turned his attention to Roger, Arthit still gripping tightly at Kong's hand.
"So what did you find during his check-up?"
Roger stood up from the floor, picking up several discarded colour pencils
"I was able to get his measurements, five foot ten inches, a hundred and twenty pounds."
"Is that normal ??"
Kong asked
"He's on the thin side, but it's nothing regular meals won't cure. He was doing great till I tried to draw his blood. That's when he took position behind the chair and started throwing pencils. He has good aim by the way."
Roger said with an impressive grin.
Arthit was playing with Kong's fingers, poking at them with one of the pencils still clutched in his hand.
"What's the deal with the pencils ??"
Roger let out a low chuckle
"He got tired of the ball pretty fast. Then colour pencils caught his attention when I was searching something in my drawer. They made him happy, so I let him play with them."
"Do you really have to draw his blood now? Can it wait for another day?"
Roger sighed quietly
"Yeah, it can wait. I would like to talk to you about something. Do you have time?"
Arthit and Kong settled themselves on the couch, and Roger took the chair Arthit has been hidden behind.
"I would like to bring someone over to meet Arthit"
Roger said
"Who ??"
" Dr. Maria, She is a psychiatrist and specialized in post traumatic stress"
Roger informed kong
"Is that what you think is wrong with him ??"
"I honestly don't know, but something happened to him, and Dr. Maria is more qualified than either of us to help him."
"Is she nice ??"
Kong asked
"Of course she is. I know you and Arthit have some sort of bond, but I care for him, too."
Kong felt his skin burning with embarrassment. He didn't mean to imply that Roger doesn't care, he just wanted to make sure Arthit gets the help he needs.
Kong nodded
"Great! I'll go call her now and see when she is available."
Kong watched Roger walking out before turning his attention back to Arthit.
He is still running one of the pencils over Kong's knuckles, seeming quite lost in watching the pencil bounce from finger to finger.
"Do you want to watch television ??"
Kong knew he won't answer, but it felt rude not to ask.
Kong grabbed the remote and pressed the power button, bringing the television to life.
As soon as noise from the TV interrupted the silence of the living room, Arthit's head snapped up, his eyes focused on the images on the screen.
For a moment Kong was worried he may be frightened and try to hide again, but he made no sound or moved to distance himself from the source of the voices.
He sits, transfixed, staring intently at the screen.
Kong started flipping the channels, from news to sports to soap operas. Arthit has no reaction to the differing programs, he simply sat and watched.
Kong flipped the channel once more, landing on a cartoon. Before he could register what was happening, Arthit was off the couch and kneeling on the floor in front of the television, his giggles filling the room.
Kong sat cross-legged on the floor next to Arthit. He is practically vibrating with excitement as he reached for kong, squeezing his hand hard and then pointing at the television.
"Is this something you have watched before ??"
Kong's question was met with silence, but the joy shining on Arthit's face was the answer kong needed.
"He seems to be enjoying himself."
The suddenness of Roger's words startled kong
"Yeah...he is."
" Kong I need to go outside for an important meeting....can you manage with him alone ??"
Roger asked
"That's okay Roger, you can go ahead, I will take care of him don't worry "
Kong replied, he can see the curiosity in Roger's eyes and a mischievous smile on his face too
Roger left with a wave of his hand, and Kong turned to Arthit again.
"Arthit, do you want to have dinner now ??"
Kong gently placed his hand on Arthit's back as he spoke to him, so as not to startle him.
He didn't react to Kong's touch or his voice, his all concentration was on the cartoon before him.
Arthit was so enthralled with the television, Kong just let him keep watching while he made dinner.
Kong picked up the remote and turned the television off. Arthit finally turned to look at him, confusion written on his face.
"Time for dinner, Arthit...let's go."
Arthit stared at him, his expression blank.
Sighing, kong gestured toward his mouth.
"Food. Let's eat."
Still nothing.
Kong extend his hand to Arthit. He took it eagerly and, again, Kong was amazed by how comfortable Arthit was with him.
Arthit was quite as kong got him settled in his chair at the table.
Tonight's endeavor will be to teach Arthit how to use a spoon and fork.
Kong held a fork out to him.
Arthit looked back and forth between Kong and the utensil, his confusion evident.
Kong forced the fork into his hand and grabbed one of his own. Kong waved his fork in front of Arthit's face to get his attention . Once he had it, he demonstrated how to stab the noodle and pop it into his mouth.
A smile crosses Arthit's lips as he gleefully begans poking at his food.
He successfully gets his dinner scooped into his mouth, stopping to giggle between bites.
After an entertaining meal in which more food ends up on Arthit's clothes than in his mouth, Kong walked Arthit over to the sink in bathroom to have him clean himself. He wasn't much help with the actual cleaning, but he enjoyed the bubbles.
***************
Roger called and informed Kong that he will stay outside the whole night and will be back in the morning
After hanging up his phone Kong turned towards Arthit and found him sitting on the floor, pushing the softball around with a colour pencil.
"Arthit..."
Arthit turned at the sound of Kong's voice, a smile light up his eyes and Kong's heart twisted with unexpected pleasure at the sight of his beautiful dimpled smile.
Kong held his hand out to Arthit and again pleasure pulsed through him when he took it eagerly.
Now was the time to get Arthit ready for bed. Kong guided Arthit to the guest room, feeling anxious about having to get him ready for bed.
Kong got Arthit to sit down on the edge of the bed, motioning for him to raise his arms by raising his own first. Arthit mimicked Kong's movements and, with butterflies in his stomach, kong pulled his shirt over his head with ease, though he had a considerably more difficult time keeping his eyes off of Arthit's body.
Last time kong saw him without a shirt, he was dirty and scared. Sitting here now, calm and relaxed, his skin glowing, Kong's mouth felt suddenly dry.
Kong allowed his gaze to travel down Arthit's torso, over the plains of his chest, down along the contours of his stomach.
His fingers seems to have a mind of their own as they moved to lightly touch the skin of Arthit's chest, pressing over his heart.
Kong couldn't help the sigh that escaped his lips at the feel of Arthit's soft skin under his fingertips.
Kong was brought to reality when Arthit once again mimicked his movements, his hand reached out to kong, settled over his chest. Kong felt as though an electric charge was running through his body, humming and pulsing with life for just a moment.......before burning guilt sinked into Kong's heart.
It was wrong to touch Arthit like that.
Kong took a step back from him, with flushed face. Arthit's face only showing confusion, causing Kong further disgust with himself.
Pushed aside his own discomfort, Kong quickly helped Arthit into some clean sweat pants and a t-shirt, keeping his eyes on the floor.
Roger had sedated Arthit yesterday, made putting him to the bed easy. With Roger now out of the house kong has to try some other method to get Arthit to fall asleep.
Kong pulled back the blankets and motioned for Arthit to climb in. He just sat there watching kong, making no move to lie down.
Sighing loudly, Kong quickly lay down his head on the pillow and stretched his body on the bed, then hopped back up to make space for Arthit to lie down.
He stretched his hand out slowly, layed it on the pillow, pushed his palm into the softness several times. He turned his gaze to kong, flashing him a small smile before he scooted up the bed, settling his head on the pillow.
Kong helped him get his feet under the blankets and pulled the covers up to his shoulders.
"Goodnight Arthit..."
As kong turn to walk out, he felt Arthit's fingers close around his hand, a whimper coming from him.
Kong turned to look at him, distress evident on his face, his grip tightened on Kong's hand. Kong sat on the bed next to him, leaning back against the headboard. He decided to stay till Arthit fell asleep.
Arthit layed his head in Kong's lap, sighing contentedly as he does.
Again Kong was amazed by how comfortable Arthit was with him in such a short time.
Kong pushed his fingers through Arthit's hair, humming softly, his brain focused on the past three days. So much has happened... It's a bit overwhelming.
It amazes him that Arthit even survived out there alone at all, the forest and a cave was such a harsh environment to live.
Kong glanced down at Arthit's face to watch his shining hazel eyes gazing back at him. Sleep is heavy in his eyes, but they still spark, watching kong intently.
Konh couldn't help the smile that crosses his lips as they stare at each other. Something about Arthit just called out to kong and he felt the strongest need to care for him, to protect him.
Kong wished he could explain why he felt that way. It made no sense.
He find this man in a cave, he doesn't speak, he has no history that they know of yet, and Kong was completely taken by him.
He want to know everything about him, where he came from, how he came to be in that cave, how long he was there ???
Kong brushed his hand through Arthit's hair several more times, letting the silky strands slip easily between his fingers and watched as his eyelids fluttered shut.
Kong waited till his breathing was deep and even before pressing his palm to Arthit's cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin.
Kong reflected on the moment they shared earlier. His brain scolded him again that touching Arthit like that, was wrong. Clearly, his emotional age was not equivalent with his physical age.
Kong's heart, however, has different ideas... It can't help but be drawn to Arthit.
Kong slide Arthit's head gently from his lap and kneel on the floor next to his bed. He was so beautiful and peaceful as he slept.
Kong leaned forward and pressed his lips softly to his forehead.
"Goodnight Arthit"
