Huit

After a week and a half, we settled into a sort of routine. Sam and I would research nephilim lore as well as close cases, although Dean wouldn't let me come. Dean cooked and kept an eye out for any angelic or demonic activity.

Cas would come when he could, but he was apparently a general in Heaven's civil war, he could only be here for so long.

I laid in my bed, scrolling through my phone, bored out of my mind. With any luck, I'll find a case I can sneak out for.

A knock on my door frame caught my attention, it was Sam. "Hey" he greeted, leaning against the door jam.

"Hi" I locked my phone, throwing it on the bed.

"Dean and I talked to Cas, and we were thinking you should go to school, maybe get a little more social interaction than the three of us" he folded his arms across his chest casually.

Tilting my head, my eyebrows furrowed. "What about the demon hunt?"

"We've been looking but there hasn't been any sign. Now that doesn't mean the danger has passed, but you need to talk to people your own age" Sam reasoned.

"Why?"

The Winchester chuckled. "You are so much like your dad"

"Oh wow Sam, it's almost like he's my father" I shot back sarcastically. "Besides, mom always homeschooled me, I've never been to public school"

"Don't worry, Dean and I have been to a hundred different schools. We're pros, we'll teach you how to hide your weapons" he assured.

I drew my knees up against my chest, wrapping my arms around them. "I don't know Sam"

"You don't have to, but it might be a good idea" he nodded. "But if you do, you're enrolled, under the name Andy Winchester." At my raised brow he explained further. "You told us you didn't know your last name, and we're already sort of known in this town, it makes it easier to falsify guardianship."

"Alright, say I go, what's my cover?" I wondered, resting my chin on my knees.

"Dean and I have gotten around, it's possible that we could have an unknown kid. You could say that your mom died, which is true, but we were the only remaining kin, so we were tracked down." He rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassment tinting his ears.

"Is Cas not established here?" I'd rather have my own father as my guardian if I were to go to real school.

"Cas is an angel, so that's not his real body" Sam explained. "The original guy was named Jimmy Novak, but he died years ago. Technically though, Jimmy is still considered a missing persons, which would raise a lot of sticky questions"

"Which one of you is the one listed as my dad?" I raised an eyebrow when the Winchester shrugged.

"Didn't specify, Dean and I are both your guardian in the eyes of the state, so I guess you can pick"

Feeling my wings twitch, I curled them around myself. "Fine" I sighed. "But only because I somewhat agree. My only friends are above the age of thirty"

Sam laughed, nodding at me and turning to leave. "You start tomorrow, seven o'clock"

"Kay" I replied, grabbing my phone off the bed to set an alarm. Anxiety churned in my stomach, what was school even like? Was it like the movies?

Causally, I messed with one of the feathers near me, wincing as I accidentally pulled it out.

Untangling myself, I made my way to the kitchen where I could smell burgers cooking, Dean's specialty. Sam was sitting at the kitchen table with his laptop open, while Dean was standing at the stove, spatula in hand.

"Hey" I greeted lightly, looking around for the angel, who wasn't there. "Is Cas here?" He promised he'd be here this weekend, but it was Sunday evening.

"He uh, said something about an emergency in heaven" Dean answered as he flipped some patties. "Sorry kiddo"

Deflating slightly, I slumped into the stool across from Sam at the table. "You excited to go to school?" Sam looked at me over his computer screen.

I shrugged in response, picking at the table instead of making eye contact. "Don't know, would rather hunt"

"No way in He-" Dean began only to be cut off by his younger brother with a 'Dean!' "No way. I don't want to deal with an angry Cas, plus it's way to dangerous"

"Yet you guys want me to go to public school by myself" I rolled my eyes "what happens if I happen across a demon and they see my wings, they're a dead giveaway"

Sam and Dean were quiet for a moment before the younger of the two addressed me "you have wings?"

"Yeah" my wings ruffled at their words, almost puffing out even though they couldn't see them. "They're a pain in the butt to clean, but I love them"

"Maybe Cas knows how to hide them" Sam suggested. "There isn't a whole lot of lore on angel wings"

"From my understanding, angels get their wing color from their personality." I began "Cas is calm the majority of the time, so his wings are a deep shade of blue. Nephilim inherit their parent's color, but also have their own twist, my wings are midnight blue at the base and darken into black at the tips or the primary feathers."

Dean gave me a 'not bad' expression, while Sam's eyebrows furrowed in interest. "How did you learn all this stuff? Half the information you tell us isn't anything I've seen in the library."

"My mom studied lore as much as she could, but she got a lot of her info from Cas and watching me grow up. She could see my wings because she was my mom, but pretty much every angelic thing I know is from her" I explained softly.

Silence fell for a moment before Dean announced that dinner was ready, effectively driving the topic away from my mother.

Maybe he did it on purpose, maybe not, but I appreciated it none the less.
