xii. Back to "Normalcy"
Aizawa's heart sank for the extensive plane ride back to London, because he knew that a lot must've happened. He asked how long ago it was when he arrived in Recovery Girl's infirmary, but he had completely forgotten that the plane ride itself was many hours. He knew that by the time he got back, a day and a half would've already passed.
After the arrival, he got to the Walker Manor as soon as possible, only to see an unexpected sight. There [L/n] was, standing aside the Queen and seeming to explain things to her. Dozens upon dozens of men and women were being arrested and hauled off while the manor itself was taped off, most likely being searched through and examined by officials. He was completely and utterly astonished, because as far as he could tell, [L/n] seemed just fine, explaining, what he assumed to be the situation, to the Queen with a kind, knowledgeable smile on her face.
Could smiles be knowledgeable? Typically not, but [L/n] was special.
"Oh, Eraserhead!" The Queen called out, motioning for him to come over. He obliged, following up with a bow, and seeing relief flood his partners face, if only for a moment, made him feel even more relief.
"I heard what happened, and it's mighty unfortunate. I am glad to see that you are up and moving though." She spoke with gratitude and relief. "And again, thank you, thank both of you. I know it did not quite go as planned, but it all worked out in the end." And with that, the Queen did something that shocked both [L/n] and Aizawa.
She bowed.
"There's no need for that, Queen. As Heroes, it's what we do. Our job is to protect the public, no matter the cost." Aizawa spoke, the Queen standing up straight and looking at him with such a genuine smile it made [L/n]'s heart warm.
"And that is exactly why I asked the two of you, you did not do it for the publicity, you did not do it for the money, you did it for the people. And you two are great at what you do. Now, since it was undercover of course, the public will only know that it was stopped, but not by who. But believe me when I say this, I am eternally grateful for what you two have done. And we will be tracking down everyone who had their Quirk stolen to perform these Alterations."
[L/n] and Aizawa bowed, the Queen then placing a hand atop each of their heads. "Now, go home. The future generation of heroes has a lot to learn from the two of you." And just like that, the Queen had sent them off. The two went to, what was no longer exactly the Aizawa Manor, to collect what few things they had really brought with them. It was a quiet trip, but a quick one, as they were taken by car instead of carriage. Once inside however, the two finally interacted with one another.
Just a few steps into the manor, [L/n] felt fabric wrap around her torso and turn her around so that she was now facing her insomniac of a partner. "How are you?" He asked, not letting her look away.
"I'm perfectly fine Shouta." [L/n] replied with a kind, reassuring smile.
"What about your Quirk?" He inquired, knowing full and well that the second he was gone, something must've happened, as a part of the deal she made.
"They hooked me up to the glass you were forced to choose, but without you there I," she paused to take in a breath, now looking at him rather somberly. "I let all Hell break loose, Shouta. I activated my Quirk and I didn't care who or what was in my way. After what they-I- did to you, I was done." Sorry, Shouta, but what happened to my Quirk, it isn't your cross to bare.
"So your Sun, it's still as it should be?" He asked, relief immediately coursing through his veins.
"Yes, Shouta, the process started but I didn't let it finish, or even get past the first few seconds." I'm sorry, Shouta.
Then it happened, his scarfs pulled her in close and their lips connected. It was short, but it was sweet. And as his scarfs pulled away and their lips disconnected, they acted as if it hadn't happened. They went their separate ways to their rooms and collected their few belongings that they had taken with them for this trip and met back up in the main room to leave and head back home, back to Japan.
"How's your back?" [L/n] asked as they got back in the car to head to the airport.
"A lot better, still burns a bit but Recovery Girl healed it." Aizawa answered, [L/n] feeling relieved.
"I'm so sorry you had to go through that Shouta." This time, her voice was a bit more quiet and somber, despite knowing it wasn't her fault she still felt horrible.
"Don't apologize [F/n], what happened, that isn't on you." There it was, the extra tired, slightly raspy voice that [L/n] was used to. Up until now he had only had the rasp, but now he was letting the tired show through, a sign that he was finally okay.
"I have an idea for when we get back." [L/n] practically beamed, Aizawa not saying a word as they left the car, boarded the plane, and made their way back to Japan. The two didn't speak a single word to one another for the first six hours of the flight, and for the last six, they slept.
"Eraserhead, Lightbringer, welcome home!" Yamada's voice boomed as he spotted the two exit the airport. "And Eraser, you look like you finally slept for the first time in your life!"
While Aizawa's eyes narrowed, [L/n] practically choked on her own laughter.
Yamada had questions, but it wasn't his place, and he knew that. So, he was going to make sure that their return back home was a good one.
"That was a good one." [L/n] replied with a laugh, her partner rolling his eyes. Things were back to normal, and the two of them weren't on their own anymore, and everything that happened while they were gone, well, wouldn't ever be spoken of again.
"Well, now that you two have been welcomed, I have some things to do, bye-bye!" And just like that, Yamada was gone.
"So, what was that plan of yours?" Aizawa inquired as the two began to walk to his place, dragging their individual suitcases along with them.
"I need to figure out a steady living situation." [L/n] answered, Aizawa nodding.
"You say that every year, and nothing ever changes."
"Keep getting smart with me and I'm gonna move in with you." She retaliated.
Then there was silence.
"I don't hear any complaints, Eraserhead." [L/n] spoke with a bit of smirk, enjoying messing with her dear friend. After a few moments of him staying silent, [L/n] decided to take things a step further.
Grabbing him by his scarf to keep him still, she let go of her luggage and hopped up, sitting on his shoulders like a child. And yet, the man didn't say another word. Rather, he pulled along his luggage with one hand and hers with the other.
[L/n] stayed silent after that, enjoying the free ride she was getting. The two were in public, so there were looks, pictures, and whispers, but that was to be expected. Aizawa hated publicity, but the publicity he got with her, of just them being together, he didn't mind it.
Though he'd never admit to it.
The two soon arrived at Aizawa's, and instead of telling her to get down, he let go of the two suitcases and reached his arms up, gripping her waist tightly, and pulled her up, over his head, and down on the ground so that she was standing on her own.
"We'll talk about your living situation once we get settled." She merely nodded at his words as she grabbed her own luggage and the two made their way inside, Aizawa's cats immediately coming up to their owner and purring as they rubbed against his legs. The male proceeded to pet his cats, give them fresh food and water, and then put away his belongings.
[L/n] on the other hand, she sat on the mans couch and proceeded to pet the felines. She was relieved to be back, and while she was still rather uncomfortable that she had straight up lied to Aizawa about her Quirk, she didn't regret it in the slightest.
She'd just have to figure it all out, again, yet keep the Flame part a secret. Shouldn't be too hard, right?
Ha.
No.
And she knows that, which is why she had a plan. Whether it worked or not, well, she'd find out soon enough.
"[L/n] I'm gonna order some food, want anything specific?" Aizawa called out from his bedroom, gaining the woman's attention immediately.
"Surprise me!"
The rest of their day was in silence, a comfortable one though. The two spent the remainder of their evening on the couch, eating Chinese and watching whatever came on the television. It wasn't too long after that [L/n] looked to her side, only to see that Aizawa was asleep.
The [h/c] haired woman couldn't help but to smile as she stood up and then proceeded to carry her partner to his bedroom and tuck him in his bed. She would've crawled in there too, but she had something to take care of.
Plus, she wasn't quite tired.
"Goodnight Shouta." [L/n] whispered before kissing the man on his forehead like you would a child before going to bed.
She quietly left the house and practically bolted to another, but nonchalantly. Yet she didn't go the front door as most people, would, and should have.
She knocked on the window.
By now it was late at night, roughly one in the morning, but she knew this particular individual wasn't asleep, she knew that he would be awake and training.
The mans head whipped around once he heard the knocking on his window, and he was immediately ready to fight whoever it was, yet once he saw who it was, well, he was still ready to fight the individual.
Because the window she knocked on, it belonged to Enji Todoroki.
This isn't gonna be awkward at all, hah.
[L/n] was debating backing away and bolting away to Aizawa's, not that she was afraid of the older Todoroki, but the reason she was here, she wasn't even sure he'd go along with her request. That and it wasn't like they got along, not even in the slightest.
But of course, she was [F/n] [L/n], Lightbringer, so she had the kindest and brightest smile on her face.
The window slammed open, the older Todoroki's eyes glaring her down, making [L/n] feel smaller than she already was.
"Why are you knocking on my window so early in the morning, [L/n]? Doors exist for a reason." His voice was cold, which [L/n] always thought was a funny contrast to his Quirk, Hell Flame.
"Because I need your help with something, and no one can know." While the smile remained on her face, the seriousness in [L/n]'s tone of voice was severe, and Todoroki had taken note of that. Currently, the younger Todoroki's were all asleep, well, almost all. Shoto Todoroki was wide awake in his room, but with his headphones blasting, he couldn't hear anything. After the recent incident in Hosu, he was more than perfectly content busting his eardrums with music and getting lost in his thoughts.
"Go to Eraserhead then." He went to shut the window, but as [L/n]'s hand gripped his wrist tightly and he saw the gravity of the look in her eyes, he kept the window open and motioned for her to come on in, which she gladly obliged.
"I forget how beautiful your house is." [L/n] spoke genuinely, even though she was only able to view his training room at the moment, it's Japanese style was rather beautiful. "The doors are locked, right?" She inquired, the man merely nodding. His eyes were cold, his arms crossed tightly, but those same eyes also held curiosity.
"What is it you're wanting from me?" The eldest Todoroki asked, [L/n] taking in a deep breath.
"I know we don't get along, but you're the first, and only, person who can help me, and I mean that. So please, keep this between us, okay?" He knew it must've been serious because she was never one to say please, not to him at least. However, he did still entertain the idea of wanting to be partners with her due to their Quirks, so he wouldn't do anything to harm her.
"I promise." As those words left the flaming mans mouth, [L/n] did something that made him nearly choke.
At first he thought she activated her Quirk, which he was able to handle unlike everyone else, but this time, this time it was different.
Because instead of that horrifying heat and permanently blinding light, there were flames, raging flames that whipped and whirled around her body like a tornado.
The heroes arms were no longer crossed as he approached her and reached out one of his arms, putting his right arm into the raging flames, grabbing her shoulder to get a feel for just how hot they were, and they were hotter than he was expecting.
"[L/n], what happened?" As he asked that question and looked her in the eyes, he saw that her [e/c] eyes held the slightest bit of pain, not physical, but emotional.
"I can't talk about it, but Todoroki, it's not that it's a new Quirk, not entirely. I still have Sun, but I also have, well, Flame. When it originally happened, both activated at full force and it was horrifying, because I couldn't stop it. A few hours after that I managed to be able to activate them separately, as well as stop them." [L/n] paused to take in a breath, glad to finally get all of this off her chest. "I can't, and I won't, be using Flame, at least not in public. But if there's ever a time where I'm forced to, I'd at least like to be able to know how to use it." With those words, Enji Todoroki fully understood what the favor was.
And even though he didn't understand what happened to cause it, he knew that she did undercover operations, so he went against inquiring against the cause anymore. Even if they didn't get along, they were both heroes, and he still aspired for them to be partners.
"Hand over the glasses and activate both, I need to see how they work together."
"But what about the roo-"
"I don't care about the room."
[L/n] immediately handed over her sunglasses. Back in their high school days he wouldn't have needed them, while her Quirk was horrifying back then, it had grown massively in strength over the years, and he knew that. Putting on her specially made shades, she immediately activated her Sun, the Flame already activated.
He'd be lying if he said it wasn't a beautiful sight. What he now called Sunflame, it was marvelous, and would be a horrifying view to any opponent, though as she mentioned, she wouldn't be using it in the public eye. Unless necessary of course.
However, he was also doubting her assumptions as to what the Quirk was. Flames, yes, fire was obviously involved. But the way it swirled and whipped around her frame, it was different.
"How does it feel?" He inquired, his typical cold tone of voice now more curious and helpful.
"I don't know really. Sun feels the exact same, but the Flame, it's, it's hard to explain. It's like when we fought, it reminds me of that sheer burning sensation, it doesn't hurt or anything though. I can feel it though, the flames practically crawling across my skin, and the breeze from it whipping around." [L/n] explained to the best of her abilities. It was a feeling she hadn't felt since she fought him all those years ago, so in the weirdest way, it was refreshing.
"Well your flames aren't that intense, at least not as intense as my own. Your Sun lives up to your reputation, but your flames, they're weak. If you ever want to truly be able to use them in battle- and win- you'll have to make them stronger, much stronger." With that, Todoroki activated his own Quirk, and only then did [L/n] realize that his Quirk, too, had become much, much stronger over the years. While the heat of her Sun was hotter than his Hell Flame, that made sense. However, her Flames were much, much weaker than his, and she knew that now.
Now that the focus was merely on her Flame, she stopped her Sun so that she could see the true difference. And that difference was horrifying.
If they were to do a match up in just Quirk power, not including physical strength, she would be dead on the ground. "So how do I make the Flame stronger?" She inquired.
"First of all, I'm not even entirely sure that your Sunflame should really be Sunflame. I merely call it Sunflame right now because that's the amalgamation of the two. But the way your fire moves, it's different. I'm relatively convinced that it's somewhat like Shoto's, who's Half-Cold Half-Hot. If I were to guess, there's a wind element in your Flame somewhere, not one that can be used separately, but it exists so that your flames move as freely and violently as they do." [L/n] had to admit that the way he was speaking, it was very informative and knowledgeable, he wasn't the number two hero for no reason after all.
"So the Quirk I was gi- I ended up getting, it was already the amalgamation of two Quirks?" She asked, taking in another deep breath.
"I'm not completely sure, the more you advance and use it, the more I'll be able to say. But I'm roughly confident that it's the same as Shoto's, that it's a split, except it's more merged than his is." Todoroki explained further, [L/n]'s mind being beyond blown. She loved her Sun, sure, it may be hard to deal with, but it's what made her who she is. This whole situation, it made her uncomfortable. Complaining wouldn't get her anywhere though, and she knew that, so she'd learn how to use it and deal with it, and she'd learn it from Enji Todoroki.
"Try and make it hotter." His voice was commanding, no longer cold.
And so, she attempted to do as she was told, and yet nothing happened. The flames stayed the exact same they were before.
"I said to try and make it hotter, not stand there and do nothing." His voice was now more demanding. [L/n] put all her energy into the flames whipping around her body and coming from her skin, but again, nothing changed.
"Hotter damnit!" Those words and that tone sunk straight into her skin, and the flames got slightly brighter, but they were barely any hotter. It was still an improvement though, even if it was severely minor.
Shoto Todoroki heard those words and that tone, and was beyond concerned and confused. He bolted from his bed, threw off his headphones and quickly, but quietly, made his way to his father's training room. He noticed the door was locked, but there was just enough of a space between the doors for him to peek through. His eyes widened at the sight and he suddenly felt the urge to either run away or charge through the door.
His father's hands were holding Lightbringer's shoulders tightly, his body engulfed entirely in flames and the look in his eyes was both anger and disappointment. From the way it looked and the knowledge he had, it seemed that his father had used so much that even [L/n]'s body was covered in flames.
But he took notice of the difference in the way the fire moved, it wasn't too noticeable, but he knew his father's flames, just as he knew his own.
And the flames whipping around her frame, they weren't his father's, there wasn't a doubt in his mind about that.
"C'mon Lightbringer, if you ever wanna beat me you can't be weak like this!" His voice boomed and it brought up memories to the young Todoroki who felt his body unwillingly shiver. The sight he saw after that only made him shiver more violently.
Those unfamiliar flames that whipped around Lightbringer's body, that crawled across her skin, they began to rage, becoming hotter and brighter and her mouth opened, but the voice that came out was an unfamiliar one. It wasn't bright, cheerful and encouraging.
Rather it was confident, maybe even a bit cocky, and it was even somewhat vengeful. And on top of all that, her facial expression wasn't just a smile, it was a confident grin.
"Whoever said I wanted to beat you!?" Her grin was somewhat crazy, but the oldest Todoroki knew it all too well, and it was a grin he liked.
It was challenging.
The sight was chaotically beautiful, and while it confused Todoroki to many, many extremes, the collision of two different flames was elegant, in the weirdest and most horrific way.
The battle of fire soon became more as the two went at each other physically, and both knew who was stronger, but that didn't stop them. It wasn't long before [L/n]'s body was against the wall, and there wasn't a thing she could do about it. Not without her Sun, and even then she wasn't too sure.
He was keeping her body firmly against the wall with nothing but his right hand being planted firmly across the middle of her chest, his flames far overpowering hers. It has been a long time since [L/n] had felt such genuine intimidation, and it seemed Endeavor knew this.
"You partnership with Eraserhead, for all those years of being by his side, it made you forget this feeling. Because you know you could easily stomp him out, and so does he. But me," he paused, his face getting much closer to hers, his narrow eyes pouring into hers, "I could lay you out."
Shoto Todoroki's world was on a rollercoaster, and there was nothing he could do about it. He knew he shouldn't be watching and listening to them, but he couldn't get his legs to move.
"Maybe right now, but my Sun, even as you are now, your body can only handle it for so long." [L/n] retaliated, her facial expression changing to one the older Todoroki hadn't seen since their battle back in high school. Her [e/c] had narrowed, when she wasn't speaking she was biting her bottom lip, and those [e/c] eyes held a certain glint to them.
"Your Sun may be powerful, I'll give you that. Even you using it earlier, it felt as if my skin was being singed. However, your flames are weak and pitiful, and while your ability to take people down and maneuver is excellent, your average punches and kicks are not. Your Quirk has never required your physique to be that great, but the world is getting worse and villains are on the rise now more than ever." The man paused, his face getting so close to hers that his forehead was pressed against the top of hers, his body still managing to tower her.
"If you want your Flame, or whatever it may be, to be stronger and more usable in battle, we're going to have to work on your physique. And when I'm training you, don't hold either Quirk back, it's not like you're training with Eraserhead. I can handle you." Those last words made [L/n] feel some kind of way, though she wasn't entirely sure what that way was.
Yet she knew he was right, which was a fact that only now pained her.
"Now, activate your Sun." As he spoke, he used his free hand to pull down the specially made sunglasses, his other hand still keeping her pinned to the wall.
"Why?" [L/n] inquired, confused as to where this was going.
"I want to see if strengthening your Flame effects your Sun." The young Todoroki didn't have a chance to look away, to shield his eyes. So when [L/n] activated her Sun, he shut his eyes, only a little too late, and he began to tumble backwards until he hit the wall of the hallway.
[L/n] immediately stopped her Sunflame while the older Todoroki used his Hell Flame to bust the locked door open, and once the young Todoroki opened his eyes, seeing red and yellow blotches every now and then from the effects of the light, his eyes locked on his fathers and [L/n]'s, whose were also locked on his.
"Shoto/Todoroki-"
"Oh, father, Lightbringer..."
