vii. Harboring Emotions
The Sports Festival was in its very first section, the obstacle race that went around the stadium. While Aizawa was dealing with Yamada murdering his ear drums, [L/n] was standing atop the stands, watching the students as they battled and ran. Her eyes however, switched between the race and a specific Pro Hero.
Endeavor.
It wasn't that well known, though there were speculations, and even theories, as to why the two of them weren't partners. After all, Quirk wise, they were a perfect match. After their battle in the Sports Festival years ago, they were scouted by the exact same companies for that reason. They could endure one another's Quirks perfectly with no effort needed. While their Quirks could damage each other, they would have to be full blast and within close proximity for a longer period of time.
That was [L/n]'s downfall however, because their fight ended up relying on their combat. Even then, it was a drawn out battle. She was able to maneuver very easily and avoid his attacks, but couldn't hit him hard enough to do that much damage. Endeavor won, but he didn't escape that battle unscathed, because the suns heat is hotter than flames after all, so despite being the user of Hell Flame, he was burned.
As the obstacle course and eventually Calvary Battle ensued, their eyes met from across the stadium, and Todoroki who was looking up at his, who he despised to call, father, he followed his eyes and realized that Enji Todoroki just wasn't looking at [L/n], that she was looking back. The boys curiosity grew, but his focus returned to the Calvary Battle and stealing Midoriya's headband.
Aizawa noticed this, and since he wasn't really there to announce, Yamada doing all of it just fine on his own, he was looking at the way [L/n] and Enji Todoroki looked at one another. While [L/n] had a kind smile on her face, per usual, Endeavor looked like he was ready to snap, though he tended to look like that at all times. Aizawa didn't know everything about things that went on between the two of them, but he knew more than most.
As the Calvary Battle came to an end, a partial break took place while Endeavor could be seen leaving the stadium, and not too long after, [L/n] did as well. The two met within the building, their demeanors complete opposites.
"So you're using support items now." He stated, glancing at [L/n]'s new hero costume. "What happened to despising them?" The man spoke, the two of them being some of the very few Pro Heroes who didn't use many items of any kind, but now, she was no longer a part of that group.
"I can't let my personal feelings get in the way of my capability to save others." She replied with a cheerful smile and bubbly attitude. "Besides, it wasn't my idea, but I like the result."
"You haven't changed at all, have you? A Pro who's never even tried to aim for the top." Endeavor spoke rather negatively. While neither Pro Hero knew, Todoroki was just around the corner, listening.
"Being a hero isn't about being number one, at least not to me. As long as I can put a smile on someone's face and make sure they're okay, that's all that really matters." Her cheerful voice and kind smile was slowly diminishing as she realized no one else but them was around, or so she thought at least.
"Effort is wasted unless you're known, you know this [L/n]." Endeavor's irritation was beginning to grow, and oddly enough, so was the woman's standing before him.
"You're closed minded Enji, it's as simple as that. I don't like to say negative things, but you're the exception. Because keep in mind, I know what you've done. Just because you're at the top, it doesn't mean anything if people don't feel safe around you. Even your own family."
"You know nothing ab—"
"I don't wanna hear it. I was hoping you'd changed, at least a little, but I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. I see him every day, Enji, just as you do. I don't feel like doing a deep dive into this, but I swear, if you lay a hand on that child again, I'll do to you what you've done to him." [L/n] turned around to leave, but she felt a flaming hand on her shoulder, halting her from walking away.
"You couldn't defeat me in high school, and you can't now. So unless you plan on taking the offer that's stood for years, don't get in my way." Removing his hand from her shoulder and walking away, [L/n] spoke one last time before making her way to check on Aizawa and his ears.
"I'll get out of your way once you get out of his way." By the time Endeavor turned around to yell, she was gone. His eyes held nothing but anger and hatred as he returned to the stadium.
To say that Shouto Todoroki was in shock would be quite the understatement. If anyone else were to hear this and tell him, he wouldn't believe it, he barely believed it at the moment and he just witnessed it himself. To hear those kind of words and that tone of voice from Lightbringer was ground shattering enough, but the wording from his father and the way he spoke to her, it was odd, incorrect, it was different.
And to top it all off, she knows, she knows what he's done.
Before the peppermint haired male had the chance to leave and go back to the stadium, another person cued in.
"Sheesh Shouta, I go to check on you and you show up." [L/n] spoke casually, chuckling at the end.
"It may not be my business, and I didn't get to hear everything, but what's going on between you and Endeavor?" The male questioned with a slight rasp to his voice. Here Todoroki was, yet again, listening, and with nowhere to go.
"It's nothing Shouta, we just don't get along is all." She spoke reassuringly with a smile. "Come on, the final battles are about to start, let's go!"
"No."
"What do you mean no—"
"I don't like intruding much on your personal affairs, but as your partner I'd at least like to know what offer Endeavor was talking about."
Then there was silence, nothing but absolute silence. If one were to listen closely, their breaths could be heard.
"Okay but, at least promise me you won't get mad." [L/n]'s voice was a bit softer, quieter, almost as if she was feeling guilty.
"I promise." Aizawa replied in a gruff tone, though that was nothing new of course, so [L/n] knew he meant it.
"Ever since the year Endeavor and I fought in the Sports Festival and we got all those offers from the same companies, he's wanted me as his partner, in a sense. It has nothing to do with personalities, and everything to do with Quirks. I never really told him no, I just brushed it off, so when you and I became partners, even though it wasn't of our own decision, he's grown a hatred towards me." [L/n] explained, scratching the back of her neck at the end.
"You'd be at the top if you told him yes."
"And I'd despise every last second of it. As harsh as this may sound, especially coming from me, with the way he is right now, the last thing I want is the name Lightbringer tied to his." Aizawa too, was now thrown a bit off guard.
To wrap it up, she brought a bright smile to her face and patted Aizawa's head. "Besides, you're the best partner I could ask for." Aizawa did nothing but shake his head as they made their way back to the stadium.
Meanwhile, Todoroki was standing behind the wall, frozen, speechless, and all around in shock.
"Oh, Todoroki! The finals are about to start!" Uraraka chirped as she and Midoriya were making their way back. "Come on!" Shaking his head to clear it, he began to walk with the two, despite his and Midoriya's earlier conversation, and they all returned to the First Year Stage.
Maybe it was to prove a point, maybe it was to piss him off, or maybe it was just because she felt like it. But instead of standing in the stadium across from Endeavor, [L/n] stood at Aizawa's side in the announcer booth, looking down the flaming Pro Hero.
All eyes were on the fight between Midoriya and Todoroki, and for [L/n], she shed a tear when she saw the boy use his flames. Aizawa noticed this, but seeing that it was a happy tear, he just looked back at the fight and let it go. However, when the Todoroki and Bakugou fight came around, the Special Quirk Trainer looked as if she were about to scream as Bakugou was crowned number one, and did nothing but look like an insane lunatic.
She couldn't blame him though, but knowing as much as she did, understood both perspectives. There was a moment, a moment where Todoroki's eyes left his fathers and travelled to the Pro Heroes who was standing in the announcers booth, the Pro Hero who was looking right back at him.
Not too long after, [L/n] decided to go down and see if she could talk some sense into the enraged Bakugou, who absolutely refused to accept first place. Aizawa followed as well, though he wouldn't attempt to calm the child down, rather, he'd observe [L/n]'s actions.
While Aizawa tended to be a rather unbothered person, there was something he couldn't get off his mind. When [L/n] had said 'Besides, you're the best partner I could ask for.', and the rather intense negative emotions she harbored towards Endeavor. That wasn't all, and before he even realized it, there were many things on his typically unbothered mind. How he and [L/n] had begun to speak to each other much more since the beginning of the new school year, how they'd seemed to grow closer, and how much more danger they've been in.
How he's been exposed to her more serious side, and though he already knew this, just how selfless his partner was.
Aizawa was snapped from his thoughts when Endeavor took a few steps towards [L/n] and whispered something in her ear before simply leaving, Todoroki in his wake. With Bakugou still chained and locked up, [L/n] turned around and smiled at Aizawa. "It's about time for us to go, don't you think?"
"Sure—"
"Oh, and all your bandages and stuff get to be taken off today!" [L/n] cheered as the two were walking away. Truth be told, the insomniac Pro Hero had totally forgotten that today was the day he would finally be free from the restricting cloths around his body. While the two walked away and left the First Year Stage, [L/n] pulled the pole from her waist and began to walk backwards in front of Aizawa.
"I've been practicing with this a lot lately and I've learned a lot too!" With a bright smile on her face, the small pole extended in both ways, one simply being the rest of it's long handle while the other came out into a blade that, oddly enough, seemed to be in the shape of a crescent moon. "Look!"
She really is like a child. Looking up while walking forwards, he watched as the blade began to glow just as bright as her body would, but with it being much smaller, he didn't have to look too far away to not be completely blinded. "And it's just as hot too, so it's quite the formidable weapon if I do say so myself." After that, she stopped in her path and retracted the blade and rest of the handle, placing it on her waist once more and began to walk aside Aizawa.
They walked in a comfortable silence until they got to Aizawa's household and not too long after getting inside, [L/n] began to remove all of the mans bandages and two slings. Once she had removed all the bandages, the Pro Heroes eyes landed on the scar beneath Aizawa's right eye. Reaching her hand up and placing it on the mans cheek, [L/n] gently ran her thumb across the scarred flesh.
It was silent as Aizawa just stood there, hands in his pockets while the scar under his eye was being softly caressed, looking down at her he realized that her eyes were locked solely on the scar.
"It's about time yours come off too, so let's go ahead and get them off." [L/n] retracted her hand from the mans face while Aizawa began to unwrap all of her bandages, seeing the scarring left around her torso and a singular scar on her neck.
"You look worse than I do." Aizawa stated, shoving his hands back in his pockets.
"Gee thanks, I can feel the love Shouta." [L/n] replied with the softest of chuckles and most joking of smiles.
"Good." Aizawa stated before walking into his kitchen. [L/n]'s right eyebrow cocked up ever so slightly, looking in the direction of her partner with a slight grin on her face.
"Are you saying I'm supposed to feel your love, Shouta?" She asked, the teacher not saying anything as he made himself a glass of water.
"Is this your own rejection of love? Not telling me whether or not I'm supposed to feel the one and only Eraserhead's love? How cruel!" [L/n] proclaimed dramatically, her hand against her forehead as she leaned her head back, looking truly hurt. She didn't calculate her lean properly however, as she let out an, "Eek—!"
Aizawa turned slightly, planting his left foot on the floor in the direction of his companion, eyes narrowing slightly as his capture scarf flew towards [L/n] and wrapped around her torso, effectively stopping her from falling.
"You just got all your bandages removed, try not to hurt yourself this soon." As [L/n] now stood up straight, his capture scarf retracted and he poured another glass of water.
"It was like one of those romance movies scenes—, well, almost. Instead of being caught by the lead male and romance character, I was caught by his scarf." [L/n] spoke with a soft chuckle as she went into the kitchen.
"Why do you keep comparing us in romantic ways?" He asked plainly, handing her one of the glasses of water.
"It's all in good fun, and hey, lighten up a bit, go along with it! We're free of bandages, your class did fantastic in the Sports Festival today, it's been a great day Shouta!" [L/n] cheered, wrapping her arm around Aizawa's shoulders, who just stood there and dealt with it. He's been putting up with her chaotic energy for years, so this was nothing he couldn't handle. Though they had been together more lately, so it was more than he was used to.
Before either had the chance to say anything else, Aizawa's phone began to ring, and when he picked it up the first thing that was asked was, "Is Lightbringer with you?" Putting the call on speaker and walking towards the couch to sit down with their glasses of water, the two heroes heard an offer and request that was nothing that they had ever gotten before.
"Hello Eraserhead, Lightbringer, my name is Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth. My apologies for gathering your number without your permission, but I am in dire need of your assistance." [L/n]'s skin had paled beyond compare while Aizawa looked genuinely surprised.
"That's alright. What can we do for you, Your Majesty?" Aizawa asked rather politely, something that his dear partner was not used to hearing.
"This is just an offer, a request, so please, feel free to deny it if you would feel uncomfortable obliging." The woman paused, both Aizawa and [L/n] listening closely.
"I've heard that the two of you, with Eraserhead being not too well known, that as partners you aren't highly known. That you're good at lying low, and from an incident that didn't make it to tv, good at undercover work." Neither knew how the Queen knew about the Kamino incident, but they decided not to question it for the time being. "I know that this is odd, to be contacted by someone in an entirely different continent, but I'm asking for your help in an undercover mission to catch someone we haven't been able to catch for years."
"What exactly would we be doing, Your Majesty?"
