ix. Harboring Thoughts
That night when everyone left, Aizawa felt much more knowledgeable about the situation at hand, or at least the person who was most likely behind the situation at hand. He was one of the last to leave the manor itself, but he had to stand outside and wait for [L/n]. Walker had decided to escort Aizawa out, and he gladly obliged.
"It was nice to meet you, Sir Aizawa. I believe we'll make great business soon." The man spoke, the black haired male nodding in agreement. Their conversation was short lived as Walker made his way back inside, leaving Aizawa to merely wait for his partner to come on out. His mind was busy, and even slightly chaotic. Quirk Altering, the idea itself didn't surprise him, but the fact there was an entire underground operation going on where people were actually altering their Quirks, it made him feel uneasy.
After waiting for more than just a few minutes, he began to grow worried. [L/n] was still yet to come out, and after the whole scene that occurred between her and Dawson, it made Aizawa even more uneasy than he already was. Of course, he was still completely composed and held that same tired, emotionless face that he always had, so no matter who would pass by him they'd have no clue that his mind was going in far too many directions at once.
"My Lord." [L/n] spoke apologetically as she walked out of the manor and bowed. ¨Sorry to keep you waiting for so long, please forgive me." The male didn't say a word as he locked eyes with the woman, searching for some sort of fault, something that would prove to him if she had been changed, if something had happened within her mind. "No need to apologize [L/n], let's head home." With those words, the two got in their wagon of sorts and were taken home.
The ride back to the Aizawa Manor was dead quiet, Aizawa continuously glancing at partner, his temporary maid, and while it didn't seem as if anything was wrong, nothing felt right.
I don't like this.
Once the two arrived back to the Aizawa Manor, [L/n] got out first, holding the door open for Aizawa as well as closing it behind him, and the two quietly made their way into the manor. Neither had realized just how long they were gone until they truly looked up at the sky, seeing it as dark as ever, no stars seemingly visible.
No stars aside [L/n], that is. Aizawa's mind was in too many places, and his beloved partner in heroism appeared to notice that as she swiftly illuminated her body, if only for a second while she was at least a few feet away from him, becoming a star on Earth.
"Tell me, what exactly happened [L/n]?" Aizawa questioned as the two walked into the manor.
"Are you referring to what Dawson and I were talking about, My Lord?" [L/n] asked, and for some reason, her answer seemed to cause Aizawa problems. They were undercover, and they couldn't even really risk breaking character, not even at their own manor. The temptation to break character and get every answer out of her was tempting, but he couldn't, he shouldn't.
But he wanted to.
"Yes, that's what I'm referring to [L/n]." He replied calmly as they arrived in his bedroom and she began to undress him to prepare him for his bath.
"Well My Lord, we talked about how strong our bonds are to our beloved Masters." His jaw clenched, if only for a moment, because he knew that wasn't the whole truth. While Aizawa did believe that was a part of their conversation, he knew it wasn't all of it, especially for how long their talk lasted, and especially with the positioning they had been in.
The [h/c] haired woman had fully undressed him and guided him to his bath and helped him bathe, while he was perfectly capable of bathing himself on his own, this was customary, and she refused to break character, meanwhile, Aizawa was tempted to do just the opposite.
Technically, as the Master, the Lord, she would have to do anything he asked, answer any questions he had, but he didn't want to pry too much. However, he wanted to at least know if Dawson's Quirk did have an effect on his partner. At the same time, he figured he was thinking too much about all of it, she was Lightbringer, and she was most definitely capable of handling herself, he knew this.
But Lightbringer, she wasn't one to be physically affected that easily, especially undercover, and her reddened cheeks, that was an image sketched into Aizawa's brain. He knew he must've seemed somewhat dazed while she bathed him, and the fact she didn't point that out was either proof as to how strong her ability to stay undercover was, even in their own privacy, or that Dawson's Quirk had done something.
He hated that his thoughts were so deep, the last time his thoughts were so jumbled was Kamino, and that was also the last time he had seen his partners cheeks redden like that, and oh how he hoped that it wasn't for the same reason they had reddened in Kamino.
"My Lord." [L/n] spoke simply as she ran her fingers through his soapy hair, snapping the man from his jumbled thoughts. "Yes?"
"Forgive me if I am stepping out of line with this statement, but please, if you have something to say, just say it." Despite the kind smile and soft voice, he knew that there was a more demanding undertone, one that only he would notice, one that she would only allow him to notice.
"As I spoke to Sir Walker, I was informed of both his and Dawson's Quirks, I was merely concerned if Dawson had used his Quirk on you, successfully that is." Aizawa spoke honestly, keeping his character straight.
"Well My Lord, you would be correct, Dawson did attempt to use his Emotion on me." She replied as she rinsed the soap from his hair. "And before you ask, no, he did not succeed." She took in a breath. "And as much as I hate to admit this My Lord, I can't promise that he won't succeed next time."
Both were silent after that as the bath finished and she dried him off, only to put him in his nighttime clothes and eat, the two going to bed not that much later.
Aizawa's mind was still jumbled, his thoughts weighing down on his ability to sleep, while he didn't sleep much on a normal basis, he was genuinely tired but, but his thoughts refused to let him sleep. Emotion was a powerful Quirk, much more powerful than he preferred, especially seeing as the user of that Quirk was trying to use it on [L/n].
Sure, they were all on the same side so he wouldn't use it against her in a negative way, but that didn't settle his nerves. Just like how he wanted to know what was going on between her and Endeavor, he desired to know what exactly occurred between her and Dawson.
In [L/n]'s room, the woman was staring up at her ceiling and thinking about the day's events. She knew something was going on in Aizawa's mind, and she wanted to ask him so badly, and while she technically could, it wasn't her place. His blank face did a good job at hiding slight slumness, but she knew the man all too well, maybe even more than he knew.
That night, neither undercover hero slept, their minds preoccupied with both one another, and the people they had met.
At the same time back in Japan, their beloved students were at their internships, and a very unfortunate event was about to take place, and neither hero would be there to help, or even be aware of the danger and trouble that was about to take place in Hosu City. An event that would take the world by storm, where a villain would leave behind a strong legacy and horrific ideology.
Only a day had passed before the two already found themselves back at the Walker Manor, and this visit was only slightly different. This visit, they would be shown how the Quirk Alterations were done. Aizawa's mind was still in a million different places, but it had tamed down just enough for him to be composed to the point where [L/n] couldn't notice his harboring thoughts.
"[L/n], it's nice to see you again." Dawson spoke as the two became face to face, the woman nodding and smiling in response, both bowing to one another. "It's nice to see you again as well, Dawson." She replied, both Aizawa and Walker giving them the look that told them they could go off on their own once more. This time, it was for a different reason, because Dawson would be showing [L/n] how the Quirk Alterations were performed, Walker doing the same for Aizawa.
"I must admit, after a lot of thought, the idea of getting a Quirk Alteration has become much more appealing to me." [L/n] spoke honestly, Dawson smirking gently in response. "Have you thought about what kind of Quirk you'd like your Sun to be Altered with?" He asked, [L/n] pondering for a moment as the two approached one of the back walls with septic-like tanks with wires hanging from them.
"Yes, actually, though I'm open to suggestions." [L/n] replied truthfully, both halting in their tracks as they looked at one another. Dawson did nothing but raise an eyebrow, provoking [L/n] to tell him what her idea was.
"Flames." The tall man smirked as he saw the glistening look in her eyes, he could tell that she was more than just interested in getting an Alteration. Rather than just showing her how the Quirk Alterations worked, he took her to a room much farther back, and as Aizawa glanced and saw that the two disappeared into another area that he hadn't even known to exist, his worry began to exist once again.
"Ah yes, it appears that your beloved maid had gained an interest in getting a Quirk Alteration herself." Walker spoke, Aizawa barely able to contain himself from choking on nothing but air.
"Where are they now?" He inquired, sipping the drink he had just recently been given by Walker. "The room that holds all of the Quirks, the taken ones at least." At that moment, the man's face appeared sinister. The vibe he was now giving off irked Aizawa far much more than he could've expected, because this man had seemed like your normal person, up until now.
Walker was a villain, and a well hidden one at that. The kind who can hide in society, the kind to be feared the most.
And his butler, one who was just as bad, with a horrifying Quirk, had just taken his partner into a room alone, a room full of taken Quirks.
And from the sounds of it, she may be getting one of them infused with her own.
Shouta's mind is somewhere else, I'm not sure where, but regardless, this is still an undercover job. And if I have to pursue the thought of getting a Quirk Alteration to get in deeper, I will. Looking around the room, it seemed very old. The walls were cracked bricks painted an opaque white, and there were multitudes of different shaped glass objects on the walls, each filled with red.
"Sun and a flame related Quirk are quite similar, are you looking to hide that you have a Quirk Alteration or to simply strengthen your own Quirk as well as have a little something extra?" Dawson questioned, taking a step closer to the woman standing before him, the woman who didn't flinch or step back even an inch.
"My Quirk has its downfalls, just like any other, I am aiming to get rid of that downfall and get stronger." While this was the undercover maid [L/n] talking, she had to admit that she was also being more honest than she should be. Because a small part of her wished to rid herself of the quirk that her Quirk had, that her Sun was far too harmful to those around her.
Was she really considering getting a Quirk Alteration? No. But if Dawson used his Emotion on her to get her to get one, she would fall prey, he would succeed.
"Well, we hold many, many Quirks here. Fire is such a basic thing for you to think of, especially with a Quirk as magnificent as yours." He leaned down, gently pushing [L/n] back until her back hit the wall. "Don't you think that your Quirk should be Altered with another powerful Quirk, one that could do more than just amplify the one you already have?" [L/n]'s mind was beginning to cloud, just as it had hours before, but it was much stronger now.
"Yes, I agree. What are your suggestions?" She was still in control, those words were her own, her thoughts had not been swayed, but it wasn't easy. She watched as one of his hands got close and he cupped one of her cheeks, stroking her cheek softly with his thumb as he kept that hand placed on her cheek and jaw.
"Sun is simple, you can become your own sun in every sense of the term, it's a terrifying Quirk, especially in your hands. However, it must hurt your own allies, so you must be extra careful, such a shame." The man leaned forwards, the butler and maid practically nose to nose, his right hand not leaving her face, still stroking her cheek.
"There's a Quirk that sounds next to nothing like its name, Midnight. A Quirk that allows its user to reflect or distort anything they please. You could use it on others, and your own Quirk, to control where your sunlight goes, you could make it more concentrated, hotter, even brighter. Doesn't that sound like a good idea?" Dawson's last statement came out in a deep, almost teasing voice, and before the woman had even a moment to just think, his lips made contact with hers and her slightly clouded mind was now experiencing a thunderstorm.
However, this thunderstorm was being separated by the blinding sunlight, the sunlight that was fighting to come through. [L/n]'s mind was retaliating as much as it could, but she couldn't do too much or her cover would be blown. Dawson knew how strong her mind was, he knew how hard it would be to use his Emotion on her, causing him to resort to being physical.
He pressed his lips against hers even harder, using his other hand to grab her waist. What he was doing wasn't really a kiss, but it also wasn't not a kiss. The thunderstorm came crashing in and the sunlight could no longer be seen as her mind was now roaring with thunder.
His Emotion had succeeded, and he pulled away, but not far enough that he wasn't still towering her with one hand still on her waist and the other her cheek. Both were now breathing somewhat heavily as [L/n] looked up into his eyes and gave the slightest of smirks. "Yes, I do believe that would be a good idea."
Just as he thought he had succeeded, her lip twitched, her thoughts were already swapping back to the way they were just a minute ago. "Damn you're strong." He smirked, "I've never met anyone with as strong of a mindset as you." As his lips connected with hers once again, the thunderstorm in her mind came crashing in once again, though that wasn't the only thing that came in.
"Ah, [L/n], Dawson, I see that you're having a moment." Walker spoke as his eyes landed on the two, Dawson pulling away as both the maid and butler looked at their respective Masters. "Have you succeeded in attempting to use your Quirk on Sir Aizawa's beloved maid?" He inquired, Aizawa standing aside him in total silence, his eyes slightly narrowed as he understood what had happened.
He and [L/n] had locked eyes, neither looking away from one another. For the first time in a while, they had a conversation with their eyes, one that Walker and Dawson could never even imagine to comprehend, nor understand. One thing was clear, while the butler may have temporarily succeeded, [L/n]'s mind was still in the right place, because in the end her emotions were stronger than his Emotion.
"So, you're considering the idea of a Quirk Alteration?" Aizawa questioned, his maid nodding. "I am entertaining the idea of it, My Lord." She answered simply, the black haired male nodding.
"I see that you had troubles using your Quirk on her again, Dawson." Walker spoke, though it wasn't as if he was upset about his butlers inability to fully persuade [L/n] with his Quirk, rather, he was intrigued.
"Sir Aizawa, would you mind if Dawson tried to use his Emotion on you? Seeing as your maid is strong enough to fend it off, I am assuming you may be as well."
Aizawa and [L/n] looked at one another once again, and while there was the slightest amount of hesitation whether it was a good idea or not, Aizawa may be the tougher of the two to crack, and they both knew that.
"Of course, I see no harm in doing so." Aizawa replied simply, neither Dawson nor Walker able to read how he really felt about the situation, which only made the pair that much more interested in how it would go. The only downfall was that Aizawa's thoughts were still heavy, and seeing the scene that [L/n] and Dawson were in just minutes ago was not helping his case.
"Would it also be alright with you if your beloved maiden and I had a few words?" Walker questioned, Aizawa merely nodding in response. As Dawson and Aizawa began to speak, the former beginning to use his Quirk on the latter, [L/n] and Walker made their way elsewhere in the darkened room, over to another wall, that like the rest of the room, had glass objects on the walls filled with red.
"Midnight, a Quirk that would allow you to distort or reflect other things, but most importantly, your own Quirk." Walker began, taking one of the glasses off of the wall. "You see, a part of this whole Quirk Alteration operation is also experimenting, seeing what Quirks can really work together as one. Typically, like Quirks are Altered together, like my two bend-like Quirks, or those that are polar opposites, like fire and ice." The man paused, locking eyes with the woman before him.
"Sun and Midnight, while the names appear to be opposites, the Quirks themselves are entirely different, not similar but not opposites, just different. What I am getting at is that I'd like for you to get a Quirk Alteration, to see what the effects of dissimilar Quirks within the same body, unnaturally at that." Walker spoke, leaning against the wall that he pulled one of the glass objects from, one that's shape was so distorted it was nowhere near any type of shape or symbol [L/n] had ever seen.
"So, Sir Walker, you're asking me to get a Quirk Alteration for experimental purposes?" [L/n] questioned, though she already knew the answer.
"That would be correct. Not only would it give us more information on the types of Quirks that we can put together and Alter, but if it works out the way I believe it will, your Quirk will no longer have a weakness." While [L/n] didn't like the idea wholeheartedly, it would give her a better understanding as to how it worked, up close and personal.
"If it is alright with My Lord, then I would like to alter my Sun." No, no I would not.
"Then we shall discuss it with him once he and Dawson are done." This isn't a good idea.
The two then looked at Aizawa and Dawson, and just as expected, Aizawa looked just as blank and tired as ever, Dawson seemingly giving up.
Or so it seemed, at least.
"[L/n], activate your Quirk." Aizawa commanded, taking the woman slightly off guard.
"My Lord, not that I am opposing you, but I don't think that's a good idea, not here." She replied, but he didn't show any sign of changing his command. Being in a dark, confined room that would illuminate far too much and trap the heat, this was the absolute worst kind of place to use her Quirk, especially with allies inside, even if the only actual ally was Aizawa himself.
Activating her Quirk, Dawson, Walker, and Aizawa all backed away from her as far as they could and faced the other way as to avoid getting permanently blinded. The ground beneath her was beginning to melt within just a few seconds, as well as the ground around her and the ceiling above her.
"You see, Sir Walker, Dawson, Sun is powerful, yet uncontrollable to a certain extent. And yet that is what makes it so powerful, so fearful, because if the user herself cannot contain it, then enemies have absolutely no chance." Aizawa spoke, his tired face and eyes unchanging as he shoved his hands in his suit pants pockets, though no one could see his face at the moment.
"It may be a risk to those around her, but she's smart enough to know how to use it in spurts as to not hurt those around her. Don't you think Sun would be much better on its own, much more stronger and catastrophic? Forgive me for disagreeing with your thoughts on what would be better, but Sun is perfect on its own." Aizawa spoke, and [L/n] knew that there was a hidden message behind those words, that he noticed her state of doubt in her own Quirk. The message, You're perfect just the way you are.
"You may stop your Quirk now, my suit is starting to disintegrate."
"Yes, My Lord." As the blinding light ceased and the heat vanished, the three turned around to look at [L/n], then taking note of the pool of liquified brick all around her, as well as dripping around her from the ceiling.
"As you saw, [L/n]'s Quirk is perfect and extraordinary just the way it is. Of course, I will leave the decision up to her whether she wants the Alteration or not, she may be my maid, but she is not my puppet. Her choice is her choice, now if you'll excuse me, I am going to get a breather." With those words, Aizawa left the room, hands still in his pockets, his eyes and face as tired as ever, his posture still slouched.
Emotion didn't work on him, not in the slightest.
He wanted to send a message, to prove a point.
And he succeeded.
