Prologue
"So your a serial killer, right?"
"In this, hypothetical." Ricky glanced up at his co-worker, C.C. warily before going back to studying his paperwork.
"So, you go up to this car with a nice, young couple in it, looking at a beautiful sunset, say 'hi', chat a bit with 'em, have a beer, make a few laughs, and then just murk them and leave. Where would you go?" Tinsley explained, simultaneously leaning on the filing cabinets against the wall.
Not looking up, Ricky replied without thinking. "Probably home. I mean, I spent a few hours with these people, getting to know them, and then had to murder them. I'd be kinda upset. Plus I'd need to clean up afterwards. Get the blood off."
C.C. took a moment to think. "I guess that's logical, but no one saw where the car went."
"Tire tracks?"
"None found"
Ricky realized he wouldn't be able to concentrate on his case with Tinsley asking all these questions, and finally closed the folder, looking up to see C.C. starring at him expectantly "What about looks? Or a name? Surely there were other people there who could've heard or at least seen what the guy looked like."
"Nope, it was in the middle of the woods, and even if there were, how are we supposed to find them? It's not like there are security cameras in that area..." Then a look of realization crossed his face. "But there are at the exit..." Suddenly C.C. was running all over the small, gray brick room, going through files, scanning the ancient computer systems, and leaving the filing cabinets open.
Ricky just stood in place, confused as hell. "What the hell does that mean? C.C., stop for a sec. what do you mean there are at the exit?"
Ignoring what Ricky said, Tinsley continued to run around but answered the question nonetheless. "There's only one way in and out of those woods, and the bodies were discovered the next morning, which means..." And that's when it hit him. "The murderer was the last one to leave!" C.C. gave him a nod, eyes big and smile wide with excitement. He took a seat at one of the computers and gestured Ricky over. "On the fence leading to the woods, there's a camera to make sure no one enters past closing. Since he was the last one to leave, all we have to do is find the last car on that day to leave the forest."
C.C. opened a video from the day the murders were committed and fast forwarded to the last car to leave. Going frame by frame, they watched, searching for any sign of something to help them find the murderer. A face, a license plate, even a piece of trash thrown out the window, but nothing showed up. The windows were tinted, a branch covered the only frame where a license plate would be visible, and nothing was thrown out the window. Ricky groaned in frustration and let his head fall onto the flimsy metal table. C.C. felt the same, but just stared at the screen instead and sighed. "At least we have the freedom to leave it unsolved. We do wok in the cold case devision after all. It just another one of those cases." C.C. patted Ricky's back and stood up. "Wanna go get a coffee?"
Ricky turned his head and looked up at his best friend, "Sure, why not? It's not like I have anything better to do."
"You do now."
The two detectives looked to the door to see their boss, Captain Brent, leaning against the door frame. "We've got some bodies for you two to look at."
Ricky stared at the Captain as if he were crazy, "...what?"
Brent chuckled, "I said: I've got some bodies for you two to look at. The rest of the department is flooded with their own cases, and all you two do is sit around staring at unsolvable cases, so you finally get to see something new. You start tomorrow." And with that he turned around and left.
Shocked, the two stared at each other, then slowly, smiles spread across their faces.
"Fuck yeah!"
