The Judgement
Main Character's POV:
"The court hereby declare that Mrs Vasundhara Chowdary as Guilty for killing her husband. She is sentenced for 14 years of imprisonment for murder of a person. I request the police officials to continue with further proceedings. The court is adjourned now."
The Judge gave his verdict and went off from his chair, followed by other officials.
I, both my maternal grandparents and my uncle were rooted to our seats without any motion. Maa too stood still in the stand. Her hands cuffed together.
We have been fighting this case since past two months. At least to reduce her sentence for her mistake. Grandfather and Uncle have tried their best to clear this mess, but my paternal grandparents and family just couldn't care any less.
They were so blinded by their son's loss, that they couldn't see the sins he has committed to my Maa, me, and to her. They only wanted to punish my Maa in the worst way possible, which obviously included me.
Unable to melt their stone heart, Grandfather, Uncle and even I failed, in doing nothing.
They sat on the benches, next to our row and had a pleasant face where I was crumbling down. After the incident they detested me. I am no longer their grandson. Suddenly, I became my mother's son, not their heir, which they used to call me every time we met.
I slowly turned my eyes to see them walking out of the court, as they had finished the work they intended too. They didn't look back at me even once.
Before I could turn my eyes back to Maa another figure seized my attention. She was looking at me with remorseful and guilty eyes, but my eyes conveyed a whole different story. She was the reason why my Maa is in this situation now.
I know we were not the so called happy loving family, still we were safe, peaceful and called as family, but nothing is left now.
I gave her a disgust look and turned away from her and wished to never see her face ever again.
Grandma and me were waiting outside the court to meet Maa, probably the last time before she leaves to jail. Grandpa and Uncle will follow her there and prohibited me to join them further.
A black van came in front of the jail and halted. It will take my Maa away from me. Slowly I saw Maa coming from behind with with two female constables beside her. Her eyes held no life and face held no expression.
In these two months, we never shared a word with each other. I used to go meet her, but she never even met eye with me, neither uttered a word with me.
But today she stopped near us. She first looked at grandma and at me. Grandma immediately hugged her and cried, but Maa just stood still. Grandma assured her that everything will be alright soon, but everyone knows that nothing will be the same from now.
She then came to me looked straight in my face and gave me a weak smile. The tears I held today came down pouring. She slowly brought her cuffed head to my head and brushed my hair and laid a feather kiss.
"Kanha....... take care, son. Maa is very sorry for not being with you and..." she sobbed, moving a step back from me and continued, "I don't know when I will be back either. Till then, study well. Be a good man, not like your father, and never ever break other person's trust. I Love You always."
I didn't even get the chance to reply to her as the female constables dragged her away from me to the police van which will take Maa to the women's jail.
All the while I didn't even blink as her figure kept disappearing from my sight.
She was forced to leave me.
She had left me then, but I didn't stop remembering her last words. Though I didn't promise her that I would not be like my father, I promised to myself that I would never fail her trust in me. But destiny had another plans.
We reached the court to meet the lawyer, to sign her release documents. As told by the lawyer I managed to submit a illness certificate from a hospital. It is an easy work for me as I am studying MBBS in an university cum hospital, and some senior doctors helped me without any question.
Maa kept staring at the house of justice as we were waiting for our lawyer to come. This is the same place where 13 years ago, the sentence was given to her. Guess, those memories are haunting till this day, same like my memories.
"Welcome, Vasundhara," greeted the lawyer as soon as he came to us.
"Thank you for everything, Sir," replied Maa.
"Yes. It's my duty. Anyway, do take care of yourself. You have to come and sign in the necessary documents every month, you should not go out of town without permission and you should not harm anyone...."
"My Maa is not a person who harms others. You better say the things correctly." I cut him off as he was spurting out unnecessary nonsense.
Maa held my hand and stopped me from going further. She asked me to bring the car while she will finish the formalities with the lawyer. I looked at the him, who was staring at me quietly. Pissed off, I went to fetch the car.
By the time I returned Maa completed her talk with the lawyer and signed the required documents. She silently got into the car and we started our way to home. At least that was my plan. But Maa had another thoughts.
"Take me to my parents house, son."
