Chapter 9: Saturday Night's are Sweet as Jam
"Do you even know how to drive?!" Anna yelled.
"Yes! Of course I do! I am a safe driver unlike someone that drives like a crazy person!" snapped Kevin.
Ever since we picked up Anna, she has been complaining that Kevin was driving like an old lady. Even though he was going the speed limit.
Rachel, Emma, and I are in the back seat watching them bark at each other.
"Have they been like this the whole time?" Emma asked in a whisper.
I nodded to her.
Rachel's gaze was set on the window as she snickered, "When are they not fighting over their driving skills?"
"True," Emma agreed
We all laughed together.
"What are you all laughing about?!" Anna turned her head to look at us.
"We are just talking about how you should take some tips from Kevin. Then you can drive us around," Rachel smirked.
"Haaha see!" roared Kevin.
Anna's face turned red. "Shut up," she yelled at him before sitting back in her seat.
"It's ok, you can fight with me all you want, Anna." Kevin winks, earning him a push from Anna.
"Ewww no thanks! I am good."
"That's hurtful!"
Then they both go back to arguing.
By the time we got to Lilyz Wing's cafe it was 6:50 at night.
"I am so excited for open mic!" Anna boomed.
"I can't wait to see who will come to this," I said while getting out of the car.
"There is one group I think you will really like, Luna."
"Really?"
"Yes! I think you would like their style," Anna laughed.
"I can't wait to get tea!" Emma exclaimed and jumped with her arms up.
"I am excited to get coffee!" Kevin added, jumping with her.
"Leave it to us to stand out no matter where we go," Rachel chucked
"Admit it you love us Rach!" Kevin pounded at her.
"I definitely love Emma more than you," Rachel said putting her arm around Emma
"Hey!" Kevin snapped.
"Come on you guys!" Anna called from the front door of the cafe.
Entering Lilyz Wing's cafe was so charming. It felt so airy, but at the same time cozy. The counter had a color palette of cool earth tones with wings painted on the walls and plants around the whole area. Then there was another room with a little stage that was warm earth tones. There were lights and wood in that room. But other rooms flowed together from the different colors to the decor.
I was in awe that it was so pretty.
Anna leans in front of me. "This place is cute right! I told you it was-OW!"
Anna groaned in pain as Rachel pulled her by the ear.
"Give her min to look around!" Rachel snapped.
"Let go of me!" Anna snarled, staring at Rachel.
The two of them were having an intense staring contest.
"Anna?" a voice called out.
We all turned to see a girl that was about our age with fire red short emo hair. She was wearing a black shirt with many necklaces, a purple flannel shirt that was unbuttoned, dark jeans with rips on the knees, and a pair of lace up boots.
My first thought when seeing her was I love her boots.
"Rain!" Anna shouted, unlocking from Rachel's eyes and running to this girl.
"I thought that was you! Looks like you brought some friends this time," Rain said.
"Of course, I did! You guys are amazing!"
"We are not that good yet," Rain replied, scratching her head.
"That's a lie! You are really good! Let me introduce you to my friends!" Anna grabbed Rain's hand and pulled her toward us. "Guys this is Rain! She is a senior at Mountain View High. She is in the band Flood Night also is the band leader."
"Mountain View High!? I hear that is a nice school!" Kevin belted.
"Yeah, it's not too bad," laughed Rain. "I am glad you guys came out tonight to open mic! It's a lot of fun!"
"We are excited to be here!" Kevin gave her a thumbs up.
"I am going to get some coffee if I am going to have to deal with this for the next couple of hours," complained Rachel who moved her hand up and down while pointing at Kevin.
"HEY!" Kevin scowled, following behind Rachel.
"I am going to get some tea," Emma announced then skipped along with them.
"I love your boots," I complimented Rain.
"Thanks! I love your boots too!" Rain smiled.
"Oh! Rain this is Luna! She recently just moved here. She is the one I told you about who likes music and can play guitar!" rambled Anna.
Rain's eyes instantly got wide. "Ooo! That was you!"
Anna put her hands one each of our shoulders. "I will let you two get acquainted!" she smiled then walked to the others getting drinks.
Rain and I stared at each other.
She chuckled, "Believe it or not I have heard a lot about you."
"Really!?" I giggled. "I have not heard anything about you."
Rain laughed a little. "I have a feeling Anna had a plan this whole time and did not tell us about it."
"I bet she did. Sounds like her."
"How long have you known Anna?"
Rain stopped and thought for a second. "We have known each other since we were 7 years old."
"Oh wow! That's a long time!"
"Yeah, we meet at summer camp. We go to different schools, but we always saw each other every summer at camp. Then when we got into high school we just hung out whenever we could."
"That's nice to have a friend you have known for that long for a time."
"Yeah, it's fun but also can get sick of her shenanigans sometimes," she laughed.
"Agree," I snickered.
"So, I hear you like music? Do you write songs or anything?"
"I love music. A LOT," I chucked. "I do write songs. One day I hope to make songs and produce music."
Rain nodded her head. "Nice. I dig it. You will have to let me hear your music at one point."
"Yeah, sure! One day," I promised.
Rain puts her arm around me. "I get it. When it comes to sharing music, it's a scary thing. When you're ready, people will be ready to listen."
I swear I could see stars behind her kind eyes.
"Come on let me show you the stage," Rain continued, grabbing my hand and pulling me to the next room.
The room was a good size holding a medium sized crowd easily. I followed Rain to the side of the stage where there were people with instruments getting ready.
"Hey guys I want you to meet Luna. She is Anna's friend," Rain introduced.
A guy and girl stop talking and look at Rain then to me.
"Hey!" "Hi!" they both greeted at the same time.
"Luna, these are the members of Flood Night. This here," she began, pointing to the girl with blonde hair and hot pink tips, "Is Alice. She plays keys. Then that guy is Chase. He plays drums."
Chase has black hair.
"Hi, nice to meet you guys," I greeted.
"It's nice to finally meet you!" Alice boomed jumping to me.
"You all have heard of me?" I questioned
"Yep, we all have. Anna talks about how you love music and plays the guitar," spoke up Chase.
"Damn that Anna," I blush, scratching my head.
"Like I said earlier. I think Anna planned this," Rain cackled
"How so?"
"Well, we don't have a guitarist. So I think Anna thought you would be a good fit."
"WHAT!" I boomed
"We have been thinking about adding a guitar. Since it does not sound quite right without it," replied Alice.
"Rain can play bass a little, but still not a perfect fit," Chase joined in.
"Hey! I tried!" joked Rain, making a face.
"So, basically, what we are saying is that we need a guitarist. So, if you feel like playing with us, you could get a vibe about whether or not to join," proposed Alice.
"Wow Alice, she has not even heard us play yet," teased Rain.
The three of them went into a rant, talking on top of each other.
"There you are."
I turned around to see Rachel behind me, holding a cup out to me. "I got you some coffee."
"Thanks Rach."
"C'mon, the others got good spots up front. It's starting soon."
I turned back to Rain and the others to yell, "I will let you guys get ready for the show!"
They looked at me, Rain being the first to answer, "See you after!"
"And think about our offer!" Alice called out as I walked away.
I nodded even though they couldn't see me and followed Rachel to find the others.
"Luna! There you are!" spoke Kevin when we reached them in front of the stage.
Anna slaps Kevin's shoulder. "She was with Rain and her band! Remember!"
"I know!"
"Looks like I did not miss anything," I sigh, looking at Rachel who nodded in agreement.
"What do you think of your drink!" questioned Emma.
I totally forgot about the warm liquid that was burning my hand. I took a sip of the coffee. It was good! It was sweet but not too sweet. I liked it.
"It's good!" I beamed.
"Their drinks are so good here," Emma complimented.
Anna was staring at me very intently. I look at her and raise one eyebrow in question.
"Well, how did it go with Rain and the band?" she asked.
"You planned this didn't you? For me to come here, meet them and to join their band?" I questioned her.
Anna nodded her head and after taking a long sip of her drink, chirped, "Yep, that was my plan the whole time."
"You are so sneaky," teased Kevin.
Anna elbowed him, shutting him up.
"I just know you would be perfect in Flood Night. They are just so amazing! Just wait until you hear them!"
Just then, as if on cue, the lights dimmed and the crowd cheered.
Open Mic was starting.
