"You're late Cyrus Jackson!" barked the male gym teacher.

"Sorry, Teach," chuckled Cyrus with a smile while he ran a hand through his perfect hair.

"It's fine, just don't make this a habit," Mr. Johnson growled with a cold stare directed at Cyrus. "Go join the others. Basketball today."

Cyrus nodded his head then turned and sprinted to his friends on the other side of the gym. I stood there, glaring at Cyrus while Rachel was staring at me.

"He can truly get away with anything," I mumbled to myself.

"Earth to Luuunaaa," Rachel sang as she poked my cheek. "Come back from the moon."

I turned my attention to Rachel and scowled at her. Her finger was still on my cheek.

"Ha ha ha, very funny, Rachel," I joked in a sarcastic tone.

"I try to be," she smirked then sighed, "Luna, don't let Cyrus bug you again today. Just don't think about him."

"You know what?" I straighten myself up. "I think I'm going to take your advice! I will not keep letting Cyrus Jackson bug me like a monster from the shadows!"

"Yes! Put that boy out of sight, out of mind!" Rachel boomed.

We both high five each other and lock our hands together.

"Let's do this!" I decreed as the sound of the whistle blared in our ears.

Rachel and I faced in the direction the sound came from. Ms. Bloom let the whistle drop from her mouth and announced, "Ladies! If you want to switch activities, you can do that now!"

Rachel turned to face me and said with a smirk, "You know what we should do to bring a little fun to the table?"

I knew what she was thinking. "Badminton! Let's do it!"

We walked over to the other side of the gym where the badminton nets were set up. Most of the other girls from our class played during the first half so there were a lot of spots to choose from. There were only two other girls playing, which was nice. We had it all to ourselves. We chose the middle court. I picked up a racket and looked it over to see if it satisfied my needs. Rachel was on the ground stretching.

"I should stretch too," I said as I joined Rachel on the floor.

The game was totally on. Rachel loved competing. She liked to crush people. Then there was me. I was not bad at sports. I just didn't like to lose, so whenever Rachel and I challenged each other, it was not all fun and games. We acted like it was life and death while we attempted to smash each other. That was why I liked gym class. I didn't have to think of a certain someone or anything, just the game and winning.

"I am ready when you are," I said as I got up off the ground.

I could hear cracks from Rachel's neck as she tipped her head. "I am ready. Let's do this."

I was in position and ready to hit the bird. Rachel served first and the bird came straight at me. I charged forward for the return. The game went on like this for several minutes. We were in the zone until someone shouted, "WATCH OUT!"

I turned to see a basketball coming straight at me at full speed. Before I could react, someone dashed in front of me with their arms up and caught the ball with a thud! The force of it made the person take a step back.

I was staring in shock at a boy less than an inch away from me. Breathing heavy, he looked down at the ball and took in what had just happened. His brown hair covered his face then slowly he lifted his gaze, and I saw the sunset over an ocean. I would know those eyes anywhere. Cyrus. He turned his gaze to me and locked with mine. I felt as if we were swimming in a lovely pool of waves, so close to the sun that we could touch it and get burned.

Cyrus blinked, waking me up from the trance, and asked calmly, "Are you okay?"

I nodded my head still shocked by what had just happened. "Yes, it didn't even hit me."

"I am glad," he said with a small smile.

Cyrus turned away from me to face the direction where the ball came from. A group of boys stood there frozen and looked shocked. He walked calmly toward them with the basketball in his hands. His face was calm. At that point, every student in the gym stopped what they were doing and watched him. When he reached the boys, he lightly tossed the ball to one of them with his stare fixed on the group.

"You know, you need to be a little more careful with your throwing," Cyrus stated with a serious tone. "It's a basketball, not a baseball."

They were shocked by Cyrus's tone.

He moved in close, got in their face and said, "We don't want anyone getting hurt, do we?"

When the boys shook their heads, Cyrus dropped the serious expression and smiled, "Okay then, now that's over with, and everyone is good, let's get back to the game."

Then everyone went back to what they were doing in class. The boys around Cyrus were laughing and talking. Everyone was back to normal. Some girls even went over to Cyrus to ask if he was okay. Once again, he was surrounded by so many people.

I hadn't moved since Cyrus walked away. I was staring at him, watching his face as he spoke with the people around him. Then he stopped what he was doing and looked up and was staring at me. He waved and gave me a thumbs-up. As always, he was cracking a smile. I waved back as he was sucked into the crowd that encircled him.

"Are you okay?" Rachel asked, stepping up beside me.

"Aaah, yeah," I answered.

"Are you sure about that?" she smirked while looking me up and down.

"Yes! I am fine, no injuries!"

Rachel was still eyeballing me and asked, "Yes, I know you're physically fine, but how are you doing mentally?"

"What! My... my mental state? N-no, I am fine!" I stammered.

I could feel my cheeks getting warm. Rachel was staring at me with a silly grin on her face and her arms crossed. "Cyrus just saved you!" Rachel beamed as she lifted her arms.

"I know."

"I bet your mind is exploding right now."

I looked at Rachel and said confidently, "You know what. I am not going to think about it! Let's get back to the game."

"Whatever you say," she shouted as she walked back to her side of the court. "You know you will have to think about it eventually."

"I know," I replied as I picked up and hit the bird. "Just not right now"
