Chapter 2: Hazel as Breathing

"When a plant doesn't grow, you fix the environment it's subjected to. Not the plant."

That was my first thought when I walked into my classroom and stood in the doorway. I looked around at the long black tables that were next to the big windows that faced some trees on one side of the room. My classmates were either out of their seats talking or messing around with the science equipment at their table.

I truly had no idea where to sit. Seeing how everyone was acting, I just stood there at a loss. "Are you new?" came a voice.

I looked over my shoulder to see a girl that was about 5'3. I looked at her. "Umm yes, I am new here."

The girl's eyes widened, and she started to smile. "Aww! A new student? What's your name?" she asked with greed in her eyes.

"My name is Luna," I said.

The girl took both of my hands and stared into my eyes. She started to jump up and down while still holding my hands. "Hi! My name Anne. It's nice to meet you!" She was almost out of breath from jumping. "Sorry, I get a little over-excited when meeting new people."

"That's ok," I said as she let go of my hands.

"You will love this class! Environment Science is so much fun! Ms. Oak is the coolest teacher!" I could feel her excitement as she talked.

"Just one thing," she paused and looked around before coming closer to me. She continued in a low voice, "Just don't make Ms. Oak's mad, you don't want to see that."

"Anne Jones, what are you telling the new student?" Anne and I turned to face Ms. Oaks who was standing in the doorway right behind us.

"Nothing, Ms. Oaks! I am just welcoming the new student and telling her that she will love your class!" Anne exclaimed looking a little scared.

Ms. Oaks looked at Anne and started to chuckle, "Anne I am just giving you trouble. You're one of my favorite students."

Anne started to smile like a little kid. " I knew you were joking!"

Ms. Oaks turned her attention to me. "You must be Luna." I nod my head. "Welcome to Rose Hill High," she greeted with a smile then turned to look at the clock on the wall.

"Oh, my! It's time to start. Students get to your seats, class is about to start." All the students started trickling to their seats.

"Talk to you more later," Anne grinned then skipped to her seat.

"Well, Luna, we have assigned seats in my class, so, let's see where you can sit." Ms. Oaks looked at her seating chart. "You can sit by Rachel in the third row back." Ms. Oaks pointed at where my seat was.

I turned my head and see the open seat then made my way over to the spot. When I reached my table, a girl with red-brown hair that is up in a ponytail and a headband was sitting at the chair closest to the window. I take the empty seat next to her and sit down. The noise brought her attention from the window to me.

She stared at me as I took my books out. "Hey," I heard. I turned my head and looked over at the girl. "I am Rachel."

"Luna," I respond

She nods her head in approval. "Nice name, I like it."

I stared at her and cracked a smile. "Thanks."

"Ok, class," Ms. Oaks said as she finished writing on the whiteboard. She turned and faced the class. "Today we are starting chapter 3 in your textbook on plants. Plants are a big part of our environment-" the door opening interrupted her.

A boy with light brown hair walked into the classroom. "Well, nice of you to join us, Cyrus," commented Ms. Oaks. I couldn't tell if she was being serious or joking.

The boy looked at her with an awkward yet charming smile. "Sorry, Ms. Oaks. I got up late," he said scratching his head.

"Just don't make a habit of it," she said in a snaping tone. "We are on chapter 3."

Cyrus nods.

He walked down the middle of the aisle between the tables. He was looking down as he walked. I couldn't help but stare at him. I noticed his eyes were...yellow? Or...were they brown? I couldn't figure it out. So, I kept watching him as he got closer to me. Once he was halfway through the row, he looked up and I can finally see that his eyes were hazel.

Very interesting, I thought.

Then I realized that he was looking at me. Oh, shit! He noticed me looking at him! I turned my eyes away to look back at Ms. Oaks, but I could still feel his eyes on me. He stopped at the table in front of me and sat down. He took his book out of his bag, and I could see from the corner of my eyes that he had looked at me one last time before opening it.

I couldn't help but spend most of the class period staring at his back. I had no idea why I was watching him. There was something about him I couldn't put my finger on. I heard the bell ring. My eyes go back to the front of the classroom as if I had not been staring at him the whole time.

"That's it for class today," Ms. Oaks said.

I started putting my books away into my bag. A hand slid a piece of paper to me from across the table. I looked up at Rachel. She let go and placed her hand on my shoulder. She stared at me and gave me a smirk.

"What?" I said lost.

"Nothing," she replied. She stood up from her chair and left me alone at our table. I looked at the paper and opened it.

I see Cyrus caught your eyes. Be careful with that one.

I looked at the note feeling a little embarrassed that Rachel noticed me watching him. I reread the note again. What does it mean? "Be careful with that one." I am very confused, trying to figure what Rachel meant.

I looked up from the note and noticed Cyrus standing in front of the class looking at me. His eyes widen and his eyebrows rose when he noticed I was looking back at him. He looked away and ran a hand through his light brown hair. Then he looked at me and gave me a huge smile before walking out of the classroom.
