Chapter 19: Thoughts
When Monday rolled around, I had no idea what to do related to the Cyrus kiss on my cheek. Should I avoid him at school? No, that's a little too much. I could tell my friends what happened at his Halloween party. I know Anna will have a field day about that. I know who I could discuss this with, and they would not freak out on me.
"You're telling me you played at Cyrus's Halloween party, and not only that, he asked you to dance with him. Then, at the end of the night, he kissed you on the cheek right when you were leaving?!" Rachel repeated it back to me. Summarizing the whole story I just told her.
"Yep, that's what happened."
Rachel and I are on the school's soccer field. Rachel had morning practice today. I wanted to talk to her alone to share what happened without the rest of the group.
I slumped farther down on the bleachers. "I don't know what to do.'
Rachel looks at me. "Luna, can I tell you the truth? I know you will not like the truth of what's happening, but you need to hear it."
I look at Rachel. She seems so calm about saying what's on her mind about the situation. I signed. "Fine, let's hear it. I promise to be open about what you are about to say."
Rachel mirrored her eyes and gave me a look. "I know you will deny this, but you need to hear it.'
I nodded my head. "Tell me your wisdom of the day, oh powerful Rachel."
She rolled her eyes. "First of all, I am pretty sure Cyrus has a crush on you. Second, I think you like him back. You keep pushing him away for some season. If a part of you likes Cyrus, you should try to give him a chance. I am not telling you to start dating. Just try to get to know him better. Start by becoming friends."
I sat up on the bleacher. I looked at Rachel and then at my hands. "That's the thing. I don't know what I think of him. I am always focused on my music, if you cannot tell by now. I feel like a boy like Cyrus will distract me. I may lose myself if I and Cyrus become something more.
Rachel grabs my hands. "If you guys don't work out, it's not meant to be then. But if you have a spark of liking him and are scared of what will come from it. You will never experience it. Trying new things can be scary, like liking a boy. You can't think badly of all relationships, or you will never meet someone who truly loves you."
I lean my head on Rachel's shoulder. "I know. Boys freak me out half the time."
"You are perfectly fine around Kevin!" Rachel joked.
"Kevin is Kevin. Not a cute boy who keeps trying to make moves with me."
"So you did notice Cyrus flirting with you!" She laughed.
"I will admit, I didn't notice initially, but I noticed quickly."
That's when Rachel burst out laughing. "Was that before or after I pointed that out months ago?"
I made a face. "After you pointed it out at the hockey game."
"I knew it! Called it!"
That's when we both started to laugh. "So what are you going to do?" Rachel asked.
"I need to change my mindset about Cyrus. He truly is not an asshole popular kid. Maybe even giving him a chance to be friends with me."
Rachel was smiling. "Good decision. Maybe then you too will be dating." She said, standing up.
"Don't jump the gun yet!" I hissed, standing up and following Rachel down the bleacher steps.
We were grabbing our bags to start heading to the main school building. "Oh, and by the way." I reached out a bag to Rachel. Rachel makes a face at the boring shopping bag. "Happy Birthday!" I beamed.
"How did you know?" She scowled, taking the bag from me. "Kevin and Anne." I joked.
"Of course, they told you. I am guessing they will surprise me with something." Rachel said. I nodded my head. "I have no idea what it is. It will be a surprise for both of us." I laughed.
"Indeed, it will." That's when we walked inside of the school.
"Happy Birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy Birthday, Rachel!"
Everyone sings to Rachel at the lunch table. Anna got a cute little birthday cake for Rachel. Rachel looked happy but did not want a big deal for her birthday.
Rachel blew out the candles. We cheered. "Did you make a wish?" Emma asked.
"Yes, I wish you all to stop making this a big deal."
"Come on, Rach! Let us celebrate you!" Kevin jokes.
Rachel rolls her eyes. We cut into the cake. It was a strawberry cake, Rachels's favorite, which is also my favorite.
"Happy birthday, Rachel."
We all turn to see Cyrus staying in front of our table. "Thanks, Cyrus," Rachel answers.
He then looks at me. "Hey Luna, thanks again for coming to my Halloween party." He was rubbing his hand through his hair.
"It was a fun party." I smiled.
"Can I walk you to your next class?" Cyrus asks.
My eyes widened. Cyrus walking me to classes!?! Okay, that was new.
He stops looking at the floor to meet my eyes. "I wanted to talk to you."
I just stared at him for a minute. That I almost forgot to respond to him. "Sure, we can walk together to our next class."
I get up from my seat at the table. I look back at the table with my friends. I am surprised to see Anna holding her hands up to her face, watching me and Cyrus very closely. Then I noticed Rachel nodding to me. They are all fully glued, watching me and Cyrus leave. Nothing is going to happen! I think.
We walk down the hallway. Cyrus looked at the posters on the wall as we passed them. The first couple of minutes was quiet. I should have said something, but did not know what to say to him.
I was searching my brain for what to say to Cyrus. He finally speaks. "Luna, have you listened to the new PVRIS album?"
I was caught off-ground by the question. "Mmmm, Evergreen? Yes, I have. It's an excellent album." I smiled.
He blushed a little. "I thought it was a good album, too!" he chucked.
"I think they have evolved so much over the years. It's nice to watch a band evolve over the years." I added
"Evolvement is very important for growth," Cyrus responds.
I stopped in my tracks. "Wow, that's the first I heard you say something intelligent," I say bluntly.
He then stopped walking and looked back at me. He started to laugh. "Did you think I was just a pretty face? Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but I am not." he gave me his famous half-smile.
That's when my mouth dropped open. "I never thought of you as a pretty face, boy." I stammed.
He walked to me to grab my chin. "Then what do you think of me, Luna," he said, leaning closer to my face.
I could feel my cheeks turning hot from his touch. "A nice, smart, cocky guy that knows everyone in this school. You know how to talk to everyone and get what he wants." I respond calmly as he is still so close to my face, and his hand is still on my chin.
He stared at me in silence for a minute. He responded in a quiet, calm voice. "All that is mostly true, but I don't have everything I want. The one thing the person I want will not let me in."
That's when my heart skipped a beat. I thought I would die right there in the middle of the hallway.
"Luna, I like you. Can you please let me into your world?"
That's when I turned off my brain and followed what I had been waiting to do for so long that I did not even admit to myself that I wanted it.
I then grabbed Cryus' hand from my chin, Pushing his hand out of the way. That's when I stood on my tiptops. I leaned in to kiss his lips. I was kissing those beautiful lips of his.
He was surprised by my action, and caught him off guard. Then he leaned into my kiss, kissing me back, giving me back the same intense energy as he kissed my lips. He wrapped one hand around my waist. His other hand was on my face to guide the kiss.
His lips were soft and warm. He kissed back firmly as if he had wanted to do that for a while, after a couple of minutes of kissing in the middle of the dead hallway. I leaned away from him. Our kiss let go of each other.
That's when I honestly looked deep into his hazy eyes. "I can let you into my world," I speak, a little out of breath from his kiss and touch.
He looked down at me, and that's when he smiled so big. I never saw Cyrus smile that big. He then hugged me. "I would be honored to be in your world, Ms. Luna."
