Why Tom Holland is a bad choice to play Uncharted's Nathan Drake
Okay, maybe I'm late in this fight, but I just found out that Tom Holland has been chosen to play Nathan Drake in the movie adaptation of Uncharted. Now, I've been checking a few reactions on Twitter and Tumblr, and I've been extraordinary surprised by the lack of protestations against this choice. And yet... Seriously, guys ? I mean : look at him !
Don't get me wrong : I'm not here to judge an actor based on his physical appearance, I'm not even here to analyze Tom Holland's abilities as an actor. And before anyone throws this point at me, yes, I know, Holland has been chosen to play young Nathan Drake.
From this point of view, he even seems quite a good choice. Just see for yourselves :
Smiling, charming, even a bit mischievous... Perfect, right ?
But what worries me is the decision hidden behind this choice. Why would Sony choose to have an Uncharted movie set in Nate's past, with a young actor playing young Nate ? Why not to create another adventure of our favorite explorer with a more mature cast, just like we're used to experience it in the games ?
Some might argue that it is a bold decision from the studio and that we should appreciate this attempt to surprise us with an unexpected point of view (even though we all know such previous attempts often ended up terribly).
But I'm afraid the real purpose is not so candid.
By recruting a young actor to play young Nate, Sony is expecting to create a new franchise they'll be able to continue for years and years, Tom Holland aging over the movies.
Why is this a problem ? Because if Tom Holland does look like young Nate, he will never, never look like adult Nathan Drake as we know him. If you don't believe me, look at this picture from "The Lost City of Z", where Holland is supposed to play the son of an explorer in the jungle of Amazonia :
I mean : LOOK AT HIM !! He's a weackling : too young, too skinny, they even tried to give him a moustache to give him more credibility, but it's exactly the opposite ! Not for a second did I believe this boy was the son of Charlie Hunnam (the actor who played his father, the great explorer), nor that he would survive more than ten minutes in the jungle.
Some of you might reply me : "yes, but that's the point of this new Uncharted movie : he must look young, and he will age over the years". But I don't think so. Tom Holland has this kind of face that looks naturally happy, playful, and eternally young. He may age over the years, but he cannot change his natural features : he's small and thin (only 1m73 tall !!).
Can I remind you that Nathan Drake is 1m87 tall, and that he demonstrates over the games a great physical force as well as a heavy developped musculature ? Look at the width of his shoulders, his torso !
Now, why is this important ? I'm not some superficial fangirl who cares about muscles or body shape. And some of you might just think : "yeah, ok, maybe he'll never look like the original character, but so what ? He might do a good job anyway."
And I agree with you, Tom Holland is not a bad actor, I know he's a dancer and an acrobat, capable of great physical achievments, and that was perfect for his role as Spiderman.
But Nathan Drake is not Spiderman. What matters when choosing an actor is not his look, but the feelings he conveys. Look at this picture of Nathan :
What do you see ? What did the conceptors want you to see when creating this image ? Confidence. Adventure. Danger. A glance of subtle elegance, like the smooth approach of a great tiger. Now, look at Tom Holland :
What do you see ? Can you imagine for one second this 22 year old boy will grow up to convey you all those feelings at first glance ?
Aura is important : Tom Holland will probably make a great young Nate, but if Sony chooses to keep up with him in further movies, I'm afraid he might betray the image of the Nathan Drake we all came to love. All of it for the sake of ensuring many movies, by counting on the name of a very popular young actor.
So many great older actors could have play this role perfectly. It's a shame the very essence of Nate's character was sacrified over the necessity of profit.
What do you think ?
