Chapter 3

My skin started to burn and my blood boiled as the moon began to rise above us. The first wave of pain hit me, and I doubled over. I bit my lip to keep from screaming as my body rearranged itself, especially when my spine was involved. I lost consciousness due to the pain just after my tail grew. But that's alright, I wasn't supposed to be in control anyway.

The human side was gone. Finally. I hate being human, and she hates being me. I looked around, growling slightly. I didn't know the two male wolves in front of me. The black one was somewhat bigger than me, and radiated danger. An Artemis? Hmm. The human definitely went far. Why couldn't we stay with our pack, stupid human?

I sniffed him gently, and he snapped at me. I leapt back, snarling. Even if we were friends as humans, he couldn't talk to me that way! As if he was a threat. Sure, he was probably insane, but he was also probably inbred. I snapped at his heels, and he tackled me, snarling in my face.
We were distracted from our fight by the other wolf howling.

He was huge, bigger than any normal wolf. His coat was golden-yellow, and his tongue lolled out of his mouth. He pulled the crazy wolf off of me, and nuzzled us both. I stared at the black wolf, who tossed his head. This was stupid. I finally deferred to the black wolf, and we moved on. There were many wolves around town, but for the most part, they left us alone.

Then I noticed a sleek, beautiful, brown wolf on top of the town centre. She howled loudly, and the entire pack looked at her. She jumped off of the statue-thing, and led us to the forest. We moved fluidly, chasing down a herd of deer. They were all very focused on the hunt, as if this was what they lived for. Hm.

Then the brown wolf approached me. 'You're not from here.'
'No, Lycaon.'
'You need to join the pack properly.'
'I'd assume so, yes. And not the stupid paperwork I have to fill out as a human.'
She snarled, lunging for me. 'Do not test me. I am your superior, and you will treat me with respect!'

I responded with the affirmative, and she led me off into the woods, towards a silver fence. 'Do you know what this is?'
'Obviously. Why?'
'Touch it.'
I stared at her.
'Do it!' She growled menacingly.

I threw myself against the fence and blacked out. When I awoke, several members of the pack were licking my wounds while the Lycaon watched. 'Now... you are a part of the pack.' She told me. I nodded softly, before standing up. Obviously, she was insane. The black wolf from earlier followed me. 'Where are you going?'

'Is it really any of your business?' I snapped.
He growled. 'Well, since you're bleeding, yes. It is. You're a pack member now.'
I glanced at the Lycaon as everyone else dispersed. She was gnawing on a deer femur. 'Leave the female alone.' She finally told us.
I wagged my tail and trotted off into the woods, before catching a squirrel. It was a delicious one too, but as I was getting into it, the black wolf and the golden wolf showed up.

'Sophia!' The golden wolf barked happily.
I stared at him placidly. 'Do I look human to you?'
'Well, no.'
'Exactly. So no human names.'
The black wolf scoffed and lay down next to me. 'So, what would you prefer that we call you?'

I ignored him in favor of the squirrel, before answering, 'Do I really need a name?'
He shook his head. 'No, not really.'
The golden wolf lay down on my other side.
'So we're all just going to sleep here?' I asked, eyeing him softly.

'If you'd like.' The black wolf nuzzled me, and I stiffened. 'Look... I'm not really ready for this kind of thing...'
Black wolf nodded. 'Okay. But you have soft fur, and I'm sleepy.'
Golden wolf laid his head against me too, and the three of us fell asleep.

I woke up again as the pain ripped through me, turning me back into the human. The black wolf and the golden wolf were clearly going through the same thing.

Thankfully, I still had my clothes on. I stared at Oliver and Moon Moon as they turned back. "Did you... did we...?"
Oliver bit his lip. "I don't think we did."
"No way to be sure." Moon Moon agreed. "Not like we can remember."

He rolled around in the grass obliviously as we stared at him.
"Do... you remember what happened?" Oliver asked him softly.
"Not really. I just remember that Sophia had a yummy squirrel." Moon Moon yawned, then resumed grinning.

I got up, shaking my head. "Please don't remind me of that. I don't like eating raw meat."
"Ugh... I think I got some blood on my pants." Oliver made a disgusted face, and Moon Moon rolled his eyes. "Come on! Something's happening in town!"

We moved out of the forest into the town just as a group of Neos came bounding in. Then they shifted back painlessly, grinning more sinisterly than Moon Moon. What struck me was that they were all men.
"Greetings!" One of them boomed. "I am Alpha Conrad!"
"I'm Alpha Damien Thunderbutt!"
"I'm Alpha  Axel!"
"I'm Alpha Blaze!"
"I'm Alpha--!"

May cut them off there. "Oh, for God's sake. You can't all be Alphas!" She was standing on top of the statue in the center of town, which was a bronze howling wolf.
Alpha Thunderbutt stepped forward. "Dear lady, we share the responsibility of being Alpha so that each of us is an Alpha for a week, then they pass on the title. We're looking for our mates!"
The other 'Alphas' agreed.

"Oh. So this is just a plot to pick up girls." May snapped. "That's just great. Now get off of my land, before I shoot you."
"We're also looking for Thunderbutt's sister." One of the ones who hadn't spoken before stepped forward. He wasn't made of pure muscle like the others, he just seemed normal, with rust red hair and green eyes. "I'm pretty sure he misplaced her somewhere along the Pacific Northwest."

"Sorry, there's no one named, 'Thunderbutt' here." May smirked.
Red rolled his eyes. "His real name isn't Thunderbutt. It's Johanneson."
Thunderbutt glared at him. "Alpha Byron, you're out of line!"
He was tackled by a random blonde lady in the crowd. "Dammy!"
"Oh look. He found her." Byron commented.

"Hi Mom!" Moon Moon called.
May sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. "Christy, can you please tell them to get off of my land?"
"Why?" Christy asked, squeezing Thunderbutt's face.
"Because they're disruptive and annoying, and the last thing that I need is a bunch of teenagers getting pregnant."

Christy stared at her obliviously. "Why would that happen?"
May rolled her eyes. "What, you want to discuss this now, in public? In front of the entire pack? The Neos need to go. They would have found their mates already, not that they're here--"
"What makes you say that?"
"Because Neos' mates are other Neos." May then pinched the bridge of her nose, before jumping off of the wolf statue. "I know that yours wasn't, but wouldn't they have stopped listening to me talk and gone after them?"

The 'Alphas' all nodded and talked amongst themselves, except for Byron. Like the others, he just had a pair of shorts on. He crossed his arms. "Lycaon, we only ask for one week here."
May hesitated, before nodding. "You'll be stuck here tonight anyway."
