(Edward's POV)
"My grandma always says that attending family events is one of the qualities of a good person, so I don't see why you are refusing to attend your cousin's wedding," Lola said as she ate some grapes from the kitchen table. We have been talking about different things for the last twenty minutes as she watched me while I cooked.
"Victoria's wedding is during summer and I'm looking forward to spending that time with you," I said trying to argue with Lola although I knew better.
"When last did you go to England?"
"In ninth grade I think," I said with a small shrug.
"so you should definitely go and see all your extended family, aren't you missing them?"
I scoffed and almost laughed at that question before answering.
"I prefer missing them than meeting them, most of my cousins are annoying, and the ones in the country are enough to spend quality time with."
"You are just scared of meeting everyone at once and being the center of attention since you've not been to England in almost three years," she said mocking.
"I don't even know why you are trying to convince me anyway, mom's going to make sure I go and if I don't attend, my grandmother and Vicky are going to make my life hell," I said with resignation as I staired the chopped onions I just poured into the pan of heated oil.
"Chef Ed are you almost done? because I'm starving," she asked smiling .
"In a few minutes Bella."
" It smells so nice I can't wait to taste it," she said and I blushed a little which I hoped she didn't notice.
"You said something about visiting you Grandparents this weekend?" I asked.
"Yeah abuela told my dad she's throwing a party to celebrate uncle Alex's new wine and everyone must be there, thank God it's just Napa and nowhere far."
"Your Grandmother is so funny."
" Yeah to you, but to everyone in my family including abuelo, she's scary. The truth is that she misses her family since they are scattered across the country and she's holding a get together to see all of them at once," Lola said, the fondness for her grandmother showing in her eyes and the way she talked about her.
"Then I guess she'll be going all out for this ' wine tasting'," I said using one hand to air quote while I turned off the Burner with my other hand.
"Okay Bella, the food is ready," I said and she gave me a wide smile before replying.
"Dish the food and I'll quickly set the table". I nodded as I brought out plates for Lola and I, placing some of the fettuccine and the sauce in them while Lola set the table and brought out cups to pour drinks inside.
"Okay now let's eat," I said and sat down after pulling the chair for Lola to sit. I smiled as she quickly did the sign of the cross before digging in. Lola's nature of praying before eating always suprised me.
Lola was one of the most dynamic people I've ever met, it was like with her you couldn't guess, when I first noticed her habit of saying a prayer before eating, I was surprised but didn't ask and every other time, I never bother to ask. My family wasn't religious but we believed in God.
"Stop looking at me like that and eat, you know I always pray before eating so don't look suprised." I smiled and started eating also.
"I spent a lot of holidays at my grandparents house when I was a child that I picked up the habit from her, dad does it too so we all pray before eating". She explained, finally I get the gist of it, now I wondered why I never asked.
"My grandmother's most important rule at the table is, to make sure that we don't see your food in your mouth," I said and she laughed her eyes shinning with Glee.
"She actually said that?" Lola asked still laughing.
"Yes she did, she even had it printed one time when we were still young, 'chew with your mouth closed'."
I smiled fondly remembering seeing the words 'chew with your mouth closed' in colours of the rainbow printed on paper, the colours were supposed to make it easier to remember and it worked because years later I still remember it.
"And you said my grandma is funny, abuela has unofficial rules though that everyone tries not to go against or you'll get an earful, and her rules are so controversial to the normal dinning rules," Lola said as she poured some juice in her cup and mine.
"Ed, this is so delicious, where'd you learn to make it?"
"My aunt Cathy has an Italian cook who's like family to us because she has been with her since I was a child, whenever I visit, I get Lily to teach me Italian dishes".
" Woah that's nice, Beatrice has tried teaching me different dishes but I always manage to ruin them, Leo was her favorite student and he adored Beatrice, he even started learning french because of her," She said and smiled wistfully then we ate our food for sometime in silence.
"I know I've apologized to you but I want to say that, I'm sorry and I love you."
She smiled and nodded her head, I knew that she had forgiven me for my outburst last Saturday but I wanted her to know that it was a mistake and it's the fear of loosing her that made me react that way.
During our period of being friends before we started dating, I used to always ask myself how it was possible Lola was an unpopular kid like me at school, she was very easy to talk to, it was hard to be bored around her and she was beautiful. Maybe she achieved what she wanted to by hiding behind baggy clothes and little to no social contact with people.
I wasn't hesitant when our friendship turned into something more because I knew she wasn't superficial like the other girls, but at times when I heard her talk about her life in New York, I can't relate because it sounds like the life the cool kids at school lived, designer clothes, latest trends and parties. When I saw her old pictures and how different she looked now, I always ask myself if we would have dated if I met her before she changed.
Saturday was like seeing a glimpse of who she was before, lively and social. I've always known she was beautiful but I felt threatened how she looked that day, she looked like the girlfriends of all the cool kids I know, not the girlfriend of any nerd. She looked really beautiful and she conversed with that bartender guy like he was an old friend, it felt like I was minutes away from loosing her, minutes away from someone else discovering my hidden gem, I've told myself before that if Lola decided to show herself, I'll be doomed.
" You dork I told you you've been forgiven so stop apologizing," She said smiling then a small frown came on her face before she continued.
"Edward I want you to know that we have something I can't easily replace and you mean so much to me. I love you Ed," she said looking at me with intent.
Her words assured me of her sincerity and feelings but, it wasn't easy to be assured when I think of the contrast between Lola and me, she wasn't supposed to be amongst the like of me, if her life hadn't changed. I nodded and smiled then reached across the table to kiss her, I wouldn't ruin this date today with my thoughts.
*******
After our early dinner, Lola decided we should binge watch SpongeBob SquarePants. Sitting in the lounge with her, her head full of curls on my chest which vibrated with her laughter.
"SpongeBob has to get an award for the most loving pet owner 'cause despite how much I love snow, I'd never take this shit from her." I chuckled bringing my eyes to look at the TV screen and trying to understand what has been going on while I stared at Lola .
"Also most annoying dude too because he beats Jason and anyone who beats Jason should get an award."
"Speaking of Jason, it's nine already and he's not back, I need to change from this uniform," Lola said sitting up straight.
"I even forgot to ask you why you didn't change before coming over."
"I don't even Know, I got here and your mom was asking me why I was still wearing my uniform then I remembered I'm still in my uniform."
"I heard rumors that Brad Cooley, the student body president wants to file a motion to the school for a day free to where casual clothes every week instead of the no uniform week we have," I said thinking of how that might affect the students body.
"Oh, that would be so nice but I doubt the principal would agree, that woman would have us wearing our uniforms in our house." I chuckled at the thought then I heard a car pull up in the drive way.
"I wonder who that is."
"I hope it's Jason," Lola said and Jason burst into the house whistling happily.
"Hey Lola," he said falling into the couch
"Hey Jace, had a nice time?"
"Uh huh" he said nodding "I see you had a nice time too yeah, saw the kitchen," he said smirking at Lola who smiled back.
"Yeah but you might want to stay off the kitchen table till it's cleaned."
"Too much detail Lola, here's your keys," he said scrunching his face in irritation.
"Attitude of gratitude Jason, now what do you say."
"Thank you Miss Lola for letting me borrow your car."
