Chapter 38: "Any port in a storm"

Terry POV

"Honestly, I think only about five guys could survive the collapsing of the factory, including Jordan, but I'm not sure what their names were, and I would have problems recognizing them after so much time," I tell Danny.

We both sit in the clearing, far away from home, watching Jason and Ivory train in their wolf form. I am no longer comfortable with girls having their wolf run so close, Howl Pack. They are not a threat for now, but someone from my past is. Driving here was long, but at least I was sure no one was following us, and we were safe here.

"So, will you tell me what is happening between you and Julius?" I ask, and Danny not only averts his eyes but also gets quite red. Not that it's my business, but I wonder how it really works when you are the true mate of one werewolf but fall in love with the other.

He doesn't say anything, and I don't want to push him. I relax more, lying in the grass. It's been so long since I felt so... calm and happy. I'm not worth it, but Jewels managed to give me a sensation of affiliation, pride in teaching someone something, and warmth. I was 15 when I first took a life and continued doing it for the next 11 years. I was dreaming about my own family, but truth be told, I felt like I shouldn't have one. I was too twisted, too dangerous to raise a child, and as hell, I wasn't worthy to be a role model for anybody.

Maybe it is destiny, the rightful punishment for my crimes, that my past threatens me now when I finally believe that I can stop living in its shadows.

Pearl, who sits next to me, whimpers slightly.

"I want to play too," she says. "But I can't shift; Kiana doesn't talk with me."

I look at her with concern, she seems to have a fever and be in pain, but I wonder why? She was alright this morning when we left the house.

"Come here, kid," I say and touch her forehead. "You are on fire. Maybe we should come back."

On our road home, I clearly see something wrong is going on with her, and I'm getting increasingly worried. Danny, to my surprise, keeps exchanging glances with Jason, who, on the other hand, seems to be tenser and tenser with every passing minute.

Fuck what is going on?

"You ok, Jason? Are you in control?" Danny asks finally,  and Jason nods but seems to be struggling with it.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"I think Pearl has started her heat," Danny says, and his friend nods again, clenching his teeth.

Ivory glances at both, unsure a bit, and I spit:

"What is heat?"

"Heat is something only omega wolves have on a daily basis, I mean regularly every couple of months; it's an incredibly fertile time for a wolf, who pushes to have sexual intercourse and basically get pregnant. Because they are the most fertile among werewolves, during heat, they are usually in a state o haze; their instincts take over. But the problem is that Pearl is also releasing special pheromones which attract unmated male wolves with only one intention, to have sex," says Danny

I glance at Jason and see him breathing hard and his eyes shifting back and fore; Pearl isn't any better. She sweats, wriggles, and whimpers, I think, in pain.

"Heat is also very painful, we must go home as soon as possible, and I will be able to look after her," Danny continues." Ivory, is it her first heat?"

Ivory nods, biting her lips; she seems nervous. I look once again at Jason; he also seems nervous but ensures me that everything is alright, at least for now. But about half an hour later, his eyes are shifted, and he starts growling and tells me to stop the car.

"I'm too close to her; her scent drives me crazy," he pants hard." I need out, or I may try to hurt her."

He doesn't have to say it twice, I pull over, and he jumps out of the car; we are still far away, but I'm sure he won't have any problems taking care of himself. Now I must get Pearl home as fast as possible; I must do it.

Another hour later, Pearl's state gets worse, she is so red, and her hair is wet because of sweat; Ivory is holding her looking scared.

"Fuck, Fuck," Danny swears after phoning Aunty Mae to notify her why we are coming home quicker than was planned. I don't dare to ask, but it's evident that something is wrong.

"We have a problem; the Howl Pack was attacked today by the big group of rogues. Everything is fine now, Alexa and Natasha managed to control the situation, and most rogues died, but some can still be close scattered around. So Aunty Mae advised us to go home a bit around because it would be safer but with Pearl like that."

Fuck, we are close to home now. If I listen to Aunty Mae, it will take much longer, and according to Danny, Pearl's scent intensifies, and it's not good, but if we go directly home, we risk getting attacked is big and...

Pearl suddenly screams so loud, and to my utmost surprise, she attacks Ivory pushing her onto my car seat, Ivory falls at me, and I lose control moving the car's wheel to the left, and we fall off the road. I try to get control over the vehicle. Unfortunately, the girls struggling in the backseat don't make it easy.

The cars stopped, and I managed to push the brake; the impact was big, and the airbag saved me and Danny, but that's when Pearl opened the door and started running fast into the wood. Because of the airbag and seatbelt, I can run after her as fast as I want.

Ivory is quicker as she runs after her sister. Thankfully Pearl can't run too long as she suddenly falls and curls screaming in pain. We manage to get to her, and my hands shake because I have no idea what to do. This is not something I know how to handle, and the circumstances are dire.

The car is broken, and we can't go home on foot. So if any wolf attacks us, we have no chance.

"Her scent can attract others," Danny says. "We must find a shelter, somewhere to block her scent!"

I think I know this region very well, so...

"Couple miles south, there is the now closed constriction site of the mine with some buildings. We can break in; I'm sure there are no security cameras. It was too expensive for the mine management." I say, "Ivory, you will shift and carry your sister; I must go back to the car to take my guns. We must move quickly."

And so we do; Danny is riding on Ivory because Pearl cannot sit without support and, from time to time, also tries to break free. Her instincts also push her to have sex very strongly. He has to hold her firm, but thankfully she doesn't have the strength to fight him.

But we move; we move to our destination. It's been years since I took part in hunting in the woods, but I still remember how to do it; there is only one difference, this time, I'm a prey, not a hunter.

The moment I see the rusty fence of the abandoned site, with some portacabin buildings. Just a bit more, and we should be safe, and that's when we all hear howling, and in the distance behind us,  I see figures moving fast in our direction.

Ivory sprints toward the buildings and destroys the fence to get in.

"Danny, into the building, now," I scream, kneeling near the fence and starting to prepare my gun. They run fast, but I'm a perfect sniper; if I do it right, I can get rid of them. I put my look to the back-sight and wait; my breathing stabilizes. I'm nervous, but my body instantly gets into a well-known drill. Then, for a moment, I hesitate; what if they are from the Howl Pack?

But I can't take the risk; we are far from its territory, and after the attack, none of the warriors should be here, no matter what. And yet I hesitate; I don't want to kill again, and yet they run so fast in our direction; I know how looks the werewolf who is attacking and the one who is patrolling, so I'm sure they are rogues, but still, what if I kill the pack wolf? If I fire into the air, maybe, just maybe, they will run away, but I will lose an element of surprise.

Jewels are behind me, my daughters and Danny are with me; I can't take a chance with them, no matter what.

I hold my breath and with a heavy heart, I push the trigger. But I don't wait as I reload and press the trigger again; they don't run anymore, and the woods are silent.

I stand up to see that my family is inside. Still in her wolf form, Ivory sniffs the air around as I walk towards her and enter the portacabin building. Danny is in the corner holding Pearl in his arms as she whimpers and cries:

"It's hurt, it hurt. I don't want this pain."

I kneel in front of her and gently touch her face; tears are coming from her eyes as she lets me take her from Danny and hug her.

"Are we safe for now?" Danny asks, and I nod." Her temperature is going up. Soon, she will be in her most painful time, and she may try to run away again. When you went to the car I called Julius and told him where we are going, he will come soon. So we must wait a bit."

But we may not have that time as I hear Ivory's growling. I notice them as soon as I stand next to her; they walk towards us, this time not running, this time is more of them, and they know they should be cautious. We can try to barricade the door and hide inside, but there are too many windows, so we won't be able to block them all. The portacabins are put on each other like big blocks, and there is a ladder; if we climb to where are three of them, we may have a chance. Werewolves can jump but not that much, and if they try to climb in human form, they will be a better target.

"Danny, bring Pearl, Ivory shift, and put your clothes on; we must get up to the roof as fast as possible," I scream.

Easier said than done, especially since Pearl isn't well, and the moment we took her outside, her eyes shifted, and she actually tries to break free and run. Her wolf wants to mate, and she smelled males coming to us, and her instincts to breed kick in, but thank God she is too weak to do it.

Danny has to strap her to Ivory's back, and she climbs up; he goes next as I manage to shoot one of them, but my two bullets miss. They are too close; they run faster and faster. I bite my lips and wait for the last possible moment for me to jump and start climbing two; Danny uses my other gun to wound the rouge who was about to bite my leg off my body.

We manage to do it. We are on the roof of the portacabin, surrounded by at least a dozen rogues. Some of them howl and try to jump on us like madmen.

"Pearl's pheromones probably influence them," Danny says." We are in the open space, but her scent must be powerful."

I reload my gun; I don't care about the ones jumping blindly on us; they won't reach us here, but about those who stand a bit far away, five of them. They shift, and one of them shouts:

"Send the bitch down, we will have our way with her, and then we will leave, and nobody gets hurt. She is so in heat that she wants this as much as we do."

I could shoot him, but I have a feeling the moment I take my gun, they will hide behind the nearest building, and I can't afford to waste ammo, no matter what.

As the conformation of his words, Pearl whimpers loud, her eyes still shifted, and she tries to crawl to the edge of the roof, but her sister holds her still. Then, one of those trying to jump on us from downstairs blindly shifts and starts climbing up the ladder. I wait for him to be in my leg reach and mercilessly kick him in the face. Thankfully, he falls quickly.

But I have no more time to wonder what next when I see shitfed wolve climbing the ladder on the portacabins next to us, and I feel a cold sweat on my neck, knowing what their plan is. They may not be able to jump from down, but they will be able to jump from that distance being on the same level as us. I shoot one, but they jump simultaneously; one falls down five more land on the roof. I shoot again but miss. They charge at me, but Ivory interferes and, in her wolf form, manages to push three of them off the roof but goes down too. Busy with the two that are left, I can hear her whimpers of pain; she is alone down there with all of them.

I put my knife in the one who jumped on me, I feel terrible pain because he knocks me to the ground and hit my spine, but I don't stop stabbing him. I must hurry, my daughters... my daughters need me. I push the dead body out of me; my lungs clench painfully; I'm sure I have some broken ribs.

Danny had to let Pearl go to protect both of them from the last one, and he protected them well; he shot him and managed to grab Pearl again before she tried another jump.

Her screams of pain are mixed with Ivory's howls as I try to get to the ladder as fast as possible; I must be there with her; I must get to her.

"Terry!" Danny screams as I stand on the edge and shoot next, seeing Ivory being cornered like a fox by hounds during the hunt. My hands are shaking, Ivory falls, and that's when Howl Packs come.

They run from the forest; their howling and snarling drew the rogues' attention to them and far from Ivory.

I ignore the fact that all rogues seem to charge at the Howl Pack's warriors as I get down and run as fast as I can to my girl. She whimpers as she shifts, still with her claws and canines out. I take off my jacket and wrap it around her; she huddles in my arms, bleeding from her many bites and cuts.

"I've got you, Ivory; you did so well," I whisper, holding her close.

So, I happily announce that there are just ten chapters more, and the story is finished :)
