Part 14
Sadie yawned and looked over to see Harry breathing deeply beside her. She reached over and brought a hand to his forehead, pleased that his fever seemed to be breaking. He was damp with sweat and pale, still shivering slightly, but nowhere near as warm as he had been the night before.
Sadie sat up in the bed. The night before? There was sunlight streaming through the windows! Had she really fallen asleep for that long? She'd stayed the night, and not only that, but shared a bed with Harry Peterson, all night.
She heard a low whine from beside her and turned to see Harry stirring, exhausted and uncoordinated-ly running the back of his hand over his face.
"Hey Buttercup," she smiled, still laying on her stomach where she'd fallen asleep. "How you feeling?"
"Sick," Harry whimpered.
"Still bad?"
"Not like yesterday."
"Nauseous?"
"Mhm," Harry's eyes filled with tears and his nostrils flared, a sure sign that he was about to start crying.
"Hey, don't cry." Sadie said gently, but Harry just stared at her and a tear slid down his face. "You'll be fine, I promise."
"Hurts," he croaked. "Don't like it."
Sadie didn't think, and placed her lips on his cheek to stop the tear from sliding farther. "I know you don't like it, but I'm right here."
Harry's eyes unfocused for a few moments, and when they refocused he blinked and stared at her. "Were you here all night?"
"Yeah, all night."
"Thank you,"
"For what?" Sadie knit her eyebrows together.
"For staying," Harry said softly.
"Of course I stayed," Sadie said. "I wouldn't want to leave you."
Harry's face paled and he groaned, squeezing his eyes shut.
"Are you okay?" Sadie asked nervously.
Harry shook his head. "Gonna hurl."
Sadie quickly leapt up and helped him to the bathroom, where he fell to his knees and scrabbled to lift the toilet lid.
"I'm gonna throw up," he mumbled to her, breathing heavily.
"I know," Sadie said, remembering how Hayden had held Harry's waist and doing it herself.
"You . . . 'emem'er." He said thickly, eyes half open as he drooled over the toilet.
"Sure I do," Sadie smiled, rubbing at his neck. "Why wouldn't I remember?"
"Dunno," Harry mumbled. "Jus' thou' y' 'oul' 'orget."
"I remember a lot of things you tell me."
Harry didn't answer, opting to hide his head in the bowl and retch loudly, bringing up any water he'd been coaxed into having the night before.
"No, don't cry, you're okay." Sadie said gently as she spotted tears beginning to slide down his face. "I'm right here, you're not alone."
"It 'urts." he croaked before heaving again.
"I know it hurts, and it sucks, but your body is fighting something right now and for whatever reason this is how it needs to heal you." Sadie said. "I'll bet by tonight you're feeling way better."
"Wanna be better now," Harry croaked.
"I know, and I wish you were."
Sadie reached for the toilet handle, but Harry stopped her. "'ot done 'et."
Sadie winced as he lurched forward again, and she found herself wondering how the hell he had anything left to bring up.
"'ake it 'op." Harry croaked, coughing and beginning to gag again.
"I don't know how to, Harry, I'm sorry." Sadie said, tears brimming in her eyes. "I wish I could, I just don't know how to."
Harry whimpered and hung his head back over the bowl, breathing shallowly. "Don' wan' 'o 'ow up any'ore."
"Are you going to?" Sadie asked dumbly.
"I 'on' 'ow." Harry whimpered, his voice breaking.
They sat in the bathroom for another few minutes before Harry lurched forward again to expel the last of his stomach.
"'m empty," he mumbled, coughing and spitting into the water before flushing the toilet. "'m really tired. Don' think I can ge' up."
"I'll help you." Sadie promised, sliding her arms under his pits and starting to lift him up to his feet.
Harry did his best to help, but he was so weak that his legs shook and he had to grip Sadie with all his remaining strength to stay upright.
"Th-thank you f-for stayin'." He mumbled as he crawled back under the covers. "I really ap-p-preciate it, you didn' have to."
"I know. I must have wanted to." Sadie laughed.
"D' y' min' stayin' up wi' me?" Harry's question took her by surprise. "I jus' . . . I li'e talkin' t' y'."
"Yeah, o--of course, I like talking to you, too." Sadie said, a bit surprised.
"Do you?" Harry asked, and Sadie could hear the surprise in his voice as well.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I?"
"I'll choose not to answer that." Harry said, and yawned widely. "'m real' sleepy now."
Sadie laughed. "Go to sleep, I'll still be here when you wake up."
"Y' promise?" Harry asked, yawning again. He lifted up the blankets weakly. "C'mon, climb in. I don' wan' y' jus' standin' there."
Sadie hesitated for only a moment before slipping in beside him. He gratefully let his arm fall, draping over her waist as he let go of the comforter.
"I' this alright?" he asked, moving his fingers a bit to try and let her know what he was asking about.
"Yeah, it's fine." Sadie smiled.
Harry smiled at her, and despite his shivering, despite his pale skin, despite the fact he had just been ill, despite that he was completely sapped of any strength he had--Sadie thought he was cute. They were curled on their sides, looking at each other's eyes, and she wanted to experience that more than once.
"I really like you, Harry." she whispered.
"I li'e y' too, love, bu' y' know tha' already, don' y'?" he said in a slow, drawling voice, eyes clearly becoming heavier. He was fighting sleep, fighting sleep to stay awake and look at her, talk to her, smile at her.
"Close your eyes," Sadie smiled.
"Bu' then I can' see y'," he complained. "I li'e seein' y'."
"You're adorable," Sadie laughed, and his tired smile reappeared. "I like seeing you too, but I like seeing you healthy."
"Oh don' worry, Muffin, I'll ge' heal'y again real soon, jus' f'r you." he slurred, eyes sliding shut involuntarily.
"You do that, Buttercup," Sadie whispered, hearing his breath even out. "You do that."
Even in his sleep, Harry seemed to have heard her, because a soft smile etched his way onto his lips, and Sadie played with his hair, watching as he slept, until she too drifted off.
When Sadie woke up, she had the strange feeling that somebody was watching her. She slowly opened her eyes, only to be met with brilliant blue-green ones.
"Hi," Harry said softly, a smile just as soft appearing on his wonderfully pink lips.
"Hey," Sadie said, her voice quiet and full of sleep. Harry thought it was beautiful. "Have you been watching me?"
"Maybe a little," he admitted, the right side of his mouth snaking into a smirk.
Sadie couldn't help herself, and pulled her phone out.
"Taking pictures of me already, hm?" he asked, still smiling tiredly.
"You look cute," Sadie shrugged.
"I highly doubt that," Harry chuckled softly.
"Don't believe me? I'll send it to you." Sadie laughed.
"You're right next to me, just show me."
"Where's the fun in that?" Sadie smiled.
Harry shuffled around for a moment, then withdrew his hand from the blanket to reach out and touch her face.
"What are you doing?" Sadie breathed, heart hammering in her chest.
"I wanted to feel you," he whispered, still moving his fingertips along her skin. "Make sure I wasn't dreaming."
"Why would you be dreaming?"
"I don't know, maybe I was asleep still, or maybe I'd died and gone to heaven?"
"Why would you think that?"
"Because I've never woken up to such a beautiful sight before," Harry said truthfully, voice soft and hardly a whisper.
Sadie was just about to respond when the bedroom door creaked open, and Hayden popped his head in, looking at them for a moment before coming in and sitting at the edge of the bed.
"Hey brother," he said, placing a hand on Harry's shoulder. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm okay," Harry shrugged, rolling onto his back to look at him. "What time is it?"
"Just past noon," Hayden smiled. "You've slept for awhile. Have you been up since last night?"
"Yeah," Harry yawned. "'m okay though, Sadie was here."
"You're okay with Sadie, aren't you?" Hayden smiled, glancing over at her.
"Yeah, of course. 'm always okay with her." Harry smiled tiredly, and again Sadie was tempting to capture the moment to keep forever, but refrained because Hayden was there. "I'll always be okay if she's there."
Sadie blinked, then blinked again twice. Had he really just said that? Did he mean it? Why would he say that if he didn't mean it though? Why would he think that in the first place? Did he want her to stay? What would Hayden say about it? He'd probably tease them. Did Harry want to be with her? Did--
"Hey," Harry whispered, fingers brushing her hand until he had finally found her fingers and entwined them with his. "You good?"
Sadie nodded, a bit afraid to speak for fear that her voice would come out in a squeak.
"When did you get up?" Hayden asked, looking to Sadie because he knew that his brother would have been far too out of it to know.
"About seven or so." Sadie shrugged.
"Alright, so you haven't been sick for a few hours then." Hayden said, nodding slowly. "Hey, that's good!"
"I still don't feel good," Harry mumbled. "M' head hurts like crazy."
"What about your stomach?"
"It's . . . i's okay. Hurts, but i's okay. Not gonna be sick or any'in'."
"Good," Hayden smiled, patting his brother on the chest. "Good, that's good. I'm glad. Um, listen, Eli and I are gonna go out to the store, we're out of some things, so we'll pick up some meds there. You can stay as long as you need to, yeah?"
"Yeah," Harry smiled. "Thanks."
"No problem," Hayden smiled, then turned to Sadie. "Sadie, um . . . thanks."
"For what?" she asked, confused. There wasn't anything to thank her for.
"For helping out, with Harry. For . . . for Harry."
"Um . . . yeah, sure."
Hayden smiled, gave Harry another clap on the shoulder, and stood and left, leaving the door slightly ajar. Sadie turned to look at Harry, who was watching her, just as she'd thought he might be. She could feel his gaze on her, but unlike with most people, or any people for that matter, feeling his gaze wasn't creepy or unsettling--instead, it was calming, and made her blush a little, because she liked knowing he was watching her, and watching her because he liked her.
"Yeah?" she giggled.
"You okay?" he asked.
"Yeah, I'm better than okay." she said truthfully. Being in bed with him, just lying there and looking at him . . . it was the calmest she had felt in years, and she loved it, and she loved him, and she wanted to wake up in the same bed as him a million times more.
"Good," he smiled. "Me too."
"Say that when you haven't been puking up your guts for the past fifteen hours." Sadie laughed. She frowned as Harry's face paled at the mention of it, and his smile fell. "You okay?"
"Yep," he said, sounding as though he were forcing the word out, and she didn't miss the convulsive swallow either.
"Are you going to be sick?"
"No, just . . . don't want to think about it." He said, clearing his throat and giving her a crooked smile. "I'm okay."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, 'm fine, jus' a bit queasy. I'm okay."
"You sure?"
"Yes, Sadie, I'm fine." Harry laughed. "Tell you what though, I'm tired of being in this bed, I want to get up."
"You're exhausted, and you've been sick all night, you need to rest, Harry." Sadie laughed. "What exactly is it that you want to be doing?"
"Well first I want to use the bathroom, but I was thinking maybe we could go watch TV or something."
"There's a TV right here,"
"But I'm sick of being in this room!" Harry moaned. "Do you want to watch TV with me or not? And please answer quickly, because I really have to pee."
"Sure," Sadie laughed. "I'm surprised there's any water left in you at all, you were throwing up so much."
"It's not my fault you guys kept forcing water on me, and there won't be any left in a minute."
Sadie laughed loudly, then rolled out of bed. "Okay, you go, I'll turn the television on. What do you want to watch?"
Harry slowly stood up and made his way to the door, pausing to turn and answer her. "Anything, you pick."
"Okay," Sadie smiled, watching until he reached the bathroom door.
"Stop staring!" Harry called with a laugh as he shut the door behind him. "I look like shit."
"If you say so," Sadie laughed loudly, and she grabbed her phone before walking downstairs.
She used the bathroom down there, grabbed a warm looking blanket, and curled up on the soft couch, turning on the television and skimming the channels. She felt the couch dip beside her, and glanced over to see that Harry had sat down.
"I didn't even see you come in," she said, surprised.
"I climbed over the back of the couch," he said simply. "Wanted to surprise you."
"Well, I'm surprised." She laughed.
"What are we watching?" he asked, stifling a yawn as he got comfy against the pillows.
Sadie grinned widely and pressed play on the remote, turning to gauge his reaction as the theme to 21 Jump Street began to play.
"Oh my God, I love you." he laughed, stealing the blanket away from her and burying himself in it.
"You're such a child," Sadie laughed. He was completely covered in the blanket, only his eyes poking out. "How dare you steal my blanket."
"Technically it's my brother's," Harry pointed out. "Now shush, Johnny Depp deserves our attention."
Sadie got through two episodes and halfway through the third before growing bored. She loved 21 Jump Street--well, Johnny Depp--as much as the next girl, but she'd seen the show half a dozen times and at this point knew it all by heart anyways.
Hey
I am legit right across the couch from you. That's, like, two feet. Why aren't we just talking?
Because Johnny Depp deserves our attention.
Whilst being on our phones. . .
Mhm.
You're weird, Sadie Hawkins.
Am I?
Yeah, you are.
But you like it, right?
No -_-
Oh :( sorry
I love it
Sadie?
Sadie I know you're there, I can see you.
Sorry, I was processing.
Like a robot?
No, like a human, you dishcloth.
That's a new one.
Get used to it, I don't insult very well.
Dude, why are you laughing?
Seriously, I love your laugh and all, but why? I just missed thirty seconds of dialogue!
Sorry, but you're funny. I like you.
I like you a lot.
Omg Sadie -_0
-_0? That's a new one.
It's called a typo, missy, now explain yourself.
Explain myself? Why, for taking a picture of a HOTTIE?
So this is where we are now, hm?
I love when you say 'hm,' it makes your voice all deep and sexy.
It's through text!
So? I can hear it in my head.
I read all your texts in your voice now too. XD
I feel like utter shit, and I look it, how do you like that photo?
Because you're cute. I mean, you were sick all night, how can you still look like that?
Like what?
THAT.
THAT?
THAAAAAAT.
Okay.
Okay?
Yeah, okay.
Okay.
I will NOT say okay.
Dammit all, I was trying to make a movie reference.
It's a book reference, and I know, because Elle loves that book. I hate it.
Why?
Because it's sad.
You're sad.
Not right now I'm not. Just sick.
Not what I meant.
I know what you meant, Sadie. And maybe that's why I don't like it. Because why would I make myself upset over a fictional situation, when I grew up with my own situations that weren't fictional?
To escape.
Escape what?
The pain.
By reading . . . and feeling more pain.
Hmm. Good point.
You're my escape. ^_^
Awww. Same here, you weirdo.
And don't be sappy. It's making me blush.
I can see that. XD
What do you read?
Lots of things, I like to read. Have you read Naked Heat?
Um, no, but it sounds like a perv's book.
XD
You don't have to answer with that, I'm sitting right here, I can hear you laughing. I can see it too. I like seeing and hearing you laugh. :)
Thanks lol
But no, it's a mystery book lol, don't you read?
Not that, apparently.
I have it at my mom's house. You can borrow it if you'd like to.
Thanks :)
OMG stop sending pictures of me lol
I know what I look liiike.
But I liiike what you look liiike. XD
You so pretty. :)
Aren't I though?
You're* -_-
Well that's a nice answer. XD
I am though. XD
Yes you are and I luuuuurv you.
It's spelled love, dear.
Will you go out with me?
Are you really asking me out over text?
Yeah, now will you or won't you?
Yeah, of course I will. :)
Yaaay :)
Me a very happy man
I'm*
Don't correct it, see, I already corrected it! ^_^
See, I can be smart.
I already knew you could be smart, Harry.
Liar.
I'm happy right now. :)
Because I'm going out with you?
I mean, it's not like we didn't already sleep in the same bed, and it's not like I haven't cleaned puke off your face, and it's not like--*gives you a chance to intervene*
SHUT UP
Please
You're a dork. XD
I'll accept that.
I want to kiss you so badly right now.
Of course you do, because I have luscious lips.
Not everyone would agree to that.
That's okay.
What did Johnny Deep just do!? What did they say!? I missed it!
I know you did, because you keep texting me.
You started it!
So, you're continuing it. ;)
Smart-ass.
You're the smart-ass in this relationship, Harry, not me.
I accept that too.
You do realize you called him Johnny Deep, right?
No, I didn't, but it's called a typo, Sadie, a typo.
Yeah, I know. I just thought it was funny when I noticed it.
Well, you gotta admit, it's not too far off.
True.
Not just the spelling. XD Do you know how deep he's in with all the lawyers and everything? The guy's got more court cases happening than a lawyer does.
True. It's the fame, or the drinking.
Can you look up for a minute?
Why?
Just do it.
"Harry, why--"
Sadie didn't get a chance to finish her sentence, because the moment she looked up, she wasn't able to speak; because the moment she looked up, Harry kissed her.
