A/N:
Sorry I haven't written, I had sort of a busy weekend and I kind of got hooked on the new book I got. Looking for Alaska by John Green, you all probably heard of it. JFC, it's so good, I love it so much. It still doesn't beat It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini though, that'll always be my all-time favorite book. Yeah so, here's chapter sixteen of Unlikely Savior!

*Phil's POV*
“What is he doing here?” my mother hissed as her eyes swung to Dan. Dan shuffled back a bit, moving slightly behind me. He released his grip from around my body and looked around the room, directing his eyesight at anything except my mom.
“Mom listen, before you freak out or anything,” I talked steadily, trying my hardest not to seem frightened, “I feel like you should get to know Dan a bit, he’s honestly a good person.” She eyed Dan from head to toe, summing him up before sighing.
“Where were you last night?” she directed her concentration towards whatever she was making. Dan glanced at me with a pleading stare. “Uh, I went to a party at a friends and they let me stay over for the night,” I quickly made something up, hoping I sounded convincing enough. She didn’t bother to question me about it any further.
“I did my studying and all of that before I left,” I pointed out watching as her shoulders relaxed slightly. Dan looked confusedly at me but I just shook my head dismissively at him. “Okay well, if you’re so insistent for me to get to know Dan,” she broke the silence, “He can stay for breakfast.”
I grinned as Dan smiled lightly before I directed him towards the dining table and sat by his side. I elbowed his arm to reassure him that nothing was going to happen to him as long as I was watching and he just grinned nervously. As we waited for the food, Dan quietly tapped his plate anxiously with his utensils.
My mom eventually came out of the kitchen with a stack of pancakes, both me and Dan staring at the plate hungrily. “Didn’t eat?” the two of us shook our heads in responses as she slid two pancakes on each of our plates. Once she sat down, the three of us immediately dove into our meals in silence.
“So, how’d you meet Phil?” my mom looked up from her plate at Dan with a cold stare. He glanced at me and I quickly nodded to let him know I was right there next to him. “Well, our teacher assigned him to tutor me in some of my classes,” he started out nervously, “And, we had a lot of common interests so we easily became friends.”
“Are you saying you do badly in school?” she pushed as she chewed on her food. Dan shuffled a bit in his seat before nodding, looking ashamed. “But, he’s been doing much better since I began to tutor him,” I piped in as Dan exhaled in relief.
“That’s good,” my mom muttered as she took a sip from her mug, “So, what was that whole event that occurred last week?” I groaned as the question came up, knowing it was going to come up eventually. Dan looked down at his meal, not knowing how to answer before I took over.
“Dan just got a bit drunk at the party and I helped him out by letting him stay here. I didn’t want to be rude so I let him sleep in my bed,” I explained, slipping in white lies, “Dan explained to me that he sort of ran off the next morning because he didn’t want to be in any more trouble with his parents than he already knew he was.”
I finished talking and my mom leaned back in her seat, seeming to contemplate whether she should believe me or not. She quickly finished her meal before picking up the plate and putting it in the kitchen sink as Dan and I sat in silence. She came back within seconds and sat back down, placing her elbows onto the table with quite some force causing Dan to look up.
She stared coldly at Dan, squinting her eyes at him and trying to scare him. Dan’s tough demeanor suddenly came back again and I found him reflecting her stare back at her. “I guess I might have gotten the wrong impression of you the first time,” she spoke carefully, not breaking their eye contact, “You’re not as bad as I thought you were.” Dan huffed as he leaned back into his chair, lightening his gaze a bit.
“So, how do you feel about Phil’s, you know, sexuality?” she changed the topic and my heart quickly sank at the question. I looked over at Dan as he looked towards m, the same thought running through our heads. What were we going to say?
Suddenly, Dan just grinned at me before directing his eyes back towards my mom, the smile remaining on his lips. “Actually, Mrs. Lester—”
“Marie. Call me Marie,” she interrupted and Dan nodded before starting his sentence off once again. “Actually, Marie,” he pressed on the word, “I just happen to be Phil’s boyfriend.” I widened my eyes and looked over at Dan, almost gasping at his words.
My mother actually did gasp and stared bewilderedly at the two of us. Dan smirked at her before taking my hand and locking our fingers together. She stared blankly at our hands for almost two minutes before taking a breath and exhaling deeply.
“As long as it doesn’t distract you from school, Phil,” she shrugged before getting up and collecting mine and Dan’s empty plates. Dan clenched his jaw as I felt him getting angry at her and I squeezed his hand a bit.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, “She’s okay with it.” Dan shook his head and closed his eyes. “No. She’s okay with it, yeah,” he mumbled, “But, she doesn’t even care that you’re happy. All she seems to care about is your school work.”
I sighed before standing up and guiding him out of the room so we could talk without my mother listening in on every word. “Look, my parents weren’t really successful as you can see,” I gestured around the house, “So they, mainly my mom, want me to do excellent in school so I could have the success that they never had.” Dan rolled his eyes a bit and shrugged. “Yeah but, she could at least be somewhat caring for you.”
“My mom has a plan, which I pretty much figured out a while ago,” I explained, “where when I become successful, if I ever do, she’s going to take my money and live off of my profit.” Dan groaned and ran his fingers through his hair as he tried to contain his anger.
“So she expects you to do well in school, yet she abuses you?” he raised his voice a bit, not actually yelling at me but more at my mom as if she was there. “That’s where the violence comes from actually,” I mumbled, “If I resent studying or do something to disrespect her rules, she hits me. If I get a bad marking in school, it’s even worse.”
As I spoke, Dan’s breathing grew heavier as he seemed to get more and more infuriated. “No. I’m not having her treat you like this and act like it’s completely fine,” he whispered sharply, “My situation is one thing, my dad beats me because he’s homophobic, but yours is another. That woman abuses you for her own benefit and I am not going to stay here and act like it’s nothing.”
“Dan, calm do—”
“No! I’m not going to calm down knowing that my boyfriend is being abused by his mother just because he doesn’t study every once in a while,” he shouted causing me to jump back a bit in fright. Dan noticed that he was scaring me before he relaxed and pulled me into a hug.
“Come on,” he suddenly began to pull me back to the lounge. I dragged my feet across the ground, trying to stop him or at least slow him down, knowing what was coming. Unfortunately, I was much weaker than Dan and we ended up bursting into the room in seconds.
Dan let go of me and stormed into the kitchen where my mom was washing the dishes and slammed his hand on the counter to get her attention. She jumped a bit before glaring up at Dan and waiting for him to say something. Dan took a breath before letting out his thoughts in the most menacing voice that I had ever heard come from his mouth.
“Look here, Marie,” he hissed her name as he looked down upon her with a harsh stare, “If you think that abusing Phil will lead you any closer to getting this ‘success’ you’re hoping for, then boy are you sure as hell wrong. Taking Phil away from every teenage experience he’s supposed to have just so he could get a job as what, a doctor or some shit, for your own benefit is complete bullshit. If anything, your horrible parenting would lead him to having some kind of mental disorder and ending up in a mental institute for which youwould have to pay for, or worse, it’d lead to his death.”
Marie stared wide eyed at Dan as he breathed heavily after finishing his rant. She seemed to be contemplating everything that she’d done to me as I watched the guilt and regret flood into her eyes. Suddenly, she spotted me standing at the kitchen entrance and ran over to me before squeezing me tightly in a hug.
I looked up at Dan as he stared back at me in confusion as I reluctantly wrapped my arms back around my mom. She pulled away from me and smiled, tears falling from her eyes before I frowned.
“No, this is bull,” I shook my head, “You’ve been treating me like crap for practically my entire life and all of a sudden after one person yells at you, you’re all comforting? That’s just bullshit.” She looked at me with a bit of anger flashing in her eyes before it disappeared completely and got replaced with guilt once again.
“Look, I know I’ve been a terrible parent for your whole life, I wouldn’t even call myself a parent. It’s just your father is gone for almost the whole year and I’m alone and expected to make you into some sort of successful doctor,” she broke down, “So it was just a way in which I could cope and mold you into what everybody expects me to make you and I know that’s a horrible excuse but I am so sorry, Phil. I know it never really seemed like it, but I love you so much, and I’m so, so sorry Phillip.”
I always knew she was serious when she used my full name but it wasn’t like I’d give in right away, I couldn’t. She’d treated me this way my entire life and left me so many scars, emotionally, mentally, and physically, I couldn’t just forgive her. But I could see it in her eyes; she was being sincere and genuine.
I sighed and looked down at the ground as she looked at me hopefully. “I’m not just going to forgive you that, you know that, right?” I mumbled, not bothering to look in her eyes. I felt the pain in her stare as I kept my sight on my feet.
She suddenly pulled herself into me once again, this time I didn’t bother to repeat the action. “Phil I can’t tell you how sorry I am. I know you’re not going to forgive me now but starting from now on, I’m going to spend every waking moment trying to prove to you of how sorry I am until you actually do forgive me,” she bawled as she soaked my shirt with her tears.
I pushed her back after a few moments and nodded, smiling slightly at her. The two of us looked up to find Dan staring bewilderedly at the two of us. “I’ve got to get home before my parents think I’m dead,” his eyes flashing with slight pain as the sentence left his mouth, “So, I’ll get going.”
The three of us walked to the door and Dan grinned at me before pulling me into a warm and comforting kiss. I smiled beneath his lips before pulling away and facing my mom to find her grinning as well. “Well, see you tomorrow I guess,” he shrugged before hugging me quickly and leaving the house.
“You’re welcome anytime!” my mom screamed before shutting the door and facing me, a smile still plastered on her face. I shrugged and lightly smiled back before dashing up to my room, not really feeling comfortable around my mom being so kind all of a sudden. But even though it was a bit rushed for her and I didn’t completely trust her, I knew by the look in her eyes, she wasn’t lying and I knew that from now on, things would be different.
