Chapter 1: Izabelle POV
"Please take one more picture, Conner," I pleaded. I had been standing in the rain for an hour, trying to capture the perfect shot. "Iz, we've already taken 20 photos," Conner replied. "You're going to catch a cold," remarked Ashleigh, one of my cheer squad friends. After some convincing, I persuaded them to take a few more shots. "That's 40 and counting," Conner eventually said. Maybe I had pushed it too far.
Just then, my phone rang. "Izabelle Waters. Hi," I answered the call. "Where are you? The game's about to start, and the coach is getting impatient," Leah, another cheer friend, said. "What do you mean? Haven't you guys gone on yet?" I asked, flustered. "No, it's today. Maybe if you hadn't dozed off, you would know," she replied. I promised to be there in 10 minutes and asked her to stall.
Ash, Conner, and I arrived at school with five minutes to spare. "Where were you?" Everleigh screeched at us. "And why are you wet?" Leah questioned. "I was out taking pictures because I felt like it, and it was raining," I explained. "You've got 15 minutes to get ready, Waters," Coach Marya told me. I thought the game was about to start... I thought. "It's called pressurization," Leah replied, maybe not only to myself. I hurried to get ready. My hair needed to dry, and quickly. I blow-dried it and got into uniform to meet the squad and the team outside.
Our school does the opening stunts differently. We cheerleaders perform with the football team. We run onto the field, waving our hands high. Then, we turn around and look at our partners. "Holy shitake mushrooms, Fisher... if he drops me, he's dead," I whisper to myself. We ran up to our partners, and I put one foot on his waiting hands. He lifts me onto his shoulders and supports my balance by holding my ankles.
"You drop me, Fisher, you're a dead guy," I hiss, "If I drop you, you're going to have a concussion," he replies. Aiden Fisher is the football team's captain, in other words, the world's most annoying person. His best friend is Everleigh; she's annoying but tolerable. "Your feet are starting to slip... how much longer?" he tells me "A few more seconds and that's why you're holding my ankles," I respond, and with that, I jump off his shoulders and in mid-jump do a front flip and land on my feet. And at the end, we wave our pom-poms in the air.
The rest of the game proceeded without any major issues. However, the announcement of the winner was delayed as they carefully reviewed the videos in slow motion. Hailey asked who we thought would win, and we all confidently replied, "Us... Duh!" Finally, the announcement came, "The winners are... The Royals!" We all jumped up, screaming and cheering. I stole a glance at Fisher, and seeing his joy melted my heart. Despite my efforts to maintain my big reputation, I couldn't help but wonder if I actually hated him... or not.
After the game, everybody decided to go to someone's house to celebrate... and Everleigh dragged us cheerleaders to join in. Without asking me, everyone agreed to celebrate at my house. My response was, "No, nope, nup, nada I don't want to do this at my place. If you want to celebrate, it's happening somewhere else, got it?"
They didn't listen, so we all ended up driving to my house, with me sitting in my car in the driver's seat, blasting Reputation because it's the album I listen to when I'm mad. Cons wasn't allowed to come either, but that's not a problem, I've got Ash. "Is this what we're listening to on the way to your house?" a voice asked me. "That's because, Fisher, you invited yourself into my car to come to my house," I snapped back. The remainder of the drive was peaceful, with me vibing the music, and I even thought I could hear Fisher singing along.
"So you guys have decided to celebrate at my house, but what are you planning to do?" I asked. "Let's be like middle schoolers again and play truth or dare," Hailey suggested. "We act like middle schoolers," Fisher and I said in unison, but it sounded wrong. "Exactly," she replied. I just stared at her dubiously. "This is going to be fun," I murmur, you can practically see the sarcasm dripping from each word.
