The Battle Has Begun
Night:
I am awakened from a dream of strange images filled with poverty and death. Though, they are already starting to disappear within my subconscious. As soon as I sit up, the pain sets in and I begin to ask myself: who else is going to try to kill me? Sighing, I look out the window near my bed, calmed by the sight of a star-filled sky. The little, peaceful moment I'm having is shattered by the voice that woke me up in the first place.
"I just sent Shane and Summer there right now! You're going to be fine, Allen," I hear Mary shout. The panic in her voice causes my own panic to rise up. What's going on?
"Do you want me to check it out?" Moon asks cautiously.
"No...lets wait," I say, just as cautiously. After a few moments of tense waiting, I open my mouth to give the order, but I am interrupted a door slamming open. Mary bursts into the room, looking frantic and furious at the same time. She throws me a handful of clothes, the force of catching it causing my stomach to hurt.
"Put it on. We're leaving," Mary orders.
"What's going on?" I demand, putting on my clothes as quickly as I can.
"The demons they've attacked headquarters. They have an entire army of leopards and possessed civilians. The clones are the only thing stopping them. How did they get such a huge army right under our noses...?" Mary explains, almost rambling. I am not only stunned by her words, but by her weakness. As if she notices my realization, she takes in a deep, shaky breath. Then, she strengths her armor and locks all the uncertainty and fear deep within her heart. Looking back up at me, I see the Mary I've become use to. Her hardened, brown eyes tell me that she welcomes death. "What are you looking at? Let's go!" she snaps. I get up and follow her out the door. Death does not scare me. It never has.
Julie:
I see pure devastation as I step out of the car, Shane and Summer close behind me. The proud building of Headquarters that once stood tall is now brought to its knees by an army of citizens. However, I can hardly call the citizens human. They run across the ground at inhuman speeds, bodies moving at odd, grotesque angles. Their once beautiful, colored eyes now a sickening white. The guards that did stay to fight are being ripped apart by them like some zombie movie. Even Allen falls prey to their blood lust. Yet, they weren't the only thing causing destruction. An equally large army of leopards terrorize the clones. Powerful jaws bite down on their fragile bodies and claws tear them apart as if they are nothing more than prey. I point my handgun at one of the leopards, saving the life of the last clone. Her eyes look at me with unconditional gratitude. I can only look at her with grief. They died before they actually got a chance to live.
"You're going to live. I'm going to make sure it," I promise her. I can almost see the corners of her mouth curling into smile. I can almost see her finally gaining real emotions.
"I know, Julie," she answers, looking at me with unconditional trust. Waking us up from the touching moment is the sound of multiple leopards growling. They stalk towards us, trapping us within a circle.
"Stop," says a feminine voice from above. Instantly the big cats halt, all their aggression gone as they lay down before us. I turn around to the owner of the voice and the cause of all this pain. The demons... The five of them look down at us from the safety of another building. The one who spoke stands up, earning a glare from me. She has a small, agile body that looks like it has the capability of a house cat, but really has the power of a loin. She gives me a smile full of razor sharp teeth and says: "These humans are my prey." Her words cause my grief to transform into rage. She killed them. She ordered the leopards to kill the clones. I want nothing more than to drag her down by her tail and inflict the same amount of pain she made the clones feel.
"Bring it on, you over-sized cat." I growl. The demon's face contorts into shock, but quickly melts into anger. Her tail lashes in annoyance and her claws flex as if imagining them digging them into my neck. She looks at another demon, asking to do just that. The other demon locks gazes with me, her yellow eyes burning into me. Her reptilian skin shines in the moonlight.
"Kill her, Alice," she says her voice indifferent.
"As you wish, Iris," the cat-like demon growls excitedly. She wastes no time jumping from her perch and lunging at me. I close my eyes, waiting for the impact of her claws, but feel nothing. Opening my eyes again, I see a fearless Mary tackling the demon. Moments later, Jermaine rushes to help her. I realize with much delight that even Delta is here to help fight. She hides on the roof of a neighboring building, gun ready to shot. Night stands a little farther away, pointing her sword at Iris. They made it...
Iris chuckles at the challenge. "If want a war Night, then, you can have one." With a flick of her wrist, two demons jump down. She follows close behind them. I gasp as I see a familiar face among the enemy. She's the woman who ran away with Shane. I feel a stab of remorse for him when I see the betrayal in his eyes. The remorse changes to disgust as I look at the last demon standing on the building. He almost looks human; besides the red eyes and the unnaturally white hair. The illusion is shattered, however, when he transforms into a giant wolf. I hesitated in the beginning to truly believe that demons exist, but now I know for sure.
The demons separate us, destroying any hope of fighting together. Shane gets cornered with Widow. Night gladly accepts the challenge of defeating Iris. Moon makes the tough decision of leaving Night and purses the demonic wolf. Summer is paired up with the last of the demons; one disguised as a man. Finally, Mary, Jermaine, and I take on Alice. Fear threatens to consume me; the thought of us fighting alone frightens me. I push my uncertainty down with determination and rage. The fate of humanity rests in our hands.
"The battle has finally begun," I hear Iris cackle.
Yes it has. Closing my eyes for just a moment, I whisper a small prayer: "God, give us strength."
