Secrets Revealed
Night:
Moon's fur is bristling as we walk down the halls. The flickering lights and echoing footsteps put my nerves on edge. Every footstep is a struggle as my instincts push me to turn around, but curiosity edges me on. This exploration makes my mind think of something else besides the memories of yesterday's love affair. I look through the window in the door, my breathe catching in my throat. From the small panel of glass I can see a girl chained to the wall, she leans into the corner of the wall. Her blond hair, matted and unwashed, pooling around her feet and hiding her face. Her mouth opens to utter one word, but from where I stand my ears hear nothing.
"Intruder," whispers a voice in my head. I stumble away from the window, my instincts screaming at me to run. Steading my breathing, I continue down the hall. I pass door after door with a sickening feeling in my stomach. Behind every door is that same girl. As I go closer to the end, a certain smell is suffocating. It fills my nostrils and awakens long forgotten warrior instincts. Blood. It confuses my senses, telling me to run, but also to fight. Each door I pass, a new voice joins in the chorus. My mind must be playing tricks on me because I hear Julie's voice, it is devoid of emotion and almost mechanic in nature. They all say in a eerie unison:
"Intruder,"
"Human,"
"She's not one of us,"
I stand in front of the last door. The smell of blood radiates from this room, bathing my senses in that scent. The girl is literally hanging from the wall, her legs dangling loosely underneath her. Her wrists are purple from the shackles that hold her. The chorus of voices suddenly stop the moment I look at her. The instinct to run has never been this strong. Her skin is a mixture of black and blue; her clothes spattered with blood. Cracks race across the surface of the wall as a massive headache brings me to my knees. Through blurred vision, I see her head lift, revealing her face.
Green eyes look back at me as if fascinated by my pain. Julie? She has the same face as Julie... A single voice speaks inside my subconscious.
"Hello, Night,"
Julie:
I searched up and down the building, but to no avail. I intentionally avoid that door, praying that Night wouldn't be there. I stop in front of the forbidden door, its open, inviting me in. My feet refuse to move, my body clenches in fear, my mind knows I can't handle looking at them. Even though my own incompetence brought them to life. I take tentative step inside. I see Night on the floor, her hands wrapped around her ears, but she can't block out the voices. No one can. Instantly upon sensing my presence, the voices return. They use my voice, my face! The excitement in their words. Why are you happy to see me? I'm a murder.
"She's back!"
"I knew she didn't hate us,"
"We missed you,"
I walk down the hall, each door bursting open as I pass, another one of my victims follows me. As I reach the end, at least thirty of them surround me. Their voices can't produce emotion, but the way their eyes sparkle almost makes me vomit. Stop looking at me like that. The leader stands over Night, she gazes at me as if I'm her best friend. Her balance is wobbly and I cringe every time I hear her leg crackle and pop. Her right leg is broken and every time she moves it erupts in cracking. Yet her face never contorts in pain. She isn't human.
"Don't worry, I've turned off the pain in my body so I can't feel anything," she reassures me in my mind.
"Stop it! Its broken, don't walk on it," I say, my hands shaking.
"If that's what you want," she answers, leaning against the wall for support.
"Stop talking like that! Stop acting like I'm not a murder," I shout, turning away.
"What's going on...?" Night growls in pain.
"Their my...clones," I say, my eyes starting to water. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
Night:
My head finally starts to clear, the pain starting to ebb away. My rational mind finds Julie's statement completely absurd, but its hard to think rationally when I'm surrounded by women with the same face. The clones surround Julie, pushing each other to get closer to her. The lead clone raises her hand, the other clones instantly give Julie some space. If the clones could smile, they'd be grinning from ear to ear. I look to Julie for more of an explanation.
"The government wanted to create a artificial Physic, but soon discovered that the human body couldn't handle the procedure. So the researchers came up with an idea. They needed my DNA map for cloning..." Julie explains, her voice trailing off. I stand to my feet. Looking at the clones condition, I know there's more to this story.
"What are you hiding from me?" I growl. Julie flinches away from my demand. She sighs as if knowing it was pointless lying. The kind woman I had met before was gone, she is replaced with a woman trying to escape a past that's apart of her. Her bright greens looks dull and tired. Her body seems weighed down by shame.
"The clones were stronger than expected. The scientists saw their potential and turned them into lab rats. Treating them less than animals, they were subject to inhuman experiments. Most of the clones died because of these experiments. Its all my fault," Julie says, her voice cracking. I look at her broken spirit and an odd feeling of understanding washes over me. I pull her into a hug, she stiffens, but slowly relaxes. Guilt. Regret. Shame. Knowing people died because of my actions. I know these feelings well.
"It's...okay," I comfort awkwardly.
"Thanks," Julie says quietly. "You know, you'll stop hating Shane when you're ready. You've made the decision to forgive, your heart will follow with time." I pull away, staring at her with surprise. My thoughts of her have changed, no longer is she a dumb follower in my mind, but someone with wisdom gained from pain.
"Thanks," I say, smiling a little. Suddenly an idea flashes in my mind. My face brightens, causing Julie to give me an odd look. I look at the clone, seeing their raw potential. Moon feels my excitement, her own excitement growing.
"What?" Julie asks, her head titling.
"I have an idea," I smile. "Eventually, we will have to fight these...demons. These clones are strong, aren't they? They can help us fight!"
