Unknown Soldier -Shingeki no Kyojin-

Year 833

I was gasping for breath after running for so long, but I had to, considering the Military Police were after me. For nothing really...all I did was steal a small loaf of bread. What's the worst they could do anyways? Make me shit my pants to get it back? Not likely.

I escaped into the underground tunnels of the Stohess District. No one comes down here really, due to lack of light, and the fact they abandoned the underground city idea; so there's nothing down here. I would stay here until it was safe to go back out...just me and my bread.

Food was sort of a luxury to me, unlike most of the high class families around here, who can eat nearly whenever they want. But I lost my home. I lost my family. I had no where to go. So I stayed in the streets, stealing whatever I needed, whenever I needed.

I suppose you are wondering what happened? I guess I can tell you...although I don't like talking about it. Consider yourself lucky, something I'm not. My parents joined the Recon Corps while I was young, about when I was ten years old maybe...I don't know; you tend to lose count of the years while you're struggling to survive. They had to go outside the walls for a mission, so I waited weeks for them to come back.  I watched the Recon Corps come back, and waited for my parents, but I didn't see them. Turns out, that bastard Commander Erwin sacrified them, for his selfish needs. I couldn't keep our home, I couldn't buy food, I couldn't buy clothes; due to my lack of money. So I moved to the streets. It was hard at first; constantly getting beat up, and not being able to gather the courage to steal for survival, but I got used to it.

Now I'm about...seventeen? Like I said, I can't keep track anymore. I've got worn out clothes that I stole; a white shirt, thin brown jacket with tears in it, and light gray pants; everything dirty and nearly torn apart. I don't even have shoes. I manage to cut my black hair with my knife, but I don't really see what I look like often so I'm not sure how it looks. Hell, I don't remember what my eyes look like. Grey? Blue? Probably one of those.

I greedily ate my bread, mainly because I didn't want a hungry rat to come and find me. Now if only I had some water...

Exiting the underground tunnel, I saw that the sun was setting. I couldn't exactly see it, considering the walls were in the way, but I could tell by the orange hue in the sky. I'm sure it's beautiful anyhow...my parents probably saw it while they were outside the walls.

My thoughts were interrupted when I heard footsteps behind me, and by the sounds of it, it was three males. I sighed and faced them, and of course; it was these three rich kids that beat me up for the hell of it. I don't exactly know how they're related, but they're probably friends...or cousins. But I really don't give a fuck.

Or at least, tried to beat me.

"Hey short stack, you know what today is, right?" The oldest one smirked.

"Hm?" was all I replied with, as I waited for his cocky response.

"It's the day I kick your ass, of course!"

"Oh, yes, how silly of me to have forgotten." I said with a bored tone.

Quickly, the one boy darted towards me, his right hand balled up into a fist. I moved to the right, before his fist made contact with me at all, and kicked the back of his knee; causing his to immediately fall. The two others ran to me to grab me from each side, but I tucked and rolled before they could...and they ran face first into each other like idiots. This was all too easy.

The oldest got up, ready to come at me again. Running to me, he attempted to round-house kick me in my face, but I grabbed his leg before he could, twisting it so he was forced to fall again. I dropped his leg, kicking him in the stomach with what strength I had left (I was still tired and hungry, it couldn't have been that bad). I glared at his two sidekicks, who just turned and ran.

"What was today again? The day you kick my ass? I think you may have your days mixed up." I said, bending down and taking his container of water.

I began walking away, with water in hand, and off to who-knows-where. Most of my nights are like this; just walk in the streets, avoid the Military Police, and steal whatever catches my eye. I opened the container and took a sip of the liquid, only to choke and find out it's not water. Stupid rich kids with their wine and shit. I spit out the liquid and tossed the container over my shoulder, and decided to start my search for something to hydrate me.

Shortly after, I could hear someone else. "I thought I beat you already..." I said before turning, expecting to see those kids again, but it wasn't. This was an older man, dressed in robes. He was most likely apart of that group that worships the Walls.

"I see you are in need of food and water." He said.

"Yeah, why do you care?" I glared.

"I have an offer for you." He smiled. "I noticed you fighting those boys back there, and I can tell you have skills. Tomorrow is the day kids around your age can start signing up for the Trainees Squad, and I can tell you'd be able to graduate in the top 10."

"I'm not joining." I said flatly.

"You haven't heard everything I was about to say. Now, after you graduate, join the Recon Corps--"

I stopped him there.

"I refuse." I said, holding back a growl.

He continued to smile though, as if he knew what I was going to say. "I understand you lost both of your parents in a mission outside of the Walls. Now listen to my deal; join the Recon Corps, and kill the Commander. If you succeed with that, without getting caught, then I will give you all the money you need to get yourself a home and food for the rest of your life."

"...Kill the Commander? Commander Erwin?" I questioned, just to make sure I had this straight.

The man nodded. "I believe you're the only one with this ability. Both of your parents were excellent soldiers; you must have gotten their talent."

"But why do you want him dead?" He must have had a reason.

"The Commander leads soldiers outside of the Walls, something no one should do. These Walls are here to protect us. I am against him and the Recon Corps, and if you take him down, then no one will travel outside of the Walls for a while longer."

I remained quiet. I know I've stolen and broken laws...but kill? I've never killed anyone before. He spoke up again. "No one else may die like how your family died."

"...I'll do it."
