Chapter 53 - Nyctophobia
"You're in charge." Parker sighed to Matteo.
"Yes." He smirked.
"Which means?"
"That I make sure nothing bad happens."
"And you also listen to Frank."
"Aw, but mum-"
"And you look after Trixie."
"I will." Matteo groaned.
"Promise."
"Look, I promise I will."
"Trixie, come on and wait for your cousins!" Parker hummed.
"Coming!" She called as she skipped downstairs.
"If anything goes wrong, you know my number." Parker sat down as she waited for Erica and the others.
A couple of minutes passed by before there was a knock at the door.
"They're here!" Trixie smiled.
Parker got up from her chair and walked over to the door, opening it.
Erica was smiling, stood in front of her children,"Parker!"
"Hi Erica." Parker opened her arms.
Erica hugged her,"I'm actually excited for this."
"A night out with just us? We've been needing it."
"For years." Erica agreed.
"Everyone knows where everything is... Any questions?" She turned to the kids.
"No, I've got this." Matteo shook his head.
"No, I've got this." Frank crossed his arms.
"Boys." Phoenix sighed.
"It's my house." Matteo pointed.
"I've been invited here, and I'm the oldest." Frank shrugged.
"You both are in charge." Parker explained to them.
"Great idea." Phoenix muttered
"Girls, any questions?" Parker fixed her earings.
"When are you coming back?" Phoenix asked quietly, gaining a small pat on her shoulder from Cedar.
"We won't be back too late, don't worry Phoe." Parker crouched down.
"We'll make sure to call you to check in." Erica assured her.
"We love you all, behave... Please call your dad's if it's before ten o'clock." Parker pointed before she rushed out.
"Yes, yes, I know." Frank rolled his eyes.
"You two, keep the arguing to a minimum." Erica pointed as she followed Parker.
"I don't argue." Matteo scoffed.
"Hate to break it to you Theo hut... You kind of do." Cedar told him.
"Do not."
"You're arguing now." Trixie held her bear.
"You're scaring tiny over there." Frank pointed.
"I'm not tiny... Am I?" Trixie ran over to the mirror.
"You're a normal height for your age, Trix." Cedar assured her,"Frank calls lots of people smaller than him tiny."
"You lot are taller." Trixie pointed
"My mums tall, that's all." Cedar sighed.
"Can we watch a movie?"
"Eh, sure." Frank shrugged,"What movies do we have, Mathew?"
Matteo narrowed his eyes at Frank,"There's Netflix, Francis."
"Well you've got the password."
Matteo crossed his arms as he went to the living room.
"Follow the leader." Frank rolled his eyes as he walked.
"Be nice, Frank." Cedar hummed.
"I am being nice, this is nice."
"Can you be... A little bit more nice?"
"Hm, I'll consider it."
"Thank you."
"I bring snacks!" Trixie ran to the kitchen.
"Thanks Trix." Phoenix smiled softly.
"What snacks do you want?"
"I like gummies."
"We got gummy bears... Worms... Gummy gums... All types." Trixie smiled.
Phoenix smiled while Frank sat down. He knew this would be a long night.
"So what are we gonna watch?" Cedar sat down.
"We'll have to wait for Tiny, she wanted to watch something." Frnk shrugged.
"Bluey!" Trixie ran through.
"I'm not watching that sh-" Matteo began.
"I like Bluey." Phoenix nodded.
"Two out of five." Matteo shrugged.
"I want to watch it too." Cedar smiled.
"Frank?" Matteo rolled his eyes.
"Put on the cartoon with the cute dogs." Frank pointed.
Matteo sighed before he grabbed the remote and turned the show on.
"Yay!" Cedar cheered.
*********************************
After a while of watching the show, Trixie had wandered off.
"Ced, can you make sure Trixie is okay?" Phoenix asked her.
"Yeah." Cedar yawned as she got up,"Trixie?"
"Up here!" Trixie shouted from her room.
"Found her." Frank rubbed his eyes.
Trixie gasped,"Ced, wanna see my new teddies?"
"I do!" Cedar grinned.
"Come up!"
"Coming!" She ran up the stairs.
"Look!" Trixie three a teddie at her.
Cedar caught it,"Woah!"
"It's a frog." Trixie clapped her hands excitedly.
"I love frogs!"
"I named him... Mr Froggles."
"He's adorable." Cedar hugged him.
"Want to come see my other ones?" Trixie opened her room door.
"Yeah!" Cedar nodded.
"They're very cool." Trixie hummed.
Just as Cedar was about to enter Trixie's room... All the power turned off.
"Ah!" Trixie screamed and ran into her room.
Cedar backed up and ran the other way, trying to escape the darkness.
"Ah shit." Matteo cursed as the TV went off.
"Theo, where do you keep the torches? Or at least a torch?" Frank asked as he stood up.
"Should be... In the kitchen."
"Kitchen." Frank slowly made his way.
"You okay Phoenix?" Matteo turned to her.
"I like the dark, its quieter." Phoenix nodded before stopping.
"I don't mind it." Matteo shrugged.
"Frank, you have to go upstairs when you get that torch!"
"Why?" Frank asked while he opened drawers.
"Because Trixie and Cedar don't like the dark."
"Oh fuck." Matteo sat up,"I'm going up first." He quickly ran up the stairs.
Frank stumbled out of the kitchen, torch in hand,"Found it."
"Upstairs." Phoenix pointed.
"Going. He hurried upstairs.
"Trixie? Cedar?" Matteo looked about.
"T-theo?" Cedar spoke softly.
"I'm here. Where are you? Where's Trixie?"
"Bedroom."
"You in there as well?"
"No.."
"Ced?" Frank walked upstairs.
"Frank?"
"I'll get my sister, you get yours." Frank told Matteo who walked into his sister's room.
"Where are you?" Frank turned on his flashlight.
"I don't know, I can't see.." Cedar shook her head.
Frank moved his flashlight around,"You see the light?"
"Mhm.."
"Go to it."
It took a few moments before Cedar wandered into the light, rubbing her puffy eyes.
Frank sighed and held onto her arm,"You okay?"
"I'm fine." She looked away from him.
"You're not fine." Frank looked at her.
"I just... I just panicked, I'll be okay."
"Come downstairs, I'll make hot cocoa." Frank nodded.
Cedar hugged him,"T-thanks."
"Oh-" Frank raised his hands up, he never usually did hugs but he... Slowly hugged Cedar back.
Cedar was a little surprised that he hugged her back but she certainly wasn't complaining.
"Now- Come on." Frank walked downstairs with her.
Cedar nodded slowly and walked downstairs with him.
*********************************
Trixie was hiding under the covers of her bed, hugging into her Teddy.
"Trixie? Are you in here?" Matteo looked around the dark room.
"No." Trixie whispered.
Matteo sighed softly,"It doesn't really work if you speak, Trixie."
"Not speaking. Go away demon."
"Trixie, it's just me. Promise." Matteo knelt down beside her bed.
"Demon." Trixie covered her eyes.
"It's Matteo, I promise." Matteo went to lift the covers.
"Tell me something only Matt would know."
"I've had two new girlfriends this month."
"Anyone would know that, you're a man whore." Trixie muttered.
"That's what Frank calls me, Man-Whore Matteo."
Trixie opened the covers slightly,"Hi Theo." She sighed.
"You alright?" He asked softly, peeking under the covers.
"Where'd the light go?"
"The power just went off, I can phone dad to come and try to fix it."
"Dad's with Uncle Nev though."
"Theyll both come if I tell them how upset you and Ced are." Matteo held out his hand.
Trixie thought for a second before she took her brothers hand
"Come on, I heard Frank saying he'd make hot cocoa." Matteo smiled.
"I like hot cocoa." Trixie hummed.
"Come on then." Matteo stood up.
"Can I bring Mr Froggles?" She grabbed her bear.
"Yes, you can bring your teddy."
"Say his name." Trixie smirked.
Matteo sighed,"Mr Froggles."
Trixie clapped her hands before the twins went downstairs. Frank was on the couch, holding Cedar who was trying her hardest not to cry.
"It's okay, Cedar." Trixie wandered over.
"N-no it's not... I promised daddy that I'd be a brave girl..."
"Here... Take Mr Froggles."
"No, you need him right now."
"No, you take him. Please."
"But Trixie-"
"No take backs." She gave her Mr Froggles.
Cedar hid her face as she squeezed Mr Froggles tightly.
"I might call my dad, see if he can get the power fixed." Matteo told Frank.
"Good idea, coming from you." Frank nodded.
"Can you make Trixie a hot cocoa?" Matteo sighed.
"I'll get started on that." Frank stood up and headed for the kitchen.
"How you feeling Pheonix?" Matteo looked over at her.
"The dark doesn't bother me." She shrugged.
"You got your cup of cocoa?"
"Mhm."
"Do you need anything?"
"Focus on them, I'm fine."
"If you say so." Matteo sighed and turned back to the girls, walking off to the side and calling Blaise.
"Hey kiddo, are you lot having fun? Behaving?" Blaise asked.
"The power went out." Matteo sighed.
"Oh, are you all okay?"
"Me, Frank and Pheonix are but... Cedar and Trixie aren't." Matteo crossed his arms as he looked at the girls.
"Right, do you need us to come over." Blaise asked.
"Yes." Matteo muttered,"Don't tell mum. She left me in charge."
"Dont worry, I won't. Well be there soon." Blaise chuckled softly.
"I'm sorry for ruining boys night."
"You always come first, Theo."
Matteo smiled softly,"I'll see you soon."
"See you soon, kid."
"Blaise is coming." Matteo told the others.
"And your hot cocoa is ready." Frank walked in.
"You made me one as well?" Matteo turned to him.
"I mean, yeah." Frank held out the cups.
"Oh Frankie, you're too kind." Matteo waved him off.
"Yeah, yeah." Frank rolled his eyes.
"Dad won't be long, don't worry girls." Matteo crouched down as he lit some candles.
Cedar nodded slowly, still hugging Mr Froggles.
*********************************
After a while, the front door opened and Blaise walked in.
"Dont worry, we have come to save the day." Blaise announced.
"Dad." Trixie jumped up.
"I'm here, sweetie." He held his arms open as Neville walked inside.
Trixie quickly ran up to Blaise and hugged him.
"You okay, Ced?" Neville used his wand to have some light.
Blaise rubbed Trixie's back and Cedar walked up to Neville.
"I tried to be brave, I really did.." She looked away.
"I just wanted to watch Bluey." Trixie muttered.
"You're always my brave girl." Neville crouched down to Cedar and hugged her.
Cedar clung onto Neville tightly, although she was still holding Mr Froggles.
"Alright. I'm gonna try and fix the lights, I'll only be outside." Blaise told them all.
"And I'll stay here, to make sure you're all alright." Neville looked around.
"Thanks dad." Cedar whispered.
"No problem, hun." Ge whispered back.
"So what were you and Blaise doing?" Frank asked.
"Oh, not much." Neville shook his head.
"Drinking?" Matteo suggested.
"Not drinking."
"Probably drinking." Frank pointed.
"Okay, a little."
"And you drove? So irresponsible." Frank scoffed.
"You needed us." Neville shook his head.
That's when all of a sudden, the lights turned back on! The TV turning back on, as if it never turned off, as Bluey returned to the screen.
"There we go." Blaise walked back inside.
"What was wrong with it?" Matteo turned.
"Some animal got to it, chewed a wire." Blaise answered.
"Was it Hewie?" Trixie groaned.
"It could've been." Blaise nodded.
"Stupid goat." Trixie mumbled.
"You're okay now, Cedar." Neville kissed her head.
"Yeah... Yeah, I'm okay now." She nodded.
"Yeah? Look, your shows back on." Neville pointed.
Cedar smiled softly.
"We can finish the episode." Trixie looked over at her.
"And Uncle Blaise will make sure the lights are definitely fixed." Phoenix pointed at him.
"Of course I will." Blaise assured them.
"Thanks."
"Uncle Neville, can you watch Bluey with us?" Trixie looked up at him.
"Of course I can." He smiled at her.
"Yay!" Trixie sat down.
