the reason
He hits the button on the machine and waits for the bottle to hit the bottom before he pulls it out and hands it to her. She gives him a smile, it's so pure, it causes his heart to skip a beat. They take a seat on one of the tables in the break room before he lets out a breath.
"You said that, it seemed like I needed it," he places his hands onto the bottle, the cold seeping through. "How could you tell?"
"I've gone through a lot," she follows his lead, her hands cupping the plastic body as she lets out a sigh. "I know how it feels to be completely lost. You feel like there's no where left to go, whether you turn left or right, you're going to fall off of a cliff and that's the end. It's almost as if... my experiences have made me into a more observant person... and now... I can tell when something is bothering someone."
"Then, I heard Luffy talking about you at my welcoming party, and I knew that my feeling was right. You seemed to be... struggling," she brushes a strand of hair behind her ear and lets out another sigh. "It's hard to describe. I... just... know when something's the matter."
He nods silently, she reminds him of somebody, but he can't quite place his finger on who. Her eyes wander around the room trying to take in as much as she can, "If you don't like it, I can sto-"
"No, that's not it. That's not it at all," he clears his throat and shakes his head. "I really enjoy that you're doing it. I actually really did need it."
She listens to the silence that surrounds them before she looks at the man again. He looks like he pushes himself to be happy for other people, he looks like he could be carefree, but at certain times, only when you're observing him closely, you can see the cracks. The broken and missing pieces that he's tried filling with random things, the objects he just found trying to hold himself together, "Do you want to talk about it?"
His eyes meet hers, time slows down, "No, not really. You'll probably think I'm crazy. Maybe you'd even hate me."
"I don't even know your name," she forces a laugh before she places her hand on his back, it's cold because of the drink he bought her, but it still brought him comfort. "Why would I hate you?"
"Because..." he stops. For once in his life, he can't actually find the right words to say. Her eyes are looking deep into him, their going so far back, that he's sure she got lost. "People just seem to after I tell them my secrets."
She retracts her hand, placing both of her hands into her lap and going into a deep meditation state, trying to figure out what to tell him, "I'm a great listener. And I promise that I won't tell anyone if you don't want me to. I'm also amazing at keeping promises."
He answers her with silence, so she feels the need to continue on, "I mean, this one time, I promised this guy over the phone that I would never look up Roger. I still to this day don't really know who he is. It-"
"What did you say your name was, again?" he looks back at her, and she seems shocked for a few seconds.
"I didn't," she gives him a smile before she holds out her hand. "But it's (Y/n)."
He pulls her into a hug. His body feels much warmer than hers, but he's not complaining. The only thing he'd complain about, is how stiff her body got, "Thank you."
"For what?" she loosens up and wraps her arms around his neck, hugging him back.
He pulls away and stares at her, taking in what the person who saved him all those years ago looks like. The chance of meeting her is one out of a whole lot more than a million, but here she is; in his life, rescuing him once again, "Because you saved me."
"I didn't do anything special," she shakes her head, still not understanding where all of this is coming from. "I was just listening to-"
"No, I'm that guy you promised. Roger is my birth father," her eyes widen slightly before she breaks out into a smile. "You saved me all those years ago."
"I'm glad that you're okay. I didn't think that I did a great job consoling you."
You don't always need a plan. Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let go, and see what happens.
