Chapter 25 : Betrayal

FINALLY, IT was time for Glyde and his team to go back home. The first thing that Glyde did was went to Hershey's house. However, he caught Hershey and his father having a serious conversation at the living room. He doesn't know if he should wait or should he leave them alone for a while. But then it was Reed who decided to leave instead.

When Reed left, Glyde gave Hershey a sweet smile and was about to hug and kiss her on its cheek. In Glyde's surprise, Hershey avoided the kiss and even stepped backwards. It made Glyde to be confuse. Did he do something wrong to make her mad at him again?

Hershey's eyes were flaming in anger, and Glyde could easily notice it. He wondered what made her be upset at him again, when he thought that they were finally okay after their phone calls and text messages during the time he was on a business trip.

"Shey?" he called her.

She answered him back with a question, "Do you desire status, power, and wealth?"

Glyde was taken aback by her sudden question and how sharp her voice was. But then being Glyde himself, he answered her frankly and truthfully. He had no intention of hiding who he is, if she ask him directly.

"I always do and still am, Hershey. What made you ask this question? Is something wrong?" He asked back.

At this moment, Glyde could not read what she is thinking anymore. She suddenly felt so distant to him. He suddenly felt afraid.

"Is that why... you entertained me the first time we met?"

Glyde became hesitant if he should answer it or not. He does not want to lie to her. He bit his lips and after a while he sighed. "Yes," he answered while looking at her eyes.

It pained him to see how Hershey's eyes were cold as she looked at him back. He noticed that there were some tears forming on her eyes. After a while, those tears fell through her cheeks. She cried silently as she looked at Glyde.

Glyde felt like this conversation would lead something worse than their conversation about marriage before. But he had no intentions in taking back what he have said, as that was his truth. If he lied, he knew Hershey would feel more betrayed and be more hurt.

He took a step forward to close the gap between them, but Hershey took another step backward.

"Then..." Glyde could feel how nervous her voice was. It felt like she was afraid to ask the next question. It seemed she was more afraid to hear his answer to her next question than the previous questions she asked him. He wondered what else made her be more worried?

She breathe deeply before she finally asked in a shaky voice, " Are you also the artist that paint the Hidden light?"

This time, Glyde got staggered. "How did you—"

"Just answer me!" She cut him off in asking back a question by using a higher voice.

"Yes," he answered her in a calm voice.

But that made Hershey felt even worse. "Fuck!" she cursed. "Then were you deceiving me all this time?!" she cried out.

This surprised Glyde and immediately tried to convince her, "No, I—"

"Don't make up any excuses!" she cuts him off again. "You told me before that you don't paint and Hidden light is not yours, but what is this? You just told me that you painted it?! You are fully well aware that I've been searching for him all this time... Yet, why..."

Glyde knew that Hershey was frustrated, upset, mad, and  confused all at the same time. Her emotions and thoughts are all over the place. Glyde knew that whatever he would say right now won't reach to her. She would not be able to understand or even comprehend whatever explanation he's gonna utter.

So he silently watched her cry. He didn't attempt to step forward anymore as he knew she'll just avoid him again. So, he waited. "Shey, calm down"

"Shut up and just go, Glyde! I don't want to listen to anything you want to say if it's just gonna be lies again. I... don't know what to believe on to your words anymore..." she sobbed as she covered her face.

Glyde's heart twitched at her words. She thought he lied, when he didn't. He didn't lie, she just didn't asked the right questions. He just didn't told the truth, but he never lied. He had no intentions in doing so, not with her.

Glyde sighed and even if he knows that it wouldn't reach her, he still said what needed to be said.

"Yes, Hershey. I entertained you because of your background. I desire power, status, and wealth. I still do. But please, don't blame this all on me. You were the one who approached me first. I wouldn't have to make any move if you didn't give any hints. I... I guess, I just took advantage of the things that was offered to me. Regarding to the painting, I did paint the Hidden Light, but it's not mine. Well, not anymore. I painted it and gave it to someone else. It's their belongings and they have all the rights to it. I told you, I don't paint. It's true. I don't paint, well not anymore. I gave up painting because I know that it wouldn't let me survive. I need money so I gave up on painting and find something that's more worth of my attention and time." he confessed.

This was the truth. 7 years ago, Christian or also known as Jack, asked Glyde for some help for his art exhibition. Christian commissioned Glyde to make any artworks when he saw how talented he was. The reason why Christian needed to ask Glyde for a favor even if he was already an artist himself, was because the deadline and opening of the art exhibition was already near, yet he still have a lot on his plate. Christian was struggling with his own personal problems and he still have a lot of pending art pieces that he haven't completed yet. Glyde wasn't supposed to accept his offer but he also needed some funds for his college fees, so he took the risk. Fortunately, Christian liked the painting.

Christian and Glyde took an agreement that Christian will be buying the painting out of Glyde. Christian even told Glyde that he would not take the credit for creating the painting but tell to everyone that he owns it. They also had a silent agreement that unless someone directly asked who painted it, they would only say that Christian or the artist "Jack" owns it. That is also probably why Christian accepted Glyde's suggestion for the name of the painting, "Hidden Light". It was because the truth of its origin were hidden and didn't come to light for as long as it could with the reason that "no one asks for the truth". It was purposely hidden but they were still willing to tell the truth if only someone asks for it.

But, Christian also views Glyde's painting in other ways. The painting holds a different meaning for the artist 'Jack'. Which also goes the same for Glyde. He painted the Hidden Light with his own meaning in mind.

"Let's talk again next time when you are all sober up," Glyde said when Hershey didn't respond.

Hershey finally looked at him, "Then... Why did you stay with me? Is it because you love me?"

Glyde got dazed. Unlike, her previous questions, this time he really doesn't know what his answer gonna be. He couldn't give any kind of respond as he just stood there.

Hershey smiled bitterly and shook her head. "I'm sorry if I was too much for you. This... I don't think, we should be together like this anymore. We know too little of each other, despite thinking that we do understand each other. I... My trust for you is too little and I know it's too rude and offensive on your part. Even if you say that you could handle me, I don't think It's right for you to keep me. I'm just being too selfish and... I want to selfless for the first time...So, let's just break up, yeah?"
