Eleven: This Is Why I Don't Socialize
Going to uni is still a little weird for me, for various reasons. After what happened in High School, I have trouble bonding with new people and stay as a result mostly by myself through out the day.
Kim Taehyung is one of the few people I managed to befriend. We aren't all that close, but he's, just like Hoseok, sociable enough to even get along with someone like me.
"God, the graphic design prof will forever be a pain in the ass." He grumbled while pushing the entry doors open for me with one arm, his weird little frog-shaped bag in the other. Today he had his sand blond hair held back with a purple satin band, giving the lucky students around us free view on his unfairly handsome face, that was covered in black coal stains after working with charcoal pencils.
"Mhmm," I agreed absentmindedly, staring down at my worn Converse while striding down the pathway outside.
"Like, he's not even the art teacher kinda annoying." Taehyung went on, "He's so... boring? Like he's an insurance salesman."
"Mhmm, yeah." I nodded, totally invested in his rambling.
"Well, I'm glad I won't see him for the rest of the week." He snorted and then looked at me expectantly.
It took me a second to realize that he wanted me to tell him wether I'd still have classes with him this week. "Oh, wait, I-" I hastily opened my bag to check my schedule, not wanting to lie to Taehyung even though I wasn't really listening to him, "Lemme see-"
I fished for my phone, pulling it out with my thumb and index finger as soon as I found it - just that it wasn't my phone.
"Oh, shit." I stared at the device in my hand.
Taehyung leaned over to look at my probably deeply panicked expression, "What?"
"This- is not my phone."
He wheezed, "No? Then whose phone is it?"
"My roommate's." I answered curtly, sighing as soon as I realized that I had no clue where Jungkook was - and, like, I couldn't text him to ask either, because I didn't have my fucking phone. Fucking amazing, really.
I rubbed a hand through my face tiredly, looking at the fake blond next to me, "Do you know where Hobi is, Tae? I think he knows where my roommate is - he probably has my phone instead."
Taehyung giggled, "Hobi's probably getting donuts at the coffeeshop - and so will I now. How did this even happen?"
I groaned, knowing exactly what happened, "We charge our phones on the same spot, that's why. He probably just grabbed the wrong one on the go."
"The same spot? D'you have these wireless chargers?"
I nodded, regretting ever having made this investment.
"Damn fancy." Tae whistled, "Let's just go to the coffee shop and look for Hoseok then."
"BAHAHAHA YOU IDIOT." Of course Hoseok would laugh at me.
"I'm telling you, he was the one who made the mistake!" I defended, "He left before me and when I left there was only one phone on the charger left!"
"M-hmm sure, and you didn't notice it till now." The idiot chirped, winking at Tae, "Whatever you say, honey."
I punched his shoulder, "Whatever, just tell me where he is."
Hobi grinned and jerked his chin towards one of the large windows, "Outside."
I turned around to where he'd looked at, horrified when I realized that my fucking roommate was surrounded by a group of men I didn't know.
"Nevermind, he can keep my phone." I answered gloomily, already ready to leave.
"Nah-ah-ah-" Hoseok grabbed me by my shoulder, turning me back around, "You'll go out there and get your god darn phone, you fool."
"But-"
"It's just Jungkook, what are you scared of?"
"It's not just Jungkook." I mumbled, looking away stubbornly.
My best friend smiled down at me, pinching my arm playfully, "Hey, look. It's no big deal. Don't look at the others, don't talk to them. Just go to Jungkook and get your phone back."
I bit my tongue, inhaling deeply, "Alright. Yes. I can do that."
"Of course you can." Hoseok grinned proudly when I turned around to go outside.
It was still pretty warm, but not too hot anymore, the weather welcoming and nice. That was a good reason to be brave and positive, no?
Seeing Jungkook stand there, I realized that I've never seen him on campus before. It was a little off putting, after having gotten to know Jungkook only as my annoying, shameless roommate. Out here he seemed... different.
Well, for starters he wasn't naked, like other times. He wore a large, olive colored shirt, leather messenger back casually thrown over his shoulder, tattooed arms flexing in the sun. Oh, and he wore glasses - the large, round kind, that made him look a lot nerdier than he actually is.
"Oi, Jungkook!" I tried to just look a him, talk to him like I usually would, but about eight heads promptly turned in my direction, "I have your... your phone." I said the last words a lot less loud and a lot less confident.
"You what?" He frowned, before realization hit him, "Oh! Right! Fuck, my bad."
"Y-Yeah." I clumsily took out the device, holding it over to him awkwardly.
He didn't react to my outstretched hand, which made it even worse, busy with rummaging through his bag for my actual phone, "Hold on a sec- it's somewhere here."
I dropped my hand again, waiting for him while trying not to look at any of the dudes behind him. I knew they were all just staring at me because I was a new face and they were curious about what I had to do with their friend. But the irrational, anxious part of me felt the need to hide away under a rock and cry.
"Who's your little friend here?" A dude with a pretty deep voice eventually addressed Jungkook.
Oh hell no.
I know this kinda sentence. Fuck, of course I do, I'm friends with Jung Hoseok - I've heard it hundreds of times before. It's a ridiculous attempt to flirt with me, one that doesn't even start with adressing me personally.
My roommate's head slowly lifted up, alarmed expression on his face, which none of the others could see since he was facing me.
"Yeah, dude, that your girlfriend or-?"
Jungkook plastered a casual smile on his face and turned around with a chuckle, "Nah, it's not like that. She's my new roommate after, you know, I got kicked out."
Most of them chuckled, recalling the mysterious events that had him kicked out of the dormitories.
"Sure she's just your roommate?" One guy ogled me stupidly, "She's cute."
I noticed Jungkook step slightly in front of me, "I'm sure she is, but dude, you really think I wanna fuck around with my roommate?"
Agreeing humming erupted around us, "Yeah, no, that'd be awkward."
I was kind of fascinated about how Jungkook handled this situation. He was obviously aware about my discomfort and willingly took over the talking for me, even trying to somehow shield me away until they lost interest and I could go.
I wish I had the talent to stay calm like that, honestly.
___
Jungkook threw a quick glance behind him. He didn't know wether it was as obvious for the others as it was for him, but she was practically hiding behind him, eyes wide like that of a scared baby deer. No, really, she looked a lot like Bambi in that moment.
He'd realized how she must've been feeling the moment Woojin had so obviously started to flirt - or, well, attempted to do so, immediately feeling the need to step in.
On the outside, he was all calm and casual but on the inside everything in him was screaming SHE'S UNCOMFORTABLE!! SHE DOESN'T WANT TO ENTERTAIN YOU GUYS!!! CAN'T YOU SEE THAT??? LEAVE HER ALONE!!1!
The willful obliviousness of men surprised him again and again.
"Well, if you don't wanna start anything with her, maybe I could-" Woojin winked at her, getting quickly nudged in the ribs by some other guy Jungkook forgot the name of.
That's exactly what Jungkook meant. Is it that hard to understand that they aren't being impressive but scary?
"Dude! She's right there!"
"So what?"
Jungkook looked around subtly, searching for an excuse to get away from them - quickly spotting Hoseok who was waving at them from inside the coffeeshop.
He squeezed Y/N's arm swiftly before speaking up, "Look, guys, Hoseok's over there! I'll quick go and say hi, 'kay?"
"Sure, whatever." Was the short answer.
Jungkook nodded and jogged over to the shop, Y/N right behind him, "Hello Hoseok, how're you-"
"Don't bother, I'm just here for Y/N." He interrupted him quickly, smiling sweetly at the girl.
"Wow, rude." Jungkook said dryly.
"You mean like your friends over there?" Y/N shot, stuffing her phone into her bag angrily.
"I- I'm sorry about them, but they aren't even my friends!"
"I don't care what they are to you, fuckface. Why'd you be so stupid and take my phone-"
"Not in here, kids." Hoseok patted both their shoulders with a diplomatic smile on his lips.
"You're right, I won't bother you anymore, you ungrateful fuck." Jungkook stuck his tongue out at her.
"Ungrateful?! YOU took MY phone!"
He waved dismissive, "See you at home, Bambi."
"Bambi?!"
