28 - Road to Recovery
"Where the hell are they?" Sam said.
"I don't know, they're your family."
"And he's your boyfriend." Sam walked through the house, finding a note in the kitchen. "Here's something."
'Dean was sick. He was upset. And like a genius he drove the car. You can guess where that got him. — John'
"I think he's in the hospital," Sam muttered.
"Shit what?" Cas said. "No. Is he okay?"
"No idea," Sam said. "We should go over there now."
Cas was already out the door.
He drove them to the hospital, speeding at dangerous speeds. Cas pretty much jumped out of the car and ran inside, up to the front desk.
"We're looking for a Dean Winchester," he said. "Is he here?"
The person nodded. "No visitors allowed, not until his condition is more stable."
"You have to let us see him," Cas said. "Please."
"I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to give permission for that."
"Is he okay?"
"I'm not sure."
Cas swore, and Sam nudged him and pointed to John and Mary in the room.
"Mom, Dad," Sam said, running over to them. "What happened?"
"We got a call at 3am," John said. "Saying Dean was found in an upturned car. They say he rounded a corner too fast, flipped the car."
"They say he's going to be fine," Mary said. "When he wakes up at least."
"Why was he driving at 3 am?" Sam asked.
"You heard him on Sunday," John said. "He wanted to see Cas. The road he was found on was halfway between our house and theirs."
"Oh god it's my fault," Cas said. "I could've gotten him killed."
"But you didn't," Mary said. "Cas looked around you. The colours are still there."
"Yeah but..." Cas stopped before saying they weren't bright. Because they were. They were as bright as they were supposed to be. "What? I don't..."
"You're not mad," Mary said. "You've forgiven him. So the colours are normal."
"But he could've died," Cas muttered.
"Don't beat yourself up over it Cas," Sam said. "It's like blaming Gabe for losing my memories because he told me to get money from you guys."
"True," Cas said. "But still."
"Everything's going to be fine, don't dwell on what's happened," Mary said. "Think of this as a new start, you and Dean can forget everything that happened and be normal again."
Cas sighed but nodded. "How long until we can see him?"
"We should be able to tomorrow," John said. "Come by after school. You should probably go home or now."
Cas nodded and trudged out to his car, driving home carefully because there's no need for another car accident.

Sam walked into school the next day, and saw Gabriel standing in a hallway, watching as he passed. Then he saw his locker.
The paper that had been used to cover it was gone, showing the bright pink flowers beneath. Sam actually laughed when he saw it, walking over to trace over the flowers. There was a note on the locker...but he didn't take it.
Their first class was science, and Gabriel walked in late. Sam didn't pay attention at all, just looked at a page that he had ripped out of his workbook. Then he folded it into a paper plane, scribbling the words 'I did this didn't I?'
He threw the paper plane at Gabriel, who looked like he was expecting it. Gabe's eyes lit up and he nodded as he saw the words written there.
Halfway through class, Sam asked to go to the bathroom. And walked towards his locker instead. It was like he didn't have control over his actions, he just knew that he had to do this. He walked up to his locker and pulled the note off.
'I don't know why I didn't just ask Bobby who owned this locker. That would've been the smarter option.'
Sam laughed as he read the note, before walking back to class. With every single note, he remembered something. He remembered the prank, he remembered the thoughts and feelings. He remembered starting to love the way Gabe was so determined to find him.
At the end of class, Gabriel sat at his desk a few minutes longer. Sam watched him for a bit before remembering. He quickly wrote out a note, that had the words 'That would've ruined my origami fun.' He had absolutely no idea why he wrote that.
Gabriel saw him looking at the note with confusion. He walked over to him, looking at the note on the table before giving Sam an almost happy look. That must mean that whatever it was, was a reference to something that happened later.
Gabe took the note with his signature smirk and a wink before leaving the room. Sam just watched him leave with wide eyes.

Cas rushed over to the hospital after school, and asked to see Dean.
"Fifth floor, room 666," the person told him, and he pretty much ran up to that room.
John and Mary were sitting in there, both looking tired. John looked like he hadn't shaved in several days.
Dean was lying on the bed, asleep. He had a few bandages and bruises, but didn't look too badly hurt.
"How is he?" Cas asked, going to sit beside Dean's bed.
"He hasn't woken," Mary said. "The doctor said there may be an issue if he doesn't wake up soon."
"What? No. That can't happen."
"He'll wake up," John said with determination. "He just needs a bit of time."
Cas looked down at Dean's sleeping face. He looked so peaceful, there was no sadness, no hurt. None of the guilt Cas had seen last time.
Cas reached down and held Dean's hand in his. "Come on Dean," he whispered. "You can't leave me now."
Time passed, and visiting hours ended. There was nothing new from Dean. Cas had sat beside his bed for all of visiting hours, holding his hand. John and Mary pretty much had to drag him away before security came for him.
As Cas walked out to the car, he saw Sam in the foyer.
"Cas," he said, running over to him. "Can you give something to Gabe for me?"
"Of course," Cas said. "What?"
Sam gave him a ping pong ball, and Cas smiled.
"You remember."
"Up until the origami moose, yeah. I'm getting more back from between then and now though, just bits and pieces, not enough to make sense."
"Well Gabriel's going to keep doing this until everything is back," Cas said.
"I get a feeling he won't need to," Sam muttered. Cas gave him a look of confusion, but shrugged it off. He was already too tired to do anything.
~~
Sam went home with John and Mary, having being at the hospital to bring them food. He'd spent any time before that setting up the ping pong after the memory appeared in his mind.
It was weird. With every prank, not only did he remember up to that prank, but he remembered something more recent as well. He could remember hair dye, an emotional story, a ferris wheel. And a few words spoken here and there.
And the memory that got to him the most, was their first kiss. It was barely a memory, just a split second flash, but he knew what it was. The feelings from that flash overwhelmed Sam. And there was a pain his heart, sadness for what he had lost.
Sam walked over to the painting on his desk again. Half the pranks made sense this time, as well as the little origami moose.
Sam sighed and laid back on his bed. "Soon Gabriel, I'll remember you soon. I can feel it."
~~(^^look, good foreshadowing)
Magical rainbow time skip to next day.
Cas walked into school with his family, who had all questioned him about Dean. He had told them what had happened, and they all seemed relieved that he had forgiven him. Except Luci who just ignored that and made Satan jokes and broke the fourth wall to Michael's annoyance.
"Gabriel," Cas called out as Gabe went to run off.
"What?" Gabe said, looking like he was in a hurry.
"This is from Sam," Cas said, holding out the ping pong ball. The happiness in Gabriel's eyes in that moment couldn't be compared to almost anything.
"He's really remembering," Gabe whispered, holding the ping pong ball as if it was the most precious thing. Then he smashed it. Well, he smashed it carefully, not destroying the origami moose inside. He pulled it out and smiled, then looked at the note inside.
'This was the first time I saw colour. Flash of gold as you saw the moose.'
Gabe's smile widened, and he looked up to see Sam watching him with a smile.
"Gabriel, I think it's possible that Sam remembers more than just what you're reenacting," Cas said.
"Well yeah, or he wouldn't be able to prank back," Gabe said.
"That's not what I mean," Cas said, sighing. "Never mind." Cas walked off, leaving Gabe confused. Gabe just shrugged and walked off to his first class.

"Cas! How's Dean?"
Cas looked up to see Charlie standing there. "He's sleeping, possibly comatose, but hopefully not."
"Wake him up then," Charlie said. "Don't comatose people respond to their loved ones talking to them?"
"I don't know, do they?" Cas said. "I'm going to visit him again after school...maybe...I'll try."
"Good," Charlie said. "I need my OTP back together." Cas just laughed softly, before looking down sadly.
"I hope he wakes up," he said quietly.
"He will," Charlie said, putting a hand on Cas's shoulder comfortingly. "Nothing can separate you two, you're soulmates."
"Thanks Charlie," Cas muttered.
"Anytime bitch," Charlie said. "Just wake up Dean for us, okay?"
Cas nodded, tears threatening to spill from his eyes.
"Oh no you're blaming yourself, don't do that."
"But—"
"Nope. Wasn't your fault. No matter what happened. It is not. Your. Fault."
Cas just gave Charlie a doubtful look.
"What'll it take for you to believe that?"
"For Dean to be okay."
"Then hurry up and wake him up."
"I wish it was that easy."

Gabriel was in art. He had a note ready in his hand. Sam was sitting over there, almost waiting.
Gabe took a deep breath. He was so worried that this would stop working, that Sam wouldn't be able to remember anymore. He was worried Sam wouldn't be able to remember feelings, and would leave him. Even though he promised...
As the bell rung, Gabe did exactly as he had done. He pulled a lollipop from his pocket, put it in his mouth before walking straight over to Sam's desk. He slammed his hands down on the desk, and Sam looked up at him.
Gabe slid the note across the table to Sam, who took it without breaking eye contact.
Now, a sudden switch to Sam's perspective.
Sam looked at Gabe's golden eyes, and couldn't help remembering the flash of a memory of their kiss. And made a decision.
Sam stood up, and Gabe gave him a look of confusion. "I know I'm changing things," Sam said softly, putting his hands on the table, mirroring Gabriel's position. "But I need to do this." He leaned forwards and pressed a gentle kiss to Gabriel's lips, who's eyes went wide with surprise before kissing back. It only lasted a few seconds before Sam pulled away, grabbing the note before walking off with a blush spreading across his face. Gabe was frozen in his spot still.
Sam opened the note as he walked. 'This was the first time I saw colours too. Your eye colour I believe. That's something I'll never forget.'
Sam smiled softly and pocketed the note.
Meanwhile Gabriel.
Gabriel was still standing there. The teacher gave him a weird look before shrugging. Eventually Gabe shook the shock away and was able to move.
He just kissed me...he must be remembering the feelings too...but he wouldn't have felt anything this soon, we only just met...so does this mean he remembers more?
Gabe walked out of the school slowly to where his family was waiting in the car. He collapsed into the backseat, his siblings giving him weird looks before driving off.
Sam remembers...everything's going to be fine, he's going to be back to normal soon...we'll be back to normal.
And with that thought, Gabriel was the happiest he had been since the crash. Except for maybe in that moment when Sam was kissing him.
