25 - A Single Man Tear

"Cas?! What happened?!"

"I...jumped out a window..."

Dean just gave him an incredulous look. "Two days. I was gone two days."

"Oh come on Deano," Gabe said. "We just got a little drunk. No big deal."

"You're underage."

"Eh."

Dean just sighed. They were at the Novak's house, the Winchester's having just come back from their road trip. Dean had wanted to go see Cas immediately, only to find his arm in a cast.

"How's Sam?" Gabriel asked quietly.

"He's remembering more," Dean said. "He thinks he's fourteen now."

"Well I guess that's..." Gabriel trailed off, looking at something behind Dean. Dean turned to see Sam standing in the doorway of the house.

"Oh Sam," Dean said. "You were supposed to stay in the car."

"Yeah no," Sam said. "Knowing you, you would take much longer than five minutes to check on your boyfriend."

Dean rolled his eyes and glanced over at Gabe who was staring at the floor.

"Gabriel," Sam said. Gabe looked up with wide eyes. "I'm...sorry for what I said in the hospital."

"It's okay Sammy, you weren't you," Gabe said softly. Sam smiled slightly, then glanced around the room.

"Dean I had to pick you up from a party here. You were drunk and miserable. And...I heard something important? I can't quite remember..."

"Wait," Dean said. "How much can you remember fully? If you can remember that, that wasn't too long ago."

"Everything until that day," Sam said. "I...I'm Sam Winchester, I'm fifteen, I'm friends with Jo, Kevin and Adam, I prank people almost as much as the Trickster does, got straight A's, and last I remember was dragging my drunken brother back from a party."

"That was a few weeks ago," Gabe said quietly. "Before me...but recent."

"But you said you couldn't remember the entire party," Dean said. "Something important?"

"Yeah, I don't know what it was."

"What about earlier that day?" Cas asked and Gabe nodded frantically. "Anything interesting?"

"No...it was just a normal school day."

"No it wasn't."

Everyone turned to look at Gabriel.

"Come on Sammy, please tell me you remember that."

"I'm sorry...I don't."

Cas looked sympathetically at his younger brother, while Dean gave a look of confusion.

"What is he missing?" Dean asked.

"The start of our relationship," Gabe muttered. "And the important thing was what escalated the war, it was what got him to continue pranking me."

"I pranked you?" Sam asked in surprise. "You're the Trickster. Why would I...?"

"Doesn't matter okay, you'll know when you remember."

Silence filled the room, which Dean broke awkwardly.

"Gabe you know how the situation is with the last few weeks. It's going to be hard."

"When was my life ever easy?" Gabe asked, standing. "I'll get through this. Besides, I have a plan." With that he walked out of the room.

"Sam you may want to prepare for the worse," Cas said. "Gabriel's plans consist of pranks. Always. You're going to get pranked."

"I don't see how getting pranked will help," Sam said.

"Actually I think I see where Gabe is headed with this," Dean said. "And for that shorty, it's actually a pretty good idea."

It was now magically a Thursday, for the days have reasons. The Novak's all arrived at school...to see both Winchester's there.

"Um."

"Don't worry Gabe," Cas said softly. "You'll be okay."

"I have classes with him. This is going to be so awkward."

"All don't worry little bro," Balthazar said. "You'll be fine. Just ignore him. Or be your normal weird self with him. You know he'll love you either way."

"But...he doesn't remember anything about me."

"That isn't necessarily true," Cas said. "Dean said he's been taking up some of your habits, like using your nicknames for people. He also bought an excessive amount of candy yesterday."

Gabriel smiled at that, and then they walked over to the Winchester's.

"Cas!" Dean yelled as he saw him, and ran over to pull him into a hug.

"Dean. Arm."

"Sorry!" Dean said, pulling back as Cas cradled his broken wrist. Sam laughed quietly and then flinched as his name was yelled.

"SAM!"

Jo, Kevin and Adam came running over to him. "Sam! You're back!" Jo said loudly.

"Do you remember everything?" Adam asked.

Sam shook his head.

"Then why are you here?" Kevin asked.

"I can remember up until a few weeks ago. The doctor said I'd be okay to go back to school."

"But..." The three of them glanced over at Gabriel, who looked away.

"Well later siblings of mine," Gabe said to his family. "I'll be going to my classes now."

Gabe walked away, but when he got inside the building he didn't head to his classes. Instead he went to the principals office.

Gabe walked straight in, and Bobby looked up at him. "Gabriel? What happened this time ya idjit?"

"Nothing yet," Gabriel said. "You know about Sam's condition right?"

"Course I do, he's like a son to me. What about it?"

"I have a plan. But I need permission to do some stuff around school."

"When have you ever asked for permission?"

"Well I wouldn't, but I need everything to be exact, so I don't want to take that chance, not when it's Sam I'm fighting for."

Bobby's expression softened and he nodded. "Whatever you need, you can do it. What exactly is it so I can tell the teachers?"

Gabriel smiled. "Well..."

~~

Sam walked up to his locker, freezing in his tracks.

"Why exactly is my locker like that?" Sam asked.

"Like what?" Jo asked, then saw his locker. "Huh. I guess Gabriel did that?"

"Covered my entire locker with paper the same colour as the locker? Why?"

"Actually it's not the same colour. But that might be the point," Jo said. "Don't take the paper down, I think I know what Gabe's doing."

Sam gave her a confused look. "Everyone seems to know, am I missing something."

"Yeah, your memories. He's recreating something, down to the exact detail."

Sam just shook his head in confusion, and then opened his locker. His books weren't in the same places as he remembered, and there were several candy wrappers in there. On the door there was a picture. It was of him and Gabe, probably taken by one of their siblings. They were curled up together on a bed, Sam's arms around Gabe while Gabe snuggled into his chest.

Sam smiled at the photo, despite not being able to remember it.

(As of this exact moment, I decided to put the Destiel feels I had planned in...I'm sorry in advance...)

"Sam hurry up, we're going to be late for class," Jo said, and Sam put the photo back in it's place.

*Magical time skip to after school*

"Clarence, you coming over?"

"Of course Meg." Meg nodded, and Cas walked over to her car with her. "I should probably tell Dean," Cas said, pulling his phone out and texting Dean.

"You do know he's really suspicious right?" Meg said. "Just tell him what we're doing. He could easily jump to the wrong conclusion."

"I'll tell him tomorrow," Cas said. "Besides, didn't you say we were almost done?"

"Yeah, you can pretty much protect yourself against those douches now."

They arrived at Meg's house and Cas threw his bag down inside as he had gotten used to doing.

"Okay," Meg said. "You can talk back to them, that's all good. But you're fighting could still improve." Cas nodded. "I'm gonna pretend to be Azazel." Cas nodded again, and Meg walked up to Cas, getting right in his face and smirking.

"Insert lousy insult here," Meg said, and then threw a punch at Cas.

Cas blocked expertly and then returned a punch to Meg. They had gotten past being gentle while practicing, as both were able to protect themselves.

Meg let Cas hit her, moving slightly away to lessen the force of the blow. "Good. Now..." She pushed Cas back, hitting him against a wall and pinning him there. "How do you get out of this?"

Cas tried to push against Meg, but she wouldn't budge. Meg pulled him away from the wall and slammed him back, gently enough not to hurt but just to show what Azazel would do to him. "Clarence, get out of this."

"How?" Cas said. Meg sighed.

"I dunno. Use your legs. You arms are trapped but you can still kick."

Cas nodded and swept one of Meg's ankles to the side, making her lose balance and almost fall to the ground. Cas caught her before she could. Meg nodded to him.

"Now, do that but try and get in a position afterwards that stops the other person from fighting back."

Meg pushed Cas against the wall again. This time as Cas swept Meg's foot out from under her, he grabbed one of her arms and pulled her around, swapping their positions so Meg was pushed against the wall.

And then something happened.

Take note of the position Cas and Meg were in. Cas had Meg pinned against the wall, and they were standing very close, closer than friends because they were playing out a fight scenario. But, that can be taken very wrongly.

Especially by one of those two peoples significant other.

"Cas?"

Cas spun around to see Dean there, his eyes wide and hurt.

"Dean! I can explain..."

You...I just...Gabe wanted you...you said you'd be here...but you...and her..." Dean backed up slowly.

"Dean I—"

"No. Don't want to hear it Castiel."

Cas flinched at the usage of his full name, and watched as Dean ran from the house.

"I told you you should've told him," Meg said. "Cas you just broke his poor little heart. You knew he'd react badly if he saw us without any context."

Cas just made a strangled sound and went to grab his stuff. "I...I have to fix this..."

"Cas he thinks you were cheating on him. You can't fix this easily."

"I have to...I can't live without him."

Cas ran out of the room and Meg watched after him.

~~

Dean drove. He just drove. He couldn't believe what he had just seen. Cas...had Meg pressed against the wall, much closer than friends would ever be...Cas cheated on him...

He wouldn't...Cas wouldn't do that.

You saw the evidence, right there. He cheated Dean.

No...he wouldn't...

But he did.

I...

Feelings rushed through Dean's head, betrayal, hurt, confusion. And pain, so much pain.

A tear fell down Dean's cheek and he swore as he wiped it away.

"This can't be happening," he muttered. "What did I do wrong, why would he do this?"

Dean drove, not paying much attention to the road. Then realized that was stupid and parked the car, since a car crashed has already been used in this book.

Dean pulled his legs up to his chest, a sob shaking through him.

Cas cheated.

Cas cheated.

Cas cheated.

The thought just rang through his head over and over, pain with every syllable.

Cas prefers Meg.

Cas doesn't want to be with you.

Cas doesn't love you.

Dean's breathing got heavier, the pain getting worse.

And then. Anger. And a feeling of need to put Cas through the same pain.

A memory appeared in his head. A few weeks ago, of Lisa. She said she'd be waiting if he wanted a casual relationship without a soulmate...and...well if that wouldn't hurt Cas, then what would?

Dean pulled out his phone and shot a quick text to Lisa, telling her he'd be over in a few minutes, then started up the Impala again.

If Cas doesn't want me, then I'll show him that I don't want him.

(I'm sorry :( )

~~

Sam sat on his bed, staring at the painting. It was him and Gabe, that much was obvious. And it was probably things they did. But he couldn't remember any of it.

There was one of his locker, except it was painted with a pink floral pattern. There was multiple of notes being passed between the two.

Sam traced a finger over the outlines, surprised when he felt a tear run down his cheek. He wiped it away. Why am I crying? he thought to himself. This must mean so much...oh Gabe I'm sorry.

As Sam put the painting back on its spot on his desk, he looked at a certain picture. It was of Gabriel with a shocked expression as science blew up in his face. Sam smiled slightly.

"I'll remember you Gabriel Novak," Sam muttered. "I swear on my life, I'll remember you."
