23 - Memories

I WILL FIX THIS

Dean heard Gabe run off and rushed over to Sam, pushing him roughly against a wall.

"The hell is wrong with you?!" he shouted. Sam scowled at him.

"Oh I don't know, maybe I have no memory?!" Sam shouted back at him. "How do you think I feel right now? I just woke up around all these strange people, and a guy is claiming to be my soulmate."

"You're saying that like it's a crime," Dean growled. Sam simply shrugged.

"To some people it is Deano."

Dean froze. That was Gabriel's nickname for him. Gabriel's. Not Sam's.

"What did I say?" Sam asked, seeing Dean's reaction.

"Nothing," Dean said. Sam shrugged again, and walked back into the hospital room. Dean glared after him before turning on his heel, going to comfort Gabriel instead of tending to his mess of a brother.

~~
Gabriel ran into the house, slamming every door possible behind him. Of course, being the Novak house, this wasn't exactly new behaviour. But when everyone heard the quiet sobs coming from Gabe's room they all went to him in concern.

"Gabriel," Lucifer said, slowly opening the door. "Brother. What happened?"

"I don't want to talk about it," Gabriel muttered into his sleeve. He was curled up in a ball on his bed.

"Gabey come on," Balth said. "Sam's alive isn't he?"

"May as well not be."

Michael walked into the room, sitting on the edge of Gabriel's bed and putting an arm around him. "Gabriel. Tell us what happened."

Gabriel was silent for a few moments before muttering one word.

"What was that?" Anna asked.

"I said amnesia," Gabriel repeated. "And it's not just amnesia..."

The siblings around him all winced and gave him sympathetic looks. Gabe took one glance around and scowled.

"I don't want your sympathy. You know what happened, now leave me the hell alone." His voice was low and angry, with a tone of warning, which got all his siblings out of his room pretty much immediately.

As they left, Gabriel curled into a tighter ball, tears falling freely from his eyes. Each word that Sam had said rung through his head and stabbed a dagger into his heart.

"Sammy why?" he murmured. "Why are you acting like this?"

Moments later Cas walked into the room, fuming. "I swear if he dares to do anything like this again I'll—"

"Cassie stop," Gabe muttered. "Leave him alone. It wasn't his fault."

Cas breathed deeply for a few moments, calming himself. "Dean said they took Sam home. They think the familiarity will help bring some of his memories back." Gabe watched carefully as Castiel spoke.

"You're hiding something."

Cas sighed. "The doctors gave a prediction for Sam's memories. They said he'll regain his earlier memories easiest...and his most recent ones have a chance not to come back."

"But...his most recent ones...are me..."

Cas nodded sadly. "I'm sorry Gabe."

Gabe made a choked sound before burying his head in his arms again. Cas sighed and pulled Gabe into a hug as he began to cry.

~~
Dean glanced over as Sam walked around the house, looking carefully at everything. When Sam was showing no signs of memories, Dean walked up to his room, collapsing down on his bed.

He pulled out his phone and called Cas, waiting two rings before Cas picked up.

"Hello Dean."

"Hey Cas. How's Gabe?"

"Not doing too well. Sam?"

"Looking around like an idiot who's never seen the world before. He's likely to remember something soon at least, doctors said it wasn't that bad."

"I told Gabriel about the more recent memory issue...he's doing worse."

"Cas you shouldn't have said anything."

"I couldn't lie to him. He deserved to know the truth."

"True..."

"Look I'm going to go look after Gabe, try and gets Sam's memories started."

"Okay. Later Cas."

"Bye Dean."

Dean hung up the phone, and threw it lazily across the room. He sighed and then heaved himself off the bed, walking out to where Sam was looking at the room with a confused expression.

"Dean?" he asked as he saw Dean walk in. Except the cruel homophobic Sam was gone. "I...I remember this...when we were younger we would play in here..."

"You...how much do you remember?" Dean asked, running over to his younger brother.

"The last thing I remember is when I was seven..."

"Oh thank god," Dean muttered. "That's a good start."

"But I...Gabriel..."

"Wait you remember him?"

"No, I remember what happened in the hospital. And Mum was there, but she's..."

Dean smiled slightly. "She's alive Sammy. Mum's alive."

Sam returned the smile, but then it dropped almost immediately. "Why did I say that to Gabriel?"

"Because you had no memories," Dean said. "Our memories make us who we are...so you weren't yourself..."

"But he was my soulmate..."

"And you were homophobic."

"Well I'm not homophobic...but am I gay?"

Dean was silent before shaking his head. "Nope, I am not having this talk with you. Get your memories back bitch."

"Fine jerk."

Dean smiled as Sam remembered the correct response. This was weird, it was Sam's teenage body with his seven year old personality.

"I want to apologize to Gabriel."

"That...might not be a good idea," Dean said slowly. "He's going to want back the Sam that he knows. And that Sam is a lot different from you now."

Sam sighed but nodded.

~~

Gabriel trudged into school, the voices and people around him barely even processing. His family walked in front of him, shooting him worried looks.

He made his way to his locker, and opened it to find the painting Sam had given him. That just gave him a whole bunch of feelings so he shut his locker and walked off to class without his books.

"Gabriel!"

He turned to see Dean running towards him. Dean stopped, breathing heavily for a few moments.

"Out of shape much Dean?" Gabe asked.

"A little," Dean muttered. "Sam has started recovering memories. He can remember up until he was seven."

Gabe brightened a little bit at that.

"And...he said he's sorry...for the whole hospital thing...he's not so homophobic anymore, but doesn't think he's gay either..."

"Well...that's a start I guess," Gabriel said. Dean nodded.

"Gotta go to class, see ya Gabriel."

"Bye," Gabe muttered.

~~

Cas waited with Charlie and Benny at lunch, but Dean never showed up. In fact, he had barely seen Dean all day. Dean was constantly vanishing and on his phone. Cas knew he was just looking out for Sam, but it was a bit lonely without him.

"Aw don't worry Cas," Charlie said. "Dean doesn't mean to do this. He's just an idiot."

Cas just nodded silently.

"You know he's probably gone home during lunch," Benny said. "Probably won't come back either."

Cas sighed and stood up, putting his bag over his shoulder. "I'm going to try and study then." Charlie and Benny nodded, and Cas walked off.

Except he got stopped.

"Well look who it is."

Cas stopped and closed his eyes as he heard Azazel's voice. He opened them and turned to face the annoying idiot.

"What do you want?" Cas spat.

"Oh, it appears you've got some fire in you," Azazel said. "Tell me, how's your little brother doing? And his dysfunctional boyfriend? Oh wait, they're not together anymore, are they?"

"Shut up Azazel," Cas said. "I don't need your shit right now."

Azazel scowled, and drew his fist back to punch Cas. Cas, having learnt from Meg, managed to block the punch by grabbing Azazel's arm and twisting it around his back.

Azazel was shocked at first, and then pulled himself from Cas's grip, scowling. "You'll pay for this."

"In your dreams," Cas muttered, turning to walk away with Azazel glaring after him.

~~

Dean sat across from Sam in the room, watching as Sam looked through the pictures in the photo album.

"Anything?" Dean asked.

"No," Sam said. "You always were impatient weren't you? Guess that didn't change."

"Hell no. Now hurry up and remember."

"Why do you want me to remember so bad?"

"My boyfriends brother is bordering on depression because you can't remember. I'd rather that not happen."

Sam nodded. "Well it's not like I can just trigger it Dean."

Dean sighed. "Maybe we should try something else. Like..." He thought for a few moments before brightening. "This should get you to remember something at least."

He walked over and turned the tv on, opening Netflix and going to the most recent Doctor Who episode.

"What's this?" Sam asked.

"Your favourite show. Now shut up and watch."

And so they watched Doctor Who, like they had done many times before.

"Dude. Cliffhanger. And that mention of David Tennant at the start...feels."

Dean smiled at Sam. "And who would David Tennant be?"

"The tenth Doctor," Sam said. "Obviously. Oh. Wait."

Dean smiled wider. "How much?"

"Well I can remember all of Doctor Who...and up to where I was twelve I think?"

Dean fist pumped and Sam just smiled and shook his head.

"Oh and yeah, I'm hella gay."

Dean just laughed and pulled his brother into a hug, pretty much crushing him. "Three years Sammy, that's all you have left to remember."

"Then can I talk to Gabe?"

Dean was silent for a few moments, Sam's question processing in his mind. There was something...

"You just said Gabe."

"Yeah...that's Gabriel's nickname right?"

"Yeah but you didn't know that."

"Oh...huh."

"And yesterday you called me Deano, that's Gabriel's name for me. You seem to be subconsciously remembering him already."

Sam smiled slightly then frowned. "Didn't the doctor say that my most recent memories would be hardest to remember?"

"That's what I'm worried about," Dean said. "We'll get them back, don't worry."

Sam nodded. "I'm going to go to sleep now, night Dean."

"Dude it's only like 9."

"And I have the mind of a twelve year old."

Dean laughed, and Sam walked to what he had been told was his room. It seemed strange and unfamiliar, different from how he remembered his room currently.

There was also one thing, sitting on his desk. It was a painting, brilliantly done. It seemed to be Sam and Gabriel, in a bunch of different scenarios.

Sam traced lightly over some of the lines with his fingers. This had meant something to him, he could tell. But he had no idea what.

~~

Cas walked into the room where Gabe was sitting miserably. "Stop moping would you?"

"Why?" Gabe muttered.

"Sam is remembering more. Including all of Doctor Who."

Gabe chuckled slightly at that. "Of course that's what he would remember."

"Dean also said he likes looking at the painting you gave him."

Gabe went silent and looked down, remembering what the painting was of. Cas saw his change in mood and sighed.

"Gabriel, don't worry. He'll remember."

"Will he?" Luci said, walking into the room. "He can't remember too soon, the author needs a storyline to write about."

"For Chuck's sake Luci," Michael said. "Stop breaking the wall. Seriously." Michael dragged Luci away.

"I'm starting to question their sanity," Gabe stated. "I swear Luci has some sort of disorder."

"I concur," Cas said. "Anyway Gabriel, just give Sam time. Everything can be fixed with time."

"I hope so," Gabriel muttered.

"Dean also said he might be back at school soon...he said as soon as he remembers up to 14 he's allowed back."

"So...I'll see him again."

"Yeah."

An idea suddenly came to Gabriel, and he smiled softly. "I'll get him to remember. And I know exactly how..."

~~

There, I slightly fixed it. Fun fact, the whole homophobic thing last chapter was not planned and wasn't supposed to happen...it just sorta wrote itself.

Anyway, I have a cool way for Sam to remember Gabriel...so bear with me, I just need time :P

So this chapter was up for about an hour and then I realized I said David Tennant was the eleventh doctor, not the tenth....quite disappointed in myself there.

And I was supposed to be studying for exams...which are all this week...I've done half the study, I just have to do the other half now...greeaaaattt.

You guys can all have a cupcake since there won't be another update for a week *gives you all cupcakes*
