22 - You Promised You'd Always Be There

Warning you now...this is probably more feelsy than anything else in this book so far.

Gabriel dropped everything and ran out of the store, towards where Sam had been going. Everything felt like it was going in slow motion, the only sound being Gabe's racing heart. Everything around him was deathly grey, increasing his panic.

There was people yelling, cars pulled over, ambulance sirens in the distance. But Gabe payed attention to none of it as he ran over to Sam's body in the middle of the road.

He skidded down beside Sam, went to cradle his soulmates head only to see blood pouring from it.

"What happened?!" he yelled, oblivious to the people trying to get him away.

From all the talk around him he could pick up the words 'car crash', which it seemed Sam had been in the middle of.

The ambulance pulled up and people crowded around Sam, pushing Gabriel away. Gabriel tried to fight them but they wouldn't let him near Sammy.

Minutes later the ambulance was pulling away and people were starting to disperse. Gabriel fell to his knees in the middle of the road, in shock. The grey world around him swirled, everything mixing together.

"No," he muttered, his voice rough and croaky. "This can't be happening. It's just another nightmare."

Gabriel heard shouts and someone pulled him off the road as a car came driving past. Gabriel didn't bother to look up.

"Gabriel?" At the sound of his brothers voice, Gabe glanced upwards. "What happened? Dean and I heard the ambulance and came rushing out, only to find you in the middle of the road."

"Gabe where's Sammy?" Dean asked. Gabe opened his mouth to speak but no words came out. "Gabriel spit it out, where the hell is my little brother?"

"There was a car crash," Gabe whispered. "Sammy...he..."

Dean went pale and Cas immediately walked away. A few moments later he reappeared with the Impala.

"Hurry up," Cas said, as Dean and Gabe stood there both in shock.

The car ride was silent, all three of them in too much shock to really talk. Dean came out of his trance towards the end though.

"Gabriel," he said slowly and quietly. "Can you...still...see colours?"

Gabriel said nothing in reply, and that was enough of an answer for Dean, who's eyes began to fill with tears.

As they arrived at the hospital, Cas went to ask about Sam while Dean and Gabe sat down, still in too much shock.

Gabriel was staring off at a painting on the wall when colours appeared so suddenly he jumped.

"Gabriel?" Dean asked.

"Colours," Gabe said, his eyes wide. "Colours Deano, he's alive!" A moment later the colours switched back to grey and Gabe swore.

Cas walked over then. "He's in surgery," he said. "And they're not sure if he's going to live."

"Well at least we'll know," Dean said, looking at Gabriel.

The colours spiked back up, and then faded again. Gabriel sat down, panting wildy and his heart racing as he watched the colours appear and disappear, in correspondence to his soulmates life.

It felt like hours that they waited, and Gabriel wouldn't settle the entire time. When finally the colours stopped fading and stayed at a steady midway, Dean and Cas relaxed, but Gabriel was still panicking.

"Gabriel," Cas said after talking to a nurse again. "He's okay. The surgery was a success. We won't be allowed to visit him until tomorrow though."

"If it was a success then why aren't the colours right?" Gabe asked.

"What do you mean?" Dean asked.

"They're only half here. Nothing is bright enough."

"Maybe they'll be back when he's fully healed," Cas suggested. "Gabe, try to relax. Everything is going to be fine."

"How can I believe that right now?" Gabe near yelled. "After all the crap I've been through, why should this work out for me?!"

Cas sighed and shook his head, walking outside. Dean gave Gabe a sad look before following. After taking a few deep breaths Gabriel followed behind them both.

Dean trudged into the house, and John and Mary immediately ran up to him.

"Dean what happened?" Mary asked. "We got a call from the hospital."

"They said Sam had to have surgery," John said. "Is he okay?"

"He was hit by a car," Dean muttered. "He got out of surgery okay, but Gabriel still thinks there's something wrong."

"Why?" Mary asked.

"The colours aren't bright enough."

John and Mary both gave sad and knowing looks. "Sometimes if someone's close to death or not them self that can happen," Mary said. "It happened multiple times with us."

"Not yourself?"

"Mental issues, things like that."

Dean did a sharp intake of air. "You don't think Sam got brain damage do you?"

"It's a possibility," John said sadly.

A sob shook through Dean but he held it down, instead trudging off to his room. "I'm going to go to sleep early tonight," he muttered quietly, and his parents nodded.

Gabriel was lying on his bed, staring up at the dull ceiling. Everything was dull, not as bright as he had come accustomed to the past few weeks.

He rolled off the bed and grabbed his laptop, turning it on and going to the internet. He begun searching about soulmates and loss of colour.

There was of course many results. After all, humanity had had this weird thing since the beginning. But there was still too much unknown. Because no one could figure out how it worked.

Gabriel scrolled until he found something about losing colours. It explained a bunch of stuff, including loss of brightness in colours.

"The loss of brightness usually comes from one of the pair being in bad health," Gabriel read aloud. "It means that there is some issue, usually within the mind, breaking the pair apart."

Gabriel swore and shut his laptop. He climbed back into his bed, thinking about Sammy.

"Sam, please be okay," he said quietly, praying to the angels for his soulmate.

~~

Dean ran into the hospital, asking where Sam's room was quickly. The nurse told him, Room 221, and Dean ran up there, leaving his parents trailing behind him.

He pretty much burst into the room, and saw Sam sitting up on the bed, looking around with almost a look of confusion.

"Oh Sammy," Dean said, walking forward to pull his brother into a hug. "Thank all the non-existent gods."

Sam didn't return the hug. "Um..." he said awkwardly. Dean pulled away and looked at him with confusion.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

"I'm really sorry," Sam said, "but who are you?"

Dean froze. "Sam...I'm your brother, Dean."

"Am I Sam?" he asked, and Dean swore and called for a nurse.

After a quick check up, the doctors confirmed that Sam had amnesia. It was the kind likely to come back with time, but for now Sam didn't know anything. It appeared though that he could remember basics, just not specifics like who people were.

John, Mary and Dean sat around Sam's bed as he looked at them with confusion.

"Sam," John said. "That's your name, Samuel Winchester." Sam nodded slowly. "I'm John Winchester, and this is Mary Winchester. We're your parents."

"And I'm Dean Winchester," Dean said. "Your older brother."

"Okay," Sam said slowly. "How old am I?"

"15," Dean said. "Four years younger than me." Sam nodded slowly again. "You're a year ahead in school, have a bunch of awesome friends and you're dating an annoying shorty."

"Is she my soulmate?" Sam asked. All three members of his family tensed at the word she.

"Yes," Dean said, wincing as he said it. "They won't deal well with this, it'd probably be best to tell them before they came in."

Sam nodded. "So that's why I can see colours. They're quite dull though."

"Probably due to your memory loss," Mary said. "It'll light up again with time."

"I hope so," Sam said. "Any important facts about you guys?"

"I have a boyfriend," Dean said immediately and Sam gave him a look of confusion and...disgust?

"A boyfriend? Really? My brother is gay?"

Silence filled the room, broken by Dean. "Yes. I am. Got anything against it?"

"Yeah a bit."

Again, silence.

"Is there something I'm missing here?" Sam asked.

"Sammy," Dean said slowly. "Your soulmate is a guy."

Sam was silent for a moment. "Hell no."

Dean put his face in his hands and shook his head. "This isn't good."

There was a knock on the door, and Dean walked over to get it, seeing Cas there. He left the room, closing the door behind him.

"How is he?" Cas asked.

"Amnesia," Dean said. "Goddamn amnesia."

Cas gave a sad look. "How bad?"

"He doesn't even remember his family," Dean said. "But that's not even the worst of it."

"What could be worse?" Cas asked.

"He's homophobic."

"But...Gabriel..." Cas said.

"I know," Dean said. "We can't let Gabriel see him, it won't end well at all. At least wait until he starts getting his memories back." Cas nodded in agreement. "When will he be coming over?"

"He's still got classes," Cas said. "So in a few hours. I didn't have any classes left so I decided to visit early." Dean nodded.

"What are we going to do?" he asked. "Gabriel..."

"He's going to be torn by this," Cas finished. "We can't let him see Sam be homophobic, that'll really break him."

"Well that's kinda hard," Dean said. "I told him I had a boyfriend and..." Cas just narrowed his eyes and then walked into the room.

"Hello Sam," Cas said as they looked up at him. "I'm Castiel Novak."

"And how exactly do I know you?" Sam asked.

"I'm Dean's boyfriend," Cas said bluntly. Sam was silent, as if thinking about how to react. Then he muttered something under his breath.

"Sammy what did you just say?" Dean asked.

"Nothing," Sam replied. Dean narrowed his eyes but didn't push it. "So Castiel, why are you contaminating my brother?"

"I'm not," Castiel said. "He was already bi. I didn't do anything."

"Besides," Dean said. "It's not like we had a choice. Soulmates."

"Soulmates still have a choice," Sam said. "I'm choosing not to be with mine."

With that Cas leaped forward and put a hand to Sam's throat, pushing him back against the headboard.

"If you dare hurt Gabriel," Castiel hissed, "you'll wish you'd died in that car crash."

"Woah Cas," Dean said. "Come on."

"Well at least he'd be silent then, with his homophobic thoughts," John muttered.

Cas let go, glaring at Sam before leaving the room. Sam gave him a confused look then turned to Dean.

"Why did he get so mad? Is he friends with...Gabriel?"

"They're brothers," Dean said. "Adopted brothers, but still brothers."

Sam nodded. "Then his reaction was understandable."

For the next few hours the family helped Sam with any questions he had, getting some basic knowledge back into his head. The doctor said that he'd probably start regaining memories within a few hours, and doing familiar stuff with him would help.

~~

Gabriel ran up to the door, only to see Dean standing outside, blocking it. "Deano let me see him."

"Trust me Gabriel," Dean said. "You really don't want to."

"No I really think I do," Gabe said, trying to move past Dean.

"Gabriel..." Dean sighed. "This is hard to say, even for me. Sam has brain damage...he's got amnesia."

Gabriel froze. "How much can he remember?"

"Only the basics, no people or anything."

"Well...he has to like me right, I mean we're soulmates."

"That's the thing..." Dean said, wincing. At that moment the door opened and Sam appeared.

"Dean who are you talking to?" he asked, eyeing Gabriel. Gabriel stood frozen. It was Sam, it was definitely him...but he seemed off.

"This...is..." Dean trailed off and gave Gabe a look. Gabe understood that he meant not to say his name, but couldn't say a made up name either. He was frozen.

"You're short," Sam stated, looking at Gabriel. Gabe smiled the tiniest bit, and then Sam's eyes went wide. "Oh. You're Gabriel," he said bluntly, without a hint of emotion.

Dean winced and Gabriel nodded. "Sam," Dean said. "Please don't."

"Please don't what Dean?" Sam said almost angrily. "Say I don't want to be with him? Well I wouldn't want to lie now would I?"

And in that moment Gabriel's heart broke. "But..." he stuttered out.

"Well I'm sorry Gabriel," Sam said. "I may have no memories, but I'm sure as hell not gay."

Gabriel bit his lip, emotions swirling around inside of him. Sadness, heartbreak, anger. "You weren't thinking that when we first kissed."

"Gabe don't make it worse," Dean said, awkwardly standing off to the side.

"Well I guess I wasn't in my right mind then," Sam snarled. "Maybe the car hitting me was a blessing."

"You can't..." Gabe said. "Why? Why the hell are you doing this to me?!" Gabriel was starting to panic, the memories of every he had ever lost coming back. Sam seemed to realize that this was cutting a bit deeper than it should. He shot a desperate look at Dean but Dean just turned and left.

"Gabriel look," Sam started.

"No," Gabriel cut him off. "You promised me Sammy. You promised you would always be here for me. You promised this wouldn't be like everything else. You can't do this to me."

"I'm sorry Gabriel," Sam said softly. "But I already did." Gabriel bit his lip again, his breathing heavy and tears shining in his eyes. Without another word he turned and ran off, leaving Sam standing in the doorway. Leaving his broken heart in pieces around where Sam stood.

Okay, so the reason I'm putting this sorta stuff in is to give me a storyline, coz I can't right with no end goal. But just saying, I don't have the heart for sad endings. And yeah...sorry...

So my art assignment, which is a collage, has become entirely supernatural based...oops :D It is now a collage of Spn pics, making up a person with wings...and I got PVA glue everywhere.

Also we actually started exam revision today...O_O. I have no idea what to expect from exams, a little bit freaking out. Oh and my brother has his first year 12 exam tomorrow, that's just creepy.
