CHAPTER 4
MARCH 4, 2014
Charlotte, North Carolina
10:57 p.m.
We both sat on the edge of a skyscraper. The streets had been clear so far and we had a few hours to kill. We sat in silence for a long time.
"How's school?" I asked trying to make conversation.
"Good," she said. We sat in silence for a little bit longer, then I chuckled.
"What?" She asked.
"That wasn't the conversation I had in mind," I said.
"What do you me-," the buzz of the com interrupted her.
"Shadow, you there?" Landon asked.
"Talk," I said standing up, and putting my hand to my ear.
"So I used the hair sample you took from the thing and ran it through the data base on creatures we've ran into in the past. I wanted to see if it matched any other shape shifters we've killed."
"And?"
" I got a match but not a shape shifter."
" What was it?" I asked.
" What was the first creature we faced that brought this team together?" He asked.
"Wendigo," I whispered. A Wendigo is a creature that eats human hearts. They all come about the same way. A person becomes a cannibal out of need or just because. They eat so much of it that they need it to survive. Normal food won't sustain them anymore. They turn into a monster. Their skin stretches across they're body and reveals their bones. There eyes are pushed back into their sockets and are pitch black. They can mimic human voices. Their claws are long and sharp.
" Wait a minute Wendigos don't have fur," Alisa said.
"Would you guys shut up, and let me finish," Landon said. " It didn't make any since to me so I ran another scan and this time it came up with another match. A Werewolf."
"So this thing's a cross between a shape shifter, a Wendigo, and a Werewolf?" Alisa asked.
"Right, and who do we know that has the power, money, resources, and likes to play Frankien Stein?" Landon asked.
"Spentrol," Alisa and I said simultaneously. We looked at each other confused.
"How did he get out of prison?" I asked.
"He was let out for good behavior," Landon said.
"Really?" Alisa asked.
"Of course not, the guys a few fries short of a Happy meal. According to the records Macgyver took his toilet apart and made a knife. Took out eight guards snapped 3 of their necks," Landon said.
"When did he learn to do that?" Also asked
"It's not like there's much else to do in there," I said.
"Yeah, especially when scraper's his cell mate," Landon added. "Speaking of whic-"
"Scraper got out too," I interrupted. Scraper was a very dangerous criminal. He didn't have any powers, but he didn't need them. He was an expert hand-to-hand combatant. He's also the world's best shooter. He prides himself on never missing a shot. If he trained and helped Spentrol escape then we could have serious trouble.
"If he helped Spentrol escape then they could be working together," Alisa said.
"Great," I said, " that's the last thing we need. Spentrol's a level B threat already. If Scraper taught him anything he knows then he could become a level A threat."
"Just like Scraper," Landon said finishing my sentence.
"What's the plan?" Alisa asked. I thought for a moment. I was running all of the data we've collected on Scraper and Spentrol over the years.
"Stripton bullivard. That's where the Spentrol's lackies hang out. Landon, tell the others what you told us. Alisa and I are gonna visit some old friends," I said looking at her. We both smiled then jumped off the roof.
March 4th, 2014
Stripton Bullivard
11:03 p.m.
" Help! Help!" A woman yelled from the alley. She was surrounded by three of Spentrol's guys with knives.
" Give me the money now!" One of them said.
" I don't think that'll be necessary," I said leaning against a wall. They all turned around and they're eyes got wide.
" I- it's y- you," the guy said stuttering.
" I was in the neighborhood. Figured I'd swing by. Glad to see your arm's healed Tim. That was a nasty fall you had. Let her go or it'll happen again," I said. They stepped away from her, and she ran off.
"W- what do you want?" Tim asked.
"Information," I said walking up to him, "hopefully you can help me. Spentrol and Scraper escaped. Has Spentrol contacted you?"
"N- no," he said nervously. He kept glancing behind us. Something wasn't right. I heard a click.
"Get down!" I yelled at Spark. She ducked and so did I. BANG! I peeked my head up and looked at the direction of the gun shot. I saw a man running on top of the roof. Tim and the two other guys ran the other way. " You follow the stooges. I've got the sniper," I said running toward the the building he was on. I hit a button on my chest and a quiver with arrows unfolded and strapped on to my back. I hit another button on my wrist and a bow unfolded. I grab a grappling arrow from the quiver, knocked it on the bow, then shot it at the Wall. The rope repelled and I climbed on the roof. The sniper was still running. I grabbed an arrow from the quiver and knocked it on the bow, then fired. The arrow flew in the air toward him, then released a net. It wrapped around the guy's legs and he fell with a thud. I walked up to him. He wiggled around trying to escape. He wore tennis shoes, blue jeans, a coat with a hood and a mask. I turned on the voice modulater. I ripped off the mask and pulled the hood off. He had a long face and curly black hair. I picked him up and held him over the roof.
"Where is Spentrol?" I demanded in a deep voice. He laughed.
"Why would I tell you?" He asked
"Cause if you don't you'll die."
" Your a hero. You won't kill me." He was right. He called my bluff. I needed to bluff harder. I dropped him off the roof. I jumped down after him. I caught him by the shirt, then pulled out my grappling gun and shot it at the roof. We swung, and I threw him up against the wall, then I threw him on the roof and jumped onto it after him. He was on his stomach trying to crawl away. I picked him up and put him over the roof again.
"Where is he!" I yelled.
"He's in th-" BAM! I pulled him over the roof and dropped him. I picked up my bow, and knocked an arrow looking around. I didn't see anything. I looked back at the guy and he had a bullet between his eyes. A stream of dark red blood trickled down is face and off his cheek where it formed a puddle.
"Shadow? You there?" Spark asked in my ear. "I heard a gun shot. I wanted to make sure your okay."
"Yeah, I'm fine, but the snipers dead. He was getting ready to tell me where Spentrol was," I said.
"Now you'll never know. It's a shame, isn't it?" A voice asked from behind. I turned around. He wore a full body suit the was completely black spandex. He had two swords in sheaths on his back, two guns in holsters on his thighs and ankle, and knives on a sash across his chest. It was Scraper.I knocked my arrow on the bow, and aimed it at him.
"Calm down son, I just want to talk. We'll have plenty of time to fight soon enough," he said calmly.
"Don't call me son," I said gritting my teeth.
"Why not?" He asked with his hands behind his back. " I made you didn't I? I drove you to become a hero, I use that term loosly. Made you who you are Cody."
"You killed my parents!" I screamed.
"You didn't make me. You destroyed me! You ruined my life, and took my parents! And I'm going to put you right back in that cell at the aslyum!"
"Quit being so dramatic. You're aunt and uncle took you in," he said.
" You son of a bi-"
" Such profanity. Did your dad teach you that?"
I dropped the bow and arrow. I ran to him, and swung at his face. He dodged, then tripped me. I hit the ground. He tried to step on me, but I rolled out of the way. I jumped to my feet as he swung at me. I blocked it, then pushed him back. I ran at him and tried to kick him. He rolled out of the way. He pulled a gun out the holster and pointed it straight at my head. " Can we get back to our conversation?" He asked.
" Why don't you kill me?" I demanded.
" It simply isn't time for that yet. You're still needed. But if you get in my way again I won't hesitate. Now as I was saying we need to talk." A bright light flashed in front of me. As my eyes adjusted I noticed that Scraper had flown across the roof. I looked the other direction and Spark was standing there.
" Are you okay?" She asked running up to me.
" Yeah I'm fine," I said looking back at Scraper.
"We'll continue our conversation later," he said. He rolled a shpere toward us and smoke came out. I ran into it, but he was gone. I turned toward Alisa who still had her cape up to her nose to keep from breathing in the smoke.
"He's gone," I said annoyed. He beat me again. The truth was I couldn't beat him by myself. No matter how hard I tried it didn't matter. It would never happen. He'd always have the upper hand.
