CHAPTER 1
March 4th 2014
Denton Alley, Detroit Michigan
1:34 A.M.
BAM! Shots rang out in the warehouse. BAM BAM BAM!
"Spark, what happened to the diversion?" I questioned.
I was crouched behind wooden crates.
"Don't blame me. It's not my fault I got stuck with the pin head," she said.
I lifted up my shirt and pulled out the hand gun I had in the back of my pants. I ran to the other side Of the warehouse as shots were fired at my direction, and wooden splinters flew around me.
"I put him with you, because you two work well together. What happened to that?" I asked. I slid across the floor on my knees behind another stack of wooden crates. Busting a drug cartel was so much easier by myself. "Team, listen up, when I count to three Spark's gonna blow out the lights, then I'm going to disintergrate the boxes and guns. When I do that Quake is going to rattle the ground. Frostbite you freeze the entrance ways so they don't get out. Splint, you're goi-"
"
Alright, let's kick some butt!" Splint cut me off.
"No, you didn't let me finish!" I screamed over the communicator. It was to late. The team went into action. Splint came out of nowhere. He ran up to a guy and punched him in the face then broke his arm. Spark went to shoot out the lights, but before she could, Quake hit the ground causing it to shake. It knocked Spark off balance which caused her to shoot lightning every where. It bounced off the walls and wooden crates. I jumped and yelped as a crate next to me exploded. I had to think fast. I created a force field around myself. It was a faint translucent blue color. I ran toward the chaos. Bullets and splinters hit the force field and bounced off. With my gun in hand, I dropped the field and jumped in the air creating a round disc for me to stand on. It lifted me up into the air and moved forward as I started firing.
I hit two of the guys and they dropped to the ground.
"Splint!" A voice yelled over the com. I looked over and saw him lying on the ground. Blood was running down his mask from a hole between his eyes. His mask was black with two way mirrors for the lenses.
"No!" I yelled. BOOM! I flew across the warehouse and into wooden crates. I hit the ground on my back and slid into a wall. I rolled over onto my stomach and tried to stand up, but fell back down. My vision was blurry. Smoke was every where. I tried to stand up again, but to no avail. The third time I was successful. I leaned against the wall and waited for my eyes to adjust. Blurry figures surrounded me. One walked up to me and hit me in the face with the butt of the gun, which knocked me over. I sprawled out on the floor. I tried to lift my self to my knees but they kicked me in the ribs. I turned over on my back and looked at the figures. I finally brought myself to my feet. The blurriness stopped. I could see clearly now. About 20 men with guns stood encircling me. One stepped out among them. He was wearing black shoes and pants with a black hood.
" Your plan has failed," he said to me. "Did you honestly think you could beat me with 6 teenagers? They charge into battle blind. No strategy, no tactic, and no plan. Hardly a team" He chuckled. "Pathetic! You have sealed your fate, and that of your friends." I lunged at him trying to punch him, but he dodged and punched me in the stomach. I fell on my knees. " You can't beat me with a team. Do you really expect to beat me by yourself?" I got up and leaned against the wall. "Take a look," he said. "Every one of them, dead. Dead because of you." I looked around. It was true. They all lie on floor. Blood splattered on the walls and floor. Guts and intestins strung along the ground and on shards of broken wooden. "No," I whispered. He laughed.
"Yes," he said. "I was hoping you'd die with them. Then I thought it'd be fun to play." He held out his hand. One of the men handed him a hand gun. He pointed it at my leg then pulled the trigger. BAM! I yelled and fell to the floor. I scooted back against the wall and held my knee. He knelt down to me. " All of them dead, and for what?" He whispered. "All of them. Bailey, Jace, Landon, Alisa, Jake. And for what?" He hissed.
"H-how did you know who they are?" I asked. He laughed.
"I know everything about you, Cody," he said. "Where you live, what you eat, what time you go to sleep, where you where born, and now," he moved toward my ear. "Where you die." He put the gun to my head. BAM!
I woke up screaming. I looked around my room frantically, sweating. It was all a dream. Just a dream.
CHAPTER 2
March 5th, 2014
Washington high school, North Carolina
12:42 p.m.
"That was the third nightmare this week," I said. We had just gotten our lunch and were sitting down at our usually table in the plaza. "It felt so real."
"Why are you getting them?" Landon asked. He's my best friend. He has brown eyes and hair. He's about 5"4 and skinny. If there's one person I can tell anything to, it's him.
" I don't know. I've been getting them ever since our fight with Paralegic," I said. In case you haven't figured out by now, I'm actually a hero, or "terrorist" as the government would call it. All those people who died in the dream, they're real, and heroes to. Landon goes by Quake. He can control the ground and create earth quakes. He's the shy one out of the group. He also is the tech head. Bailey goes by Frostbite. She can control and create ice. She's the popular one out of us. She's also my cousin. Jace goes by flare. He can control and make fire. He can also make magma. He also happens to be Bailey's brother and my cousin. Alisa goes by Spark. She can create and control lightning and electricity. She's the problem solver. I've also had a crush on her since 7th grade. Jake goes by Splint. He has super strength and can shoot lasers out of his eyes. He's the hot head out of the group. That leaves me, Cody. I go by Shadow. I'm the only one on the team without powers. Despite that I'm the team leader. I'm an expert in all forms of hand to hand combat and weaponry. We're a bunch of misfits and outcast. Well, except Bailey. We don't have a name for our team. With North Carolina's finest on our backs we shouldn't have one. Our next mission could be our last. We're all ready to die. It's dangerous, but we have to do it. No one else is willing to fight. With all these psychos with super powers running around causing trouble, someone has to. And that someone, is us.
"How could Paralegic cause them?" Landon asked.
"I don't know. How can he blow things up by looking at them?" I asked.
He thought a minute, then looked at me and shrugged.
"But it doesn't match his power set. We don't have anything on him being able to control dreams or having telepathy or anything related to messing with someone's head'" he said.
"Doesn't pay to advertise when you get locked in a cell," I replied.
About that time Bailey and Alisa walked up.
"Hey guys," Bailey said. She has brown hair, green eyes, and freckles. She's about 5"3. Alisa waved at us. Alisa has brown hair with blonde streaks in it and ocean blue eyes. She's about 5"6 , which was about my height. She was beautiful. The type of girl that could be a model if she wanted. "Hey," Landon replied. He looked back at me. " The real question is why you have powers in the dream. Do you feel inferior, because we have powers and you don't?" He asked. Bailey hit him in the arm. "Why don't you say it a little louder? I don't think Australia could hear you." She barked. He shook his head.
"I don't understand why we have to keep these powers a secret. I mean we should get a little credit for all we do instead of getting hunted down like dogs," he complained.
" I agree," Alisa said. "We should get some praise. We do half their job for them."
"Maybe that's why their pissed off all the time." I said. "Besides, even if they did reward us instead of trying to blow our heads off, revealing our identities to the world would put our families in danger. The psychopaths would use or kill them to get to us."
" I guess, but If I was a cop I'd be Thanking them. I mean we leave them there tied up and alive most of the time. All they have to do is clean up, then go back to eating donuts," Landon said. "Any way Cody, back to the question."
" Why would I feel infierior? Last week I took all of you super powered bozos down with out any weapons."
"I almost had you," Jake said sitting down by Alisa. He had brown hair and green eyes. He was the shortest out of all of us, about 5'2.he was lean and muscular. " One more blast and-"
"Oh save it," Bailey chimed in. "You're always close to beating him, but he always wins. It doesn't matter if you had one more blast you still wouldn't have beaten him!"
"Who's she yelling at now?" Jace asked. He was by far the tallest out of us all. He was around 6'5. He was skinny, but showed some muscle.
"Me," said Jake. "She doesn't think I couldn't beat Cody."
Jace laughed. "Because you can't."
"Can too," Jake sneered
"Dude, I'm a black belt in tae-kwon-do, and have fire powers, and I haven't been able to beat him, And last time I checked you have no Martial arts training except what Cody and I have taught you," Jace said.
"Well," Alisa said, " as much fun as it would be to listen to this argument, I've gotta go."
" You've still got 20 minutes before next period," I said.
"I know, but I've got a test in social studies and I want to study some more," she answered.
" You need any help?" Jake asked. He beat me by two seconds. We've both have had a crush on Alisa for awhile. We take turns trying to impress her, but most of the time we look like fools. I know it seems stupid fighting over a girl. It's something you'd see 6th graders do, Not Sophomores, but if you'd met this girl, you wouldn't find it stupid at all.
"Don't you have a D in social studies?" Alisa questioned.
" Yeah, but only because I don't try. I'm actually really good on American history," he gloated, taking a bite out of his burger.
"Oh, really?" Alisa asked.
"Yeah, really," Jake said.
"Well then, history buff," she said sarcastically, " when did the battle of Bunker Hill happen?"
He looked like a deer caught in the headlights.
"Uhhhh," he said.
" June 17th,1775," I commented.
"Yeah, that's what I was gonna say," He remarked.
"Mmhm," she said, skeptical. She turned and walked away.
"Honest!" He called after her. Landon nudged me.
"Why don't you just ask her out, it's obvious she likes you," he said. I guess he caught me staring at her again.
"Yeah, sure. She likes me about as much as Jake listens," I snickered.
I looked over at Jake, who had a confused look on his face." You don't listen," I said shaking my head
" So that means she doesn't like you?" He asked taking another bite of his burger. I nodded. "Oh," he said. I rolled my eyes
"See y'all later," I said.
"Where are you going?" Jace asked. He's the type of person that doesn't speak much. When he does it's usually funny or philosophical. Some times it's just stupid.
"I've got to help Mr. Parker with a science experiment," I said getting up from the table, and slinging my backpack over my shoulder. I gave a solute and walked back in the school. I walked down the hall and took a left to Mr. Parker's room. I opened the door and stopped in my tracks. Desks were knocked over and chairs had missing legs. Glass from broke breakers spread all over the floor. Claw marks and blood covered his desk and the floor. I walked in the room slowly, closing the door behind. As I walked glass crunched underneath my boot. "Mr. Parker?" I yelled. No answer. I walked over to his desk and looked at his chair. Stuffing was ripped out of it and all over the chair and floor. Leather was strung everywhere, and the chair was missing a wheel. I walked over to the where the desks were, and crouched. I moved the glass with my foot. I saw fur and picked it up, examining it. I heard growling. I looked up and the closet door was cracked, and a streak of blood was leading to it from his desk. I got up and slowly head toward the closest. I got behind the door and pulled it open quick. There I saw him. What was left of him. Mr. Parker's body. Lying in a Pool of blood. His stomach ripped open and intestins missing, or on the floor. Claw marks covered his face almost to the point where it was unrecognizable. And crouching above him a creature with fur and spikes coming out of his back. He had Mr. Parker's heart in his mouth, and his blood all over his hands. He snarled, dropped the heart, then Lunged at me.
Chapter 3
I fell on my back. The creature on top of me. It kept trying to bite me. I punched it in the nose and it turned it's head. I grabbed a piece of broken glass and stabbed it in it's eye as it turned it's head around. It let out a cry of pain. I punched it in the nose again and kicked it off of me. I rolled over on my stomach and brought myself to my feet. It pulled the glass out of it's eye and snarled. It jumped toward me and swatted at me. I rolled out of the way. I looked over at the Wall and saw the claw marks. It rushed at me again. I ran toward the closet as it charged at me. I rolled out of the way and slammed the closet door, then put a chair up against it. I ran, and jumped behind the counter. I opened it up as the creature banged on the door. I grab sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, and mixed them with water. The creature broke out of the closest and charged at me again. I threw acid in it's face. It howled in Pain and drew back. I looked around, and saw a piece of glass and picked it up.
"Why not," I said. I climbed on the desk, then jumped at it and stabbed it in the heart. It cried out and knocked me across the room. I flew into Mr. Parker's desk, knocking it over. I jumped up ready to fight, but the creature was dead. The door opened. I turned and looked as principal Snyder walked into the room. She looked around. She seemed shocked. I probably would be to if I didn't see it every day.
"What happened?" She asked.
I looked around. "It's kind of a long story," I said.
"Where's Mr. Parker?"
"He's... He's in the closet. Dead."
She looked at me with disbelief. After the ambulance and police came school was let out early.
I stayed late and talked to the police and Mrs. Snyder about the incident. After that I changed my shirt and the medics bandaged me. I was to focused on trying not to die that I didn't realize he scratched my ribs, chest, and face, and straight through my shirt. The medics told me I had broken a few bones in my chest along with two ribs and bruised quite a few of them. After I got out I walked down the alley behind the school, which led to a dead end. I looked behind me. No one was there. I traced my hand down the wall until one brick pushed in a little. I pushed it in further and the brick to the left of it slid down to reveal an eye scanner. I bent over and put my eye up to it. It scanned my eye, then blinked green. The brick wall opened to reveal a hall. I walked into it, which was lit by dim blue lights. i walked a long until I got to a tube at the end of the hallway. I placed my hand on the DNA pad. A blue light scanned it, then it turned green. The pod opened. I stepped in and punched the code into the base. A white beam of light shined. Then I appeared at the base.

5:43 p.m.
Alisa ran up to me and gave me a hug. Which hurt my ribs.
"Oh my god, are you okay?" She asked.
"Yeah, peachy." I said sarcastically.
"Good," she said. Then she hit me. Every body laughed except me.
" Don't ever scare me like that again," she said.
" You do this every time I get in a fight without the team," I said.
"Yet, it still hasn't gotten into your head."
"Well," Landon said, " you might have survived the rabid animal attack, but not your girlfriend. I've got the Lazarus set up for you."
"Thanks," I replied. The Lazarus is a device we use to heal ourselves. We call it the Lazarus because it can bring anything dead for less than 30 seconds back to life. I didn't do much damage so it should heal me in a few seconds. I walked over to a chair. I sat down, and pulled a tube out of my pocket, then threw it to Landon.
"After all that you still managed to get a blood and hair sample?" He asked. I nodded "I also got a blood and tissue sample of Mr. Parker in my backpack," I said hooking the wires up to me, " I don't know how much help that'll be, but it's there if you need it." He laughed. " You could put Criss Angle out of work," he said amused.
" Look at the school security footage from every camera. There were no signs of forced entry and the windows were still in tacked too. Either someone let it in or it got in on it's own," I said.
" How did it make it in the school without being spotted?" Alisa asked.
" Yeah," Bailey chimed in, "it's a seven foot monster covered in fur with spikes coming out of it's back. It's kinda noticable."
" Alright, listen up," I demanded, "Landon you run tests on the DNA and fur, see what you can find out. Give me a report ASAP. Alisa, you and Jace take the south and east side of town. Jake and Bailey, you take the north and west. Check out in 2300 hours."
"Uh, boss," Landon said from behind. " I think you should look at this." I turned around and looked at the screen as he rewound the footage. He stopped it then pressed play. I watched as Mr. Parker walked through the hallway, and looked at the camera.
"Stop," I said leaning toward the screen. "Rewind it." He pressed the button, and the footage went backwards. "Stop." The footage played as Mr. Parker looked at the camera. "Pause it. Zoom in on his eyes." There it was. The red flare from his eyes. We all knew what that meant.
"Well Alisa, guess that answers your question," I said.
"Shape shifter," Jake interrupted, "God forbid we have an easy job for once."
"But we've never faced a shape shifter that looks like that in it's natural form," Jace said.
He was right It didn't make any since.
"How do we know that was it's natural form?" Bailey asked.
"There's not been a report of any shape shifter not returning to their natural form after dying, and we haven't ever had one do that. Besides, I threw acid in it's face. That would have burned through that layer and revealed his actual one," I replied. We stood in silence for a while. " Okay," I said breaking the silence, " let's get moving. These streets aren't gonna protect themselves." I saw Landon make some gesture out of the corner of my eye. I looked at him, and he turned his head to me quick. We locked eyes. Then Jace's phone went off I turned to look at him hesitant to take my eyes off of Landon.
"I can't go," he said. I frowned. Something wasn't right.
"What do you mean you can't go? You don't do anything," I said supicious.
"Mom wants me to babysit Jamey, so I can't patrol with Alisa. You mind covering for me?"
I looked at Landon. It was obvious now. They wanted me to talk to Alisa and tell her I liked her. For once in my life I didn't have a plan. Nothing elaborate to get me out this.
"No," she said, "I can patrol by myself."
" You ain't going out there by yourself," I said.
"I'll go with her," Jake volunteered.
"No," I said quickly, "I need you to patrol the north and east with Bailey. Those are the bad parts of town."
"I can take care of myself," Alisa said with her arms crossed.
"I know, but I'd rather someone go with you," I said. Jake started to say something, but Bailey smacked him in the back of the head. I unplugged the Lazarus, and stood up. It didn't hurt anymore, and my ribs and chest bones were healed.
"Great," Jace said, " hope y'all have a lovely evenin' I'm outta here." He gave a small wave then went over to the teleporter typed in his code, stepped into the pod, then vanished in a flash of white light.
"Suit up," I said. I twist the outside of my watch and my suit came out. It was a black suit with red outlines. The cape was made of Kevlar along with the rest of the suit. The mask was a full cover mask. It had a built in filter and two way mirrors for the lenses. It was black and had a red outline along the eyes.
"Are you ready?" Alisa asked. Her costume was a metallic dark purple with a lighter purple on the out lines. Her cape was a dark metallic purple as well. Her mask just covered her eyes and the outline of her nose instead of covering her whole head. Her mask was dark purple with lenses the reflected white. Her brown hair with golden streaks could still be seen.
"Yeah," I nodded. She turned, and walked to the teleporter. I looked at Landon who gave me a thumbs up * go get her* he mouthed. I stepped into the teleporter with her and typed in our location.
Hope y'all liked the first three chapters of my book " unknown" I will be adding more action filled chapters in the future. I just had so many ideas that I wanted to get done before I forgot. I spell checked it the best I could, but there still may be a few errors so please ignore that. Thanks. Have a blessed day!
