*Prologue
In the year 8080 in a country called Yumanthi, there were four states: Quitalye, Cutseji, Aeglitraina, and Senpiproso. Each state is separated by a 25-foot stone wall that is guarded and patrolled at all times. Each state lives as though they are in the 1780s: they live without technology or money of any sort, they live by candlelight, they cook over a fireplace, they sew their own clothing, they wash that clothing in a river, they provide each other with resources through trading. They speak and dress like they are in the 1780s as well, and yet they believe in the Greek gods and goddesses. Each state is separated into four villages: Northern, Eastern, Southern, and Western.
In Quitalye, Cutseji, and Aeglitraina, every human being has equal rights to everything, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, age, ability, etc. But Senpiproso is stuck in the 1600s in terms of rights. If you were anything but a straight, white, male, you had little to no rights. You could not vote, own property, or hold a job. The only exception to that were widowers. If you were a woman and you lost your husband, what was his became yours, with regret from the state's mayor. The mayor Matthew Thatcher, who is more there to make official appearances than do make any major decisions.
He led the state with his younger brother Adrian, who made the executive decisions. Despite being younger than Matthew, their father had left Adrian with more power because frankly, Adrian was as bigoted as his father while Matthew wished for equal rights. So the power of being mayor had gone to Adrian while the face of power had gone to Matthew. Adrian ruled with an iron fist and the threat of being burned at the stake if you dared question him, and that was that.
This story follows 17-year-old Gracelynn Weatherbury of Senpiproso, a citizen of Eastern Senpiproso. A bout of fear of witchcraft has struck the village as Gracelynn grows frustrated with life in the village. She must cope with the loss of her father and three older sisters while trying to change her state's views, for good.
